It's a very fun way to get in shape and meet people. The gym is clean and safe. I'd definitely recommend going? PLUS: there is a cool food truck area attached to the parking lot so you can go eat or get a coffee then get back to climbing. read more

We have been wanting to go rock climbing with the kids for a while and finally did! We did family waivers ahead of time and my wife had to do hers separate because she couldn't be added to family waiver because only one person over 18 on it. That caused a bit of confusion but we worked it out. But the cost for our family of five wasn't bad at all. We have a 5 yr, 9yr and 11yr old and had a blast! There were about five or six climbs that they all could do attached to the rope so they could belay down. Then there were some free fall climb areas that they also thought was fun. Then when my oldest was done climbing, we played some ping pong and he played the piano that they have there. So we easily spent a couple of hours there and will definitely be back! They also have an enclosed kids area for parties that looked cute. Highly recommend for some safe family fun! read more

Crux is a gem within Austin, and I have been a member here for over three years. I've been climbing around various Austin gyms since 2018 and each gym sort of has its own culture and vibe. After being at Crux for so long, it has stood out as having one of the most authentic communities in the city. I have built lifelong friends through the various fitness and yoga classes offered here and I think it's arguably one of the biggest bang-for-the-buck memberships around considering it includes climbing, open gym(s), multiple locations, and top-notch fitness and yoga classes. The gym has also started scheduling unique fitness and lifestyle workshops on the weekend and I've found these to be expansive to my overall fitness and health journey. (+ shoutout to Audrey, the fitness class coordinator, she's the best!) read more

Came here as a plus one and loved it!! The staff did an orientation/tour so I would know all the basic rules and how things worked and they were so helpful and knowledgeable!! I liked that there was also rope climbing and bouldering so there were plenty of options for everyone!! I was nervous about going at first bc I hadn't climbed in a long time but they have a good amount of beginner friendly courses and we had so much fun!! read more

I've been a member here for a few years now, and I have to say this local gym is quite the gem here in Austin! They offer all sorts of perks for members and don't try to nickle and dime for everything. Their rates are reasonable and include a LOT of perks. Climbing isn't even my biggest focus here. I climb casually every now and then. What I really come for is the yoga. They have some amazing instructors with different styles, and some of them have really helped my gain back my fitness confidence after a serious knee surgery. Their fitness barn has roots of great equipment and everything is well maintained and cared for. I really appreciate everything the team does here to keep things organized. Love this gym! read more

Crux has the Best climbs in ATX Other gyms seem to have a very hard time with grading their climbs. ABP seems to have abandoned their color wheel grading system entirely as you will find pink V0s, white V2s or blue V8s etc. You just never know what your going to be climbing. Mesa rim has the same issue. I recently got on a route that was labeled 5.12b and it had a V10+ section. I laughed when I overheard another climber saying the route was easily 5.13+. Kind of impressive to miss the mark that much with a grade. Crux seems to be the most accurate with grades while also creating really cool, unique movements that you just don't see as much at the competitors locations. read more

Great gym, friendly climbers and staff who helped me with purchasing my own equipment. I am a beginner so I learn alot about technique just from watching some of the advanced climbers at the gym. They have routes for all levels so don't worry if you are just starting out. There is also a gym that is great for supplementing some of your weak spots in strength. read more

Still enjoy climbing here! You make reservations to come on the RGPro app, check in with a barcode tag, get your temperature checked and head on in. If you check in with your phone number too, you can rack up points. Luckily if the top rope area gets too crowded, you can walk around to an area less packed - bouldering, head to the cave, or upstairs moon board. Usually don't have that problem after 8:30ish PM or very early morning. read more

Great gym! Definitely ove the routes that are set up here, esp. in the cave. They're pretty challenging, although I do have to say that they've been feeling a bit easier recently.. but they're still fun. I really love how the bouldering gym is set up and how they also offer fitness and yoga classes. I would recommend getting a membership or at least checking out this climbing gym as well as their other location that's in central Austin! read more

This place has lots of bouldering problems. They are challenging. Though it may be a bit small and feels kinda crowded. The rope section is very small as it only has a small section. The walls are not that tall and this could not be challenging for the lead climbing. I enjoyed the bouldering problems, but I believe that ABP is much better place to go for bouldering than Crux Climbing Center... read more

This is a pretty good climbing center with decent fitness equipment/facilities. I have been climbing/training there multiple times per week for the better part of 2 years now. I learned how to top rope and lead climb there. I've got some good memories there. It's been mostly good, but during the summer months the place seemingly turns into a daycare center for small children watched over by one or two 20-somethings. It creates a safety hazard with children that aren't old enough for a well-developed sense of self-preservation (think ages 5-9) running around under overhung routes where they can easily be crushed by a falling climber, I have seen these close calls happen at this gym myself. One might say "just go where the kids aren't." Crux is a small gym. Another rebuttal one might have to this is, "Go in the afternoons/evenings after the daycare/camp is closed." Crux shares a parking lot with one of the most popular coffee / beer gardens in Austin, if you aren't going in the mornings or early afternoons you're gonna get boxed out by Cosmic Coffee patrons and you can bet on not finding any parking within 150 yds of the place. Especially in the warmer months. This place has some goods, but the bads can leave a sour taste. The fall/winter months and the odd cold day when Cosmic isn't crowded are the times when this place really shines. read more

Crux offers a good variety of climbing walls. The facility is well maintained and staff are knowledgable and friendly. It can get crowded, especially during peak times and parking can be a challenge. read more

Crux Climbing Center - Climbing and yoga! - Rock Climbing Near Me - Austin, Texas

My husband and his friend recently really got into rock climbing. We have checked out both climbing gyms in the area, but Crux was closer to home so we had to go with this one. In all honesty, I liked the other one way more. The vibe was different there, more of a camaraderie. Their levels also made more sense than they do here with the animals. Crux does have some positives and I will try to list them here: They have the option to rope climb, a full gym, yoga, and a climbing cave. We are also a little peeved that they have raised the monthly cost $20 to $95, which I feel is a bit of a rip off. My husband has loved working here since he works from home and can also go next door to Cosmic Coffee, but the new prices are outrageous. read more

The gym is nice. The staff on the other hand is rude, not helpful, and certainly not welcoming to new climbers. Upon my entering of the gym when greeting them I get no reciprocation, when asking for equipment on my membership they look annoying and very aggressive. Another things that varies from person to person is the price. For me it's absurd, I'm paying $100 dollars a month just for additional equipment. Before hand it was $75 dollars but that's without equipment and at that price it's most definitely not worth it for what you get. Overall I believe there are better climbing gym in austin with more reasonable prices and a staff that is not stuck up. read more

Crux is amazing! My girlfriend and I had been climbing a little over a year when we first visited. We ended up taking a lead climbing class. The instructor was awesome and we got certified the next day. There's lots to do here. They have a slab wall, auto belay, top roping, lead climbing, bouldering, a cave, and a training area with campus, hang, and moon boards. It's a great place to go to train, or to just have a good time with friends who may be new to climbing. My favorite spot is the cave. It's exhausts your core and quickly becomes a great full body workout. Getting some of the V3s/V4s in there will impress most friends and family... until you watch the next person climb that V9 that looked impossible. And when I'm writing this, the membership also gives you access to the Boulder only location in central Austin, which is also a lot of fun. read more

Modern rock climbing place that is suitable for first-timers to experts. However, you need to become certified with Crux through classes to belay other people (some places allow you to belay after intro orientation). They provide climbing shoes and cubbies for storage. The physical walls have about 4-5 self-belaying climbs that are not too difficult. If you go during peak time, you might wait for a climb to open up. There is a large free climbing area with an abundance of space. Also, there is a separate kids area with easy walls to climb. Around the back there is a ping pong table, piano, lounge area and bathrooms. For $20, you can climb all day, but unless you are certified you might get bored quickly. The reason Crux gets 5 instead of 4 stars is because of the shoes, modern facility, and number of climbs offered. The facility shares a parking lot with a food truck park and beer & coffee bar. read more

I should've posted a review long ago, but after a small mix up on my membership I'm even more inclined to let everyone know how amazing Crux is, especially their (kind & caring) employees. I joined Crux gym over a year ago, and my heart aches not being able to have my (3x a week) sessions (personal choice) but I'm glad to know they'll be there when I'm ready to get back on the wall. Their route setters are GOOD. They get you thinking, also give easier lines that boost confidence, and also set routes that you'll literally dream about solving. That says a lot about their route setting skills! I've brought two beginners to crux and they were able to try and conquer plenty of lines, so they're great for all levels. The vibe, the amenities, their gear shop, I give it all 5+ stars. read more

Very nice gym. Good problems. The issue (and why I gave it three stars) is: 1. The staff was not very customer oriented. Meaning, no one smiled, no one at the front desk used my name, welcomed us (since we are out of towners and never climbed there). All the little customer experienced nuances go a long way. The staff should all take a Dale Carnegie class to learn how to wow customers with the little things. 2. There's a LOT of boulders, and a small section of top-rope (and it was odd that lead-climbs intersected with auto-belay routes). If they added just one more wall of too-rope I think it would feel much more balanced. When we were there (and maybe it was a coincidence) there were a lot of climbers, and well over half were on the top-ropes and tons of the boulders were empty and not being climbed. We had to wait in-line to top-rope or use auto-belays. Adding another wall (maybe lead-only and then changing the existing area to top-rope only and adding a few more auto-belays) would be a good fit. 3. The last thing (and this happens at almost all gyms) is that when you leave, no one ever says goodbye and thanks you for coming! It's so simple, but it makes you feel welcomed and seen by the gym. Can you imagine going into any other service based business (like a restaurant or a dry-cleaner) and afternoon eating or picking up your clothes, no one says a word to you? The staff simply needs a system. 1. Welcome everyone and use their name as many times as possible. 2. Smile while doing it! (When you smile, the other person reciprocates and it realizes endorphins into the brain and creates the "feel good" sensation). 3. Ask them what they are interested in (top rope, lead, boulders, fitness, or just checking out climbing). I came with my 6 year old and they didn't even mention they had a kids area. 4. Sign the waiver and ADD to the waiver WHY they made the choice to come climbing. This can Be marketing gold if You ask the right questions and then follow up correctly in step 10). Get them geared up and demo safety procedures. 5. Reiterate the staffers name, and that if they need anything, don't hesitate to ask and tell them we want to solve any problems or help with anything they need. Smile when saying it and use the customers name. 6. Come back within 10 minutes and make sure they don't have any follow up questions. Use their name. Smile. 7. Tell them before they leave to come get a little gift you have at the front desk. 8. Surprise them with a second visit (fill in the blank. Something like half off, or a credit towards a membership with what they paid that day, or something cool to encourage them to come back). 9. Direct them to an easy anonymous way to review you and give suggestions and tell them that our REAL customers matter (whether that's mostly legit climbers or casuals, and don't think it's one when it's really the other). 10. Ask if you can contact them by email or cell to follow up later with reminders to come back and WHY they should (fitness, fun, getting out of the house etc). Lastly, the biggest missing component of climbing gyms is the gaming approach. There's no encouragement from the gym to "level up." Climb your first 5.10? You get excited and no one else does. The staff should always be encouraging and incentivizing you to do more which keeps you coming back. Oh, and do Insta-Beta. Route setters should set the route, then climb it on video, and give the climb a name and a date, and add it to their Instagram page as "insta-beta123" etc. that way, when people get stuck, they can see how it's climbed. They will also then be encounter to follow you on social, and share when they climb it. read more

A great place for the whole family... Whether you are a novice or pro Crux is a lot of fun. They have a dedicated kids area, dedicated bouldering cave and separate roped climbing section also. The staff here is very informative and helpful. I have gone to this location i believe a total of 3 times so far and all the times I've visited it has been fun. Tons of options from bouldering to belaying/top roping. Also they have several routes for lead climbing and most of their routes are labeled clearly. They have a section to top out on for bouldering and they also have a cave. The facility stays pretty clean and they have a weight training/lounge area upstairs. CRUX has tons of classes, offers and packages. This really is an all inclusive gym and the rates are not bad. I will definitely be going back i might even get a membership. See ya there. read more

While the climbing floor is clean, the staff at Crux Climbing Center is incompetent. As a More Awesome member, I was encouraged to be a part of the Crux private after-hour climbing Facebook page in order to find other More Awesome members to climb with. It took me twisting the staff members' arms in order to be added to that page. The same happened when I try to cancel my membership. They are not prompt with returning emails and are rather curt on the phone. I will be taking my business to Austin Bouldering Project which has a kinder, more helpful staff and better membership rates. read more

We love the space here! A great workout and we always meet nice, friendly and helpful people!

Had a pretty poor experience here for my first visit. I paid for two day passes and when I requested for a top rope belay test at 630pm (shortly after orientation), they told me "they might be able to get us in today" (gym closes at 10pm). I have never been to a gym where it took more than 15 minutes to get tested, much less a gym that wouldn't guarantee a test in the next 3.5 hours. The front desk said they had to prioritize manning the front desk and employee breaks so perhaps it's a management-level issue with staffing but I will say that their were four folks at the front desk and they were just sitting around chatting. Wish we had gone to Austin bouldering project during our short stay in Austin. If you're short on time, I recommend skipping this gym and hitting up ABP. I will say the setting wasn't terrible, they had some fun angles, and they had a nice lounge area. read more

This place is remarkable. I first went with my kiddo on a rainy day not knowing what else to do, and ended up becoming a member. They really know how to put together a great community. The place is clean and always changing to keep it interesting. There is great food across the street. We have all had to deal with new policies in the world over more than the past year, but these folks have been on point with their handling of a global pandemic. There is trust and respect abound. I have never felt more supported by any community. From the front desk to the awesome yoga teachers, to the management, if you show up regularly, you will feel so welcomed even if you are not a super star climber. Crux you will forever have such a special place in my heart. Thanks a billion for being my world class rock!!! read more

I am reviewing this gym as a gym, not as a rock climbing center. I'm not a rock climber; I exclusively belonged to this gym because of it's in immediate proximity to my house for weights, machines, and yoga. Also, as you read my thoughts, let it be known that I am not a "bougey gym" guy. If I lived closer, my gym would hands down be the simple, elegant beauty that is the rustic Hyde Park Gym. For starters, the place smells horrible. Upon entering you will be greeted to an unavoidable warm hug of BO and foot odor. This has been the case throughout the summer and fall, every single day I've entered inside. I've never been to a gym that smelled so nauseating. Most of their nine (highly out of date) aerobic machines are in disrepair. They are covered in dust and seem to be actively falling apart when used, as if they were picked up off a deceased estate sale. Most of the other members that use the gym seem to markedly lack social skills. I've had to ask grown adults to stop climbing above me on the very squat rack that I'm actively using. I've been a member at very marginal Planet Fitness', Gold's, and 24 hour fitness' and the people using the gym here are some of the most uninspiring, socially inept, disrespectful human beings to equipment and to other members' personal space. The employees never recognize you as a human being. They're not rude, just always seemingly occupied with something else. For $70+ a month, you'd expect at least a hello upon entering, maybe? So why 2 stars? Well, the yoga classes are actually good, taught by teachers who seem to genuinely care about delivering a quality experience. Sadly every class was partially filled with people who would talk amongst themselves and clearly were not familiar with basic decorum. I kept coming here hoping that these problems would be fixed. They were not. I guess most people here don't use this gym as a gym, and more as a place to hang out and climb. I'm not in that category and look forward to my next gym. read more

Crux has only officially been open for 1 day, but it's very clear that this is a world class indoor rock climbing facility with some seriously passionate owners. For opening day they had a route setting competition, a (free entry) bouldering competition capped at 150 entrants with cash prizes to the top competitors, free beer, a week of climbing related giveaways, and various other festivities and competitions to celebrate their long anticipated opening. The building itself looks very sleek and modern and is clearly designed well and is very conducive to socialization as well as climbing, with hammocks by the entrance, and ample seating both on the climbing floor and one the 2nd level where you can get a great view of their competition wall or just relax after a day of climbing. There's a nice sized lobby at the entrance selling climbing essentials like chalk, chalk bags, shoes, shirts, etc... and the main bouldering area beyond that features a large area with some challenging climbing angles, and the walls themselves are more on the slick side than the few other places I've climbed. There's also a large 24 hour climbing cave for bouldering which provides a good space for roof climbing and even more tough angles, and even a clear climbing wall within the cave that faces the interior of the facility. In addition to the main bouldering area, and large cave, they have a uniquely modifiable "future wall" for general bouldering and which will be and has already been used for competitions and can be altered for various levels of difficulty and fresh terrain periodically. Crux also has a good sized area in the back for top rope climbing with 30 foot walls, lead climbing as well as a few auto belay machines, which is awesome for those who want to climb top rope problems without a partner. Upstairs they have a gym area, with campus board and other essentials, and Crux offers yoga classes as well as a separate children's play area, and they'e got a plethora of membership options as well as day passes and punch cards no matter how frequently or infrequently you plan to climb. Problems (climbing routes) here are divided into 6 colors with each color representing 2 V-grades range of difficulty. i.e. v0-v1, v2-v3, v4-v5 and so on. I found it pretty easy and clear to differentiate holds for separate problems and it's much nicer than following tape strips on the walls. Austin is lucky to have the addition of Crux to it's climbing options and they definitely offer some unique features packed into a state of the art facility. Definitely worth checking out! read more

I LOVED this place. I've been to a few other bouldering gyms and honestly this one might be my favorite? The routes were fantastic, challenging and strenuous, I got in a great workout (which is good because I skipped my morning crossfit WOD to try this place and am not mad I did!). I was especially empressed by the bouldering cave and the weight room upstairs and I really hope I can return for a yoga class because the view from the yoga room looked super chill. Went to crux for the first time on a Saturday in July at 3 pm. Was welcomed in and shown around the beautiful space by a lovely staff member whose name alludes me although I believe it began with a C. Asked if we could test for our top rope certificate and were put on a wait-list. Been a while since we top roped and the equipment was new to us. Once the test began it was clear we were lost and should have been flunked. Instead the instructor decided to ostracize us for our lack of knowledge. He told us we needed more practice and made the interaction more awkward than it had to be for everyone. His name alludes me aswell although it began with an A. Bouldering facilities are nice but hot during the summer. Unless your dead set on big walls don't go hear and instead go bouldering somewhere else or go climbing at the greenbelt.
