I turned 59 last year and decided to get serious about getting strong and building better health for myself. So, I went and checked out several gyms that were really close to me. I met with Dylan at CrossFit Austin and I instantly knew he was the perfect Personal Trainer for me, and that he would help me accomplish my goals. I've now been working with Dylan a couple times a week for almost a year. I can't believe how strong and physically confident I've become working with Dylan. My body can now do things I would have never imagined it could do. He has helped me gain new strength after being diagnosed with Osteoporosis a few years ago, and has been helping me rebuild my health from a year of breast cancer treatments in 2017. I feel sure that when I am next tested for the Osteoporosis it will show that I've gained new bone since the last test.. I am confident that the strength training I've been doing with Dylan is the best thing I could be doing for my body and my health. I told Dylan when we started that I wanted to be a woman that could get up and down off the floor with ease at 90. I know that I will be that woman because I now know what my body is capable of when I exercise it properly and regularly. I feel great, I have more energy, I look young and fit, and I know that I'm a strong and healthy 60 year young woman. I can not recommend Dylan and CrossFit Austin enough. I have been involved with CrossFit for 4 years now. As both a coach and an athlete. I have been to multiple gyms across the country as I travel far and wide with my job. I've seen the good, bad, and ugly. Everything about CFA is top notch. You actually warm up here. You don't just do 10 cleans to get ready for a workout with 1000 cleans in it. You go into every workout and lift feeling prepared mentally and physically. I always felt like the programming was set with a direction and a goal towards a lift or workout. There are multiple for classes ranging from mobility, Olympic lifting, CrossFit, Hyrox, and even classes for soon to be mothers. I have very rarely ever seen that type of diversity in a gym throughout the whole country. The gym is organized. Everything has a spot. I've been to gyms where everything was just tossed in the corner, but that is not the case here. All the coaches are knowledgeable and helpful to every person regardless of their ability. The members are all welcoming. There is no ego in this gym and that's what I have loved about CFA. There are meet ups outside of the gym. It's meant to be a community. CFA is all the good things you'd want out of a CrossFit gym. It is truly a special place and I'd recommend this gym to anyone who is in the Austin area. read more

Like pain? Sign up. I'm not joking. Crossfit hurts. You will lay in bed wondering what you did to deserve this type of punishment, self- subjected nonetheless. I started at Crossfit ATM in Aggieland many moons ago, but now that I'm in Austin more consistently, I had my trainer, Dutch, recommend a place in Austin. I couldn't find any for CrossfitAustin on you tube. The ones that come up are actually mislabeled. Anyways, I was a runner and skater doing weight training 3-5 times week before I started Crossfit. I thought I was in good shape. That was just a thought. Crossfit will get you into way better shape fast. Every workout consists of different moves that are done at a fast pace. It is rare that you will repeat the exact same drill two days in a row, which is great if you get bored easily. You can find pretty detailed information about Crossfit on the interwebs, so you don't need me to be telling you about it. Crossfit Austin also offers classes early mornings and afternoons to accommodate your scheduling needs. I prefer to go early in the mornings (6:30 am) while it is still cool, and I don't have to mess with traffic. Wes and Boone both have quite a bit of patience, because well, I'm not all that coordinated. Bottom line is: It is effective, but it isn't easy. You will gain the respect of your peers when they see "#%Y!(#*@^$ Crossfit kicked my ass today!" on your Facebook status. Do it. You know you want to. All the in-shape kids are doing it. *First trial workout is free. * Discounts for military, fireman, law enforcement officers, first responders, students, and certified Texas educators. This is one of the few times I'm happy to be a grad student. *You are likely to get blisters from doing pull ups. *I can almost dead lift my body weight. That's right. My girlfriend now assists with coaching at Crossfit Austin. She has been going here for almost a year and loves it. This weekend, I joined her for the Saturday morning workout. It was the first time I got to see the inside of her gym. The gym was pretty nice. The gym had plenty of equipment and everything was organized very well. My favorite part was the awesome rubber floor that they have. You don't even need to have yoga mats, the rubber floor takes care of it. It made certain exercises lot easier because your feet weren't sliding around. Also, the coaches are awesome. Wes, Boone, and Tristy are real nice, knowledgeable, and seem to be good motivators (although only Wes and Tristy were there on Saturday). read more

I can't begin to tell you how CrossFit Austin has changed my life. Boone, Wes, Tristy and the trainers at CFA will take you from any fitness level and help you accomplish getting stronger or losing weight or whatever your goal is. There is no pretentious attitude, everyone is welcoming, helpful, and supportive. This is a family atmosphere, all while getting one hell of a workout. You will leave the gum challenged and dripping wet. If CrossFit isn't enough, you can do Olympic weightlifting classes with Chad Vaughn, who is an Olympic lifter and super rad guy. When I first tried out CFA, I had no confidence in lifting any weight more than 5 lbs in each hand. A week ago I lifted 100 lbs over my head in a clean and jerk. My arms have never been so toned. I just ran a mile in 7:03, and before crossfit, it was 10:35. I've improved so much physically and mentally because of this gym and it's coaches. All the coaches give you that one-on-one idividualized help at any time. They are motivating and they care. I feel like when my husband and I joined, we also gained a family. My husband has lost 55 lbs since the start (8 months ago), and we lead completely healthy lives now. CFA has also made me super interested in paleo nutrition. It seems like the more research I do, the more I see the Paleo diet being the very BEST diet for humans. The gym members also join up for pub runs or just hanging out. It says a lot about the business when several of the members show up on a Saturday and volunteer to paint or work on the gym. What other business would have their clients actually want to help fix up the place without getting paid? That says a lot to me. After moving to Austin from Michigan, it is hard not to get into some type of exercise here. From running to kayaking to rowing to biking to yoga to ballet classes, this city has it all. Literally. I'm pretty short and have very short legs that have never really let me travel far. And when I say travel far, I mean run very fast. I'm more of a fast walker / jogger. So I was doing that on and off for a year or so. I still enjoy doing that, but mostly reserve that for walks with my dog on the weekends or late at night. I had joined Lifetime when I first moved here, but that only lasted 6 months because I'm not a very big gym person. I loved their hot yoga class, but couldn't justify spending $75/month for a couple hot yoga classes a week. I started talking to my friends and heard Crossfit mentioned a lot. So I decided to give Crossfit a try. My only regret? Not trying this sooner. Who loves waking up at 4:30am on a MONDAY (or any day during the week) and actually looks forward to going to WORKOUT?! THIS GIRL! And it's all thanks to Crossfit! I've never had a place where I felt like my goals were in tune with what the trainers are trying to help you with. I thought I would feel a little intimidated at first, but that was completely the opposite of how I felt. I felt comfortable. Welcomed. At ease. The trainers I've worked with so far are Erica and Boone and they are amazing rockstars. I can't wait to finish my foundations classes and move on to some more difficult stuff. I'm finally excited about an fitness plan for the first time in my life and cannot wait to see results. You can just drop into a class if you want to, but I highly recommend coming in to do an evaluation first. It's free and they really tune a program specifically to you. Then you have to take 6 foundations classes to learn the basics and build up your strength. After that, you can "graduate" to the tougher classes to become a real badass. Note: they play amazing music to workout to: 2Pac, Biggie, Ludacris. It's amazing and really makes you want to pump up your workout a notch. read more

So....it's 2016 and I'm still a fan. Yes, I still coach here (though, maybe only 5 times in the last year, does that still count?). I still workout here. AND, I still love it. Everything I've ever said I still believe. CFA moved to a 8000+sq ft place some time ago and it's been awesome to be a part of this community. Still going strong, and the sense of community currently is at an all-time high. Fantastic knowledgeable staff (nope, not bragging on myself, but my co-workers), offering a variety of options from group classes, personal training, Olympic lifting, competitive training...A comprehensive intro program can get you started comfortably, and varied - but strategic - day-to-day programming will get you sustainable results. If you live in South Austin, you want to get involved with Crossfit, look no further. I signed up for Crossfit Austin's prep course at the beginning of the month and so far it has exceeded all my expectations. The coaches are great, all the members are very welcoming/encouraging and it's super close to my house. I couldn't really ask for more. Coach Ben is patient and makes sure we all understand the movements before he lets us get started. I've had several personal trainers, been involved in team sports, and he has been great so far. He really prioritizes position and form. I appreciate that especially since some of the reservations I had about crossfit before joining were related to safety/form. Even though the prep course is focused on he fundamentals I still feel like I'm walking away with a workout. I just signed up for their unlimited package so I'm looking forward to experiencing everything Crossfit Austin has to offer. I signed up for a boot camp that took place ina south Austin park years ago. I was the only one who signed up! Therefore it was a very intense training. It was the first time I'd ever thrown up from working out. But the trainer was amazing and I got a lot out of it. Interestingly, there was sort of a turf war between my "camp" [camp of one] and another one. So when I saw on the local news that there were going to make all boot camps taking place in parks register, then it made sense. That way, the city could collect taxes and there wouldn't be that awkward moment between the trainers of two camps competing for the same space. read more

I've been CrossFitting for three years and just joined CrossFit Austin about three months ago. I've had an awesome experience with both the people and the workouts. Things I like about CrossFit Austin: 1. The programming is right on. Every workout includes an extensive warm-up, a skills session that targets heavy lifting or tricky technique, and a WOD that varies from quick-and-dirty sub-5:00 to butt-kicking chippers. One of the best things about the workouts is that the coaches get me to do things I wouldn't do on my own: rolling out with a foam roller, working on mobility, practicing the kipping swing or ring dips... it just seems like there's a lot of thought given to creating balanced, healthy CrossFitters. 2. The people are super nice. I was instantly welcomed by the other people in my classes and felt like part of the family right out of the gate. This is hugely important because the CrossFit workouts are so challenging -- I always feel supported and encouraged... and that pushes me to try my best at the workouts. 3. The coaches are attentive and skilled. During the skills sessions, I get excellent cueing on technique and helpful encouragement. During the WODs, there's always lots of cheering and cueing from the coaches to keep us moving and pushing when fatigue sets in. 4. There's a real sense of community. I like that in addition to workouts, there are fun social opportunities, too. Happy Hours, Ladies' Night, special workshops... there are lots of chances to hang out with like-minded people. 5. The prices are comparable - the schedule is flexible. The monthly cost is right in line with other gyms, but the scheduling offers a huge advantage. As members, we just pick how many times per week we want to attend, and then we go to the classes that fit our schedule. THIS IS HUGE! I have to travel for work sometimes, so it's great to know I can switch up my days with no hassle. I've loved the CrossFit way since I started -- and CrossFit Austin has renewed my enthusiasm and inspires me to keep working at it. read more

I joined the CFA family a little more than a year ago, and it's probably one of the best decisions I've ever made! Please disregard the old reviews addressing bad coaching. Idk how things were back then, and not everyone can be a perfect coach, BUT currently we have some very knowledgeable coaches, who are continuously taking courses and getting certified on many aspects of fitness. Our programming is well thought out, and based on very concrete knowledge. You can ask the coaches why we are doing certain movements in certain ways and they will be able to give you a good reason. This gym has a great focus on form and safety, so unless you're naturally reckless, then there's close to no chance that you'll get hurt. This place is good for the soul! It has a great community, and I've greatly increased my mind power and the perception of my potential here. I'm more confident with who I am, though I'm not looking like a crossfit athlete or a model, just a regular girl with still a little chub chub to work off. Please, please, please! Give this place a try, I promise you won't regret it! The 5:30am class is especially awesome (that's the class I'm most familiar with), but I'm sure any other class is just as great! I know 5:30am sounds crazy, but it turns out to be something very doable. We have all kinds of people attending this class, teachers, doctors, students, etc. read more

I'm coming up on 7 months of working out at CrossFit Austin, and the short version is that I can unequivocally recommend this gym to anyone that is looking to make a positive change in their lives. All of the staff are friendly and enthusiastic about helping you improve regardless of where you are starting from and will push you that little bit farther when you need it or hold you back when they think you are pushing it too far too soon. The workouts are challenging, occasionally ridiculous, but always satisfying to finish. The only caveat that comes with my recommendation is I don't completely buy in to the "Paleo Diet" they recommend. A full explanation of my thoughts on that particular issue would take more words than I am willing to include in a yelp review, but, in short, decent dietary recommendations, questionable supporting science which, of course, can be said about most diets with a name. This review is specifically for David Henderson, the gymnastics coach at Crossfit Austin. David has a systematic, no-nonsense approach to coaching that I deeply appreciate. He spent years as a competitive gymnast and it shows in his ability to quickly isolate and correct flaws in your form. It's no exaggeration to say that I felt myself improve with every rep. 15 minutes into our session I was doing strict muscle ups and by the end he had greatly improved my handstand form. David is personable while still respectful of your time and uses memorable analogies to help you improve, both during and after coaching. Speaking of, his follow up was excellent. I received a detailed email that not only recapped our session, but outlined a workout plan for me to pursue on my own. If you're at all interested in gymnastics, even if you're a complete beginner like me, you owe it to yourself to go see Mr. Henderson for some incredible coaching. read more

We love Crossfit Austin. We love the space, equipment, and community. Our main CFA experience is with Erica C. who is an amazing coach. Her programming is stellar, her instruction is on point and she's a great support. In over a year of working with her, we've never been injured.. but we have been sore! She takes feedback very well and she has a natural intuition as to when to really push us so we can be the best and when to modify when something might be more than we can handle that day. We love love love working with Erica. I also wanted to give a shout-out to some other CFA staff who we've had a great experience with: Genevieve and Tim. We've mostly interacted with Genevieve when it comes to billing. Its been so easy. She's easy to get a hold of and very easy to interact with. Billing is always a kind of weird and uncomfortable topic but she takes all of the weirdness out of there. She's so nice! Although we've never worked directly with Tim, we see him there all the time and we feel he really contributes to the wonderful community feel that CFA has. The coaches at CrossFit Austin are extraordinarily generous. They have gone out of their way to make me feel welcome. They greet me when I walk through the doors, encourage me when I start to falter, correct my form to keep me safe, keep me going when I don't think I can go anymore, and make sure to tell me when they think I have done a good job. Before I started, I was concerned that everyone at the gym would look down on me (I had never belonged to a gym before). But of course no one did, (except probably myself), and they taught me to look forward to my next accomplishment, rather than focus on any failings. It's not just the coaches, either: I have had teammates (I think teammate is a more appropriate term than "gym member") offer on several occasions to do an extra run with me when I have fallen behind, encourage me when they finish before me, and congratulate me after every work out. After years of inactivity, I had been yearning to get back into my body--to move and play--but did not have the means or the knowledge to do so on my own. Now, after just a few months at CFA, I already am beginning to feel powerful, strong, flexible, agile. Not only do I feel better in my body, but my mood has has improved tremendously as well. They met me where I was, and continue to lead me to where I want to be. In short, CFA is FUN, the people are GENEROUS, and the work outs are AWESOME. read more

Being a transplant from Boston, getting to know people around Austin is rather difficult. In fact, it truly sucks. My northeast mentality tends to shut people off immediately. Coming off of an existing injury, and trying to get in shape for a few marathons, I joined your standard 24-hour gym. My routine was to work out for 2 hours and avoid being hit on by a couple sleazy trainers. I became frustrated with this because I was no where near achieving my fitness goals ( in addition to that, the trainers weren't at all helpful). A co-worker suggested that I join a Cross-fit gym in order to produce better, faster results. My first stop was to check out the big, fancy cross-fit gym that every one talked about. Let me tell you, from someone that does not have a confidence issue, I was immediately turned off by the "meatheady" and "competitive" nature of that gym. If I wanted to become a man, then I would just plain have the surgery, thanks. I don't need to feel like an outcast because my abs are lacking one pack. Onto the next Cross-fit gym: Crossfit Austin. I was humbled by the "mom and pop" physique as soon as I walked in. Upon my first day of On-Ramp, I really felt comfortable. I looked around and noticed people of all shapes, sizes, and ages trying to achieve greatness (whatever that may be). The one thing that really wows me about Cross-Fit Austin is that the coaches are there to teach mechanics (even for RUNNERS). BACK TO BASICS folks! We have to crawl before we can walk. The coaches teach just that. They give you the tools you need to succeed or to meet your goals. Tristy, Wes, and Boone ENCOURAGE and MOTIVATE the way Coaches should. I may not be the best in the class, but I have my strengths and I definitely have my weaknesses. The coaches knew I had some pre-existing injuries and helped we work on building myself back up. I have run faster races, and soon-to-be better marathon all because of them. Let me finish off by saying, I look forward to leaving work and seeing "family". PS: Burpees suck. I've been going for a little over a year now. I have lost about 50lbs and have greatly improved my strength and speed. Joining this gym a year ago is the best thing I have done to improve my fitness. I initially joined hoping to lose a few pounds and to try to get in better shape. Doing these workouts 3 times a week, and following the recommended diet has completely transformed my body type. I really appreciate the attention the instructors give to form and detail during complex lifts and exercises to prevent injuries. The class setting is really good for motivating you to give a strong effort at every workout. I was searching for a different fitness experience compared to the big box corporate gyms. Being a fitness amateur, I always felt lost going to one of those places. So much equipment...where do I start... what should my workout plan be? All questions probably every non-gym junkie gets perplexed with... So what do you do?... Hire one of their personal trainers...@ $$$ While that will get you started, it wasn't sustainable for me. They'd prescribe a workout routine & coach you through multiple sessions so that you'd eventually be able do it on your own. Problem is, as soon as I was trying to follow the plan on my own, I was back to feeling lost and missing the motivation, guidance, and modifications that a instructor provides. After years of neglect, and paying for a membership I was barely using at Lifetime, I stumbled across Crossfit Austin. Right from the assessment "interview" they provide, I knew I had found my fitness remedy. The coaches are fabulous. They're present throughout the classes, guiding the workout, proving instructions, offering modifications based on fitness levels, so that everyone works together as a team and has a great experience. The workout is always changing, building on previous milestones, and keeping it interesting. I find it to be the perfect mix between working out with a trainer and going to the gym on your own, all for a price in between what you'd normally pay for both combined at a big box gym. I was also glad to find out they offer different level classes. I started out at the "newbie" level they called Foundations (aka Level 1). After a couple months I was physically doing things I never thought possible (a 7min mile, & other milestones for me). I later discovered that other Crossfit places don't always have this option... Glad that Crossfit Austin does... Last but not least; the fellow fitness travelers you meet in the process are great. It really does have a family feel (but not in a cultish way...). One can only describe belonging to Crossfit Austin as life-changing. I wouldn't say that I hated working out, but before I started Crossfit in January, I would get bored very easily. There are only so many times you can do the 30 day shred before you want to put a hot poker to your eye, and trust me, it is far less than 30 days. I also lacked the motivation to get my butt up and moving on a regular basis. Crossfit Austin has given me this momentum. The workouts are always varied, and to this day, I am constantly learning new things and am always challenged. I am NEVER bored and am excited to tackle things that I once found daunting. From the first day when I was dying from running my first 200 meters I was hooked. Not because of the running (ha!) but because my coach (shout out Rob W.!) had a huge smile on his face as I huffed and puffed my way through the door -- in that moment I knew this place was for me. Some days it will hurt to sit down and it will be even more painful to stand up, but all of the pain you feel from a kick-butt workout will be worth it. It takes hard work to get the body that you want but if you are willing to put in that work everyone at Crossfit Austin will be right there next to you, cheering you on, teaching you, motivating you, and inspiring you. Joining CrossFit Austin is one of the best things I've done for myself. The coaches and trainers are passionate about CrossFit and olympic lifting and are dedicated to helping each member scale the gym experience so that it's both safe and challenging. They keep things fresh and interesting not just by varying the workouts each day, but also by holding special challenges, contests and fundraisers -- Crossfit Total Day, Mohican Warrior Challenge, Barbells for Boobs, to name a few. It's been amazing to watch the gym grow over the past year while still keeping its great character. The members are passionate athletes, too, and as dedicated to each other's success as they are to their own. And because of the genius of the CrossFit model, veteran athletes work out alongside rank beginners and are equally spent at the end of the hour. Let me tell you, speaking as one who is older than most everyone in the gym and started out weaker than just about anyone, sweating alongside a guy lifting 225 lbs to my 65 is damned inspiring. The folks at CrossFit Austin have become my family. It's great meeting them outside the gym, too. Thursday was Steak Night at Little Woodrow's, and we were there chowing down! I'm celebrated my one year anniversary last week, and I have a lot to celebrate. For starters, I've lost nearly 30lbs and am wearing a size 6, thanks to the workouts and following the great nutritional advice from on-ramp. For the first time in my life I can do pushups and pullups and doubleunders. I can deadlift more than my body weight. I have muscles! I'm off blood pressure and cholesterol medication. At 54, I feel as though I've discovered the Fountain of Youth. Nothing I've ever tried before has yielded these kinds of results. My big complaint about this place is not the gym facility (a tricked out garage in an industrial park) or the membership and pricing structure - which seems reasonable, it is the quality of the trainers. I joined an on-ramp class earlier this summer, which I enjoyed overall, but I was proselytized at about the virtues of not eating meat and eating a Paleo diet. One trainer shared that she was disgusted by the thought of drinking any milk that came from an animal. Great, thanks for sharing, I love cream in my coffee thank you! Another problem I had was that I injured myself on the second day of class from not warming up adequately before they started the session. When I told the trainer the next day all she said was "I hope not bad". Really? Is that all you can say? I was able to continue with the remaining classes only because I decided to modify my workout. I am not convinced that the trainer would have come up with an alternate activity for me. I think that with a little more experience and time they may figure out how to spread their Paleo diet message in a more palatable way, no pun intended and with more time and experience with clients they will be better able to give proper direction to avoid injury. read more
