    Meticulous I am…read morewriting to rave about my recent experience with NW Cabinets, located Poulsbo, Washington. True craftsmen and small family businesses are both endangered species. Thankfully they have not yet completely vanished. From beginning to end, Bill Ullrich and his two sons, Chase and Hans, were a pleasure to work with. They built and installed my new upper kitchen cabinets, and then modified and refaced the lower cabinets, with a level of skill and attention to detail that I've seldom seen before. Yet their prices were at or below those of their several local competitors. The installation required three full days. So, of course, I offered to let them keep their tools and equipment in place until they returned on the second and third days. Despite my offer, they insisted on completely cleaning up the workspace and removing all of their tools and protective coverings at the end of each work day. Except for the visible parts of the cabinets that had not yet been installed, you might not have even known that my kitchen was under construction. It was simply amazing. Do yourselves a favor, if you need kitchen cabinets, make NW Cabinets your first and only call. Thanks, guys!

    TASK: Remove existing backsplash and countertop and install a new backsplash and countertop…read more PROBLEM 1: NEITHER THE DEMOLITION CREW NOR THE INSTALLATION CREW WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR PREPPING THE COUNTERTOPS. Nothing was covered. All contents of the drawers were contaminated by demolition materials. In addition, during the demolition, the underlayment of the countertops was damaged. As stated in the contract, this was not to be addressed by Granite and Marble Specialists (GMS). Once the island countertop was removed, you could see that a heavy layer of glue remained on the underlay. The installers said that that was not their responsibility. They installed the countertop over the uneven underlayment of the residual glue. This meant that there were up to 1/2 inch gaps between the counter and the underlayment, stretching a span of 108.5 inches. Over time, this will lead to instability and breakage of the stone. The installers forged ahead and installed the new countertop independent of the gaps. The installers were adamant that they had installed the island countertop to level. RESULT: We had to remove the new countertop and have the surface sanded to level before having them reinstall the countertop. PROBLEM 2: NEITHER THE DEMOLITION CREW NOR THE INSTALLATION CREW WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR PREPPING THE BLACKSPLASH AFTER DEMOLITION. This meant that it was the homeowner's responsibility to install drywall and to make sure that the backsplash was level. The backsplash was 1.5 inches unlevel from one end of the backsplash to the other. Thus, in addition to the provision of drywall because the existing drywall was damaged during demolition, we had to shim the drywall to ensure the backsplash was level for the backsplash installation. RESULT: We had to go buy wood, cut it to the specific dimensions and install the new underlayment for the backsplash. IN SUM: GMS provided what the contract stated, an installed countertop and backsplash. It was not stated in the contract that it be level or that it be level to the degree that it was level prior to the new installation. The installers showed it to be level because the countertop was 108.5 inches long X 46 inches wide X 3cm deep. So, BEWARE. If this is the type of installation you are looking for, this is the organization for you.

My first encounter with them was when I was picking through their bone yard to come up with some quartz countertops for bathrooms in 2 houses. Anne was so accommodating working with me even though I knew she had so many other clients with big projects on her plate. As time went on our original countertop installer completely dropped the ball regarding the kitchen for both houses. Never ordered the quartz and never communicated the debacle to us. After many inquiries I found out that our colour choice had been discontinued. These were 2 custom homes. I reached out to Jason and Anne from Olympic they dove right in and saved the day, not without a ton of legwork, follow-up and extra effort to find the last two slabs in the US of the one quartz colour from the original order. The other order, let's just say, they are miracle workers. But it gets even better.... Original installer told me I needed more than the 2 slabs to do our kitchen and master bath, BUT Jason came out and cleverly templated our site. The countertops have a design that connotes a rhythm to it and their technicians (artists) cut the tops and waterfalls as to not interrupt its intent. From top to bottom this is a business that you will want to work with. You can see that everyone appears to enjoy their job and their clients. Refreshing in today's world.

Before moving forward, I asked several reasonable clarification questions about what was included in the quote, such as removal/disposal, templating, fabrication, delivery, plumbing or appliance reconnection, timeline, etc which was unclear in the quote. Instead of answering those questions, Tom responded in a dismissive and unprofessional way, asking whether I had read the estimate or looked at their website, and saying I could call him if I was "serious about doing business" with them. As a customer, I believe it is completely normal to ask detailed questions before hiring a contractor, especially for a home project involving cost, materials, and installation details. The lack of clear answers and the tone of the response made me lose confidence in moving forward with this company. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this company if you expect clear communication and respectful customer service.
