Crawdad Hole is a great place to enjoy a variety of Southern seafood dishes in the greater Jackson area. The hospitality of the wait staff and employees is second to none. Upon being seating during the lunch hour a few days before Christmas my friend and I were seated immediately and offered menus. We both opted to have the shrimp boil with corn, potatoes and sausage. For $16 dollars the portion was pretty generous (this is coming from a full time LA resident) though the shrimp was ever so slightly overcooked. Overall, I had a great experience and I plan to visit again to try some other dishes when I visit Mississippi again. read more

Love this place! I am new to the crawfish scene and this place is so fun. It's BYOB so my friends and I just bring some brewskis (I drink Mike's hard lemonade) and chillax on the picnic tables outside. The restaurant also has shrimps, tamales, and boiled peanuts. When my boyfriend graduates medical school, we are going to have a party here with his family from out of town. They'll get a kick out of the place. It looks a bit like a shack but is very clean. One time, however, the power went out and I had to use a flashlight in the bathroom. Tehehe. Finally, my last comment is that the restaurant closes July through October. I'm not sure why. We were just driving through Jackson and wanted something original. Crawdad is just off the highway and a local favorite. The seasoning was perfect and service fast. My husband, daughter and I stopped by for lunch! My daughter wasn't really hungry and only wanted fries! We ordered a shrimp Po-boy, French fries, and fried dill pickles and we spit it all! All 3 of us left full! The shrimp po-boy was really good, the fried pickles were way to salty,the fries weren't seasoned enough! The building is a little hole in the wall, but that doesn't bother me, it was still clean, and the waitress was attentive, but didn't make eye contact when speaking so you couldn't hear her soft spoken voice! I want to start this review with a quote from the owner, "Your $500 dollars isn't going to make or break this restaurant. Wrap it up, y'all need to leave!" We went to this "restaurant" for my wife's birthday with a few friends. In total we spent just over $500 on food, and it was BYOB which we also had to pay per person for drinking. We weren't served until 8:30 and then at 8:40 we were given to go boxes and were told "it was a long day, I'm ready to go home" by one of the employees. Then at 8:45, not just an employee, BUT THE OWNER, came over and told us "Your $500 dollars isn't going to make or break this restaurant. Wrap it up, y'all need to leave!" Amongst many other rude comments. Keep in mind they close at 9. We were constantly harassed by him and his kids who were the employees, calling us entitled, selfish (because we were keeping his staff "late"), approached us with a gun on his hip with his little security guard, then clapped as we left at 9, his little .380 Beretta isn't intimidating. Never in my life have I ever had an experience like I did at crawdad hole. I came into town from Atlanta, GA to visit my friend for her birthday. We decided to give this place a try since she loves crawfish and the atmosphere seemed great for a birthday celebration. This establishment is BYOB, they charge $3 a head and you can bring in whatever you want. Since we were unaware before we arrived, my friends husband and our other friends Fiance went to the gas station up the road to grab beers. My 3 friends and I went to the entrance and a sweet older gentleman named Stacy greeted us. He notified us that they do close at 9PM (We arrived at 8:15PM) but as long as we ordered our food before the kitchen closed at 8:45PM and we were still eating at 9PM, they would not kick us out. We paid him our $3 per person for the alcohol and went to sit at our table. We ordered our food at 8:20PM and received it around 8:30PM. Our whole table spend $500 ( Including tip) on food and were so excited. The food was delicious, but little did we know that our experience was about to go downhill QUICK. At 8:45PM a young worker (no older that 16/17) dropped us off togo bags and said " Ugh it's been a long day I am ready to go home" then walked away. About 2 minutes after, an older gentleman (Either the Manager or Owner) came to our table and very aggressively said "Y'all need to start wrapping it up." We stated Stacy told us as long as we were eating we could stay. He then interrupted us and said " Look, if you want to keep me and my staff here till 9:30PM and that makes you feel good, they by all means, do so" then walked away. We continued to eat since it was 8:50PM and had about 15LBS of crawfish to eat. Not even another 2 minutes later this guy returned to our table and said in a VERY sarcastic and condescending tone, " You know what you're right, the customer is ALWAYS right, so go ahead and keep eating your food." We then started explaining to him that we spend $500 at his facility and were told by Stacy we could finish our food after hours. AND that if it was such a problem, his kitchen staff should have not allowed us to order so much." He then interrupted us AGAIN and stated " Your $500 doesn't make or break this restaurant. So wrap it up and get out." Which of course, caused everyone at the table to begin arguing with this man. During this, one of the sons of this man ( he was MAYBE 15 years old) came up and started screaming at us to leave his dad alone. Of course we did not engage with the kid since he's a child, which then they both walked away. But it didn't stop there. Another 2 minutes passed ( At this point we're eating as fast as we can to get out of this place) a " Security" guard came to our table and told us to wrap it up. Mind you, this kid looked maybe 18. We then continued to explain to him that we spent the money and were told we were find when we first walked in. The older man came BACK and said " Don't yell at him he's just doing his job." Please note, while this conversation was being had, the "security" guard had his had on his little gun at his hip. We ended up leaving the establishment at 9:15PM ( 15 minutes past closing.) As we were leaving we were applauded out. Never have I EVER experienced the things that I did at a restaurant. From the disrespect from the Management/Owner to Children ages 11-17 working in a restaurant and engaging in customer disagreements. This place is a joke. Whats unfortunate about this place is it has so much potential. The atmosphere was fun, the food was delicious but the service was so terrible I will NEVER step food or recommend this place to anyone. If you do decided to visit this establishment after reading this review, make sure your a local only, clearly outsiders are not welcomed. read more

This place is a no-frills joint... the perfect place for chowing down on crawfish*! Jackson locals took me here on a beautiful Sunday evening. The line was manageable and we were able to find seats in the sun. The power was out but that didn't seem to faze anyone. It just meant we had to pay with cash. The crawfish was well-seasoned... not too spicy, the way I like it. I was pleasantly surprised by the boiled shrimp! It was delicious! I tried the potatoes... perfect too! We ordered 10lbs of crawfish. The batch was mixed... some were giant and some were puny. The bottom of the batch had quite a few tail-less duds though. BYOB for a couple bucks was no problem at all. The staff was attentive and stayed busy keeping the place clean picking up dishes and taking out smelly crawfish trash. This is a great family spot for hanging out and catching up. Now that I'm back in Mississippi, I'm having a serious addiction to getting in as much Crawfish as possible to make up for years of doing without out West. My boyfriend and I tried this place first a few weeks ago. It was a gorgeous day so it was great to sit outside. It's byob, but be warned they charge you a service fee, $3 a person for bottle beer. It's still a bargain as you'd pay way more than that if you had a few beers at any other place. The place is a open air shack looking establishment where you go through a line and order at the counter. I loved seeing all the music posters and other Mississippi themed pictures on the wall. We both ordered 2 lbs of crawfish that came with potatoes and corn. We happily found a picnic table right outside and dug in. I have to say these crawfish are really good and the best I've had so far. Yes, I prefer mine super spicy, but I'm crazy so I don't expect an establishment to survive cooking them like I like. Like others have said the potatoes and corn aren't boiled in with the crawfish, but there is seasoning on the table so you can spice them yourself. Personally, I'm ok with that. This is literally a hole in the wall, but the food is great. The food was ready really quick and you can take to go in one line or eat in in another. If you eat there you can bring your own adult beverage. Just beware that if you sit outside on the patio when it's raining there are spots that have roof leaks. What fun! Don't miss it. Most of our group was from out of town so this was an exceptional experience. It is really in a large park with lots of outdoor seating (park benches and metal round tables) next to the baseball diamonds. You can bring in one cooler of alcoholic beverages and just pay $5 each person at the door. Then find a seat. There is also seating under a roof sort of inside, but we liked being under the trees. We went on a Saturday night and the band Luckenbach was playing, which was a really good band if you like Willie Nelson's stuff. I loved it and knew most of the songs. Someone from our group went up to the window and ordered for our group. The Crawdads were great, but I especially loved the shrimp. It came with lots of corn on the cob and some great sausages. We needed lots of paper towels (which were on the table) and every once in awhile someone would come by and trade out the bucket of shells for an empty bucket. It's your standard crawdad's (although I found them too under seasoned). I did like the ambiance, though. It's a run down looking shack, much of what you'd see out at the bayou! They also allow you to byob which is a nice pointer if your ganna have some drinks while later enjoying some mud-bugs! But if we are simply rating the food, I'm pressed to say that the flavor was a bit lacking. The corn and potatoes don't seem to be boiled with the rest of the seasoned boil because they simply lack flavor. On the other hand. We are 100% Coonass from da bayou and we grew up eating crawfish. Not sure what to expect eating crawfish so far from home. What a nice surprise. Perfectly seasoned and cooked crawfish, great price. They start with high quality seafood and if you suck da heads the fat was excellent. Love the atmosphere. This is obviously where the locals go. Potatoes and corn are not seasoned with the boil, it would be nice to have a choice. Though it can be a nice contrast to the heat of the crawfish. If we lived here we'd be regulars. Where we do crawfish our lips are numb our eyes are watery and our noses are runnin honeyy... This place is definitely a hole in the wall and is hard to find from the street because it is hidden behind some trees. There is not a big menu so be prepared for either shrimp or crawfish. I had the boiled shrimp. It came out with either shrimp cocktail sauce or butter. I tried both but I'm a butter guy so that worked. Can't say it was great or not since I don't have much to compare it to but I at it all and tasted fine and not real spicy. I also had some corn and sausage and gumbo. All were fine. A true Mississippi experience! You hav not fully been embraced by the city until you have ventured to the Crawdad hole for Southern crawfish. It is everything summed up in a boil. It is right off Lakeland. I did not realize how easy it is to miss it if you are not familiar with the area. It has always been the 'spot' when you were craving crawfish. As a kid I always called them mini-lobsters and I probably played with them more than I actually ate them, but as an adult I do believe I have mastered the technique. In fact I think they take away your Southern card if you can't eat a certain amount of crawfish. What's best about this place is you eat outside on picnic tables. Its just a great meet-up spot. There is even a stage where you'll probably find local performers playing on any given evening. The atmosphere is always homey and laid back which is always a nice change of pace. read more

I don't think I have ever been so disrespected in my life, much less as a paying customer at a restaurant. We were told when we arrived that this establishment closed at 9, but we could stay so long as we were eating. We decided to stay because it was my friend's birthday, and all she wanted was crawfish. Collectively, we spent $500. However, TWENTY MINUTES before closing we were literally verbally assaulted by multiple employees. The manager (who was openly carrying a weapon) told us that we were not "so entitled" to stay and that $500 would not "make or break" them. When we politely responded that we were told we could stay by another employee, the manager began yelling at us and called us all liars. When the other employee confessed that he did in fact tell us this, the manager condescendingly apologized to us, then sent security to tell us to leave again, then had to pull his 14 year old son away from the table because he was literally yelling at us and getting in our faces. This all sounds too ridiculous to be true, but I assure this is exactly what happened. And again, all of this occurred TWENTY MINUTES before they actually closed. I usually order it with potatoes and cajun sausage. We ( my boyfriend and I) spent the better part of the week down in New Orleans for Mardi Gras and tried crawfish for the first time in the French quarter and we liked it a lot. So on our way back to north Iowa we decided to stop and get one last crawfish fix. I found this place on yelp and we stopped. So glad we did. This crawfish blew the other out of the water. Delicious! We went back and ordered more they were so good. I also ordered some tamales and some potatoes which were great as well. The vibe is very casual and the look Of the place is kind of what you would expect for a seafood place. The guys up front were very nice and added to the experience.
