I stopped by for a quick drive-through snack, Memphis Nachos with BBQ Chicken. I've never had them before and they were ok. I am a bit picky and I thought it'd be a safe bet. Meat was ok, but I found their baked beans to be very mediocre. I'd recommend that Cox Bros offer their pineapple coleslaw as a substitute for the beans. It would lighten the dish and make it much more enjoyable for the summer months when beans, meat, and cheese is a just heavy and hot. I'd probably also get it with no cheese. Idk if they use mozzarella or if it was a jack cheddar mix, but the first few bites gave me a pizza vibe, which is not great when you're expecting barbecue. I always love hitting up BBQ joints when travelling outside of Kansas City, so i knew I had to check out Cox Bros. when a buddy and I went to Manhattan for a concert last weekend. I don't know how long this place has been in business because when I asked the cashier he had no idea, but did tell me that it is no longer owned by the Cox family. Whoever owns it is doing a respectable job at delivering up a quality product for the northern Flint Hills. I ordered the 3 meat platter that included 2 sides. Way too much food for one person! I went with the Texas Sausage, St. Louis style ribs, and Smoke Stack (their version of burnt ends); and baked beans and Sidewinder cheese fries and 4 sauces on the side. I love that they don't use the term "burnt ends" as many places do when they are not actually selling true burnt ends. All 3 meats were smoked well, tender, and plentiful. The fries were spiral sliced potatoes and loaded with everything in the kitchen - a meal in itself. The beans were very flavorful but were mushy, like they had been sitting in a cooker way too long - my only criticism of the experience. For $18.50 it was a bargain, yet way too much for someone from out of town that was unable to take a doggy bag. Although not breaking my top tier for BBQ I've had outside KC, it was a solid offering and would eagerly return anytime life brings me back to MHK in the future. read more

I keep trying to give this place a chance, but every time it fails to impress. The sides such as the Seasoned Fries and Mac and Cheese are decent, but the meat always comes out horrible. The Sausage is constantly over cooked and dry, but yet is cold by the time you get it to your table. The Brisket is super bland. It has no smokey flavor and I can't even taste any seasonings on it. Super disappointing. The Pulled Pork is the same way, bland and flavorless. And just like the Sausage, the Brisket and Pulled Pork come out cold constantly. Very disappointed and some of the worst BBQ I've had in a long time. Next to no smoke flavor on any of the meat. Everything was bland. Solid BBQ joint! The smokestack is the best of both worlds with burnt ends of both pork and brisket and is super smokey and moist. The mac and jack is delicious homemade mac and cheese! Its made of monterey jack cheese sauce with a tasty seasoning on top made me almost forget I had a sandwich waiting. Smoked turkey sandwich was moist and tasty with cheesy corn, a creamed corn with cheese and seasoning. You can add on your own onions, peppers and pickles here as well. It's a western barbecue ambiance inside. The food is average BBQ, hard to compare when you've had KC BBQ. The staff was very kind.

Food was hot and freshly made. Restaurant was filthy!! Almost 95% of tables needed to be cleared and cleaned off. This was at 1:00 pm and I realize they probably had a large lunch crowd however, my wife went to ask for a to-go cup and lid and mentioned there weren't any clean tables and the answer: "we are busy!" They were all literally standing around in the kitchen. And on top of that, she used a snarky tone with her reply! I love to support a local non-chain restaurant but y'all need to get your act together. And you need to purchase some new drink ware. Wow. What a restaurant. I am in Manhattan for the weekend to get off post and this restaurant was in walking distance from the hotel I'm staying at. It was recommended to me by the front desk worker and I love barbecue so it was totally obvious where I was eating tonight. I ordered the smoke stack plate with macaroni and cheese (wonderful seasoning!!) and fries and I was definitely not dissatisfied with the amount of food I got! This could have been shared but considering I was dining solo and it tasted amazing I couldn't stand the thought of leftovers. Everything was about 14$ including the beer and that is such a great price. Thank you for the wonderful meal! An excellent meal after eating at the DFAC and fast food every day for the past 6 months. The reason I'm giving this review and 3 stars. The reason for review is because I know they have good lean sliced brisket. The reason I'm not giving five stars is because I asked for lb of lean brisket, drove to hotel noticed it was fatty so I called manager for refund or what I asked for. He said he had lean brisket. So I assumed I was getting what I had received the first time I tried this bbq place. But that was not the case. Still not sliced lean brisket. I have fatty brisket. And a lb of it. If I made sandwiches it would be perfect. But I don't. The reason I even gave three stars was because the baked beans were really good, and the kc sweet jazz bbq sauce is pretty good. I got TWO SMALL chicken tenders in a big box that were overcooked and a small cup of mashed potatoes that had barely any potatoes and way too much gravy. UPDATE: What a surprise. I haven't eaten here in a while because I just didn't like the side dishes and the menu was so confusing. I was craving brisket and stopped by and was surprised to find that they have a brand new menu that addresses the gripes from my old review. The new menu is much easier to understand and has some great new sides. I ordered the cheesy corn and baked potato with my brisket and both were delicious, although the potato would be over the top if they'd cook them in the smoker with the brisket. They even added a bbq stuffed potato that I will try next time. The brisket was great as always. A/C is not as chilly, which is appreciated. Gotta add this place back into my weekly rotation now. Original review: Good barbecue, definitely the best in the area. Wish they'd diversify their side offerings a little more. Everything is sweet or fried or mayo-based. Charro-style beans like you'd get in Texas would be so much better than the over-sugared ones they serve. A smoked baked potato offering with brisket on top would be amazing if they had it. The only real problem with this restaurant is the temperature. It's always frigid in here no matter where you sit. They run the AC at 69F. My parents catered Cox Bros for a family luncheon. No lie: We're particular about our 'cue, living in Texas and all. Cox Bros cooks a mean BBQ - is it perfect? No. They could do with some more smoking and tender loving care, but it holds its own against Dickeys (not available where my folks live) for BBQ catering. Sides are where they really shine. Mac and cheese is made special with Jack...so it's Jack and Cheese. The potato salad is onion-free and mayo-based. The baked beans feature chopped meats of all types, from chicken to brisket. Nice touch. And nice leftover. They did an amazing job packaging everything for to-go. Plenty of shrink wrap so nothing spilled on the way to our venue. read more

I decided on the Carolina pulled pork BBQ with pineapple coleslaw and mac & cheese. Very flavorful sandwich and the mac and cheese was perfect! At the tables there are various choices of sauces you can choose from - Original, KC Sweet Jazz, Texas Sizzle, and Carolina Style. I preferred the Carolina style or Texas Sizzle with the Carolina pulled pork. The atmosphere was family friendly and has attractive decor to keep you gazing. I came in in the afternoon so I suspect this is why I didn't get a very good deal. I paid $15 for the brisket with two sides for one person. it was a few slices of brisket on a piece of us toasted white bread, and a little container of beans and another of mashed potatoes. I just didn't think it was a good value. I'd probably just get a lb of brisket next time for $24 and skip the sides, and keep it for a few days. the amount of food wouldn't make a guy happy for sure. The order: 1/3 pound of the brisket, 1/3 pound of the smoke stack, beans, and coleslaw. The verdict: Brisket was a 6/10. It wasn't bad, but it was way too lean! This is coming from someone who cuts the fat off of chicken breast. I'm not a grizzle sucking Texan like my friend Will, but I was expecting a little marbling. Texture was okay - fairly tender in spite of being dry. Smoked stack was a 7.8/10. Really good flavor, you could taste the smoke/hickory. I'll definitely order the smoked stack again. The beans and coleslaw were average, nothing really to complain about but nothing inspiring. On to the BBQ sauce. I thought I ordered one Texas sauce, and one original. Both sauces looked and tasted the same. With that said I'll withhold judgment for now, but whatever sauce is predominantly red in color was par at best. Worth it? For the price, I was expecting better. This is a place you go to when craving BBQ after watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on Food Network. Yes, I'm guilty. Like any BBQ places, it offers a variety of BBQ sauces for whatever your taste buds require. If you like something hot, you can definitely try some. Brisket was very good even without any sauce on it. That's how I usually like my BBQ meat. If it tastes good, why should you cover it up with sauces?! Since it was a weekday night, it was not crowded at all even during the normal dinner hours.
