what's the point. Curry is the point.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX That's what I call an X-press. But it didn't get me a curry, so what was the point. Not a bad little cheap budget tasty nice wet Curry House (nice and wet, hmm) in the Triangle area, and one which just about deserves five stars for the tasty curry which could have used a little extra spice - and also for the excellent service. I'm a big fan of Indian food, especially British Indian style, but I do not like the U.S. bland Americanized variety. This is more along the lines of the kind of stuff that I like and it's definitely the best of its kind that I've had in North Carolina.

I am new to the area coming from Houston, TX, where there are plenty good authentic Pakistani/Indian restaurants and I wanted to see what they had over in RTP. I went here to today for lunch and I was honestly very disappointed. They were out of chicken in the chicken biryani. Not a huge problem so I went for the lamb one instead with the chicken tikka masala. My friends didn't get any naan because they ran out after me. I went to get a fountain drink but both the tea containers were dispensing water. Okay, not another huge issue, I'll get a lemonade instead. Nope, water again. I tried the Pepsi next and there was no carbonation in it so I settled for the water unfortunately. But my food was absolutely awful. The rice was crunchy. The naan was as flat as a roti and burnt and was tasteless. The chicken tikka masala tasted so citrusy it felt like I was eating a horribly cooked orange chicken dish from Panda Express. You can look at the picture below, the goat was completely black with a terrible texture and had no flavor to it all. I couldn't eat this food and just threw it away and wasted my money. DO NOT EAT HERE. I am Pakistani and I can tell you that this food is not authentic at all! Just look at the other recent reviews if you don't believe me. I will be continuing to search for better authentic desi cuisine in the RTP area.

Great tasting food. Friendly staff. Clean environment. Good prices. I have not had a bad experience here yet and I've been eating here for 4 years. Butter Chicken Chicken Tikka Masala Veggie meals.

Came here on recommendations from friends. I wasn't disappointed. They have a really good selection of different dishes. Nitesh was very helpful in giving me samples to try. I wanted spicy and hot, so he let me try the Chicken Vandaloo. It had a full-bodied curry flavor, but I didn't think it was that hot. For about a minute !! It made my nose run. Really kicked in. Forwarned ! I tried the Chicken Marsala. Yumzers! You get a good serving of chicken, and then a heaping of rice which is amazing. For $6 bucks and change, you can't beat this. Enjoy !!

    Three entree takeout

I love the point-and-serve concept for Indian food! It's fast, hot, and fresh, which I love in a lunch place. This place is pretty scarce on atmosphere, but come noontime on a weekday it's packed to the gills. Nevertheless, they get you through here fast. You can do a 1, 2, or 3 entree lunch plate, or a trio built around a biryani and naan dish with 1 entree. Something to note here, I suppose it's Western vs Eastern - *veggies are not sides*. For example, Okra curry and Cauliflower korma are entrees, not sides, and rightly so. The okra curry was my standout favorite, far and above any of the chicken dishes I've gotten lately. Sides only include rice, naan, or steamed blah vegetables (it seems they very likely microwaved a bag of green giant steamables here). So to get a true sample, you'll want to do the three entree to get a Western plate of meat, one yellow veggie, and one green veggie. That said, the three entree lunch is still a steal at $8.99 and will keep me coming back for more!

The $9.99 dinner special is a lot of food for one person

How an Indian family ended up in Durham is far beyond my grasp. I'm glad they did, though, because the food is great, the prices greater, and the portions reasonable. The people complaining must have been to a different place because I'm loving everything about it.

2 entrees 2 sides dinner. I got chicken tikka masala, vegetable korma, rice, and naan. I have no clue what my silly husband got.

I have eaten here 2-3 times and I truly love their food. Up until this past weekend I had only eaten here for lunch, but I got to take my husband here for dinner after using Yelp for a 'nearby' search and realizing they were open for dinner (!!!) (This is hard to find in RTP,...everyone closes up shop at 3pm like everyone who lives here wants to eat at Cheesecake Factory.. girrrrlbye.) Anyhow, they are very reasonably priced and they have most menu items out on display (like this used to be a Subway?) in bins so you can SEE what you're ordering, which for me, is nice. It's like a buffet but not a buffet. The reason I'm deducting a star is for ambiance. The ambiance straight up sucks. They have pendant lights but rather than use them at night they just keep those nasty fluorescent overhead lights on (eww, again, I think it used to be a Subway or something). Plus they need some music or something playing. Anything. I'd settle for a local radio station but Bollywood soundtracks would be cool too?

I thought the express lunch/dinner would be a good option because prices seemed very reasonable. Your options are one entree and one side for $7, two entrees and two sides for $8.50, and three entrees and two sides for $10. I went with the first option and got rice with veggies and saag paneer. (Other "sides" include plain rice and naan.) Portions were small to medium size, but closer to small. Even for $7, I didn't feel like I was actually getting a good deal because my saag paneer was only filled three-quarters of the way (barely) and in a small styrofoam bowl. (The amount shown in the photo is how much they gave me.) So I wouldn't recommend the one entree one side option if you're really hungry. The two entree two side option is probably the better deal, but again, don't expect large portions at all. The samosas were large though and only $1.50 each. Definitely not the best I've had, but a much better deal than my entree. Taste | 3.5 Atmosphere | 3 Presentation | 2 Service | 2.5 OVERALL | 3

Long lines at lunch but moves fast
    Kate W.

We've eaten here a few times and it's a hit or miss for me. The chicken vindaloo, butter chicken and Tikka Masala are great. The palak paneer is pureed to the point of baby food which disturbs me. If I could do 3.5 stars, I'd give it that. The lunch options overwhelm me. How many items? Do I make it a meal since I'm getting a drink? Does the Thali only add pickles, raita and dal? Is biryani a meal option or side? The lines are long so I always feel like I need to decide quickly. I wanted Dosa today and had gotten it before at lunch but today they were to busy to accommodate it. Understandable, I suppose. We had a nice pakoda with our meal and Naan which we enjoyed. I miss the onion relish of the buffets as well as salads. It's a different and very popular Indian dining option and seems to stay busy. We will be back but not during peak times. Lunch with sodas for two was $22.50. There are long lines at peak times but it seems to go fast.

Bones from my goat curry. Not sure if that's normal.
    Andy S.

I've been here a few times now, as they are close to my office, and the food seems to be reasonably solid. Everything I've had has been flavorful and well-spiced, and the value for what you get is pretty good. Portions are reasonable at about 8 fl oz for each "entree" portion, and each of their "express" meals includes up to 3 entrees and 2 sides (naan, rice, veggies). The dining area is simple and perfunctory, with little in the way of ambiance or decor. Fine for stopping in with some friends or coworkers, but not a place to take a date or client. On my first visit, I discovered that they don't generally have everything on the menu available for purchase. Seems that they have rotating availability on the entrees, so don't expect to be able to get chicken korma just because it's on the menu; you won't know what your options are until you're standing in front of the counter. I'm generally satisfied with the food, but I did encounter something odd with the goat curry today: bones. Maybe I'm just ignorant, and maybe its traditional to cook and serve goat curry with bits of bones in it, but I found it a little off-putting as I chomped down onto things that were very much unchewable, and I can't help but feel a bit cheated as these bones were taking up valuable space in the cup that to-go entrees are provided in. I'd give them a solid 3.5 stars, but I'll round up to four given that maybe my dissatisfaction with the goat curry is the result of my own ignorance. Who knows. I'll still go back, but maybe I'll be skipping their goat dishes.

Chole, saag paneer, chicken tikka masala
    Brian H.

Hidden gem that I didn't realize existed literally 2 blocks from me! Had a craving for Indian food and naturally jumped onto Yelp and discovered this place. This place is essentially a place of fast (and good!) Indian food. All of the dishes are pre cooked and laid out for you to see behind the counter. For 3 entrees and 2 sides it cost $9.99!! And each entree is a pint of food! Saag paneer is one of my favorite dishes of all time regardless of where I get it from, and it was very good here. It could be a tad bit creamier. Chole had a nice kick spice to it and was sweet as well. All the dishes I had were very well made and by no means have that watery texture to it. The sauces were rich but not too buttery or heavy as tasty Indian food can have a tendency to get. I don't know if the great price is biasing me to believe the food is better than it is, but regardless this has just become my go to place if I want solid Indian food, and I want solid Indian food fast!!

This is the "trio", with saag paneer, vegetarian biryani, and two hard pieces of naan.

I had a lunch special, the Non-Vegetarian Thali, which came with a Vegetable Samosa, Dal Bukhara, Butter Chicken, Butter Naan, Rice, Raita, and a Gulab Jamun. This is the first time I've had a Thali and the presentation was beautiful. Vegetable Samosa: Perfectly crisp on the outside and soft inside. Mild spicy. Dal Bukhara: Delicious lentil curry! I've never had this before (I usually get Dal Makhani), and I now know I prefer Dal Bukhara because it has lentils only. Butter Chicken: Delicious curry. I loved the smoky flavor and char on the chicken. The curry was perfectly spicy (I ordered medium spicy). The butter naan, rice, and raita were all good in supporting the dish. Gulab Jamun: A delicious sweet doughnut in syrup, a nice little treat before leaving the restaurant. The lunch Non-Veg Thali is a great deal at $24, especially for the amount of food you get (I ended up with leftovers too). I can't wait to come back and try their dinner and bar offerings!

We were seated immediately and ordered drinks which were out promptly. Jaljeera, wine and the cocktail urban turban special. I loved my jaljeera, perfect sweet and tangy spicy flavour. For starters we ordered chicken chapli kabab, tandoori fish tikka and dahi ke kabab. Dahi kebab was the winner, it was crispy and soft and went perfectly well with its sweet gravy which was good twist to this simple appetizer. My second favorite was the chapli kabab, it was so soft and juicy and very light on spice. Their fish dishes were a little disappointing, I guess the fish and preparation both were not impressive. For main course we ordered their malabar fish curry which again was a disappointment, punjabi chicken curry which was pretty good, but the daal bukhara stole our hearts, very well prepared and flavourful dish. We couldn't stop ourselves from ordering some desserts, so we ordered their balu shahi with Rabri and gulab jamun with icecream. Rabri was great, but balushahi was big, seemed undercooked and bland. It's very difficult to mess up gulab jamun so that was good. The service was fast and the people were so friendly. We paid tip over the bill that already had gratuity included since we dint know, and the person came back with money and returned it saying the gratuity is included. We loved the honesty and warm gesture of the people working there. I am really looking forward to visiting this place again soon and trying their other dishes.

Ok, let me get this clear. Many people love this place and I now know why but I also don't want to…read moreunderstate my pure glee when trying this food. I'm a fairly practiced home cook that loves to make food-sciency dishes, Michelin inspired stuff, and true comfort food alike. Most places I've been I could now recreate the majority of the food on my own (including a variety of ethnic food, especially Indian). I think it would take me a few years to recreate ONE DISH from this place. I should seriously be spending time with my mother and grandmother but instead my head is currently buried in my phone while trying to envision the tastes that hit my tongue. Anyways, this place beat the brakes off my expectations, so let's get talking about food and service. First Impression: Upon walking into the restaurant, I was kindly greeted by the man working the front of house (Sonny) and he shook my hand after recognizing my voice. I called fifteen minutes prior to push our reservation and add a seat, but I did not expect to feel so welcomed and comfortable so quickly. Amazing hire and clearly keeps things running smoothly. No notes for the other staff either, they were all exceedingly kind, courteous, and responsive when we had questions. Ambiance: This greatly contributed to the fantastic meal we just had. They had flowers and balloons out for Mother's Day (which was not expected at all either), but also the whole place is filled with natural light and a simply great vibe when eating food. Music wasn't loud/distracting, acoustics never made me worry I was yelling either. The food also was so pretty that it just tied it all together organically. Appetizers: I think this place is pretty well known for its Gunpowder Lamb Chops. So I won't go into excessive detail, but yes it is just that fucking good that if you don't get it, you're probably not thinking straight. I will definitely be back for those because I wouldn't dare try to make it myself and ruin it. We also had this Chaat dish that was a more modern take and it was without a doubt the most creative Chaat I've ever tried. Excellent. Entrees and Sides: We ordered three entrees to share amongst 5 adults (although 2 are older folks) and had two small boxes of leftovers to argue over. The first thing that I tried was the Duck Vindaloo (9.8/10) - I knew immediately I would be writing my very first food review afterwards. I don't even know if putting duck in a vindaloo is conventional, but it's EPIC. My grandparents thought it was a touch sweet but I liked it better that way and it perfectly complemented the duck. Next was the Ember Lamb Shank Special (9.5/10) - which was of course amazing. I actually forgot to put the gravy on top for the first half of the lamb I ate, so the half point off is honestly my fault. Would've been a ten if I was locked in. We also got the Nustea Shrimp (10/10) - which I think you will have to try yourself to believe my rating. I won't even try to describe it other than the sorba (sauce) that we almost licked off the plate. Lastly, we had Naan (8.9/10), Chili-Garlic Naan (9.3/10), Raita (9.7/10), and a vegetable salad (9/10) on the side. I have always thought most Indian restaurants cheap out on the sides, but this one makes them expert level. I genuinely have no idea what the orange crunchy spheres in the raita were, but this was the only time I've ever had raita outside my home and liked it. Desserts and Beverages: We ordered the Kumbala Brulee (9.5/10, genius idea btw). The lovely staff ALSO gifted us some Raspberry cake (9.7/10) which was phenomenal. That was honestly the cherry on top that made me a true believer. Final Note: If you read this far and haven't made a reservation yet then unfortunately you didn't get the point... Go try this place ASAP I pinky promise you won't regret it. I even ordered a goat curry to go so my girlfriend could try the art they are calling food. Oh and did I somehow forget to add ALL THE MEAT IS HALAL??? What a way to put me in the running for favorite grandchild . And Sonny if you're reading this thanks for making this Mother's Day one of the best you're the man!!

We shared the chicken tikka masala which was presented nicely as well. It came with a large portion of rice to share. We also ordered Chili garlic naan & butter roti. The roti was okay. The naan was the star! Garlicky and buttery. Did I taste any chili, no but the naan was still delicious! Best I've had. We ended the meal with dessert, their Burnt Butter Pannacotta is a MUST order! Not too sweet and the pannacotta set perfectly. It seemed to have Smacks (yes the old school cereal) on top with a delicious sponge cake and fruit! It all worked well together!
