CRU made for the best birthday weekend!
The evening of our visit (my sister and I), I could see this bright chandelier from the window of where we were staying, and people flowing in, people flowing out.
It was the first night we were in town and didn't have a plan for where we would dine, so I suggested we check it out and we walked over - really blown away on first impression. There's music on high, dim lighting, incredible light fixtures and wall decor that was modern, eclectic, classy, and nautical. The staff and crew were dressed sharp, as were the patrons inside, so this is definitely a place that you might stand out in if you show up in a t-shirt and board shorts.
The seating immediately upon entering were high tables and stools, and by the windows overlooking the water were L-shaped tables with pinstripe cushions dressed in what looked like waist belts.. haha so clever the way this place was dressed!
Inside, the dining area is a bit more formal. Larger round and rectangular tables, a little quieter from the big open bar in front and there is a smart fireplace that keeps it comfortable with the chill of the evening. The chairs are fine and mitch-match, hodge-podge, again giving this spot an edge that was both hip and trendy but maintaining a nice high-end quality. This is where we sat, and I of course chose the big blue suede arm chair.. all I was missing was the fez and smoking pipe.
Our server David gave us the complete low-down on what we were interested in drinking/eating, from the selection of beer down to the flavor of oysters both native and distant from the area. We weren't very hungry, so instead of a meal, we worked on a couple of appetizers. We selected 2 of the the local Pocomo oysters, served on ice with a thimble of cocktail sauce and a light sherry vinagarette, and 2 large buttery West Coast oysters from Washington (the name escapes me currently). Next, an order of calamari that was served with this divine, spiced dipping sauce with saffron and spicy sauteed peppers. It was cooked well, you could taste that it was fresh, and no heavy frying in oil. Our second app was an order of hushpuppies, drizzled in lavender honey, and later found that the dough used to make them is made fresh on location. Soft and fluffy (baked instead of friend maybe?), more like a zeppole than the hard cornmeal golf balls I'm accustomed to in a hushpuppy. How could I tell how good these were? My eyes rolled up in my head on first bite.. jeezus...
We ended our meal, despite our being totally stuffed, with a sweet and savory dessert of key lime pie with coconut encrusted crumble and dark chocolate pudding - both topped with whipped cream and served in a mason jar, and mine sent over with two candle propped on top. Yay!!
What made this visit a memorable one, besides the great food, amazing service, incredible ambiance, and extremely convenient location, was the fact that not one - both BOTH - owners came over to our table, made a big impression on me. I saw for myself, the owners didn't just sit back and survey how their staff was conducting themselves, they were up on their feet making conversation with clients, helping shift tables for large parties, taking a photo of my sister and I with my phone, offering to serve another glass of beer, and wishing me a happy birthday. My sister and I returned the following evening - and they remembered us! Offered us prime seating, and asked how our trip in Nantucket was so far.
What makes a restaurant business successful isn't always JUST the food - but the people that provide, serve, and ask about how you like the food.
A visit two days in a row speaks volumes. Our server David spotted us in the street on the morning of our departure on his way to work, and stopped to say hi, shake our hand, and wish us well.
CRU made an amazing impression. Every age-group under the sun can come together here, enjoying the music and company and really incredible, friendly, and genuine service. The price margin for a meal is in the $$$ range, but the quality of food and the creative blends of flavor the serve it in would be worth it I'm sure. Both of our visits were in the evening, so I can only imagine how lovely it would be during the day.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This restaurant serves food until 11PM, many places stop at 9/9:30. So late-night drinking AND eating can ensue!
Make a stop here if you can! They also do Brunch, I heard ;) read more
