Spice Fine Indian Cuisine is a diamond (surely some of the best Indian food I have eaten in Austin) ... or a chunk of coal. Let me put it another way... I waited to see if I got sick before I wrote this review. For perspective, I grew up in Mexico. I'm not easily frightened away, but I can spot red flags. First thought upon arrival: "So glad I checked their health score on Yelp." See Spice Fine Indian Cuisine (95 out of 100). Upon closer inspection, Spice Fine Indian Cuisine (aka AG's Spice, aka Pushpa) has an abysmal record. In fact, this restaurant is simultaneously operating under three different names and has three different Yelp pages. Please see my photos to review their Food Establishment Inspection Scores from Austin's Open Data Portal. A score of 58 just last year would be considered poor and would indicate that the restaurant has had multiple critical violations, such as issues with food handling, storage, or cleanliness. In Texas, the lowest health rating a restaurant can receive is an F, or a score of 70 or below. This is a travesty, because the food really, truly was delicious, and their offerings are fascinating. If this place were truly cleaned up, it could easily become the toast of the town... it was that good. They specialize in Hyderabad cuisine- something I know nothing about - but they also serve many of American's favorite dishes, such as curry, or Tikka Masala. Red flags: - The man who came to our table to "check" on us was so unkempt that it was remarkable. His hair had not seen shampoo for a very long time. I speculate that he was one or all of the following: owner, manager, chef. - Tables and menus had been wiped clean with a very greasy cloth or sponge. The glass top was streaked everywhere. - Bits of dried old food on supposedly clean dishes (we were handed a stack of dinner plates, and two of them had them). I imagine that they use an industrial dishwasher, so I wasn't alarmed. Still... - We were the only people in the place for two hours (5-7pm) on a Saturday, which happened to be the restaurant's Happy Hour, according to their website. - A very dead potted plant right next to reception. - Three restaurant name changes? - We were seated in a booth which was not flush against the wall. In the crack, I spotted a fork, a newspaper and a wadded tissue.

But in my recent trip to Austin, I found these amazing Momos The stuffing was exactly as we like back in Delhi- the perfect balance of flavors and the satisfying texture. That sucks and it ruined our meals but when the food IS good it's that good so it's literally the only place I've ever forgiven and returned to. The hours have changed so often that every ordering platform including yelp can't keep up which makes it nearly impossible to plan for and by the time we can safely find them open once again everything is out or just not even able to order everything we want via one platform. The dude is super nice and we appreciate that but we can't support a business that can't even be stable with consistency for us to even access them- and this is a splurge for us so we do end up having to be economical and order the frozen bulk which has been super great- IF we can get them. And the most recent awful change also relating to hours is how little they are now open! Currently showing Thursday to Sunday and now only 5-10pm and even as I write this the only platforms that have the full offerings of the food we want (the v momos fried and jhol) won't even allow us to order saying they are actually closed. They have a standard strip mall storefront; but the design inside is actually quite nice. The booths, while comfortable, can easily be moved when getting in or out of them. Each time I've gone to this restaurant, there has always been someone to greet patrons and help with pickups. I've both gotten takeout and dined in with them once each so far. Interestingly, I found my experience between the two slightly inconsistent. When ordering through their Toast Tab page online, most dishes offer four spice levels: mild, medium, spicy, and extra spicy. The default level appears to be medium which I would recommend based, compared with spicy, given my testing so far; the difference as far as I can tell is that yes, spicy will be spicy, but the base flavor will change from something that is fragrant to something that tastes mostly of straight chili peppers (and not the fruity type of chilies); the chilies cover up the base flavors. However, when ordering inside the restaurant, they did not mention spice levels, so I'm not sure of what spice levels were utilized. For takeout, I've ordered the following and also noticed that estimated pickup time on their to-go orders are not very accurate; I arrived 20 minutes after the promised ready time, and I still had to wait about 10 minutes before the order was ready. They have a pretty comfortable sofa to sit on while waiting and writing Yelp review drafts. Kohzi Sukka (medium) -- the chicken was tender; the seasoning on it was decently flavorful; there were bits of coconut shavings I found, but overall it was not as flavorful as it could have been. Corn Methi Malai (medium) -- the corn flavor came through quite nicely, and I was able to taste most of the spices. Malai Kofta (spicy) -- the kofta was soft and fragrant; but the base flavor was covered by chili flavor, no doubt because I selected the spicy option. I'm really not a fan of the chili that they use, especially since it is not a fragrant type of chili. It is possible to obtain spicy food that does not cover up the base flavors; this particular preparation is not it. Chaas -- I enjoyed this drink. It is watery, yogurty, with spices, and it has a strong cumin flavor. For dine-in: Pav Bahji -- I suppose this came as "spicy" by default. The curry was mostly chili flavored, leading to the impression that this was a bland, tasteless curry (when eaten alone). In other words, the flavor had been cooked out of it, and only the chili flavor remained. However, when coupled with the toasted buns the combo yielded more enjoyable bites. Adding the onions and lime juice to the curry did not appreciable assist the bland base. I think the version I received was poorly executed. Cheese Dosa -- it should be noted that all their dosas come with potato masala (whether inside, on the side, or simply excluded). The provided chutneys were fine, though a bit on the lighter side. Chicken 65 -- I tasted mostly chili flavor; the underlying flavors which make chicken 65 iconic were quite muted. Also, the signature crispness was absent. There was a lack of tang in the flavor profile. This rendition was poorly executed. Overall, some common themes I noticed were that their spicy dishes are unbalanced and bland, since the non-fragrant chili flavor dominates. Their "medium" dishes have a decent amount of flavor, but the flavors are not as pronounced as they could be. I suspect if they utilize a different type of chilies, or if they increase the quantity of spices incorporated in their "spicy" dishes, they'll be able to correct for the current defects.

Lets get to it! Chicken Tikka Masala Generally, tikka masala is made with yogurt marinated chicken. The chicken is then skewered and chargrilled, giving the meat an incredible charred flavor. A tomato and coriander sauce is common, but no recipe for chicken tikka masala is standard. Chicken tikka masala is similar to butter chicken, both in the method of creation and appearance.What is served here is a tikka masala sauce that is reminiscent of a classic curry-stand recipe. This is not haute cuisine; it's the kind of nuclear-orange tikka masala you crave when you stumble out of da club at 3 A.M.This dish has a punch that comes from a mildly spicy heat, but it's not extremely hot due to the creamy tomato sauce that balances out the spice. Butter Chicken Butter chicken is a type of curry made from chicken with a spiced tomato and butter (makhan) sauce. Similar to chicken tikka masala, the chicken is marinated for several hours in a mixture of lemon juice, dahi, Kashmiri red chilli, salt, garam masala, ginger paste, and garlic paste. Paneer Chili Momo I only had momos once before having them here. If you are like me the first time I tried these and want to know what the heck momos are: Momos are a traditional delicacy snack (Asian steamed filled dumpling) from the Nepali cuisine. Generally, momos are made with finely chopped freshly harvested vegetables with an option of minced meat. A momo is similar to Chinese baozi, jiaozi, and mantou, Mongolian buuz, Japanese gyoza, Korean mandu and Turkic manti. These momos are tender and have a bit of heat from the chili and a light crunch from the bell pepper and onion. Drunken Noodles These drunken noodles aren't spicy like the traditional Thai drunken noodles but yet more mild in flavor, which is surprising as the reason they are called drunken noodles is due to the dish's reputation for being a popular late-night street food option that packs the heat. There are variations on the recipe, but there are some ingredients that are usually included such as Thai basil, vinegar, chili peppers, and peppercorns. This dish had all the standard ingredients but not the heat. The dish is filling and flavorful and will pair well with a nice cold beer. For those who do not indulge in libations, a mango lassi will do. The people working at this truck went out of their way to make sure that Thing Two and I were pleased with our meal and offered the momos for free because of the extended wait time for the food (color me impressed). There are tables in front of the truck where customers can wait for their food. Thing Two and I enjoyed our mango lassis at one of the tables while we waited.
