After all, the temperatures don't soar above 95 degrees for any stretch of time in the Pacific Northwest. Unfortunately I moved to Texas recently, and I was forced to spend the time and money to get the A/C functioning again or face a miserable summer drenched in sweat. Another Yelper had raved about Pro Automative, so I decided to make the long drive out of town to get a price estimate. I had already checked with a few shops in town, and I found Jay's estimate fair. He did a thorough check of the system; and consequently, he could give me an accurate run down of the labor and parts for the job. I scheduled the appointment for the next week on Monday. He was able to knock it out the same day. I arrived in the morning. Rather than sitting in their office all day, he gave me a ride to the library where I could lounge in comfort, use the free Wifi and take advantage of the magazines and books to read. When the car was ready, he picked me up in it. This allowed me to feel the power of the A/C working again. It's a month later, and my car A/C is still keeping me cool on these hot Texas days. When car1 had problems, we took it to Dennis who went well out of his way to help us. We went back when car2 needed 100K maintenance done. When one of the new Motorcraft branded spark plugs was defective and broke within a week, he apologized profusely - even though it was obviously not his fault - and fixed it for free in an hour. We bought car3 knowing about problems. He found a few more, but instead of fixing it all and telling us later when we got the bill, he went through piece by piece and allowed us to pick and choose. Some of it was minor and he told us so. Only once has he pushed for an additional fix; I believe the words "catastrophic" and "could explode" were used. I told him what was wrong but he insisted that I had to do a full $130 diagnostic check to verify. After the diagnostic he confirmed the part I told him needed to be replaced. After that he charged me nearly $300 labor to replace a part that should have only taken 30 minutes max to replace. After that he quoted me over $200 labor to replace my headlights, something I ended up doing myself in less than an hour with minimal tools.

That said, I could tell from talking to Steve (and also watching him briefly interact with another customer) that he is legit. He reminds me of every mechanic I've really liked and felt like I could trust. You can just tell with some people by how they talk about what they do and how they look you in the eye that they are trying to do the best work they can for you and not just looking at you and seeing dollar signs. I have been going to the same mechanic for 15 years so probably not looking to make a change to that right now -- don't fix what isn't broken, right? -- but If I ever need to take my car somewhere else it will be here.
