Great place to get a quick meal when you don't feel like cooking! Food is always fresh and tasty!

I've lived in the immediate area for about 3 years and have been wanting to stop in and try this place. Unfortunately, it just slid under the radar for a while. I finally stopped in today after craving some seafood on my way back from running errands. I worked in restaurant kitchens all of my teen years, which partially consisted of deep frying all you can eat beer battered cod fish for crowded kitchens on the weekends. I'm a New Englander born and raised, I'm a foodie, blah blah so to put it lightly- I know my seafood. So now, the experience. This place went beyond expectations. Their price to portion ratio is absurd! My single fisherman platter came in 2 to-go boxes. There's no reason there should be this much seafood here! But I ain't complaining! Look at the photos, you'll see. The owner supplies the fresh seafood from Newport, RI and the massive sea scallops from New Bedford, MA. Though I have yet to try it their lobster roll and fry plate, it is around $25 which is pretty dang good for today's market. They said it had around a pound of lobster meat. Can't beat that. I bought 2 lobsters from Market Basket recently and it only made one sad lobster roll. Costs more too! Never mind the work and cleanup involved in doing it at home. Anyway, if you like traditional New England seafood, if you like a lot of food for your hard earned money, if you like quick and easy service, if you like locally supplied quality business practice, go here. We visited Country Chowder Shack after returning to this area from out of state. Our recollection was that the food was very good. My husband and I each had orders of clamcakes and chowder. My husband had the red chowder and I had the white. The white chowder was bland but after having several tastes of it, I realized it had a peculiar, unpleasant taste. There were a couple of clams in it which were rubbery. My husband's experience was similar but he thought that that it just lacked flavor. We each brought the left over chowder home. I threw mine out because I was concerned that it was spoiled. My husband tried to "doctor" his by adding seasoning but still could not eat it. The clamcakes were huge, gummy and lacking in clams. In retrospect, we should have returned the food to the counter. The service was good and food was served in a timely manner. The gentleman behind the counter was friendly and polite. In terms of ambiance, the picnic tables are located under cover so out of the bright sun which is a plus. read more

My family and I have been coming here for years. It was an amazing little spot to get seafood without having to venture to Newport, Narragansett, Charlestown, etc. I was anticipating an amazing meal. I was unaware that the original owners had sold and just thought they revamped their menu. I had high hopes, but I should have known. Firstly, I went on a Thursday close to 7pm. I was excited that they were open and couldn't wait to chow down. At this time there were only two other people waiting to get food. The server was not friendly and seemed irritated to take my order. I had asked about their "ultimate" lobster roll's price and was flabbergasted that it was $27. I opted not to get it and chose the scallops meal. When it was time to pay my total came to $53.85 and she "rounded it" to $54. It's not about the money per say, but was not given an explanation as to why there was a discrepancy. I would not recommend this establishment for the following reasons: -service is subpar to say the least. -Maryland Crab Cakes had an amazing taste and could have been wonderful if they were cooked fully. This would have been avoided had the cook made the crab cakes smaller. -the scallops meal was absolutely deplorable. Scallops were not fresh and smelt badly. It's almost like these were frozen and left to thaw out for a week and were used. The batter was way too thick and had no flavor. Weird crumb texture. I could not eat the batter and stopped eating the scallops after the two I tried in fear of food poisoning. Coleslaw was inedible. French fries were decent, could have been fried a little longer. -mozzarella sticks had a Smokey flavor which my child did not enjoy. To an adult palate you may enjoy this, but the presentation looked terrible that it turned away our appetite. The picture shows the presentation as given to us. -clam cakes were mostly all batter and little to no clams. Barely any flavor of a traditional clam cake. Full of grease. Crazy big! -clam chowder was the ONLY thing worth the trip. Both red and white were delicious. All in all, it seems the new owners are trying their best to create a new and improved menu introducing us to new flavors with seafood in the Scituate area. Their attempts are mediocre at best. After years of enjoying this establishment under previous owners I will remember it fondly. I will never recommend nor attend this establishment again. If you decide to check this spot out, which I implore you to at your own risk, stick with the clam chowder only and other non-seafood plates! read more

When the place was Howard's, the clam cakes were traditional and delicious. I am not sure what these are. They are big and the insides gummy, not fluffy and little to no flavor. Just awful. Worst calamari in 40 years. It should be a misdemeanor in RI to serve what they did. Had to tear off 3/4 of the greasy globs of breading to get to the tiny rings hiding underneath, and it wasn't worth the trouble. First time there. Really wanted it to be good. Restaurant quality food from a tiny seasonal clam shack ! Wonderful clam chowder, and seafood chowder. Fried whole belly clams, calamari and fish and chips. When they have the Lobster rolls they're stupendous! read more

My daughter and I headed over last night for fish and chips. The food was fresh and cooked to perfection. The portions are always generous, but they gave us even more as they thought we had to wait too long. It had not been too long at all. Especially for such great food. Wow! They packaged up my takeout nicely. That's what they got the 1 star for. Clam cakes are not suppose to be the size of tennis balls. If they were the proper size they still wouldn't have had enough clams. That's just being cheap. The bag should have told me how greasy they were. They were saturated. Fried clam roll with bellies was tasty and clean with a good portion, skip the lettuce. Red and white chowders were just horrible. Bad chowder recipes! Fish and chips had plentiful portion, but again super greasy and partly cooked batter. Obviously main problem is age of oil, and or wrong fryer temps. Prices what you would expect with price of seafood, but unfortunately I got screwed with very poorly cooked food, and a night in the porcelain throne. read more

The Chowder Shack is back! Hallelujah! Closed for a while now when the former owner retired; my parents just called to let me know that they were eating chowder and fritters at the Country Chowder Shack again! My faith is restored! This place was a gem and a huge loss to the surrounding area when it closed. As a borda Rhode Islanda growing up, this place was a fixture of my childhood. When the Chowder Shack was open you didn't have to drive all the way to the beach to get some decent seafood. My mom & dad assured me that the new owner got more than just the building, they got the recipes too. Chowda & frittas are as good as ever. I was thinking about heading home for Easter, but now I'll definitely make the trek from Philly to Northeastern CT. I'll update after I taste it for myself. read more

This place rocks! I love places like this - side of the highway type places that is. The chowder shack is only open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The chowder is fantastic. This is one of my all time favorite restaurants. Everytime I visit my uncle in Rhode Island this is always at the top of my list for places to eat. This is also my Grandmothers favorite restaurant for the red chowda and she is a culinary expert! My favorite dish is the calamari with hot peppers (which never makes it home because I inhale it on the drive to my families house). I also recommend the fried whole clam bellies, white chowda with clam cakes. It's a seasonal restaurant so catch them when they are open in the spring and summer. read more

Who knew a little chowder shack this good would exist *so far* inland (winking at you, Rhode Island). Their clam chowder is creamy dreamy good and the clam cakes are the bomb. Of course you're going to stop here in the summer when it's open, because you love seafood and they do right by it. read more

It is now Howards Chowder Shack. It is has been open all year and the food is better then ever. I had the clam cakes and white chowder. The cakes were light and filled with clams. The chowder was thick and also filled with clams. I talked with the owner and he has some great ideas for next year. He is into catering and I am glad the shack is back. Up here in the hinterlands we are blessed to have this seafood oasis in deer and turkey country. The food is always fresh and well prepared. Above all is the chowda, which seems to have been tweeked this year to raise it above its already triple A rating. Keep up the great work!! read more
