When our ten-year old A/C decided to stop working I asked neighbors for recs and poked around on the web. Hmmm, this one's rated five stars with thirty positive reviews. Worth a shot, so I called and left a message (after hours). Got a return call this morning and their guy showed up today, right on time. I pointed the very nice fella to the outdoor unit and checked on him a few minutes later. I was expecting the worst. He had removed the giant capacitor and was about to hook up a new one to see if it would do the trick. Sure enough, it did! And the unit was about 25% as loud as before! The tech explained everything, answered all my questions, checked for refrigerant leaks, and declared the unit healthy. He then did a check-up on the heating unit, replaced the filter I had kinda let go, and fully explained the whole house ventilation system. All of this in one hour, folks! I couldn't have been happier. This guy was polite, professional, knowledgeable, friendly, efficient, and even had a sense of humor! My heat pump didn't blow hot air recently and I called a local HVAC company (one of the big names) to do a diagnosis and hopefully a repair. The technician basically quoted prices from their menu to find and maybe replace parts that seemed outrageously high (around $4,000), then tried to sell me a new system. I called Randy, he came out the next day and quickly diagnosed the problem, got it fixed, the heat pump and furnace worked again. Faceplate went blank on my programmable thermostat. I spoke to Randy asking for an appointment but when I explained my issue he was able to diagnose two problems with my system over the phone and walk me through the repairs (both were pretty minor but not for the uninitiated). Randy did this without asking for payment, and without acting put out or bothered. This was just good service and now I'm a loyal customer. Be aware, they are a 2-man operation and it's currently summer so they're pretty busy. That said, these guys are worth waiting for if you need service. I called Crystal Air for a second opinion & I'm sooooo glad I did! We are first time homeowners, and a different furnace repair company had come and looked at our furnace and said it'd be over $1,000 to fix, may need other parts after that, and who knows maybe we'd need a whole new furnace since they said our 10yr old Trane furnace had not been maintained well. Brian is the owner of Crystal Air Systems and he texted me back on a Sunday eve & I sent him some photos of model & serial # and the furnace and he came over that next day Monday to help us. His diagnosis was it probably needed 1 part, and did need to be adjusted (in a techie way I will explain below). He did the adjustment then & there so we could safely & reliably run our heat in the short term (rather than leave it off and be cold like the other company had said), then ordered the part. He came back the next morning Tuesday to put in the part and VOILA! a perfectly functioning furnace. Total bill (parts & labor) just under $200. Naturally we are now lifetime customers of Crystal Air Systems for our furnace needs. Brian doesn't want me to talk ill of other companies (which is nice of him) so I will but in the other review. :-) Crystal Air Systems does pricing by parts cost plus hourly labor cost which I like because it's very transparent & straightforward. Also he doesn't delay w/getting the parts you need. He got the Trane supplier in Lacey to get in our part the next day & brought it right over. While working, Brian was friendly & taught me & my husband things about our furnace which is great because we wanted to learn. OK so now for some techie details (optional reading) I believe are correct because I just learned them from Brian but I'm new to this. We have a dual stage furnace made by Trane. (Dual stage furnaces are not recommended by Brian because he says the replacement parts are more and it's mostly just marketing hype once you factor in the higher parts costs over its lifetime. But he can service them fine so good enough for me.) The adjustment Brian made during his first visit was that he found that the furnace was supplying too much gas when it kicked into it's high (fire) heat mode, which might have stressed the thermal limit switch that needed replacing. He used an old-school (non-digital) manometer to measure gas pressure & air pressure because he says that the digital ones need to be calibrated so he can be sure his is always accurate. The other tech from the other company had thought our inducer needed replacing (a costly part) but Brian's diagnosis said it was fine. I definitely got the impression that Brian was a Furnace Super-Geek so I trust his assessment, plus our furnace has been great in the 8 days since his visit. 5 Stars for professionalism and integrity. My heat pump went out recently and I called a local HVAC company (one of the big names) to do a diagnosis and hopefully a repair. The technician basically tried to sell me a new system and quoted prices from their menu to replace six parts that seemed outrageously high (around $1,600); he still charged me $79 just for this diagnosis. I called Randy to get a second opinion. Randy quickly diagnosed the problem, replaced a part for $10 and fixed several wire connectors and got my heat pump running to specifications; total cost for the repair was $165! Moral to this story: if you need service for your HVAC/Heat Pump, call Randy and don't bother with the "big guys" as they are unscrupulous (at least in my encounter with them). Crystal Air of Olympia is definitely my go-to business for furnace/HVAC repair. Brian is DA BOMB! On his first visit last year, he spent a couple of hours diagnosing my problem, ended up replacing the control board and/or the pressure switch, and only charged me for the switch itself, not his time. Today, I called him because the fault indicator again said it was a faulty PS (he indicated that a bad board will often default to reporting a bad switch), and over the phone he suggested removing the hose from the switch, blowing thru it to remove any dust or gunk that may have prevented vacuum from getting to the switch, and reconnecting it. Son of a gun if that didn't seem to fix the problem...the furnace started up normally, and appears to be working now. So, when it comes time to replace my furnace (and that time may be soon), Crystal Air and Brian are going to be the folks I call to get that done. After getting the scare tactic from another furnace servicing business, I asked for a second opinion from Randy at Crystal Air. The business that came out previously wrote that the motor was leaking and that a heat exchanger had a crack in it. According to that company, the ultimate solution was to get a new furnace. Randy came out after normal business hours and checked out the furnace. He looked at the motor and it was not leaking oil - it was dry as a bone. He looked at the heat exchangers and there were no cracks in them. He showed me both of his findings. I appreciate that he came out after hours and took the time to show me that there was no damage at all. I woke up this morning (Sunday around 7:00 am ) with it 57 degrees in the house and our furnace running non-stop set to 64. My wife and I just bought this home in June and the previous owner had Crystal Air Systems come out and do an inspection/general service. We were told there was a warranty on the system for 12 months through Crystal Air so that is who I called. I called them at 7:41 am and left a message expecting a call tomorrow during the business week. To my surprise at 7:54 am Brian returned my call, asked a few questions, and then unfortunately informed me there was no warranty as he just provided a general service on the system. He said he was on his way to buy some milk and would bring his work van instead of his personal vehicle and wouldn't mind stopping by. Well, being that I just lost my job due to the extreme slow down in my industry...I was dreading what the cost of a weekend visit would cost. Brian showed up around 8:30 am, and was very informative through the visit. He didn't mind that I stood over his shoulder asking questions, in fact he joked and said he'd make a service tech out of me yet. He found the igniter switch to be out after testing a number of other things. The screw for ours was rusted and Brian had to take apart parts of our exhaust to get to it...and then it was with some engineering ingenuity that he was able to get the screw holding it down out. He had the part in his van (generic brand) and switched it out. Within moments the furnace fired up. Brian tested the air flow, CO levels, and made sure everything was in good working order. It took him about 30 minutes to do all of this. The cost: NOTHING! Brian told me that he understands someone going through hard times and he didn't mind helping me out since he was able to today. Thank God for Brian, and thank you very much Brian for your time and help. Brian is extremely knowledgeable, trustworthy, and a true professional craftsman in his industry.
