He made what could have been stressful feel pretty straightforward. He also has great relationships with local supply houses, which made selecting materials a lot easier and less overwhelming. I had a few ideas that weren't exactly standard, and instead of pushing me toward something more typical, he found ways to make them work. What really stood out was the follow-through. Even after the project wrapped, Tony stayed in touch and connected me with his carpenter to add glass to my cabinets, which turned out great. Overall, just a smooth process with a lot of attention to detail. Really happy with how everything came together.

We had rooms and rooms of molding that couldn't be found anymore. Steve did lots of research for us and we came up with solutions that match so close you wouldn't know they were not built at the same time. We had to stay within the guidelines of the historical society and Steve's knowledge of those guidelines and made our home still look like it was built 80 years ago with upgrades of course. He has basically destroyed my confidence in my home. I am currently in the process of gathering estimates to correct 10s of thousands of dollars of poor workmanship that does not follow accepted trade practices. Had a window consultant, a licenced glazing and general building contractor out to look at the windows. Result? All windows need pulled out, framing fixed, and reinstalled correctly. SJB also installed a window in my son's bedroom that violates fire egress code. The window only opens 18". Minimum is 20". So I need a new window there now. I have told Steve about the windows. He is ignoring me. Steve's only response to my concerns was to ask for more money, for me to sign a gag order so that I cannot review him, and to exempt him from any liability. Not. a. chance. I have attached pictures of Steve's attempt to ask me for more money and to relinquish all of my rights. Is this why I have posted the first bad review? Have others signed their rights away to make Steve go away? Not me. Steve claims I am grading "unfinished work". Tile, floors, and windows are straightened out later at the end of project? Right. So he was going to pull baseboards off and pull the planks out of the drywall? Then put the baseboards back on? He was going to magically correct the tile work? He was going to correct the window framing with the windows completely installed and all finishes complete? Makes sense. If you are reading this and had SJB do any work at your home in the past, I HIGHLY recommend inspecting the work. Also - often he said he is doing work for "free" or "part of the project". Be careful.

Ultimately I chose ADR because of my project manager Darrell who was easy to work with, attentive to my needs, paid attention to details, and provided helpful tips and suggestions throughout the experience. For example, he had suggested MSI and Reece Bath & Kitchen to help select materials, and I was able to buy products from Reece Bath & Kitchen that were priced lower than if I bought them from big box stores. I had a very specific vision with choosing the materials, updating the layout, and paying attention to the details -- and Darrell made sure everything turned out right. His crew was very professional and did an excellent job with taking care of the details in the renovation project. I was most impressed when they laid down thick cardboard on the floor to prevent any scratching during the construction. They really take care of their clients. I would recommend Tate & Son Construction to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, professional,…read morecustomer-focused contractor in the San Diego area. I worked at Tate & Son for 14 months and had the chance to see the company from several angles. I began by helping with financial reporting, then started going on job walks with Shawn Tate, the owner and general contractor. From there, I took over estimates and later became the office manager. Because of that, I saw what happens behind the scenes before, during, and after a remodel. One of the biggest things I learned is how much a great general contractor matters. Shawn is not just someone who manages a schedule. He works with customers to understand what they want, helps think through the design and practical details, coordinates with the specific trades, and keeps projects moving as professionally and efficiently as possible. He also knows how to communicate with architects, city offices, homeowners, and crews, which is especially valuable when a project involves permits, design questions, or unexpected issues. Shawn has decades of construction experience, and his knowledge is incredible. He understands kitchens, bathrooms, room additions, and remodeling work at a level that is rare. Beyond that, he is kind, fair, and very focused on making sure customers are happy with the end result. I retired at the end of June, and Diana, who is very capable, took over my responsibilities. Diana and Shawn make a great team, and I believe their partnership helps ensure project success. I have seen how much Shawn cares about doing things the right way.
