Came here for dinner a couple weeks ago and this little restaurant is definitely worth checking out. It was a bit of a wait for our food, they do not have a large staff and they stayed continuously busy the entire time we were there. Not a complaint by any means, just a heads up for anyone interested in coming here. I had a jalapeño chicken empanada, that was very good, the outside texture was different from what I'm used to, a little crispier than other empanadas. One member of my party had the plain chicken empanada that she said was also very good. Even though it was dinner time, I was able to get a lunch portion of the shredded beef meal, which for the price was really great. The shredded beef was phenomenal and I loved the rice and beans that accompanied it as well. The plantains were just all right, they were a little too hard for my taste. The inside of the restaurant does need a few updates, it's a very small eating area and it's definitely an older building. I also wish they had a better/bigger selection of beverages. Don't get me wrong, I love Jarritos, but it would have been nice to just have a glass of ice water, which is unfortunately not an option at this establishment. As a bit of an empanada nerd, none (yet) have been able to hold a candle to this place. Mind you, I always try to sample empanadas anywhere I see (food trucks, eateries, delis) and they all pale in comparison. Here are a few reasons why... First, many think empanadas are some sort of secret food from the outskirts of this planet. They are not. They are staple items in many countries (usually Latino). Bringing them, and exposing them, to our culture seems like a new, novel idea while others laugh. Secondly, the really good empanadas are made with love and passion. Some people will understand as it's not just following a cook book. It's more of a generational food. Grandma has been making them for a long time and the responsibility of making them gets passed through the family. Just because it looks like a hand pocket with something in it doesn't make it necessarily a good empanada. The outside could be disappointing. The inside could be underfilled. There's a lot of factors that going into it. I think the secret to Cuban Etty's is that they must have a grandma in the back, making them all day and all night long the perfect portion they're filled really nicely. They offer a number of different varieties, and even though their price has nearly doubled in the last few years, they are still worth it. Some food trucks and specialty empanada locations cell there's for nearly double, and they're still not as good. If you are a big fan of empanadas, you owe it to yourself to try Cuban Eddie's and see what you have been missing. read more

I know the pre-ordering process is a bit unconventional but I just can't get past how delicious this place is....and in River Vale of all places. Definitely not the place I thought would have amazing fried pork. Guys, usually when you get chicharron or fried pork chunks it's either got crunchy skin but the entire thing is dry/hard like a cracker OR it's soggy and the skin is rubbery/chewy. I mean I like pork bubble gum as much as the next guy but come on, who's passing up crunchy pork skin with juicy tender meat? The garlicky/citrus dipping sauce that it comes with is so good. Let's not forget the friend pork skins either. For 1.99 you really just can't go wrong. I haven't tried the Cuban sandwich yet but I'll be back... probably twice a day. read more

The heck happened to this place? Are there new owners or something? The last 2 times I have ordered from here were crazy. Missing entrees, wrong quantities, missing sauces/sides. Ordered delivery from here and was overall very satisfied with the food. Delivery took longer than expected, but the food was well packed and still warm when it arrived. Most of what we ordered were very good. Our favorites were the beef empanadas, chicken stew with potatoes, and grilled pork chops. I understand being short staffed. But you miss an entire entree, and three orders of Maduros. Not answer the phone but send you to a general voice-mail that is full. Yuck! Ordered fried pork belly chicharrones and the oil they were fried in was old and it tasted terrible. We also got roasted pork and it was highly salty. Got take out for four Friday night. Ropa, roast pork dinner and pork chunk dinner. Tried yellow rice, red and black beans, beef and chicken empanadas and tostones. Topped it all off with a flan. The roast pork was the best of the evening followed by the tostones and the ropa. Chicken empanada was bland but husband liked the beef. The yellow rice was also bland and both beans were a bit watery with not enough flavor. No one liked the pork chunks ...dry....and the flan was nothing like the ones we've been eating for 50 years. Always loved Cuban Eddie's food BUT tonight we Had takeout for dinner: beef and jalapeño empanadas which were excellent as usual BUT the beef picadillo was awful, dry and full of chunky sweet potoroos that made it even drier! The flavor was bland. The spicy shrimp was inedible, the sauce was basically water and Frank hot sauce, it was so acidic with no flavor and the shrimp was over cooked and rubbery! Had to share that we were very disappointed With our last order. The most basic and common of Cuban food order. Lechon asado and a Cuban sandwich. The pork tasted nothing like what they used to make which was pretty good in the past. It was maybe an American style pulled pork but did not taste good at all.
