Food stylists wouldn't need to shellac or plasticize the frosting on these cupcakes to take perfect images of seemingly mouthwateringly delectable cupcakes. They looked SO good that I had to buy two: a chocolate-frosted vanilla cupcake, and a vanilla frosted vanilla cupcake. I really shouldn't have. However, from a taste/flavor/moistness perspective, these cupcakes are MEGA-disappointing. These are possibly the driest least flavorful cupcakes I have ever had in my life. I saw a bunch of my friends bought this beautiful cake and every time i asked where they buy it they answer Cupcake cafe. So for my birthday i decided i want a cake from here. I bought the bohemian walnut with maple cream. Sooo gooodddd!!!! Not so sweet but just right. I had flowers deco on my cake, i would suggest that if you do get a cake from here with flower decos, carry it like a freaking baby!! Nice tables to sit at and stare out the window, lots of newspapers lying around and I like how you get the milk yourself out of a vintage ice box. All this equals 3 stars. Would've been 5+stars but for the cupcakes. Take my word for it, unless you like gnawing on a stick of butter pass on the cupcakes. Yuck. As pretty as they are don't be tempted. Beautiful, tiny, tasty $3 cupcakes. The cupcakes are very pretty, with flowers and colorful icing. That said they are tiny, there is nothing wrong with that. One was by far enough, as it was very sweet. I tried a maple walnut one. The maple icing made it taste like french toast. Good, but sweet. The cake itself was nice and moist, the walnuts gave it a great taste. I just couldn't believe it was $3 each. Really liked the big slab table up front. The cupcake craze started in New York years ago. I remember back in the early 90's, the Cupcake Cafe was a hidden location for those in the know. On an dismal corner in Hell's Kitchen, with an unassuming black hand-painted sign was this simple bakery and restaurant that turned out some of the most beautifully decorated cakes and cupcakes in the city. You'd see the product in Dean and Deluca and think, this came from that little dingy place by Port Authority? I've heard that it moved from the original location, so I will have to check it out. The cupcakes are old-school - heavy buttercream frosting, slightly dry cake - but they are still beautiful. although an avid reader of yelp, the only reason i signed up for a yelp account was to review cupcake cafe. The cupcakes are pretty, but pretty doesn't make up for bad cake or bad service. Their cake is mediocre at best, and the service from manager to the people behind the counter are extraordinarily inept and contentious. There are so many great bakeries with friendly people in the city that there is no need to go to an OVERLY expensive place that have terrible service. Perhaps your experience would be better if you take the cupcakes home and let them defrost first (WTF!) but if you're looking to enjoy a cupcake anytime between 15 mins of your purchase, don't go here. Meh. First of all, people should understand that there are many different types of "buttercream". As far as proper French buttercream, this place gets it right. French buttercream is made mostly with egg yolks, butter and sugar syrup and is extremely rich and light without being too sweet. Other places will mix powdered sugar with some butter and call it buttercream and that's the stuff that is tooth-rotting sweet (like Magnolia). Apples and oranges. I prefer proper French buttercream, so Cupcake Cafe gets points for that. The actual cake part, however? AWFUL! It is dense, dry, flavorless and heavy. In other words: inedible. All the delicious French buttercream in the world is not enough to disguise the abysmal, sad little cake underneath. If I could marry Magnolia's cake with Cupcake Cafe's buttercream, it would be perfection. Until then, I guess I'll have to keep making my own at home. read more

My friend and I found this place while walking and decided to go in, seeing as the name suggests they're all about cupcakes. I guess they are, but the cupcakes themselves are in the very back. We were greeted by a nice young guy behind the cupcake counter (hi Nathan!), but the older man who worked there was quite odd and grumpy. He actually took the cupcake that I had brought in from another store (look, no judging, I'm a cupcake-a-holic!) and was examining the packaging. Apparently Burgers and Cupcakes down the street packs cupcakes to-go the same way this guy supposedly innovated (upside down coffee cup with a lid, the cupcake resting on the lid). After that weirdness, the older man walked away and we struck up a conversation with the very nice, quite intelligent guy serving the cupcakes. He was pretty cool and we chatted about cupcakes and good NYC eats for a few minutes. We decided on the vanilla/vanilla cupcake and also got a chocolate/chocolate to-go. We let them sit out a while--the advice of the young man--and that was some good advice. Nothing ruins a cupcake like a chilly density. I'll be honest, the cupcake was okay--just okay. I liked the vanilla a bit better, and my friend liked the chocolate better. The cake was just kind of average and the frosting was silky, but lacked a deep flavor. I do have to trust a place that's been in business here in the city for 25 years, though. That says something. Perhaps I should try a different flavor next time and see if my opinion changes. A friend and I decided to drop by after reading an article in New York Magazine. We work nearby and had been looking for a new place to take a coffee break. Before we set out I consulted my trusty reviewers on yelp, as I do before I go anywhere these days and almost backed out because of all the bad reviews. Alas my co-worker insisted we go because the cupcakes looked so darn cute in the magazine pictures. The decor is very quaint and pretty. Indeed I think it would be a very nice location for writing a paper or chatting over a cup of coffee. The cupcakes are decorated with intricate icing flowers. Struck by the cuteness of the place and the beauty of the cupcake, I foolishly accepted the half my lovely, generous coworker offered me. Bad choice!!!!!!!! First of all the frosting tasted stale and gross. You know how if you leave ice cream in the freezer for too long and it absorbs all the other smells. That's what the frosting tasted like. The cake itself was incredible dry almost inedible. I didn't want to hurt my friend's feelings so I had to lie and say that I was saving the rest for later and then discreetly throw it in the trash after work. Also besides the terrible taste another thing totally put me off this place. The workers here are not very sanitary. The guy who gave us our cupcake held open a trash can lid for another customer and then proceeded to remove our cupcake from the glass fridge with the same hand. GROSS!!!! Just got back from a visit to Cupcake Cafe. Unlike most of the other reviews, I went there purely for the coffee. I heard that they make a mean cup o' Joe so..had to check it out. I love espresso based drinks so even though it was a sweltering day, I ordered up a hot latte. Just as I read and heard, it was excellent. For espresso aficionado's this may not be the place to check out because the "Barista" doesn't seem to be into to making the greatest latte possible as other places like grupmpy's etc. do. The espresso was amazing simply because they have an amazing espresso machine. La Marzocco. The steamed milk was average, which is such an integral part of a latte. The espresso I have to say was better then most I've had. Nice and strong, which is how I like it. All in all, I would definitely go back for the almost perfect latte and great environs. read more

You know, this is place isn't bad. I'd give it 3.5 if I could, but the guy behind the counter is nice so I'll round up. It's a little small, a little creaky which I like, and is a quintessential anti-corporate cafe. The location is pretty bad, so I don't go out of my way to go there, but that also means it's somewhat perfect because where else can you stop in for a chilled out cup of coffee in a rustic setting on a walk from uptown to midtown along 8th, 9th or 10th aves? With such a close proximity to the Port Authority, this place manages to keep out both the weirdos and the suits, but it doesn't feel oppressively hip or anything. Anyway, I always grab something simple like a cup of iced coffee (their coffee is darn good) and have tried their pastries which I recall being excellent. I've had some meetings there, and they have a great assortment of table types - small to large, booths to standalone tables. Well by this time I had to dismiss her because she was going to end up with cake on her face...Literally! I ended up waiting 45 mins and I was given a cake... I Rebecca one of the decorated did her best to save the day and gave us a mini cake for the troubles, well needless to say while we were rushing back with the cake Rebecca called me to inform me that the cake that was given to us was the WRONG cake! Dainty, pretty cupcakes (these are the smallest I've seen) with sugary flowers on top. The vanilla frosting was very good and I can taste that they use high quality ingredients. There is a serious flaw though; the cake is way too dry. Such a shame. The shop is cute too, with mismatched chairs and an old time bakery feel. I still think it's better than Sweet Sugar Sunshine (moist cake, ugly cupcake) and Billy's (too simple). It's a sophisticated cupcake with promise. Have gone here for years and loved the cakes. Today I picked up 3 cakes for my daughters birthday. While they were putting one in the box I questioned if the box was big/tall enough. The employee said it was completely fine...after arriving home I open the box to smushed flowers and one completely off. I called to see what could be done and pretty much the guy didn't think it was a big deal. I heard things like, "get over it", "you bought 3 cakes what's the big deal?" When I told him it was a cake display for my daughters first birthday he told me "who cares it's edible and it's not like she will remember any way" I was offered a lame 20 dollar credit towards my next purchase haha yeah right. This is one of the places that makes NYC so magical, so generous, and play so fast and loose with the time continuum. Cupcake Cafe is often invisible from the street. Inside, you will feel like you are stepping into the best parts of New York from the late 80s-90s. This is a pre-computer coffee shop (though they do have wifi). There is no pretense here, just a strong community of locals, a giant slab of marble with stacks of old New York Times and house plants, and the very best cappuccino I have ever had in my life. Plus a sprawling bakery in the back turning out cupcakes and cakes to order at reasonable prices. This place is by far the best thing in mid town, and one of my absolute favorite spots in the city. read more

The cake is SO dry, and the frosting dribbled over the sides as if it either a) was heated up...it did feel a little warm, or b) because it was sitting for a long time. Yes, New Yorkers are spoiled by the multitude of cupcake spots, so it is understandable that there are many better spots for the perfect cupcake. Yet, this little place is cute, and has a really charming atmosphere. In addition, the marble table in the front is a rather awesome element, which added a lot to the experience. I have to say though, that my cappuccino, although had me waiting 5 minutes to be prepared, was one of the best I have had in my life. The meticulous attention to detail and making each cup from scratch, slowly and carefully results in a more than satisfying cap, and one that is hard to forget. Cupcake-wise, my only criticism was that the cake itself is a little tough to be considered a true cupcake, but I personally found it original in it's own way. After all, not all cupcakes aught to taste alike, and these were a little more grown-up, if you will. The frosting is to die for. Will go back, next time I am in NYC. read more

And you can get really cold milk to wash it down with, which I think is critical. I have never had a better cupcake. The room where you sit is awkwardly shaped and decorated with bric-a-brac. There's a slovenly, scraggly-bearded man with an insouciant look near the front counter. If he has ever uttered the words "May I help you?" it was a long time ago. As we passed him in silence, he said "Is it something I DIDN'T say?" Apparently, these people are serious about making quality cupcakes. They dispense with everything else, including customer service and decor. And they're not afraid of scaring off customers with sardonic remarks. Now called "Cup Cake Cafe @ Casa," I found this joint to be somewhat lacking in just about everything. Friends in town suggested breakfast at Cupcake Cafe, which we tried a couple years ago. They only serve waffles with fresh fruit, but it was quite good. On that fond memory, we headed there to find the original cafe closed, so we turned back a block to Casa, when I noticed the change of name on the window. I don't want to get into too detailed a description, but the place was pretty unprepared for the number of people who showed up for breakfast. There was only ONE waffle maker - we were told the other had a short, so it became a stand for the boom-box - and there were two other orders prior to our five. It took about an hour for the waffles to be done, so we were served piecemeal. Beyond the marble slab which served as a table, there were very few seating options. We weren't able to sit at the table due to other customers, so we parked on some pew-like benches with small glass end table providing the only space for our meals. Most of us just put the plates in our laps. The service was also non-existent. Other than going to the counter to order the waffles, we had to get coffee in the back for some reason, and the people there were less than friendly. In the end, for five waffles, a couple of coffees and three orange juice boxes, the bill came to over $60! Although the waffles are good, it just doesn't seem worth the expense and discomfort to eat there. If you plan to just grab a cupcake or coffee and sit and read, this place could be okay, but I don't plan to ever go back to Casa again. read more

This is a cute cozy little cafe. I have never tried their cupcakes, but I can tell you the waffle is quite tasty, which I ordered this morning and paired with a mug of soy latte. My friends tried two different donuts and a bread, but discovered that they were all way dense and heavy. So maybe pastries aren't the way to go. If you come here, and want to order a waffle, expect a really long wait, because it's essentially a one-woman shop - she makes the waffles and coffees in the front while you wait and then you pay and tote your plate and mug to an open seat in the front or back. If you just order a ready-made pastry or cupcake and coffee, then you wait less. Prices average. I paid $9.50 for my waffle and soy latte plus a $1 tip. The ambience inside is old...and old. I will preface this review by saying it will be written through the tinted lenses of nostalgia, but since I no longer live in the NYC area and see that it's still open and operating, feel absolutely compelled to write this. I first encountered one of their fantastic cupcakes back in the early 90's, when a friend had them catered in for a work party and recall being flabbergasted at how delicious and aesthetically beautiful they were. I used to go and pick up cupcakes and cakes for any very special occasion, and their recipients used to be floored at their beauty. I've lived in the city for years, and I've never run into service as rude, nasty and downright borderline crazy as I did my last (and I mean my LAST) time at Cupcake Cafe. I loved the place it its old location, a few blocks downtown. Cupcakes were OK, but other baked goods, especially the corn muffins and apple pie, were sensational, if pricey. When they moved to their current location, that all changed. The layout and design of the place is really appealing, with a big, marble-topped common table in front, lots of little nooks and tables throughout, and free wifi. Great place to get out of the rain. The coffee isn't bad, but the price is ridiculous. $2 for a disappointingly small mug, and $1 refills. It'd be fine if the mug was even the size of a small Starbuck's coffee, but it looked to be around ten ounces. I still kind of liked coming here, until my first, and last, encounter with the baked goods, and what must be the already mentioned Nasty Bearded Barista. I met a friend for coffee (me) and tea (her), and she bought us each a big, pretty, fluffy glazed donut. Like the cupcakes mentioned here, these donuts looked terrific. At the first bite it became clear that they were far from fresh; dry, tasteless and overly chewy, they had to be at least a day old. My friend went up to the Bearded Barista and asked if the donuts had really been made today. He insisted that they had been, as he'd picked them up himself. We decided to chuck the donuts and go elsewhere for sustenance. Bearded Barista actually tried to be nice, giving us back our money for the donuts, but repeating he'd "picked them up" today. My friend and I reiterated, not at all in a nasty way, that they weren't fresh. Bearded Barista lost it, snapping at us that he had indeed gotten the donuts that morning, and he didn't appreciate being called a liar, and he'd given us our money back, so what more could we want? We were already leaving, and this tirade just made us want to leave more quickly. Barista went on to say that there was a "new baker," and implied that any problems with the donuts were the baker's fault. I don't know where they actually bake their products, but clearly it's not on premises, and after his harangue he seemed to be saying that although he'd picked up the donuts that morning, he had no way of knowing if they'd actually been baked that morning. In which case, why did he whack out and say we were calling him a liar? We never said he didn't pick up the damn donuts that morning (why would we care?), only that they weren't fresh, and he all but admitted he had no way of knowing if the donuts he'd picked up were fresh or not. Yet he still flipped out with that "I really don't appreciate being called a liar" line. This guy really needs to find another line of work; he clearly can't deal with serving the public. We went to the Dunkin' Donuts at 40th between B'way and 8th and were happy to get perfectly fresh donuts from a smiling and cheerful girl behind the counter. I will never, ever go back to Cupcake again. From now on Empire, across the street, will get all my business. read more

Cupcake Cafe makes me happy! Looks like some people have had bad experiences, but my chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting was, as Rachel Ray would say, yummo! Not too sweet like the one I got at Billy's Bakery, and the frosting was deliciously buttery. The place has moved from its previously semi-ghetto storefront on the east side of 9th into a much nicer, larger space on the west side of the street. The interior is very eclectic and cute. I would love to hang out there with a book and watch all the characters, linked together only by little frosted cakes, come and go. The cupcakes come in different sizes, and the smallest one, the size of a 6-year-old's fist, costs a whopping $2.50. Came here before my yoga class since I was in the neighborhood, this is my first visit. I tried their mocha latte and paid with the CUPS app, which help strike a conversation with the gal at the counter that greeted me. Overall, the service is great and friendly. This shop is like a mom and pops shop with some of the best quality cup cake I've taste. I ordered one of their newer flavor, pumpkin with cream cheese which was lip smacking delicious. The price range can be a little high for the size, but for the taste I wouldn't complain. The bakery bake their cupcakes fresh daily, and each cupcake is like a work of art on their own. read more

Dodgy, a bit dirty with age (not actual dirt) it was charming and bright and usually a welcome respite from the cold or the heat or the exhaust from the nearby entrance to the lincoln tunnel. But that was the atmosphere. The eponomous cupcake was a disappointment...dry with a buttercream that had little to no flavor, and a texture that almost always was more insipid than smooth. Other products were better -- a blueberry coffee cake, a pie, donuts. The new location is a shock of injustice combined with the darkness of a forgotten closet. The front of the shop is for coffee drinks, and the back is dark....lighting far from ideal to highlight the attractiveness of the baked goods. Coffee service is good, but the space and the pastry truly suffers. Gone is the charm. Now it has the feel of a abettoir or a flophouse. read more
