I was kinda nervous about the burger because I'm a strictly "American Cheese " girl when it comes to a burger . They use a shredded cheddar. Honestly it have a great flavor all in all. The patty was a bit dry , but cooked well. I think If they are going to use shredded cheese, they should probably melt it a little. It was extremely messy trying to eat this hamburger with cold shredded cheese on top of it. But I would definitely go back again and probably try the chili cheese fries read more

When they were on the Denton Square, they were really very good. Took my family often. Then when they moved to Sunset, the kids and I continued to enjoy eating there. My Wife and I went for the first time to the new location, and we did not like it at all. The burger patties sit in a warmer, for no telling for how long, even though fresh ones are cooking on the grill. You don't get a fresh one. Did not eat my greasy fries. The beans were still good. The new place is rustic/nice, and the staff was very friendly. But the food is no where near what it used to be. We won't go back, sorry to say. It is not what it used to be by far. read more

We have been coming here for years. Since they moved to the new place, the quality of the food has greatly diminished. Buns are not hot. More often than not, the meat isn't either. They used to make your burger fresh when you walked in the door. Now it's like they made it hours ago. This is about the fourth time we've said, "Let's give them another chance." They put a mound of grated cheese on the burger which was awesome, but the Luke warm burger and Luke warm bun left the cheese cold and not to fun. This place is nostalgia for Denton folks. For new customers like me still pretty good. I heard from a native that this place was on the Square. I picture it would be a better outdoor look there. But once inside it's got that old school somewhere off a dirt road Texas look. The cheese burger was great. Melted cheese. With a side of fries. The fries were clumped and I don't think salted. I should have grabbed ketchup. Thankfully I also had a chicken fried steak (CFS) (I shared the meal). The gravy was amazing! I had enough to save for biscuits tomorrow. The white bread that came with it was meh. I think that's just part of the traditional plate but not needed. Not great. Back to the fries. I was able to make gravy fries. That needs to be on the menu. Finally while the CFS was great, I feel it should have been bigger, crisper, and thicker (wasn't hard to cut with a fork) for the price. read more

Good burger. The lady who works there is rude. Also, if you've waited in line to order, get to the front and say it's To Go they won't take your order until you pass by people getting their drinks, wait for other people to pay, order at the register and pay. Then you have no where to really wait so it feels like you're in people's way and awkward and takes a looong time to get your food. I'll just go to Burger Time Machine next time. I had wanted a really good old fashioned hamburger for quite a while. I remembered the place on Sunset St. but when I drove by, they were gone. Fortunately when I turned to go back to University I saw it and stopped immediately. So glad I did. I got exactly what I wanted and also asked for a taste of their chili as I like a chili burger occasionally. They gave me a sample and it was great. Twenty or so years ago, I would come here regularly after being introduced by a friend. I loved the food, and the atmosphere. It reminded me a lot of a place I would go eat with my best friend, when we were about 11 and living in Great Falls, MT. Even the fries taste the same. They still do, even today. Unfortunately, the rest of the warmth which that old square atmosphere provided is gone. As is customer service. As I walked in today, the new owner was standing in the way of the order window. No greeting, no "excuse me"...just sized me up, saw my earrings, and proceeded to ignore me, as he spoke to the old-timer in the cowboy hat, and chatted up the backwards-hat kid. That's cool. See ya on Yelp. I was one of three tables in the whole place. I overheard him telling old-timer the story of how he bought the place a few years back. I wonder if you have always sucked or just lately? Word of advice, greet your customers. Treat them with respect. Say excuse me, make them feel welcome. Leave your biases and assumptions at home. We made our first visit at about 5:30 p.m. last night. What's fun is that if you order the plate (rather than just a sandwich) you get unlimited fries and pinto beans. I got a chicken breast sandwich and the chicken was very tender and tasty. My hubby ordered the chicken fried steak plate - well, a true chicken fried steak is deep fried (hence the term "chicken fried"...) and this was a premade patty but hubby said it had a good taste. What he loved was being able to go back for the good fries! I really like the beans, too. Since it wasn't busy, we were able to sit and visit with our family members without feeling that we were hogging a table. We had a good time. One of the worst burgers I have ever had. No seasoning whatsoever and the patties were made ahead. Also "cheese fries" are a cup of cold shredded cheddar cheese to put on top of the fries after you serve them to yourself with their unlimited fries and beans buffet line, which are the only two things on the buffet. read more

When we first moved to Denton there was this place near our house called Denton Country Independent Hamburger Company. This place had a drive thru window we would stop at and order big cheeseburgers with enough cheese fries to feed a village for a really low price. We would return home and hoard our portions, making barn yard animal sounds as we devoured our food, content that we had not broken our tight college student budget. I haven't been here in years and I really can't tell you why! I don't know how I forgot about this place except it's a bit hidden on Sunset and I've been so focused on trying new places. This is a sin on my part as we like to support local and considering we haven't been here in over a decade, we definitely weren't doing that. DCIHC, do you accept my apology for being absent for a decade? When I see how few and old your reviews are, I feel like I personally betrayed you! This is a small mom and pop shop that serves an old fashioned hamburger. The menu is simple and traditional so there is nothing fancy, no fusion of flavors, no unique adventure, just a great traditional meal. In addition to different burgers, they have chicken, a chicken fried steak and several types of salads. As I said we had always gone through their drive thru to place a to go order so last night was our first visit inside. When you walk in a sign points to go orders to the right, straight to the cashier, and everyone else will walk to the back and over to the right to place dine in orders. You have time to check the menu, you grab a tray, give the cook your burger orders, help yourself to the sides, soda fountain, a small selection of beer and wine, they have ice cream and cookies the size of your head. You pay at the register and sit down at roomy tables with rolls of paper towels and checked table cloths. While seated you will have plenty of time to peruse their vintage signs and old advertisements. A lot of places do this which is kind of nostalgic, if not a bit cluttered. Now let's discuss value, they raised the price of their burgers a quarter in 10 years so they aren't looking to screw you, let's get that straight. I find their burgers to be a good size, moist and that they are generous with the cheese and toppings. This is a large burger for $4.85-$5.25 depending on which one you order and a good value. If you want to make it a meal that will include baked beans, fries and a drink as well for a total of $10.25- $10.75. That's not even what makes it such an awesome value. It's the portions! To go/drive thru orders get such a large amount of the sides you can't help but feel like you are stealing from this place. Dine in? Dine in customers get all you can eat sides and free refills. That's an outstanding deal and I do not know of another restaurant that offers all you can eat sides unless it's a buffet. I haven't tried the beans yet but the fries are hand cut steak fries and have a little crisp to them. We ordered two cheeseburgers and split an order of enormous cheese fries. When you order it to go the cheese has been added and is already starting to melt. When you are dining in they give you a large container of shredded cheese as you are serving yourself. Neither of us could finish our meal. The food was a total of $15 and then we decided to add on drinks which are $2 each and much cheaper than at other places. The staff was very welcoming and friendly and we enjoyed our visit. We overheard them inform another couple who arrived after we sat down to eat that they close in 15 minutes which reminded me that this is a local place. Their hours are basically 11am-8pm but some days have a variation and I respect that. We left about 6 min to close and as we sat in the car letting it warm up on an icy night, I saw that they locked the doors at closing but allowed the other couple to remain inside finishing their meal while they cleaned up. That's service no one should expect but definitely appreciate when a business is willing to allow you to stay after close. This place is local, their portions are large enough to ease the budget of students and large families who want a treat without breaking the bank, and how they run their business is the most unique thing about them. I feel welcome here and that I'm getting a good deal from a family run, friendly staff. I don't suspect them of random upcharges and money grubbing behavior like other places. Sometimes I want something new and fancy when I eat out but other times I want just a burger and fries and a good deal that I searched for when I was young. This is one of the worst hamburgers I've ever had. We should have halted the order when it was obvious the meat was sitting around waiting to be slapped on a bun. Needless to say it was overcooked, dry, and tasteless, somewhat reminiscent of a hockey puck.The grated cheddar cheese was piled high, not melted, I guess to disguise the pitiful patty. The bun fell apart so it was impossible to pick up and eat. There are beer signs all over the walls but, alas, if you want a beer with your burger you have to walk across the parking lot and buy one next door. Seen a lot of praise heaped on this place, so it was time to give it a try. Very unassuming spot, clearly a favorite of long-time locals, and it has an old-Texas vibe. Not many burger choices - Old Fashioned, Cheeseburger, Chili Burger and Hickory Burger. You order at a little window, and by the time you plate your self-serve, all-you-can eat frie and beans, the burger is on your tray. Move on down for your drink and to the register and then find a seat. The burgers were piled with shredded cheddar cheese, and the chili burger was covered in chili. We got a chili burger and cheeseburger, and each needed a spoon to dig our way to the burgers, so we could pick them up. The beans had a lot of flavor, a bit peppery and chunks of bacon, the fries looked great, but really lacked seasoning - and I rarely salt anything. The burger toppings were good, the chili was good, but the patty - while sizeable, was very plain. I'm guessing, by as quickly as the burgers were served, that they are pre-grilled, and sit in a warmer and steam out a lot of their flavor. The price was good, especially for the amount of food, but once you've tried some of the other burgers in North Texas, I don't see how you honestly rate this about a "3" read more
