New to massages, Crystal Cove is somehow the third massage I've been to in the span of a year, thanks to Groupon. It seems they've recently opened, as the facilities look new and clean (it changes a little bit when you wander into the back and the rooms; I don't recommend needing to use the bathroom here). To my luck, they accommodated us an hour earlier than scheduled. The rooms are dark with small beds and soft blankets. The furniture and wall decorations are dated, and the rooms for different clients are separated by a fabric sheet. Not the best, but I'm glad we were the only ones here at the time of booking. During my massage, I felt that my masseuse did a lot of same stuff. I got my elbows and forearm worked on a lot, which was cool but not necessarily what I wanted. There was a language barrier so I couldn't really say anything. I was surprised to receive hot stones resting on my back at some point, which turned into a hot stone rub. They then put oil everywhere - like, EVERYWHERE. The Chinese massage oil was mild, almost diluted with no real smell, but I preferred the lack of potency. Despite the language barrier, I did feel comfortable throughout the massage - out of my first three massages, this was the least painful and ticklish. My fingers and toes also got cracked. The background noise was piano music over water with constant chirping sounds which became rather annoying. The result of this massage was great, though it was more of a relaxing great than a massage that fixed problem areas. I had gone on a hike right before the massage, and the massage made me feel much looser and better. At the end, they offer you lemon flavored water and candy, and request for your tip. I do wish they didn't watch you as you put in the tip, as that pressure feels unnerving. While I enjoyed the massage, I wish I had gotten results with more impact, and also prefer better facilities. read more

Oh my goodness, this might be the most painful, but rewarding massages I've ever had. When they asked what strength level I wanted, I told them i wanted it HARD--and boy did my masseuse deliver. I told her I had shoulder pain and she immediately felt that my shoulders were tight. She made sure to pay extra care and attention to them and to remove all those stubborn knots. I felt well taken care of and was impressed with her over all strength. Only reason I'm docking one star is that my appointment started 30 minutes after the reserved time. This was not too big of a deal, but just a minor inconvenience. Be sure to give yourself buffer time if you have plans afterwards. Came back. This time massage was not so great. It was a lot of pushing down on my body applying pressure rather than massaging the muscles. Front end asked how massage was. I said great but it was not great. I didn't think there was any point in saying bad because I doubt they would offer to take us back into the room for another 1 hour massage or give a free massage another time. When we were about to leave she pointed out that they have a chart for tipping. If you have a 60 minute massage they request you tip $15, $20, or more. I never asked to see the tipping chart. Just like any other business in California I feel the tips are not optional...more so forced. On my way out I was asked how much I'd like to tip.. i said $10. Arrived on time for a couples massage. A man greeted us and checked us in. There was a heavy language barrier as he didn't really speak English. He walked us directly to the back of the business and pointed to the bathrooms. My wife and I were confused and tried to tell him we didn't have to use the bathroom. He then walked us to the massage room. Both my wife and I had the same experience with our Swedish massage. It felt rushed. There was no calming rhythm or transitions. Both of masseuses walked on our backs and legs which was awkward for a Swedish massage. My masseuse left 5 times and one was to take care of a customer who walked in for their appointment. At least she apologized for taking care of the other customer. My masseuse left my legs open to air so it was cold when she wasn't massaging that area. The whole experience was just weird and didn't feel relaxed at all. I wouldn't recommend this place for any newcomers. It's okay-ish. I'd give 2.5 to 3 stars except our last visit was worse than the usual. The spa facilities are sex segregated and there's no common area for cis-couples to see each other prior to the treatment. Each side has hot and cold pools, a steam room and a dry sauna. It can get kind of crowded depending on time of day and there are times when either soap, shampoo or lotion bottles are empty in the locker/spa areas. *As others have said, no slippers allowed and clothing is optional in the spa area, but underwear is required during treatment.* You're also called for your service by your locker number rather than name; I'm not sure what to make of that other than they may have issues with language barriers. The therapists are hit and miss- both my wife and I have had good masseuses but both of us have also had rushed treatments where they just rub at knots at different speeds. For people with sensitive skin like my wife it can get uncomfortable quickly. We have had excellent thai massages there- must give credit for that even if it was a few years back. *Important bit: You pay for the service before entering the spa and afterwards tips are cash only and they provide an ATM near the front desk. TLDR- it's not The Sense at Rosewood or even Water Courseway but you may find value in it. Good for solo people looking to soak/steam. Treatments are hit or miss. read more
