The new owners have done a great job updating a Hillsdale staple. I love tune on a round roll.

Was driving to Park Ridge and looked for a good deli that makes good breakfast sandwiches. Ken's Deli came up on Yelp. It's very confusing where to order and it took some time before I got to place my order. The sandwich was edible but not that good. I don't understand how previous reviews said it was good. There was one egg, two slices of Taylor ham, one slice of cheese, hardly any ketchup but I could taste the pepper. The ambiance was very messy and only one table to eat family style. I used to work nearby about 8 years ago. One lunch break I came to Ken's Broadway Deli for the first time and ordered an Italian footlong sub to go, not realizing the gravity of the size of this sandwich. Whoever made it that day was a true artist that I hold in the same esteem as Botticelli or Michelangelo. When I tell you I still talk about this sandwich 8+ years later, I kid you not. Now that the new owners have been here for a while it was time for a visit. Ordered a cheesesteak and was excited to see how it stacks up to the competition around. When I got it. It was like no effort was put into it to make it stand out. It was some sliced steak heated up and laid on top of cheese inside the bread. In my opinion they could have chopped it up and mixed in the cheese with a tad of butter and more seasoning but as the picture shows. A sad cheesesteak. Definitely expecting more than what I got for the money. The hero bread was let down. On the up side, a Ham hero was a hero that was made to perfection. Great portion of ham, nicely sliced tomatoes and the right amount of Mayo I accompanied by the shredded lettuce. Now this hero was with it. Great personalities who work there. And clean. I'm a long time Hillsdale resident and have been going to Ken's for 20 years. The other day I stop in and ask the lady at the counter if she is the new owner She replied yes. I said my kids are in college and can't wait to come home for the holidays, they told me the first place they want to stop is Ken's. The lady ( the owner) replied to me.... " yeah well I have a love hate relationship with the kids that stop in here. " Is she kidding. ?? That was a major insult to me and my kids and to every kid that stops in that place. I remember going to Kens when I was in High School for lunch with all of my friends. That was the place to go. Friendly staff, great food, quick, etc. I moved out of the area and haven't had Kens in a lonnnnnnng time! Today, I happened to be in the area and thought "I could totally go for a Kens sandwich today!" Little did I know I would be treated the way I was. I called ahead of time asking if I could get a Taylor ham egg and cheese and quickly changed my mind to an Italian sandwich. Guy on the phone was nice and told me their Italian is "provolone, cappacuolo and Ham with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, oil and vinegar" I said, "alright can I make a little change? Instead of provolone I'll take mozzarella. And lastly substitute the cappacuolo for Salami." He repeats it back to me no issues all is great. I walk into this store and the old man who I believe owns the establishment with his wife asks me what I want. I say my name and go "the Italian sandwich"....... He starts telling me that my sandwich is in no way an Italian sandwich and I messed it all up. I simply say "well i guess people have a different way of getting Italians" this man proceeds to go off on me about MY sandwich - how it isn't an Italian sandwich if it has no cappacuolo. He should charge me extra for the ham but he won't. This is not a normal Italian. I did not say it correctly over the phone. On and on and on and on. At one point I look at him and go "I am not trying to fight with you about this please stop". This guy continues to mutter things for another good 5 mins. His wife has to step in and tell him "it's fine! I got it I will make it for her stop acting like this." He proceeds to tell her how my sandwich is not the normal Italian. It was the worst 5 minutes of my life standing there getting drilled about my Italian sandwich. I thought to myself is he the one eating it??? Why does he care so damn much!?!? I sincerely feel bad for that wife because you can just tell he is a handful. He is nasty, does not back down, continues to instigate, etc. I'm really upset I had this experience because overall I still love Kens food and I really like the older woman/wife who helped me as well. Honestly, I won't be returning to Kens - never have I ever had an issue with a place for letting me create my own type of Italian. The only reason why I gave three stars - is because I love the food and his wife was a sweetheart who tried to calm him down. Honestly, would love to give 1 star based on what had happened. I'm still not understanding how he was THAT upset about my unique Italian haha. Shame on you man! read more

I only moved to this area 4 years ago and have been trying to find a spot as my go to. I actually starting going to Ken's bc of my work. They order from there all of the time. The owner/staff are always kind and accommodating to all the food allergies and preferences. I go to this place often now and reading some of the reviews I wonder if we are going to the same place. They ARE open on Saturdays (barring a random day they may need to close as they are a family run business). I have always had great service and I've even gotten my picky husband on board. The same people are running Ken's every day that were running it twenty years ago. A little older, a little greyer, but still as friendly and as committed to giving you great food at good prices as always. Ken's is unassuming, unglamorous, unshiny, and everything I need out of a deli. I'm a man of habit and dedicated to their BLTs, but all their food is solid deli fare, never skimping, and always made of fresh ingredients. They have the best beverage selection in town, as well. It pains me to mention them in the same review, but look at all the polish and shine of Ronnie's down the block, and the extra money you pay for each sandwich for such ersatz glitz. At Ken's they just stick to the important things, value and satisfaction with a smile. I go to Marsala Hardware next door periodically and always keep ending up back in Ken's when I do, even when I'm not hungry. It's just so compelling -- they're there so willing to take care of me, so who am I to deny them? Nowhere to sit in Ken's, by the way, but the Veterans Park across the street is a fantastic place to pull up a bench for an impromptu picnic lunch. read more

I've been going to Ken's for maybe 12 years and I'm pretty sure I have been spoiled by them. It's been the same owners for all these years and that's what I love about this place. Service is friendly and quick. The breakfast sandwiches are delicious and they give a good amount of whatever you order, whether it is taylor ham, bacon or sausage. The deli sandwiches are also hands down, the best. They know the right ratio of meat, lettuce tomatoes onions etc, and cheese. I despise when places skimp out on the toppings and give way too much cold cuts. I usually order a Turkey BLT or an Italian with oil&vinegar on a round roll. read more
