The sign outside says "Voted Best Breakfast" in Redding or words to that effect and that's the main reason why we decided to give it a try. They place looked a little tired,the decor was less than charming, and most of the clientele looked to be ancient. We were seated in a corner in a makeshift booth that resembled a sort of bullpen. The waitress was ok but she didn't seem to be particularly enthusiastic in any way. Maybe she was used to waiting on regulars? We ordered omlettes and hash browns; my mom ordered bacon and eggs over hard. The food took a little while but when it came it was pretty disappointing. The omlettes were so-so, the hash browns were greasy and the food had a less than fresh quality to it. It was also pricey for what they give you. The toast is bread baked on the premises, but it was burnt dry and dense. We hardly touched it. I paid the check at the cash register and got a firsthand look at the cinnamon rolls alluded to by more favorable reviews. They looked big and heavy, and they were being frosted by the cashier in between handling money. That was a little unsettling. Needless to say we won't be coming back here. Our vote would be for another place to eat breakfast, not this one! read more

We LOVE The Country Kitchen. Our family has been going there for years. It always feels like home. They welcome us by name and are always happy to seat us wherever we prefer. The food has always been consistently yummy. I love the house made soups and the breads and pastries are to die for! I appreciate that the food isn't processed and is made from scratch each day. The specials are always fun and delicious, had pumpkin pie pancakes just the other day with a cream cheese drizzle, fantastic! The owner is lovely and the staff is friendly and efficient. We came here on a Saturday afternoon for a late brunch. I'm not much of a breakfast food person, so I was a little weary about coming here. The waitress seemed nice and attentive. I ordered the hot pastrami sandwich (their own baked bread, pastrami, cole slaw and the sauce) with the Mediterranean potato salad which was both suggested by the waitress. The Mediterranean potato salad I could do without, but the sandwich was absolutely amazing. Loved every bite of it. So anyone trying this place out, I would definitely suggest the hot pastrami sandwich. :) read more

The food used to be amazing and the service top notch. Not any longer. Last two times I've been there we had horrible service and sub par food. First off, they need to learn that service is what makes or breaks your business. At this place, the hostess doesn't know how to make a waiting list, waitresses will argue with you about whether the cook can make your food omitting oil/butter even if you say "he does it for me all the time" AND food took an hour to get to us on a Wednesday, late morning with a normal amount of business. When it finally arrived, mine was made wrong and my nephew was missing a sausage link. Waitress said she lost it on way to table...I noticed she failed to mention it first. Add to that the lack of consistency in food product... Good luck on ordering a cappucino/espresso, etc. They only make lattes, served in rootbeer mugs, despite what you ordered. Food was fair, unsanitary service. We haven't been to Country Kitchen in years (wasn't very good back then) so thought we would try it again. Service was slow, food bland to fair, but the worst thing was I wanted a refill on my ice tea. The waitress took my glass to the back (the glass was empty except for ice) I had already put my Splenda in the glass and I had an extra long straw in the glass. The waitress brought the glass back after a couple of minutes, the glass was only half full, and I took a drink, it was not sweet. I looked at the straw and it was a short straw. I'm sure the waitress left my glass in the back, couldn't find it, then filled the closest dirty glass, then brought it to me. Gross. I have been a pretty regular customer at the Country Kitchen for over 14yrs. Today was my last time. I don't know why but it is not the same place. The service is consistently poor to mediocre. It used to be very good. The food is not longer consistent. The portions are no longer consistent. It seems as if quality control is a thing of the past. Country Kitchen has always had great homemade wheat bread/toast. It still does but the size is pathetic. Each slice is about the size of two saltine crackers side by side. Normally you get 4 pieces. Today I got two. When I asked why two I was told that the baker made the loaf a bit bigger than normal so they only gave me two. They were in fact bigger but still not as big as in the past and then, you still got 4. It just seems that there has been a decline in their effort to be a great place to eat. It's as if they are penny pinching. So..... I've given them the benefit of the doubt but after four disappointing meals, I'm done. Not sure where I'm going in the future but it won't be my old favorite again, that is for sure. read more

On multiple visits to CK, I have always found the staff here to be well-trained and helpful, and I love the fact that many of them have worked here for a long time and know their customers by name. I am one of a group of retirees that meet here once a month. The waitresses are very accommodating (important because the size of the group varies from month to month). The food is good. Some of us love, love the bread pudding! The dining rooms have recently been redecorated giving them a brighter look. As stated before, the bathrooms are clean. Stopped in for breakfast and after asking for a recommendation, ordered the giant cinnamon roll. Received the best cinnamon roll I've ever had! Too big to finish. Highly recommend! We had brunch on St, Patty's Day. The light green-tinted whipped butter turned a dark color on the French Toast. It all tasted delicious though my tongue had a green tinge later. I took a dessert order home for later. OMG- the Irish Bread Pudding with sauce was fabulous when re-heated tonight for special treat. I live in Redding, and have eaten there several times for Breakfast, and always enjoyed it. So today is my birthday, and my parents wanted me to suggest where to go. I thought a home type meal would be great. I check the menu on-line before, and knew what I wanted. So the 4 of us show up. And I got the Chinese Chicken Salad. Just disappointed. I have had Chinese Chicken Salads, and this one was a joke. I never had tomatoes or red bell peppers on a Chinese salad. I looked for the Mandarin Oranges, but only a couple if that. I was looking forward to a large beautiful salad, with cabbage, greens, oranges almonds, and a rich dressing... but was more like a regular salad, throw some almond slices in, and the asian dressing, and the chicken, pieces, were tough, and had to cut them up... anyways, I would suggest, having a Chinese salad elsewhere, like Applebee's for example.. I'm so very disappointed in Country Kitchen. I remember going there so many times over the years and have had great experiences. I went in there with my friend on the 28th and had an omelette that was actually really good however the service was awful. When they asked if we needed anything else my friend and I were like...well..we would like our order taken? This is after a good half an hour waiting. I saw a lady ordering around other servers while she chatted with a table of customers for awhile. Today? Wow...no different but actually worse! We waited for an hour and were told by our server "Just a few more minutes" a couple of times...even given a very large cinnamon roll for free to share...but we finally got up and offered to buy our drinks but asked to cancel our order. We heard one cook was out sick, one didn't know what he or she was doing and so it was on the one that was left. Our food she didn't think was close to being ready but strangely the restaurant had cleared out and there were only a couple of tables (supposedly) that were still waiting. I brought up last Saturday and she apologized again. We went somewhere else but of course over an hour later..we were starving and irritated we had to start the process of going to a restaurant all over again! Now we can be patient and understanding people if we are told from the get go what is going on, not lied to that our food would be there any minute, etc...just tell us what's going on. Not once did a manager come to our table and apologize or explain what was going on. We had to go to her when we were canceling our meal (and I'm not sure she was the manager?!). We appreciate the meal is freshly cooked and so forth but an hour? Really? Um...I don't think so. I have read several of the reviews on here tonight and the business owner seems to respond with the same thing..."i'm sorry..we are busy...we cook things fresh...." same ole same ole...well guess what? It isn't working for you with all the complaints on here so one may want to start figuring out how to fix it before there is no longer a Country Kitchen! We are regulars here...always great food. Always great service from Amber when she's serving along with the majority of the other girls! BUT...always that BUT! Can't say that for Kim since the last time I was in she gave me my delicious cup of dark roast coffee annndddd never came back for 20 minutes...took another couples order that came in after me, didnt refill coffee.... didn't do ANYTHING really! I ran out of time and needed to leave for an appointment. PLUS the restaurant wasn't even busy! I had to go up to the counter and give her my cup of coffee and offer to pay for it, she didn't let me pay but this still didn't get me the awsome pumpkin pancakes I was sooo wanting along with a full stomach. I want to give a 5 star because usually it is but when you get that bad apple... that ruins it for all the others...so I can't. Another thing I dislike.... I deleted the word hate and put dislike but really I do HATE cigarette smoke smell coming from my waitress and that's what you get when you have Kim waiting on you... sorry had to say it. It's dirty to me. Other than this episode our breakfasts usually aren't like this at County Kitchen ... you just have to have the right server. Everything about this place made me quite upset. We called in our order for half a waffle and strawberries,with whip. We arrive and are told they don't sell waffles by the half and are out of strawberries, at this point I'm ready to leave but we were buying breakfast for a close friend, so I dont really understand why no one could call us back and inform us about everything but they chose to wait until I arrived. We decide to get blueberries instead,with whip and they then go and make the waffle, this entire time so far has been close to twenty minutes so far and was operating so slow customers behind us who they wouldn't even acknowledge just left money on the counter and left. They then come back and forget the soda I ordered with it and charge us exactly $10.84 for a cold waffle and then tried to charge us more for the blueberries. Needless to say for my first time coming to the awful place with absolutely no customer service at all I will never go there myself. read more

Decided to stop here breakfast . Pretty disappointing . We (2 of us) were sat at a table for six, the table with a long bench on one side and 3 chairs on the other located at the front of the business . This table should be taken out because when you are sat here it gives the feeling of "out of sight out of mind". Which is exactly how we felt. Our waitress was so detached from her job, didn't smile and said about 10 words to us the entire time. No, we did not leave a tip. Food was bland eggs were cold , gravy needed something, salt? Pepper? We received our toast half way through the meal and other than the coffee, it was the warmest food item served. The place needs an update bad! Sorry to say we will not be back. The hardest working most friendly person was the bus girl! Most of the waitresses were on break while we there! Worst restaurant EVER!!! The first time I dined at this place, I ordered eggs which came with country potatoes. The potatoes were EXTREMELY salty, which I mentioned to my waitress. Her response was, "No one has ever complained about them before." She did not offer me another order of the potatoes, and didn't even apologize. I decided to give them another try, because I had a hankerin' for a cinnamon roll, and I heard Country Kitchen's were the best in town. About half way through the roll, I bit into a very large piece of walnut shell. I told my waitress, and half heartedly apologized. She did not offer me a new one, or offer to take it off my bill. I left the restaurant and have not returned. Now for the service...it was HORRIBLE!!!! I was seated after waiting around for five minutes, and then pretty much ignored the rest of the time.
