In a steak house I figured you can't go wrong with the house steak. Turns out you can. Thin and overcooked. Mainly too tough to chew. No one was overjoyed with their meal. Smothered chicken was rated so-so. Chicken fingers and fries was an OK. I took home a slice of peanut butter pie. It was dense and heavy, more like fudge than pie. Me and my wife stopped in Friday around 8 o'clock to celebrate and wanted to go someplace close that we haven't been in a while. This has become a once a year steak tradition after we stopped attending a more expensive Toledo Steakhouse. While the atmosphere is fare less grand and more "comfortable", the food is still top quality. Feel free to dress comfortably and eat without pomp and circumstance. If you worry about the little people being loud or the "grands" talking to everyone it will be totally acceptable and you will still have a great steak. 4 stars b/c my meal was warm and not hot. Went here last month after the original restaurant we were going to had to close due to a pipe issue. Place was busy for a Wednesday night. Staff was super friendly and the food really hit home on all cylinders. Steak cooked perfectly and the sides were tasty. Grew up in Oregon and goin to Cousino's was always a treat. Drove down from Detroit to Toledo and found this gem of a restaurant. I wish SoCal had a restaurant this awesome, the ambiance is and makes you feel right at home! The service was impeccable and genuine, but a restaurant is all about the food! The food was GREAT! I'd have posted pics of our plates but we devoured them. I had the best 14 ounce Sirloin I have every had, I mean it, I made the mistake of asking for steak sauce, this darn steak didn't need it, it was seasoned and cooked to perfection. It was my birthday. Started out with water to drink. Took 15 minutes to get our salad (asked for tomato only but they added carrots) & rolls. Asked for more rolls with our meal so they would be hot but she dropped them off 10 minutes before. 45 minutes later we got our meal. House steak was good but the THIN slice of medium rare prime rib was barely pink and lukewarm along with a barely warm baked potato. My husbands mashed and onion rings were also barely warm. Sent the prime back and asked AGAIN for medium rare. Came out even worse and FULL of fat so that I could only actually eat the center of it. Took 2 bites and lost my appetite. Asked another waitress for the manager as our waitress was was lost most of the time. The manager came to the table very stern and not the least bit friendly. Explained the issues as he hunched down at the table with his hands on the table. I gently moved my steel plate to his hand so he could feel how cold it was. He very RUDELY told me not to touch him with the plate. Told me we do not serve prime rib medium rare but only medium. What?!?! Stood up, took the plate and said I'll take it off your bill. No. offer of a replacement or I'm sorry. The waitress stopped by and remarked that she did not know she could not offer medium rare prime! As a waitress THAT is part of your job to know the menu. Said she felt bad and did I want some pudding? Seriously? An expensive steak house and you have pudding for dessert? Ridiculous! To top it all off, if you use your credit card they will add an additional 3% to your bill! This restaurant has always been our go to for special occasions but I am not the only one that thinks the place has gone downhill! I will NOT go back there again! Just went here and loved everything we got. We started with a glass of wine while we waited for our table. The place was packed she told us a half hour wait, it was not that long glad she sat us right away. Maybe 10 minute wait. Ordered the prime rib, casserole potatoes and salad. I got the house dressing so delicious. Our prime rib was cooked perfectly, just the way we asked. The casserole potatoes are out of this world. I could eat a 9 x 13 pan of those potatoes. It has been years since the last time I was in Cousino's. Not much has changed and sometimes, that is a good thing. Service was good, food was good, and prices were reasonable. Cousino's has been around for a long, long time and there is a reason for it. Not a great choice for a holiday. The traditional turkey dinner was served cold after being seated and waiting almost an hour to get drinks to our table. We had a large party of 11 and our waitress was wonderful. The restaurant had over 500 reservations that day and we were told the kitchen was doing their best. It was almost 2 hours after we were seated that our food was served, 45 minutes later we were asked to hurry along as the table was needed for another party that had been waiting over an hour! The service was amazing. The atmosphere was cozy, it included a fireplace and a nice sunroom and it is very relaxing and the food was delicious. They have a butcher on site 3 times a week that cuts and ages the steaks. The dinner salad was fresh and not like your typical bag salad most restaurants serve nowadays. We went out with another couple to this restaurant and I thought the drinks were reasonably priced but we did not get any. The waitress was attentive and the restaurant was clean and pleasant. I ordered the pecan crusted salmon with a baked potato. The potato was bland without any flavor and the salmon was drenched in a Carmel like sauce that pretty much ruined it and made it taste more like a sugary desert. I didn't complain .... Well I guess I am complaining right now but I didn't at the restaurant. We did not order any appetizers and had water to drink. Our bill was $89 and we left a $20 tip out of politeness but honestly, the only thing I liked were the rolls they brought out and my small side salad. Easily my favorite steakhouse in the city. This longtime Toledo favorite never fails to impress. Service is top notch. The dinner salad alone is impressive full of deliciousness like shaved carrots, beets, grape tomatoes, banana peppers and house made croutons. All dressings are house made also, I highly recommend blue cheese. Other sides are amazing as well; the freshest steamed broccoli and casserole potato are my favorites. Every steak I've had is top quality and juicy. Be sure to get it Pittsburgh style for no extra charge; a charred crust on the outside with a tender perfectly cooked inside. I've been eating at Cousino's since I was a child. I moved out of town and eat there once every few years. It looks the same and it should be updated (at least a little). The food has never disappointed me. I'd love to change the lighting. It was so dark that I needed the light on my phone to read the menu...but maybe I'm just getting old. I ordered chicken piccata without the capers and was told it's an 'as is' dish. I'm glad they told me that as it makes me wonder if it's frozen or prepared in bulk and just reheated. Went there for early dinner around 6pm, place looked pretty nice, but was very cold inside. Ordered Smothered Chicken, description was Sauteed mushrooms and onions, topped with melded provolone cheese. What they served was a pre-grilled chicken, cooled down, reheated on steel plate with pre-grilled mushrooms and onions topped with cheese. Chicken and the vegetables looked and tasted few days old. Mushroom was so black and mushy, it couldn't possibly been fresh nor cooked that day. The Potato casserole was nice and hot, but they put some cold mayo base gravy on top, combination was just not edible... Creamed spinach may had been nice at one time, but it was very salty, I can only guess how many days ago that was made and dried out to be served that salty. Place has great potential, but it is not managed at all day to day to serve food like they served me and to pre-cook, reheat serve food like fast food, charge over $30 a plate......quite disappointing. So if you must go there, order only items that are cooked to order, like fried food, salads, steaks, burgers... stay away from any chicken breasts, soups, desserts, anything that can be pre-cooked. read more

Cousino's location is quirky. Surrounded by a grocery store, some old industrial warehouses and a very hard to miss oil refinery, it's not the type of place you'd expect to find a decent, borderline "fine dining" restaurant. Heck, there is an adult video store within eyeshot of this Toledo institution. While the setting and atmosphere outside are strange, the inside tells a different story. As you enter, you'll notice the walls covered in amazing old photographs from the long history of Cousino owned restaurants. The decor is typical steak house, with eclectic tiffany style lamps, dark corners, booths and the like... it's standard, welcoming and comfortable. We went to Cousino's this afternoon after seeing a facebook post about their Sunday brunch, and we're sure glad we stopped by. The full menu was available, but we opted for the buffet. Talk about a satisfying plate of food! We arrived at 1pm, and even though the grub had been out for a couple of hours, things were hot and flavorful. The buffet has way more lunch / dinner options than breakfast, but everything goes well together. I opted to try everything, and enjoyed most options. The beef & gravy was divine and surprisingly went well with the eggs and sausage. The entire plate was over the top in the savory department, and after one plate I was so overwhelmed I couldn't make a second trip to try more. The pork chops were quite good, as was the mac & cheese but you can't really mess something like that up. The only mistake I made, was in ordering a side of fried pickles. Don't get me wrong, Cousino's hand cut pickles are REALLY good. But the spicy & piquant horseradish cocktail sauce was too much. I was overwhelmed with salty flavors. I'm a sucker for fried pickles and want to try Cousino's again under different circumstances.... say after a few stiff cocktails. Long story long, the buffet is solid. The staff was exceptional. The dressing, celery seed dressing is excellent and out steaks were prepared to perfection.

The prices here are ridiculous. I got a full order perch dinner was $28 and that consisted of 4 extremely small pieces of perch. I had to ask the waitress if this was for sure a full order and she said yes, a half order would have been two tiny pieces. The steak prices are comparable to Mancy's and trust me, this is not no Mancy's. On top of all this they charge you a 3% surcharge for using your debit card, yes you heard correctly, debit card NOT a credit card. Not in my lifetime (I'm 60) have I seen a restaurant charge you for using a debit card. They tried to tell me most restaurants do this whether it's a credit card or debit card. Ummmmm no they don't, your restaurant is the only one so far. This may be legal but it's greedy and shady. Not hard to believe, with past shading dealings with this restaurant owner seen in the local news. Needless to say we wont be back. read more

We returned to Cousino's for the first time since the whole pandemic thing. A lot has changed and not for the good. The 12 oz house steak has been raised to $20 now. I was okay with this until I received my salad in a small bowl, much smaller than the plate it used to be served on. On the salad plate was one dinner roll, they used to give a small plate of them separately and give more when asked. This time I asked for more dinner rolls and the waitress said they were .50 cents a piece extra. No thanks! My daughter got the 10 oz sirloin and chose the "4 cheese macaroni" for a $4 upcharge. Lets just say it was mainly noodles and hardly any sauce, in fact it had almost NO flavor at all. Totally not worth the upcharge. The French onion soup was very bland and hardly had any cheese on it. There were hardly any croutons inside and they were soggy not crisp like the old days. The soup used to be my favorite there. The steak was still very delicious but I am not happy about the changes and upcharges. Our server was awesome and very nice. Sadly, this east side tradition is a mere shadow of what it used to be and we will no longer dine there. read more

Inside, the place looks to be throwback to the 1980s and is in need of an update. The menu is pretty basic and could use an upgrade to include some items like sweet potato, brussel sprouts, and other items you would expect to see for a more contemporary steakhouse. I ordered the 9-oz filet along with a caesar salad and baked potato and my wife the salmon, tossed salad and asparagus for our main courses. I asked for anchovies and they don't carry them. The wine selection was very limited. Sadly, neither meal was up to the standards of the prices that the restaurant charges for these entrees. My filet lacked the sear and full flavor that such a cut of meat should have, and my wife's salmon was overcooked.
