Went north to be with family during a very trying time. I arrived mid afternoon to check in. Walked into a rustic historical local bar that stood still in time. Checked in with a very friendly barkeep. A young man who I now call a friend. Went to my room and found it super clean, neat and well tended. I went to the bar got introduced and immediately felt like family. Although they don't serve food, they recommended all kinds of restaurants to attend in the area. This is a great bar/inn, just a great place to hang your hat while traveling lightly. read more

Okay, besides the part that it is associated with a movie, this really is a locals pub and they made us feel right at home. The beers were reasonably priced, the people definitely like talking to the visitors and it takes you back to the old school pub atmosphere. I doubt much has changed here in a long time, which is what makes it perfect! Love that they really do want the memory alive of their lost loved ones and make an effort to talk to anyone that comes in. What a great remembrance and love to a great town and people. Tharr she blows! It's the Crow's Nest of Gloucester!!! The Crow's Nest was depicted in motion picture "The Perfect Storm" filmed in Gloucester. The real Crow's Nest is located along Main Street and the Inner Harbor. Several celebrities have visited the Crow's Nest including Mark Wahlberg, George Clooney, Diane Lane, and Steven Spielberg. The bar atmosphere is dark and loud with all of the amenities of a good local dive bar including bar stool seating, framed pictures on the wall, internet jukebox, pinball machine, pool table, and Keno, which is frequented by locals and sailors alike-aaarrrrgh!! They serve lunch too! Besides the bar, the Crow's Nest offers some of the most reasonably priced lodging in Gloucester. My 2 buddies and I stayed here recently for only a mere $75.00 for one night, that's less than $30 per person in a very touristy area. The hotel staff even provided us with an extra cot, in addition to the two double beds. We checked into our "fine hotel" from inside the bar. There's no onsite parking, so we had to hunt for a parking space on the street. We entered the hotel through the rear of the building via a dark unlit alley. Did I say this place was a fine hotel?? What I really meant to say is that the Crow's Nest is a damn fine hotel!! - but only if you're wearing special beer goggles provided in the bar. Our sh*tastic room was above the bar and overlooked Main Street and the foggy harbor with many docked ships and boats. The "sketchy" room was crammed with 2 beds and a cot with sheets, 20" TV with cable, bathroom with tub/shower, extra towels, little soaps, and a couple of lights. The trim was very worn out and the room also had a drop ceiling with tiles. There was no A/C in the room, so the windows were open with the aroma "stench" of the sea breeze which filled the room. My buddies stretched out on the beds chilling out before our "pub crawl" and began wondering if there was any "pirate's treasure" hidden up in the drop ceiling since the ceiling air vent was bent and not working. They decided to take some peeks in the ceiling. Let's just say they found some very interesting "surprises" leftover from some of the previous guests and leave it at that! After our "pub crawl" through G-L-A-M-O-R-O-U-S Gloucester, we turned in for the night at our "far from first class" room. I decided to rest on top of the bed with my own bedsheet, which I brought with me. I wasn't taking any chances here! Since I was the DD (had minimal drinks) and sober, I did not get any sleep because I was a bit creeped out by the room and it was next to the very busy Main Street with large loud trucks passing by all night. My buddies were wearing those special beer goggles and were so wasted from a long night of drinking that they didn't give a "flying flip" and crashed under the filthy covers and bedsheets and passed out very quickly. Ewwww!! Just picture a double vision of Homer Simpson (Mmmmm, beer..drool) and Barney Gumbel (Belchh!!) passed out. They slept right through all the loud outside commotion. In the morning, I looked outside the window and there were flocks of seagulls were flying around, making lots of noise, and making the harbor and cityscape look even more beautiful than ever, and where are the crows? This place could be nicknamed the Seagull's Nest. We left the keys in the bar, got some coffee at the Lone Gull, and got the heck out of Dodge in the Ford! Would we return to the Crow's Nest? Definitely! The bar has a lot of character, but skip the hotel unless you are really, really desperate or you're Drunky McDrunkerson! My buddy's pickup truck is a nicer place to get some sleep. I'm being serious. All I can say is this adventure to the Crow's Nest was an unforgettable experience! We've been staying here for our yearly trip for the past couple of years. I have no complaint about the rooms. But our past experience at the bar has made it that we will never stay again. Annemarie, the owner, was the sweetest so I have nothing bad to say about her. Which made me hesitant to review. But there is an older bartender, short blond hair, possibly named Ann that is horrible. I've never witnessed anybody with such lousy people skills in my life. She's rude, and combative for no reason other than she's miserable. The other bartenders are nice, especially Bob. My girlfriend and I had to stop in after we coincidentally found out we were staying in the town the Perfect Storm was filmed at. There's no better way to experience the character of an area then visiting a hole-in-the-wall local bar. We had some beers, chatted with Norma (a friendly local who gave us her tour of the place and told us about the history and the stories of the fishermen who lost their lives at sea, laughed at one-liners and sarcastic jokes thrown around from local to local. It's exactly what we expected - and we had a great time. That being said, I think the negative reviews left here were from people expecting a lounge or craft beer bar... understand you're in a local bar that's been there for 40 plus years and didn't care to change a thing about the place.. in my opinion, those are the best kind of bars and experiences. They serve cold beer, and it's filled with character and history.. I don't mind if the bartender doesn't flash me a smile. Definitely worth a visit - just understand it for what it is. read more

We were on vacation August 2019 (yes a tad late on this review) in Rockport and Gloucester and had to stop for a visit at the Crow's nest in Gloucester with Perfect Storm being one of our all time favorite movies! It really is the friendliest bar in town! Yes lots of tourists still check out the place because of the movie but everyone in the place was so nice! And Mary Anne was working that afternoon. She was so nice and they had so many great photos on the wall and they had a photo album of all the cast and real people of the movie. So glad we stopped by. Zero stars. The worst bar I've ever been to. The bartender was awful, decided to call the cops on me and my friend after I had only TWO glasses of wine all night as the designated driver, because my friend had a couple drinks earlier. The bartender was apparently friends with the police who told me to give my keys to either her or the cops, or be arrested. I decided to give my keys to the awful bartender who clearly had friends in the corrupted police department of Gloucester and was given a disgusting room. Then had to miss work because I was told I wouldn't get my keys until 9AM because she decided to call the cops for no reason. Walked back in the bar a half hour later in order to be able to get my charger out of my car, only to hear her talking shit to every customer in the bar about me and for her to give my car keys to a RANDOM stranger that held my keys hostage. Literally the worst experience at a bar I have had by far. Don't bother. read more

"The Perfect Storm" is one of my favorite movies. I mean, George Clooney & Mark Wahlberg, what more does a girl need? Seriously though, it's a fantastic tale of brave men who lost their lives at sea on the "Andrea Gail", a swordfish boat. For fans of the film you already know that this true story which was made into a book by Sebastian Junger takes places Gloucester, Massachusetts. Gloucester is the country's oldest seaport and has some undeniable deep roots and proud residents. Fans of the book or movie will also recognize the semi-edgy " Crow's Nest" which was depicted in the movie right in the heart of this New England town. Ever since I heard this was an actual place I have always wanted to visit. I've heard all sort of mixed reviews. "Seedy" was a word often used. I was told stories of how the rooms upstairs used to be rented out by the hour, if you know what I mean. Now they rent their newly updated rooms at a steal. I must admit at first I was a little hesitant for a visit and then I thought, I'm a Philly chick. I'm pretty sure I've seen it all. How bad could it be?" It wasn't at all. Maybe because it was a Sunday afternoon or because it just may be a tad different than some are used to. You want a beer and to shoot the shit? Come here. No frills. For me personally, it had a deeper meaning... We were welcomed warmly by everyone...the women chatting outside on the bench on Main Street, the bartender, the locals, the man from NYC who was also just a fan of the story behind the space, the elderly man who gave my girls a bag of snacks and even the owner who I thought looked familiar. As we pulled up and parked right out front without hassle, I was actually a tad shocked to see the building on a street rather than on the dock which is where is was located in the film. Once inside, a woman who was certainly "a regular" later explained to me that the set crew built a Crow's Nest just across the street from actual bar. That they didn't want to interior business. Wow. Upon entering the "dive bar" complete with a pool table and Sunday football on the tv, I was immediately handed a photo album of celebrities and behind the scene movie photos. Was it that obvious I wasn't a local? I ordered a tasty,cold Fisherman draft brew for $3 and would've ordered some bar food if hadn't just eaten. I sat and took it all in as I sipped my light ale. As I looked over all of the memorabilia and the photos of the cast, the entire story just came to life before my eyes. It was surprisingly pretty powerful, more so than I anticipated. It is still such a sad story and you can just tell how heart-breaking it was to this community. They're very close knit. They proudly showed me around, pointing to different photos and explaining who everyone was in their thick, New England accents which I'm such a sucker for. I asked a few questions but could've sat and chatted for hours. I knew they had some real stories to tell. It says a lot that the cast got so close to these people, like they wanted to honor them. I happened to notice the bulletin board hanging in the corner. It had everyone's name and birthdays on it. It really gave you a sense of what kind of community this is. It was touching. They were funny and joked about me coming back and bringing hubs...we would come down and drink, go upstairs, then come back down, drink more and return to our room again. The scene in the movie with the ceiling shaking may just have been true :) They may have been a tad rough around the edges to most, but they had personality and were nothing but very kind to us. The intriguing woman who was chatting with my girls was Maryanne. Her mom owns the place and her brother Bobby, who she actually lost was portrayed by Mark Wahlberg in the film. The role Diane Lane played was a women Maryanne introduced to her brother, who at the time he went out to sea, was engaged to marry. Maryanne had told my girls, one who is in 2nd grade that she was a 2nd grade teacher herself. She was rather beautiful. Thin, sandy blonde hair, dressed for the season in boots and a killer leather jacket. I even asked her where she bought it and was shocked to hear "Nordstrom's Rack". I didn't mean to sound so bewildered but I just didn't think people that frequent this of joint would shop there. Shame on me for judging. You know what they say about ASSuming. Maryanne chatted with us for a good while. She said "I better go before I start drinking mimosas". She joked about the photo of her and her "boyfriend" as she pointed to Mark Wahlberg. I told her we would have to fight over him. Her response? "Well, YOU don't have a picture with him". Touché Maryanne, Touché. She also told us to visit the Gloucester Men Memorial down the street which we did afterwards. I had no idea just many men this town had lost. Hands down the filthiest, most unfriendly establishment in which I have ever set foot. My wife and I just popped in thinking we would have a beer or two before heading further into town for dinner. Three people were smoking inside. Isn't that illegal in MA? I like a good dive bar as much as the next guy. I'll give a good dive a decent rating but when it smells bad in a place and people look at me strangely, that can ruin everything for me. Call me crazy. To be clear, I have no clue what the rooms look like, or what the staff is like because we didn't stay long enough to find out., so when I say we felt unwelcome it wasn't because of the staff, it was because of the clientele. All but two or three bar stools were taken and it felt like nearly everyone sensed our presence, stopped their conversations and casually looked at us trying to look like they weren't. It was seriously like a John Carpenter movie where everyone in the bar was part of some kind of collective and we needed to become the next members or die. We weren't particularly touristy or anything, my wife had a Red Sox shirt and I had an All Star Game shirt, as we're both baseball fans but it's not like we walked in with Gucci clothing, shopping bags from the mall and a Chihuahua in tow. Long story short we were in for about one whole minute, tops, before the creepy stares from most of the people at the bar made clear we were not locals, which made us feel very unwelcome. As for parking, forget it. There is only street parking and no parking lot. There are many choices for drinks in Gloucester. It's a shame the owners of this establishment haven't cleaned it up, promoted the movie tie-in and made a mint from it like the Cheers franchise, but I guess it's fitting that they lose business for their decision to remain authentic, dirty, unwelcoming or whatever it is they are trying to accomplish. I would steer clear of the Crow's Nest and head to Jalapeño's or Dog Bar for drinks. If you don't mind cigarette smoke, being stared at or the feeling that someone's about to conduct a drug deal, the Crow's Nest may be perfect for you. How on earth anyone could give this place five stars is beyond comprehension. That only serves to drag down the usefulness of the rating system on Yelp. Seriously, if you rated this place a 5-star establishment on par with the Ritz Carlton? Ian Dubbs gave a pretty comprehensive review but got the rating all wrong and missed the mark, at least slightly, in describing the bar's atmosphere and, moreover, the general human worth of the local color one will find therein. Let this review serve, primarily, as a caution to tourists who read The Perfect Storm (or saw the major motion picture): The Crow's Nest is a glorified crack den. Prior to its fortunate turn in the aforementioned media, it wasn't even glorified. Just a crack den. Plenty of remnants remain as hardy seamen -- fewer, in proportion with the drastically reduced fishing fleet -- still come here between tours to get wasted and get their rocks off. First, a brief lesson in Gloucester geography. In the film, the Crow's Nest was depicted as being, essentially, attached to the dock (the producers utilized the Heritage Center's berths). In fact, the Crow's Nest is located on the side of Main Street opposite the water and further east, more or less across from the new cruise terminal. Point being, it's beyond the eastern terminus of places-worth-seeing on Main (and Rogers) Street. As a hotel, the Crow's Nest is a total nightmare. Horrific beyond humor. Ian's review does a fine job of detailing the 'accommodations'. Do not stay here. If you do, make sure you're up-to-date on all your vaccinations. Calling the bar a total dive is, without a doubt, complimentary. The only acceptable excuse for having at drink at the Crow's Nest is to serve as an anecdotal stop on a Gloucester pub crawl. Have I mentioned how perfect G-Town is far crawling? It truly is. I digress. It can serve as the 'lowest of lows' when you're telling your pals about all the different bars you got shit-faced in 'that night'. Otherwise, avoid. read more

Exactly what I expected. I think if people go into a location expecting a luxury hotel above a bar for $75/night they are crazy. Great location to going whale watching at Cape Ann Whale Watch (that was great too btw). We stayed 2 nights, everything worked fine, room overlooks the harbor area, I honestly never noticed the bar below us. Door's locked fine, bathroom was spotless, included a fridge and microwave that I don't get in some $200/night hotels. Faint state smoke smell when entering the back door, but it didn't bother me or my wife. We didn't grab a drink at the bar, but I didn't feel unsafe or anything. Not a whole lot to say about this place. It is a perfect bar. Got booze, got beer, got people to talk to. No frills. For serious drinking this is the place to go. Incredibly friendly. They hosted a bunch of stranded navy sailors. Good Americans. read more

My gf and I were passing through, we met a local gentleman/retired fisherman who lives upstairs from the bar. Think his name may have been Mo, and he made the experience worth while! The place is about what you would expect for a dive bar but it's the nice, welcoming locals that make it a joy to be there. TouchTunes jukebox also nice to be able to play some good jams. read more

We stopped in for a quick beer because of the movie. The bartender was friendly and welcoming along with the other patrons. Great local bar. One beer turned into a few. read more
