I'm looking for alternatives after one year. As a small business owner who needs space to store inventory, I need two things: a dry, convenient space and reasonable, consistent pricing that allows me to grow my business over the long term. Do not be fooled by CubeSmart's "deals" or their sales pitch. This company preys on customers like a rabid vampire. The only thing you can count on is that your rent will increase every six months, like clockwork. And we are not talking increases of 2-5% to keep up with inflation, either. After six months, my rent increased 20%. Six months later, my rent was increased another 20%, for a total increase after one year of 40%--which equates to an additional $81 per month / $1000 per year. As a small business owner, there is no possible way I can absorb a 20% increase for inventory storage every six months. A $1000 increase is BRUTAL. And, damn near, criminal. And guess what, it'll go up another 20% in six months. Who treats their customers like this? ... A company that doesn't give a crap about their customers that's who. CubeSmart's only goal is to bilk their customers for as much money as possible until they get fed up and leave. Complain and you'll be told that "periodic increases are necessary to maintain their stellar service" and that "it's in the contract that rent increases may happen". Your service won't improve, nothing will change. It's not like they will suddenly start rolling out a red carpet for you each time you visit your unit. In what world is a 40% increase over the course of one year reasonable? Inflation is currently 8% (and falling). Either CubeSmart is terrible at running their business or they are purposely screwing their customers. You decide. Think about it this way: I don't live in this space nor can I legally work in this space. All I can do is store my inventory in a 10x15 space no larger than my living room ... My apartment rent went up $10 per month or $120 per year. Make sense to you? Nah, me neither. CubeSmart will not work with you on pricing. You will be given the option of moving your belongings or inventory to a new, similar unit to take advantage of online rates--which means moving 5000 pounds of inventory (in my case) every six months, sucking it up and paying the increase, or moving out. You're a captive, they know it, and they will take advantage of you as long as you are willing to pay their extortionate rental rates. Also, the access hours for this location are less than ideal (read: crappy), especially for people who vend at markets on the weekend. While the staff at Nickerson is terrific, I cannot recommend this company at all, especially if you are a small business. Look elsewhere. Update 6/23: Recently received my fourth rate increase in just under two years. Each increase ranged between 15% and 20%, the latest increase amounted to another $50 per month for a total increase of $190 per month ... I moved my entire inventory out immediately. Never again. So, let me start by saying the folks at the front desk are helpful and professional. But they can only do so much, and they're understaffed. What's the problem? We had two spaces: an outdoor parking space, and an interior storage unit. First problem, a year or so ago: found somebody else's stuff in our unit! Somebody had tossed a bunch of crap over the walls. Empty bottles, dirty blankets... yuck. We were promptly offered a new space, new lock, and they helped us move. Ok, so far. These things happen. Then, a month ago, somebody sideswiped our parked trailer. Camera footage eventually spotted it, but there's not really anything anyone could do about it. Scheduled repairs, OK. THEN, this past weekend, someone broke into our trailer and spent the night. Trashed the door and window, ransacked the inside, used the toilet (YUCK). Again, I emphasize, the front desk folks have been as helpful as they can be. There is only so much they can do, though, especially in the outside space. I appreciate their help. But. We've moved out. I cannot recommend this facility because of security issues. read more

This company violates its' contract with customers regarding rate increases and providing notice to customers of rate increases. Their contract allows for (predatory) rate increases with only 30 days notice to the customer but is not effective in contacting the customer. While in their front office, I witnessed a heartbreaking scenario of a struggling young woman who brought $76 in cash (some $1 bills) to pay for her storage unit. The front office told her that her rate had increased (but hadn't actually informed her. The young woman reviewed her contact information with the front office, which was correct, yet she had never received notice. An employee (different from the on-site manager) was callous to the point of being unprofessional in their treatment of her. I followed up with the District Manager, Natalie, at (610) 971-3227 regarding lack of notice to this young woman. I believe the District Manager waited me out after she reached out to me once but failed to respond to my continued efforts to get a hold of her. Despite these predatory business practices, the on-site manager, Alisha, is wonderful and cares. Some issues to be aware of: *you need to catch billing errors; *to cancel, you need to submit written notice of your cancellation, without you being provided an address to submit your cancellation notice (though all sign ups are easy and electronic); *measurements of units "do not refer to usable space and any referenced Cube size is given for illustration only" - I was shown units with long prongs sticking out of the walls, spaces with a floor that went up to my waist, and spaces with large metal beams covering much of the space; *monthly rent increases "without limitation"; and *notice of rent increases should be provided to the customer (a measly) 30 days in advance. It does not appear that this notice is being complied with, despite the contractual requirement to do so. read more

I was in a jam: I was shipping some packages and needed to redirect them to a storage unit--but they were already in transit. I e-mailed 5 different self-storage companies late on a Sunday night asking if they could offered package acceptance...starting, um, Monday morning? Before the office even officially opened for Monday, Darrell had answered every question, prepared all the necessary forms (prefilled with my name!), and set up my reservation. By 10am, the whole process was complete. In contrast, one other storage company replied to my e-mail on Wednesday; the others never answered. The facility was clean, well-lit, and easy to access. There was a wide, tall garage door immediately adjacent to the curb. There were heavy-duty carts available inside the entryway. The elevator was spacious. The unit was spotless. I checked my inventory; Darrell and team had received every single package in the expected condition and loaded them into my unit perfectly. read more

I've been at this storage unit since it was originally Nickerson St storage and then it became Bolt storage and now it is Cube Smart. It has gotten steadily worse each time it changes hands. Cube Smart's clear goal is to raise rates excessively and this past fall, they raised my rent again by 30-40%. I can't afford to store there and now have to endure the hassle of moving down the street. This is how they reward long time customers...by brutal rent increases. I get that periodic rent increases are necessary whenever something is rented but the magnitude of Cube Smart's increases are unbearable. And while it's minor compared to the rent issue, they run rolling lighting blackouts periodically. Understandable if they are trying to save on electricity, but there have been two occasions where I'm in my unit moving something heavy and the section of my floor blacks out causing me to maneuver in the dark. I run a small business myself and customer loyalty is huge. I've been loyal to this business for many years and huge rent increases is evidently my reward. read more

We have our own exp here but 1st to an encapsulation : Not sure if star ratings are generally indicative of exactly how to view using a certain business...that said...we've read through yelps collection of different storage facilities & their reviews especially within the west 15th Ave corrider including lower Ballard , both approx 14mnths back & just for clarity on this area today...unless we have missed an entirety of negativaty as to certain businesses where it's said or explained as predatory pricing ? Looks like Cube Smart is pretty much completely taken center stage...it also comes to mind our recent discussion with a person we saw moving items in to a ground floor unit...though we just wanted to ask what they thought of being able to access the storage from outside & all , this person wanted us to know he was nervous just in the 1st hrs about even short term affordability or even being able to budget with same given the hyperbole he was left with that day about xtra charges within mnths..if one reads thru responses from this place , it's like a literal shouting back against their very own clients , as if they think to avoid the discussion , but rather mumble unintelligble somethings while conveniently refusing responsibility & in this laying bare what when "predatory" is a almost necessary description...so here we are today , just have paid mnthly billing , storage was on our minds but more for a reorganizing effort & to eventually downsize , sound familiar ? Anyways , guess what ? Pulled mail from PO box today , going thru the stack , there's this tiny little card thing , almost looks throwaway ,the print is so tiny & almost like a AI driven thing , but to be sure & out of curiosity I'm looking @ this thing , what to find ? Inside even more tiny little type, but it's there all right , a demand for approx 23% additional payout right in the next mnth... is this real ? Well , I'd drop in the photo if for not maintaining personal privacy & likely allowing a direct attack from same...while Seattle has long ago gone into predatory over drive mode , wouldn't we all say this is rather the mountain tip top ? There are waiting lists with alternate storage @ the more reputable places , we'd have been on the top of those lists if we'd looked far enough ahead on this particular area of our life , oh the 23% mentioned right ? Same scenario what was it , 8mnths back if recall & in that situation this outfit backed down to a still crazy xtra charge while putting us up to using ourpersonal time..geez is this lack of hindsight or what ? Staff is friendly, prices are OK. Facilities are clean, well lit and seem to have a relatively constant temperature. Used them for about 2.5 years and it was easy to sign up and close out. No worries here! Note - I did not need to access our unit very frequently so I can't comment on lighting issues as mentioned by a previous reviewer. Recently had to acquire storage at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. I visited CubeSmart expecting to simply compare storage pricing bids and options I had received from other local storage companies. I spoke with Patricia and she could not have been more helpful, professional, accommodating or understanding of our needs. She took the time to walk through all options at each price point, demonstrating the dimensions and helping me to establish exactly how much space I would need while staying within my budget. Additionally, I am basically technically illiterate (a family friend is writing this as I dictate) and Patricia walked me through everything with incredible patience! As others have said in similar reviews, I strongly suggest skipping shopping around and to stick with CubeSmart as your first choice! read more

Staff Confused By Whether or Not They Prorate My storage unit bill was on ACH for payment due near the end of the month. Knowing we were going to close our new house the 2nd and move out of the unit the third we called to discuss the bill for our final month. We were told if we move out the day we promise we could pay the 6 days and go on our way. The employee removed the auto draft so we could pay in the office after moving out. I show up on the day I said I would with 3 movers and a truck to find out I couldn't get in. I go in the office to find out what's the deal and she says "I'm the manager" and even though we promised you a proration (I can see it in the notes as well) we don't do that and you owe the whole month. She said her employee was wrong. Then they held access to the building hostage while my movers were there until I pay the month bill in full. I never would have disconnected auto draft if I knew this would happen but that manager clearly was out to stick it to me. Thanks a lot! read more

I've only had great experiences interacting with the staff here. About a year ago, Patricia helped us set up our storage unit after we moved cross country. The process was super simple and personalized. Today, Chris helped us set up our second storage unit for my business supplies. Most of the process was taken care of over the phone, and I was really have to say, I was so impressed with Chris's professionalism and wonderful customer service skills. He helped me find a business storage unit close to our personal storage unit. When I went in the office to finish the process, they were extremely COVID-conscious (which I greatly appreciated!). Only one customer is allowed in the office at a time, everything is electronic, and he wiped off the iPad with a disinfecting wipe right in front of me before handing it to me. I had a great experience a year ago, and my experience today was no different (maybe even better, given all of the wonderful procedures they have in place to reduce COVID risk). Storage units are clean well-lit. Seems to have good security too. read more
