I have been to the store located in the UWS, and several times, and the staff has not been friendly. Today, I went in, I was friendly and the 2 women working there, never even smiled. I have spoken with a few other people about the atmosphere in the store, and they too, have experienced the less than welcoming reception. She gave me really good advice and was honest about the flavors. I decided to order a custom chocolate cake with additional toppings, opting for the tropical flowers. I wasn't aware that this business was Kosher, and the cakes were dairy and gluten free. So I didn't love the flavor and thought it was pretty dry, but I think this could be a great option for anyone who has a kosher diet. I usually go to the UES location but I happened to be in the UWS area a few months ago and wanted to stop at By the Bakery to buy some baked goods for my friends since I love this bakery and want everyone to know how wonderful it is! I got two bags of their almond cookies and four of their cupcakes: two black and white cupcakes (chocolate cupcake with white frosting) and two of the "M" cupcakes (vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting). This was my second time having their almond cookies and it was still delicious and not too sweet! I also had their "M" cupcake before so this time, I tried their black and white cupcake. It was okay, a tad bit bitter for me and reminded me of an oreo, I wouldn't get it again but that's just my preference. My friends who have tried their black and white cupcakes loved it though. Their "M" cupcake still remains the superior cupcake flavor and just overall my number one item from this bakery! Both locations seem to be consistent in their products, however, two things I noticed different in terms of this location was that I couldn't just enter the bakery, you need to wait for the employee to ring you in. And they also packaged the almond cookie bags kind of fancy, they wrapped it with a ribbon and attached their logo on the bag. I thought it was a cute touch :) read more

I highly recommend the cookies from here. I got a bunch of gingerbread cookies to bring to a dinner party where people had various dietary restrictions. They were such a hit! I have to say I'm a little disappointed by the cakes here. Don't get me wrong, they are very good, but they are way too sweet in my opinion. They sell their packaged cakes at Whole Foods and you can see how many grams of sugar is in one slice and it's actually crazy. Was I concerned about visiting this place so late in the day? Yes. Was I disappointed? .....being gluten-free and dairy-free, i am used to disappointment... Giving it one star for a few reasons. For starters i was dressed in streetwear attire, i walked past the bakery and was really excited to see non dairy and gluten free! Upon entering there are two young ladies it's a fairly small bakery. After a lot of searching, I discovered a few things: 1) The website states "all of our baked goods are gluten-free & dairy- free ...& certified kosher" 2) everything is made by hand 3) freshness is key 4) they deliver ! I placed an order for a bunch of cupcakes & the lemon poppy mini cake. Well I wish I had more photos but the cupcakes literally disappeared before I could turn around and get one for myself. No problem because the lemon poppy mini cake was totally delicious! It had a perfect balance of sweetness offset by intense lemon - but it was the way the flavors were balanced that really impressed me. Not too sweet, not too tart, just perfect! Unfortunately most gluten free pastry shops predominantly use soy in everything. I have a problem with soybean. There are two pastry options without soy. I had to look for kosher pastries for an event. I found them online and I went to take a look and "sample". I am opposing gluten free and dairy free regimen unless you ahve. a real medical reason for that. But they are GF and dairy free and Kosher. The girls at the counter were very kind and patient, answered all my questions. I tried the peacan chocolate cookies, the raspberry bar and the Linzer and I have to say, I was surprised. THe raspberry was nice though the crust was ruther dry and hard (understandably so) the pecan chocolate cookies was delicious, crumbly and moist and the linzer was also tastey and the crust was les fakey than a regular one but not hard like the raspberry one. Ever since buying my first cake from By the Way, I was already thinking about what flavor I'd try next. I couldn't resist ordering another layer cake to bring to a holiday gathering and I made sure to place my order early enough for pick up. I ended up settling on the latte layer cake and it was so delicious!! I enjoyed it more than the double chocolate one. It's a vanilla cake with latte frosting and my only gripe is that there weren't more chocolate covered espresso beans on the top. I also ordered a gingerbread from their Christmas menu this season - it was a little pricey at $7 per cookie. Gingerbread is one of my favorites and I was a tiny bit disappointed with how crumbly my cookie was, but it may have just been from an off batch because everything else that I've tried from this bakery is amazing and I'm so grateful that they offer such delicious gluten-free desserts :) read more

Both my gluten free and gluten full friends and family rave over their creations - they are as tasty as they are beautiful.
