took a trip up from phila to see the area. the movie really sparked an interest. We weren't sure how the locals would be with sightseers interested in a tragic event. Maybe you'd like the Jasper White's "Summer Shack" in Cambridge or Foxwoods better - fake bouys, plastic lobsta pots, and some seagulls screwed to walls? People do eat, drink, and stay overnight at the Crow's Nest and survive the experience. The fish and lobster is fresh off the boat, and the beer is cold and cheap, and you can get a good burger any way you like it. So if you're looking for an $18 shrimp cocktail, stay in Beantown and drop a hundred bucks at Legal's. If you want to eat in Gloucester where the real people eat (as well as Clooney, Lane, Speilberg, and Junger), stop in and have a beer and some steamas at the Crows Net. Stayed here for one night for a friend's wedding-- it was the only place open, and for the price (only $75 a night for high season) it deserves 4/5 stars. While the rooms were spartan, they were clean and comfortable enough. The staff was flexible with check in/check out time which was really helpful. The owner of the Bar/Hotel is the sister of the man who owns the Fort Square Cafe and family of some of the guys who perished in what became known as The Perfect Storm. They have great stories and are really pleasant people. Not the nicest hotel in the area, but for the cost, it was definitely worth 4 stars. read more

What can I say, It's a fisherman's bar, notably famous for its role in the major motion picture, "The Perfect Storm." I have always had a pleasant experience here, being someone who worked in the fishing industry, this type of setting is typically where long trips out to sea would start and end for crew. I first went to theCrow's Nest in July 1999 prior to the movie coming out(The Perfect Storm) with my three kids. It was the weekend JFK Jr. crashed his plane south of the Cape. We met Mark Wahlberg and played pool with him at around 10 in the morning one day. he was drinking Budweiser and great with the kids. My oldest daughter was 14 at the time and got some pictures taken with Mark. I met Sebastian Jungier at the CN bar one night and he was cool. We stayed at the rooms for like $30.00 per night and they seemed fine. We always go on a Cape Ann whale watch when we are in Gloucester and have always had a nice time with seeing alot of whales. The chowder at the Crow's Nest was good and the owner at the time was great. Interesting experience and Rockport is a cool place also:) read more

My husband and I make this an annual trip. We love the Crow's Nest. Haven't been in a couple years, so we are overdue and plan to go very soon. Our first time (2009) was an incredible experience. Why? We'll after sitting there for not even a half hour I hit $100 in Keno, THEN later on the Deadliest Catch guys came in. Captain John from the Time Bandit and Josh, Capt. Phil's son. We got to meet them and actually Josh said next to my hubby and chatted. I was star struck, very nice down to earth guys!! Met a bunch of the locals and blended right in. Delany's pizza, which is right next store has killer pizza, the best. And the Crow's let's you order it and bring it to eat back at the bar, that was cool. We hit other places in our stay you know the waterfront tourist traps with high prices. Well didn't enjoy that as much as the Crow's Nest, believe me. If I remember correctly, You CANNOT play pool for a couple hours in the late afternoon because there are some older local gentlemen that play everyday and the table is there's for their nightly tournament, they are quite good too. I was fine with that and actually shot the breeze with one of them who actually remembered me a year later. Even played a game with him when they were done. WE stayed one night, and yes it's not the Ritz, but believe me for the price you can't beat it and to my surprise, was VERY clean. Like others have said, the place certainly has Character! If you are a people person you will enjoy yourself, if you are a snob just drive by. read more

I have never been met by a more rude or uninviting group of people in my life. Just coming back from a nice stroll on the beach and we thought we would stop in and grab a drink at the Crow's Nest- they were really slow (it was Easter Sunday) I was surprised they were even open. Even with so few people the glares we got as we walked through those doors were almost enough to make me want to turn around and walk right back out them but I thought I would at least give them a chance. So we sat down at the bar- the bar tender just gave us a disgusted look and asked for our ID's- Me and my boyfriend had ours but his Mother who is in her 50's did not. They insisted that she would need an ID to drink so she opted to get a glass of water...Apparently, according to the rude ditz behind the bar, it is illegal to serve her even water without an ID, in fact, she could not be in there without an ID. It was the biggest load of shit I have EVER heard but I must say I was a little relieved to be leaving this dive. However, The Gloucester House, which is right down the road, is a much classier place with better beer and they were actually open too. The bar tender was so nice he just let us hang out until 10 PM even though they closed at 9 PM. Needless to say he received a handsome tip for his kindness and they received our business for the rest of our stay- They are a fabulous and friendly group of people. I would definitely suggest taking a skip down the road and right pass this dump to the Gloucester House if you are looking for an enjoyable time. read more

Let's just say that the place turned out to be a blast...the people are friendly...drunk but friendly...and quite the interesting bunch...it may have been a crack den at one point in the past but my friend and I (my VERY PICKY FRIEND) didn't notice any kind of drug activity...it wasn't obvious let's put it that way..anyhoo the pool games were a riot, the bartender had the longest pours I've ever seen, the rooms were NOT filthy (I went & looked at them and I was only into one White Russian at that point)...in fact, room #25 was just renovated and at the bargain rate of $65/night you couldn't ask for more..I mean you can drink and play pool downstairs and stumble up (and I mean stumble..it's dark back there) up the stairs to your room. Yes, I thought I would have to run DNA testing on the beds but honestly, it was clean...no kidding...yes, the street is busy at all hours so just shut the windows...anyway it's the best dive bar I've been into in a long while and plan on going back...signed...The Jersey Girls! read more

A Definite Must for the price, and the convenience! NO MIN NIGHT STAY HERE! This Bar/Hotel is the perfect place for a reasonable stay in the heart of Gloucester! They are extremely flexible with check in, as we stayed at the wedding until very late and checked in around 12:30am! My boyfriend and I had a drink and met the nicest older couple I have ever met! We talked and laughed with this couple until close, and then walked right up to our room for a cozy and clean night stay! If you are hungry, make sure you grab some snacks from their vending machine before you go to your room! The room had everything we needed... Refrigerator, TV, comfortable bed, pillows, and plenty of towels! They had AWESOME pressure in the shower, and great hot water! They also had plenty of shampoo! Place was very clean, and updated...its all you need for an affordable vacation or destination wedding! My husband and I have been visiting the Gloucester area for the past 3 years. We go whale watching with Cape Ann Whale Whatching tours. We are from Missouri. This past July we arrived at our tour very early so we decided to take a walk. We had heard about the Crow's nest the first time we visited and knew about its affiliation with the movie the Perfect storm. We decided that we would walk in and take a look. There were probably only about 7 people there at around noon. EVERYONE turned and stared at us as we walked in. The bar tender was quick to tell us that if we wanted food they didn't have any. We just ordered 2 sodas, drank them and left. When we went to leave one of the people spoke to us and we told them we were here to go whale watching. They were friendly then, but it was an ackward visit. I just got done watching the movie on TV and decided to google it and see what was on the net about. I was surprised to see that they have rooms and a website. After looking at it and seeing other reviews it looks like the Crows nest is a place for the locals to laugh at tourists. The rooms looked to be a joke and our visit there was a bit like they liked to poke fun. I really think they have a kick at anyone that would want to rent the room and the description of the rooms on their sight have hidden jokes (I feel, after reading others reviews) It might have been a great place at once, but doesn't welcome outsiders now. read more

To those of you who wrote awful reviews, are you seriously that ignorant? The Crows Nest is just that, A DIVE BAR!! These are the best bars to be in. I am from the south and went just for the experience. It was a GREAT experience. I was not met by unfriendly people or staff. We were welcomed in and even asked if we wanted to see the bar's photo album from the movie. Fisherman were telling us stories. It was an experience we will not forget while visiting this town. We are actually going to go back in before leaving. Unlike most places that become very commercialized when becoming famous, this place has not at all. it was completely like yo would expect, smelly, full of locals, great beer, and fun conversation. if you are looking for a place to wear your suit, jacket, and fresh water pearls this is NOT the place for you but if you are looking for a great small New England fisherman town feel, this is a great experience!! read more

The bar itself gets 5 stars just for how cool and how AUTHENTIC it is. There are real people, including real fishermen and yes, there is quite a bit of drinking that goes on. Imagine that... And yes, some people get loud and by their very nature they are kind of rough, but you don't find many interior designers down at the docks! The bartenders are down to earth friendly people and the locals were very polite and welcoming to me. The beer was cold and cheap. The margaritas were not bad either. Absolutely no drug use or drug sales were evident and the people were not obvious users either, so I'm not sure how the whole Crack house thing got started. The only reason I gave the place 3 stars on the whole was the room was hot as blazes with no individual t-stat. Therefore I had to open all windows to cool down a little but the endless noise of big trucks only stops at around 4:00 a.m. and only for about half an hour! The place is well worn, but honestly, it was clean. And the water pressure in the shower was great. I didnt sleep well, and I'm not sure I would stay again for two nights, but mayby one night. I would deffinately go back to the bar though. I love listening to the fishermen tell their stories and just being some place real, with real people, living real lives. I must say that I was a bit apprehensive after reading some of the less than favorable reviews but being the adventurous type my husband and I are and never having any trouble at any place we've ever gone we decided to give it a whirl! What a hoot! And, a treat. The bartender, Terry was wonderful..she was attentive and efficient and friendly too. We made friends with all the locals, especially Red (who lives above the bar), who regaled us with his seafaring stories of when he was a captain. Another local lady gave us the 'real' scoop on the 'real' men who lost their lives in what became the movie 'The Perfect Storm'. There are photos of the cast members on the walls and folks are willing to share stories too. The bar is typical of dive bar's but that is what makes it attractive and fun. No food is served although there is a vending machine. The beer is cheap and cold and a good time was had by all. Several reviewer's mentioned feeling unwelcome. We did not feel this way at all..yes, everyone turned to stare when we walked in but that happens frequently to us everywhere we go! We gave a big smile and said a booming hello and suddenly everyone wanted to know our stories too! Go with an open mind and a big smile...have fun! read more
