2.5/5 - Culpepper's has provided me with years worth of inconsistent food and service. Pastries are either fresh and taste somewhat decent, but usually they're stale or taste like all that was dumped into the stand mixer was sugar as most times their desserts are unbearably sweet. Depending on the day and time, service can be either super quick with friendly/professional staff OR very long with staff that are more curt. Desserts are usually a hit or miss. We recently went to buy an apple pie and I'm almost sorry to say that it's one of the worst apple pies I've ever had. It's not enough to say that apple mixture itself tasted like nothing but sugar and what might be cardamom - as if the baker has never heard of salt and subbed cardamom for cinnamon - but the pie crust had no structure or integrity to it to a point that I would've been better off taking the time and making my own from scratch. On the other hand, we had this two-tiered black and white cake with chocolate and vanilla frosting and it was really good, except a little dry. It's such a shame that they're inconsistent with their desserts. When they first opened a decade ago, they actually made really good desserts consistently. Sad to say, this isn't the case in recent years. Though I've heard their breakfast sandwiches can be decent, I'm unsure if I'll make a trip again to try. read more

Lots of tables and a 'lunch counter' (something you don't see much anymore). Looks like they get a lot of 'regulars'. A great location for hearty, tasty, and cheap breakfast! I suggest the Culpepper meal which comes with your choice of French toast or pancakes, sausage or bacon, choice of toast, home fries, and eggs any style. I honestly can't ever finish it but it is a lot of bang for your buck! On Saturday and Sunday mornings it can get pretty busy for brunch. You order and pay as soon as you walk in and then find a clean table for you and your party to sit at. Once food is ready, the servers will bring the food to you and enjoy! Just went in today and it was busy, tried to order the holy cross home fries to go but first I was told the fryalator wasn't turned on I would have to wait. Then I was told it was being cleaned and I would have to wait a long time if I wanted to? Really? It's 830 in the morning and you would think the fryalator would be on at the start of the day to run a good business. But I guess my order wasn't important enough. Not sure if I'll be back. The pastries aren't very good either. When I took mine out of the bag as soon as I got home, it tasted kind of stale and was a little chewy. I put it in the toaster oven, but this didn't improve matters much. Maybe I'll come back and try a breakfast sandwich, but I think I'll pass on the pastries. We have lived nearby for a few years now and have given Culpeppers quite a few tries. Most times, the food is just "fine", nothing special and certainly nothing to write home about. Recently, we had the worst Culpeppers experience and have finally quit giving it a chance. We got takeout of 2 "muffins" and 2 iced coffees and I was so disgusted with our food that I couldn't even eat it. The muffins are prepared in mini loaves, which wouldn't be an issue if they didn't make me gag as I attempted to eat them. The blueberry and banana nut loaf lacked any type of flavor and offered a texture that I can't even explain. I couldn't even drink my iced coffee as it tasted as though someone dropped it in a toilet and then poured it back into the cup. I am so sad to say that we won't be back, as we love to support local businesses, especially during covid times, but this experiences was terrible and I wouldn't recommend the bakery to anyone near or far. read more

My wife, daughter and myself dropped by Culpeppers Sunday morning, on the way to Mass on October 2. The establishment is extraordinarily unorganized. There is no signage to tell new customers, that are unfamiliar with their restaurant, on how/where/when to order. The menu is very hard to read as you are standing in line to order. No one gives you a table number nor do they ask your name. The waitress simply wanders around looking for you with your order getting cold. After a 30 + minute wait for two simple orders, the food was put on the table with only half the silverware. I waited for someone to return for help. I finally went up to the counter and stood for another 2-3 minutes and was told there was NO MORE CLEAN SILVERWARE and was given plastic. The food was not even mediocre. The Buffalo Chicken Salad was delicious a little on the expensive side for just iceberg lettuce a couple of tomato slices and cucumbers. Salad was a little hard to consume after seeing a small to medium sized four legged friend with a long tail go scampering across the floor. I asked the girl to "peek and see if he's started my sandwich if not I'll just go." (I've worked as a waitress and know how temperamental kitchen staff can be.) She looked. The help that was working on the morning of August 9, 2018 was atrocious. My friend has an allergy to gluten and inquired whether or not the home fries are made with wheat flour. The first 4 people asked, didn't know, and the cook nonchalantly said he didn't think so. No attempt was made whatsoever to refill my coffee, by multiple servers, when I was sitting at the counter with an empty mug for at least 15 minutes. It's important to note that it wasn't busy. Also I ordered two poached eggs and toast. It took 25 minutes to receive my order while the person I was with had a veggie omelette served to him within 10 minutes, albeit filled with uncooked veggies. I've been to this place three times as I work in the area. The first time was to grab a cake for a work party. The cake was dry and the frosting was that sickly sweet, grainy kind. No bueno. I liked the idea of supporting a local business but now we just get a sheet cake at wal mart which is much better. The next time I stopped in for a bagel with cream cheese. It took twenty minutes to come out and they had forgotten about it. I asked them after ten minutes and was chastised for being impatient. Asked again after twenty minutes and when the staff bothered to check, the chef hadn't even gotten the order. The bagel tasted okay. Nothing special. Today I stopped in again for a bagel. I had left home early and had plenty of time. Surely they couldn't possibly take another 20 minutes for a bagel, right? That had to be a fluke. It happened probably a year ago, surely this time would be different. Nope. Another twenty minutes and they had once again forgotten my order. A gentleman sitting at the counter commented that my bagel took longer than his whole breakfast. I asked them to cancel my order and refund my money as I was now late for work. The counter lady apologized and gave me a muffin on the house. The muffin, much like the bagel I at least received last time, was okay. I'm not sure if this place hates bagels, hates people who orders bagels, or hates me specifically, but I'm not going back to find out. The girl at the counter was waiting on someone which gave us time to peruse the bakery cases. She did allow some pushy woman who came in after us to just jump in front of us. She really should have pointed out to the woman that we were there first and she'd be right with them. We got a big box full of assorted goodies. All were at least good but some were spectacular. The BF really loved the coffee roll. I thought it was pretty good but not amazing. Those chocolate dipped almond crescents though ... oh damn were they good. I actually caught the BF stealing a bite of mine and had to finish it right then so he wouldn't! Walk yourself right in and find an open booth or spot at the counter, between the hustle and bustle of people eating and the uncleared tables. Get settled and be prepared to normally sit and wait for a bit before someone either notices you or feels like coming over to take your order. But once you pick something from their board-menu your meal will be out in no time! Take a second and breathe it in.. your eggs, homemade hash-browns, french toast, pancakes, toast, sausage, ham or bacon... you will be drooling.. Their hash-browns are TO DIE FOR!! I fall in love with them every time I order them. Nervous about skipping out on your regular chain coffee shop iced coffee? Worry no more.. I was extremely surprised and delighted when I ordered their Regular Iced Coffee. It wasn't watered down, bland, too sweet or "old" it was perfect.. kudos, Culpeppers! Anyone who knows me would be shocked that I'd visit a place that isn't clean or the staff is less than nice but I must say, all in all Culpeppers is a place to visit, you leave satisfied both tummy and pocketbook-wise! Breakfast review: not impressed. I love their baked goods, so I guess I was expecting a little more. It wasn't so much the food. The food was good. It was the service or lack of service. I was turned off immediately when I had to order at the register before sitting down. Really? Ok... Offered my omelet and cup of coffee and sat down. They only had sugar on the table, so I had to get back up to ask for some Splenda. Omelet came out and is delivered to my table... Looks great. Waitress leaves.... Oh, I need ketchup... I have to get up to get my ketchup. So the breakfast was good... Now my coffee is empty, and no one asked if I wanted more until I was getting my stuff together to leave. I guess if you sit at the bar, you might get better service... But when I go out to breakfast, I kind of expect a few things... Sugar alternative on the table, and endless coffee without asking. This place has been here forever, and I doubt they will change their ways anytime soon... So I will not be eating breakfast here again. read more

People talk a lot about Culpeppers, and I think that's why I'm rating low. For all the talk? I wasn't super impressed. My friend and I went in for breakfast. He got an omelet, I got an egg sandwich, and while neither were bad, neither were all that wonderful. We also got a bunch of the bakery items, which were good, but I really wasn't impressed. There's definitely better out there. However, it was cheap and the coffee was good, so it's not an awful trade off. There's just better out there. read more

The food they serve up and the quickness with which they serve the food makes up for any bad attitude you might encounter. Great diner type food. Any eggs meat toast home fries breakfast will be a great value. The chicken salad is a pretty epic sandwich. I reccomend CHicken salad on wheat toast with bacon lettuce and tomato. That and the turkey with mayo version of this sanwich are pretty much the best things you can get. Besides the fries. They don't always have fries, you have to ask. But when they do, oh boy. They must tripple fry these things. They are so crunch, so perfectly seasoned. You will thank god for creating the angry culpepper women who make these. Get it to stay get it to go, whatever. We love this bakery. We had driven by for years and never stopped. One day we needed dessert and got there just in time, 5 minutes before they closed for the evening. We picked a beautiful little Boston Cream Pie. It was only $8.99!! I love dessert so I also got a few other treats, mini cannoli, mini eclair... everything was perfect and the price was less than other bakeries. I could not believe how moist and delicious the Boston cream pie was, honestly the price was less than I'm used to for that size cake so I didn't expect much. We have returned a few times to get treats, breads, iced coffee... everything has been great! Planning to try them for breakfast or lunch soon!! Since we moved to the area a month ago, everyone has been telling us about this amazing little bakery down the street. We went on a Sunday to get to-go breakfast sandwiches. Bagels were fresh but the sandwiches were just average. The egg wasn't a fried egg but a huge, disproportionate egg that seemed like it was cooked in a microwave or something. All you could taste was a gross, chewy egg. At a place that serves breakfast, it should have been a nice fried or scrambled egg on the sandwich. The service also took FOREVER..we had to check on our order twice and we are very patient people. It's almost like they forgot about our order. Even though I won't be getting another breakfast sandwich, I do love their flavored iced coffee. I like that they have a drive through which makes things easier. And I'm excited to try their pastries or bring a pie or bread to an outing. read more

Have driven by this place for years and finally decided to stop in for a coffee on my way to rt 146...it strikes me as the type of place local Holy Cross students would frequent--super cheap diner food (complete with counter and stools, all the standard diner fare included), loads of baked goods (an impressive pastry counter, for sure) and plenty of space to sit and hang. I got a coffee (mediocre) and an elephant ear (stellar)...their "flips" (apricot, raspberry & others) look fantastic, as do their cookies, breads and cakes. The decor is dated, but the young ladies behind the counter are kind and seem to know their usuals by name. Definitely worth stopping at for a pastry--probably not the place to bring a date (they are closed by 5 or 6pm every day, anyways)...but not disappointing at all. read more
