Trekking to Secaucus isn't easy, especially coming from Jersey City. But if you end up in the area, it's worth the trek to stop by Cumin n Eat for some great Indian food. We got here super early when the place was empty. We figured this is due to most Indians eating dinner fairly late (and it being a Monday on a holiday weekend), but we didn't mind. Ended up ordering the following: Mango Lassi: Yummy and not super sweet. Chili Paneer: Ordered this medium, but damn this had a kick to it. Was very good though and finished every bite. Mixed Veg Chettinad: Ordered this medium and this was also super tasty. Wasn't super spicy. Was very hearty. Ate this with a Roomali Roti. Also came with rice. We had enough for a meal's worth of leftovers. We spent around $50 (including 20% tip) for all of this. Pretty good deal for some great food. read more

My partner and I were going to be seeing a movie at the nearby Regal Theater so we stopped by Cumin N Eat to have dinner beforehand. This restaurant had several favorable reviews on Yelp so I figured we'd give it a chance. When we approached we saw a couple families eating inside (one at a large table) so I took this as a good sign. The interior of this restaurant is roughly "L" shaped, with enough seating for about 40+ people to sit inside including an area that is partly walled off for a private dinner. There is a counter across from the entrance to both order take out and for the staff to get their work done. The space is pretty big and even if every table was filled with people it would not feel particularly crowded. The decor is nice but feels like this space was once a different restaurant and then modified slightly to be this one. This restaurant is definitely understaffed. One gent seated us and another came over to take our order. Once we were set up with water and our order was taken to the kitchen one guy went out and kind of vanished for the rest of the meal. Now, I have to say our food came out much faster than I expected (within 15 minutes) and their service was definitely courteous and quick. That said, once the food was put down - that's it - no one ever checked on us for the rest of the meal and it took some doing to get our check. I wanted my water refilled but no one was ever available to do so. Most of the time the staff disappeared into the back and the one guy out front was too busy stocking the fridge with drinks to pay attention to us. So be warned, service will be uneven. So here's a rundown of what we had: Samosas (4 in an order) A potato filled pastry shell that is fried. This dish was a great example of the dish. Lots of flavor and great texture. I'd definitely get it again. Paneer Saag This mixture of blended greens and cheese is one of my favorite dishes, but different restaurants make it in different ways. Some blend the greens only a bit, allowing the leaves to be obvious in the creamy mixture. Other places basically create a green puree, and that is how Cumin N Eat does theirs. Neither way is "wrong" but I prefer the more "leafy" version. Still, this had some good flavor though a bit lighter than I'm used to. Still, I would get this dish again. Chicken Tikka Masala This is a good "baseline" dish for any Indian restaurant. I have had many good examples of this dish over the years from a variety of Indian restaurants and they always taste slightly different. This version was a bit less creamy and more "tomato forward" than I normally would expect, but like the Paneer Saag this is not a bad thing, just different. It was tasty and the chicken was nicely cooked. On top of rice this was very tasty. Plain Dosa One of the big draws of this place was their massive Dosa which was about the width of our table! This is freshly made and includes some potato and three dipping sauces. I think I liked the potatoes the most but the dipping sauces were nice to have. Next time I want to try the version stuffed with Stuffed with potatoes and onions. Cumin N Eat is a good Indian restaurant and I really enjoyed the food. I just wish the service had been more attentive. Still recommended! read more

I'm a couple of weeks late on this review, but I stop in with Red. She orders her butter chicken, and I order lamb Vindaloo. We both order mild spice, and butter naan. Everything comes out fresh and hot. Every bite is a delight, and the waiter even remembers what we like to drink and often order. Not only one of the best restaurants in the area, but some of the best service. Remember, you can choose your spice level, and probably ask for none, if you like. Indian food immediately came to mind! Cumin N Eat's menu is a bit unique because you pick your protein and then the cooking style. It was a little confusing at first but actually is a more efficient way to order any dish you want the way you want it. The Chicken Makhani aka Butter Chicken was cooked with a mild curry sauce, the chicken was tender, and portion was great. It had a touch of sweetness but great flavors overall. The Lamb Chettinadu was my favorite of the two! The Chettinadu is a famous spice medley from Tamil Nadu, a south Indian state. It was rich, aromatic, and had many layers of spices. I also enjoyed the caramelized onions on top which balanced out the savory, tender, and gamey lamb. The Butter Naan was pretty good and the basmati rice was fluffy and aromatic. A nice restaurant to enjoy some delicious Indian food. The restaurant has nice vibes but the chairs and tables are very low quality. I liked how their menu has been setup. Each type of appetizer or entree is listed with all the ways they can make it. The style of cooking is explained on the menu as well. I really liked the chicken biryani, even though its not cooked the real biryani's way, it's more like Pulao style. The goat curry was delicious too, but I felt it was more like lamb than goat actually. Chicken tikka was nice too. Didn't like shrimp korma that much, the korma wasn't cooked the way I was expecting it. The Paneer Dosa was the best item for me. Huge dosa, served with three different types of sauces and of course paneer. Dosa was soft, crispy, easy to break into pieces. We had four people and we still couldn't finish the whole dosa, it's that big. I'll surely comeback just for the dosa. Their mango lassi is also really good. It's pre-made and stored in bottle. We had been to their Allentown, PA branch and got to know they have one in Jersey too. It was 40 mins drive from Parsippany. It is located in a really nice complex. A couple of hotels (Holiday Inn, Hyatt & Marriott) and many good restaurants (Red Lobsters-Tokyo Hibachi-Chillis, etc..) are in this area near this restaurant. Okay, I am losing track here, coming to this one- it is at the back of the complex (took some time to find out this) As I mentioned I found their Allentown branch top-notch, so expectations were the same. We got the table and settled ourselves. There were a couple of servers taking care of all the tables, so service was on the slower side. We ordered like tons of items as we wanted to try most of them. Fish Apollo - We had already tried Fish Marina at Allentown (if you did not try it, go ahead, try it. Fish pieces marinated with their 'specialty' masala, deep fried in oil). Apollo is the opposite of that - Fish pieces in semi-gravy - 4/5 Paneer Apollo - not sure why my friend tried that, I wanted him to have paneer chili so that we can have one extra preparation on the table (all non-veg folks are like me only? :P ) - crunchy coated small panner cube-shaped pieces with apollo gravy- 4/5 Chicken Lollypop- they deep fried that, it should be not that fried, instead of golden brown, it was black. Still, it was good. Comes with schezwan sauce and onions - 3.5/5 Papdi chaat - (Imposter Alert!!) - you might ask why Papdi chat among all those great dishes. Dosa and all - nope not his things. hahaha (Bw Papdi chat was good, but it had no potatoes) - 3.5/5 Mutton Biryani - well, being a big-time biryani lover, I could easily rate it as 8.5-9 out of 10. First and foremost, the food here is good. I've eaten here and ordered take out multiple times, so the fact that I've been back should speak to their food. With that being said, a recent experience has left me less than pleased regarding their service. To keep it short; I called ahead to pick up take out. Confirmed that it was the Secaucus location, gave them my name, they said 30 minutes. I arrived after 20 minutes, they said it will be a few more minutes, I said no problem I will walk around and be back. I come back 10 minutes later, and they say they never received an order by that name. I said I called this location, confirmed it was secaucus, and then proceeded to show the guy working the register my call history(after which he touched his phone and gave me a look, pretty much confirming that yes that's the right number and called 30 minutes ago). I said, ok clearly my name was just marked down wrong, so do you have an order for 2 tiki masala's and a garlic naan, because that's obviously my order. Guy didn't answer the question, he just said "we don't have an order here for Dan, just Jannen(or something like that)". I reiterated, ok but if that order is for two tiki masala's and a garlic naan it's clearly mine. Guy just says "I'm sorry, we don't have an order by your name I cannot help you". 30 minutes wasted, which could have been shorter if this all happened the first time I came to pick it up and he said a few more minutes. No logic was used this day on that cashier's part. And to top it all off, they called me three hours later asking if I was coming to pick up my order because it's been so long. Obviously I explained the situation to the guy on the phone but at that point why would I want to waste my time and money to go back? At the very least, if someone is reading this that is thinking about ordering take out, learn from my experience and triple check what they list your order under, even though any other establishment would just use common sense in that situation. read more

Ordered takeout: Chicken Biryani 4/5. The marinade on the chicken was incredible. Perfectly seasoned and chicken also so tender, well cooked, and well-portioned. The chicken component itself deserves a 5/5. The rice however, also good, but personally, I like when the marinade has merged uniformly, or when the rice has been evenly coated with the saffron water/turmeric or whatever flavor and color blend is used. The rice was also on the greasier side. Therefore for personal preference reasons, the rice was a 3/5 for. The chicken was the star indeed, and the spice level was also magnificent. Hence a 4/5. To note, two other people whose opinions I tryst give the biryani an overall 5/5. So it's still pretty good to say the least. Chicken 65 This was a 5/5 dish. Good portion, well-spiced, and very aromatic. Chicken 65 done well. Fabulous. Atmosphere: 5 I came with my husband and his parents after his doctoral graduation at a nearby venue. We were alone in the restaurant but it felt clean and was well ventilated. We got to sit by the windows which was so nice because it overlooked the greenery. The waiter was patient and friendly.
