    Lamb curry
    Sho R.

I took out lunch from here on a week day. The place was empty. They had a parking lot. I took out lamb curry. I added +2 spiciness. Lamb curry was already spicy. I am not sure if I added additional spice to the spicy lamb curry or if it was on top of a milder base version for online ordering. It ended up spicier than I would like.

Great variety of curries and noodle dishes - wonderful lunch option. Good value. Tons of vegetarian and vegan options. Easy parking and small amount of interior seating.

Jungle Curry w/ tofu and rice noodles

Takeout and delivery only during covid, as of May 2021 anyway. I got the Jungle Curry with Rice Noodles and Tofu ($10.63). The curry had really good flavor and the tofu pieces were huge. There weren't too many vegetables and the curry was VERY water-y. The rice noodles weren't a very good idea because they don't soak up anything, so if you get the curry I recommend sticking with brown or white rice! The portion size of the curry is pretty sizeable but they didn't give nearly enough noodles to eat with it since they didn't soak up any of the gravy. I ordered online and it took about 20-30 minutes. It's good in a pinch, especially since they deliver but with the many other authentic curry options around the Madison area, I most likely will not be returning.

    Envy Green Curry. So good!

We tried Curry In the Box for a late lunch on Sunday. We've driven by this place dozens of times and commented that we should try it. I like the name, I think it's distinctive, but I had pretty low expectations. My partner had heard it was fast-food Thai and we weren't expecting much. It's also on University, so getting there can be a pain depending on traffic. The woman at the counter was ready to take our order but we needed to peruse the menu on the wall first. I ordered the Envy Green Curry which claimed it was very Spicy. My partner got the Japanese Pan Curry - little spicy. When I paid via credit card it asked how much I wanted to tip: 15%, 20%, 25% or custom. I'm not sure on the etiquette of tipping when you order at the counter. Other than ordering my food, there'd been zero interaction. After paying, I was given a number and told they would bring it out when it was ready. The space is open with lots of room between seats. We sat at a table near the counter and I attempted and failed to pick up the wifi from the Starbucks next door. We waited for our meals to arrive. I was very pleased with the flavors and texture of my curry. Creamy, smooth, currytastic. It was delicious. I would have described it as a little to medium spicy rather than very spicy, but I still thought it was some of the best curry I have had in a long time. It was loaded with bamboo shoots and carrots as well as peapods, bok choy and basil and was served with a small bowl of perfectly cooked nutty brown rice. My partner's curry was just as creamy and delicious though even milder. It came with a breaded and fried chicken breast as well as a full bowl of potatoes. I don't love the location and I'm still unsure of the tipping, but I seriously loved the curry. I would definitely like to go back and try the other varieties.

    My slivers of Chicken Karee
    Delonda J.

The only reason I didn't give them 1 star is because of how quickly the food was ready and the flavor. I ordered the chicken karee with medium spice. Good thing about it is the flavor and portion-the bad thing is that it was mostly potatoes and onions with slivers of chicken. I'm not lying-there was less than half of a chicken breast in my meal and they were sliced VERY thin. I'm not very pleased that I just paid $10 for it BUT it tastes really good so I'm just a little sad. Curry in the Box-please step your chicken game up so that I can be happy and love you! Worth it if you're craving good curry, not worth it if you want some chicken in your curry!

The people working at the cart were really nice and accommodating, and were happy to modify any dish they could for ingredients that you can't or don't eat. The first thing I tried was the squash curry, which was a really generous portion size for $7, consisting of rice topped with a rich coconut milk-based curry filled with chicken, kabocha, and zucchini. It was really filling and tasty. But the real winner from the cart after a few visits was the avocado spring roll, which was $3.50 and the size of a burrito. It was basically a giant fresh roll filled with avocado, lettuce, cabbage, mint, rice noodles, cucumber, carrot, and peanut sauce. We got the medium spicy sauce, and it had a fantastic kick to it. Still can't believe something so large was only a few dollars, as it was such a great deal. Definitely worth trying this cart if you're looking for something to eat on campus.

I ordered the following: 1) basil fried rice ($15) 2) hot and sour soup ($5) 3) broken rice with bbq pork ($19) ** Bonus, free egg rolls The price is ok, but the portion is small. 1) basil fried rice barely had any basil flavor, the broccoli took away any flavor left. The rice is soggy and the bamboo shoot seem like it comes out of a can. 2) hot and sour soup lack has some flavor. Still missing the sour part. Im addition, it is very thick, I think it has too much starch added to it. 3) the broken rice is not made with broken rice. It's made with the same rice as everything else. The bbq pork is drive, again lack seasoning. The fish sauce is so sweet. It's missing the salty part and flavorfulness. I think 3 stars is fair.

Just a simple, down-to-earth place to get some Thai food, and some pretty good food at that. For lack of a picture of what I personally ate, I'll post the pic I got of my friend's Guey Tuey Kee Mao, or what may be more described as "drunken noodles." It was pretty good and authentic - just the right balance of saltiness and sweetness in the sauce, and the chicken in it was done nicely. I personally ordered the Pad-Z-You (probably more towards pad see ew) with beef, and that was also quite good. Extremely straightforward dish that was executed well. Overall, this was a nice place for a casual dinner. The server was also quite friendly too. The food is definitely not "mind-blowing," but it certainly scratches the itch for good Thai food.

My friend said that the curry was amazing and they definitely want to come again for that. My other friend didn't like the pad Thai that much and had to put a lot of sauce on it. They thought the soup and the spring rolls were decent and didn't have any complaints. Pork Larb is my favorite food and I really didn't enjoy the pork Larb here. It had carrots in it which I had never seen before and it was incredibly dry and sweet. They also didn't have sticky rice I could order unless it was the sticky rice for dessert with coconut milk in it which I didn't want. It also costed me extra for cucumber and lettuce which should automatically come with it (who eats Larb by itself???). As far as ambiance goes, it was kind of dark in there but the decor and atmosphere was okay. The service was very nice but they did forget some of our food at one point. I really like the server who brought our food though; she was charming and enjoyable to talk to. Overall, I see great potential with this place and really only wish the best. With some tweaking and recipe perfection, this could be a good, treasured spot in the area.

The workers and owners here at Hot 'n Spicy are very friendly and the larb siin, thum mak hoong, siin savanh, sai oua (medium), combo crispy lard nar, and sesame balls are the bomb! The larb's bitter and sour, with the beef tasting tender and juicy, just like how I like it and how I make it. The thum has the same fishy, pungent taste that I love, with super fresh papaya and tomatoes. These were the two dishes I ordered when I first checked out this restaurant in April 2022, and both taste just like how I remembered them. The siin savanh's flavorful (with hints of fish sauce and soy sauce), crisp, and tender. The sai oua's super juicy and tender, with spices, and is of the sweet variety (not the sour variety). The jeow som that comes with it is super garlicky and fishy, with a slight hint of spice, just as I'd want it like and how I'd make it myself. The lard nar has crispy noodles that were just right in terms of crisp and flavor (you can feel the crispy while still tasting the flavor of the wide rice noodles) and the protein's also the right level of tenderness (not tough at all)! I think the sauce uses more soy sauce than I'd like, as it's a bit heavier than what I make and see at most other restaurants, but that's no big deal. The sesame balls are warm, the perfect level of chewy, and generously filled. The bean filling's so tasty. They also aren't oily in the slightest! The (regular) sticky rice, purple, is fresh and is a generous option for the price. I wish the food were spicier, as I used to order this same spice level (their spiciest level) years back and found myself sweating and having a runny nose. I hope I might be able to order spicier than their spiciest level next time! I ordered a lot and they were in the middle of a lunch rush during my visit, but all my dishes came at a reasonable time. Also, my waitress, Alyssa (not sure if I spelled her name correctly since I didn't ask her how she spells it), made sure to check on me and other tables every few minutes to see how we were doing! After my meal, I love how Alyssa gave me some stickers, just as I love how I got to speak a little bit with the kitchen staff (as they were less busy by the time I was leaving)! I found it funny how some of them thought I was Kevin, a family friend of theirs. It was this amazing combination of food and service, which reminded me of my family and simpler times, that was the reason this restaurant was my go-to restaurant when I was a law school student at UW-Madison years back (even though this restaurant was out of my way and there were so many other Lao/Southeast Asian restaurants closer to where I was living). My visits here back then helped more than I could ever describe with combating all the stress I had (because law school was so difficult) and the loneliness I had (because I had no luck making friends at the time). Sadly, they didn't have Thai iced tea during my visit, so that'll be a reason for me to come back! I'll have to get their pho next time, as that's also a dish I ordered years ago and loved! Btw, this restaurant will soon be moving from inside of Viet Hoa Market to Mishqui Peruvian Bistro (same plaza), which will allow them to have more tables/seating and more hours, so I'll definitely be back after they've moved!
