Fried flounder, blackeye beans, and ice cold french fries.
Nancy R.

Late lunch in Abilene at the Cotton Patch. Hubby and I both ordered their Flounder lunch special. The Flounder was fried golden, very tasty. Black Eyed Peas were flavorful, the french fries were ice cold. Restaurant has daily specials and they also have a children's menu. Friendly customer service.

Was passing thru and staying the night and searching for a place and saw on the menu "Jumbo Fried Mushrooms $7.49" and I was hooked! The Chicken Fried steak and two sides for $11.99 also had me heading out of the hotel room to the car and tracking the WAZE to get to The Cotton Patch Cafe asap! I had been to other location in other towns but not here and quite frankly not to one in about 8 years cuz I just haven't been near one. The outside of the restaurant looks the same as I remember. Inside was the same ? But a lot more BOOTHS than I remember other places having but I like booths so that's ok. As I opened the menu, knowing what I wanted the waitress stopped by the table for my drink order, I got sweet tea and put in my appetizer order for fried jumbo mushrooms with white peppered cream gravy instead of the ranch dressing. I KNOW. JUST TRY IT SOMETIME. It's so good with fried mushrooms. Then as I looked at the menu, my eye caught something highlighted in yellow, a 12oz Rib eye for just $19.99 with two sides, grilled to your liking. Hmmm. So o changed t that and ordered it med rare with baked potato and bacon green beans. The mushrooms came out first and were untouchable, they were so fresh and hot. Had to let them Cool just a little, then forked one, dipped it in my hot gravy & took a bite and the crunch on the outside of the tempura like batter coating it was amazing, the firm fresh mushroom inside was perfect, flavorful and juicy. So good. I almost devoured the whole order before my main came. My steak was a very nice size, cooked perfectly to my desired temperature. My baked potato was also perfect. With extra butter and sour cream. The green beans was very good. OH, and I almost forgot, they also have and "add-on" special on the menu: you can add. 4 large shrimp to any grilled entree, for only. $4! You can get them grilled or fried. I got 4 grilled. They were kinda. Cajun seasoned, which I didn't anticipate, but it was tasty. They came served in a separate dish on a bed of rice. There are a lot of changes to their menu. Some old favorites are gone now. But some great new dishes are on it now. Here is a NOTE: They DO still have free dinner rolls for the table but you have to ASK FOR THEM. They won't offer and otherwise they won't bring Them. I was told they were having too much waste and many weren't even eating them but once they are served they have to trash them so if you don't eat them you're good. But if you DO.... Now you know. With all this said I WISH we had a Cotton Patch where we live. In El Paso. We could use some competition for Cracker Barrel and some of those better prices in El Paso!! You won't go wrong a topping in here on a road trip!

Chicken Fried Steak with jalapeño gravy

When we entered we were greeted by the hostess who immediately sat us at our table. Not too busy when we got here, it took the waitress a minute to get us. Light music playing in the background. She took our drink order and appetizer order. Drinks came and cheese bites came out really fast. The waitress brought the bread to the table. I asked for honey butter for the bread, she offered cinnamon butter I said yes to the cinnamon butter but never got it. We had a fish and shrimp combo, chicken fried steak with corn and baked potato, chicken fried steak with jalapeño gravy on the side , green beans and a baked potato. Food came out pretty fast. Don't order gravy on the side, they short you quantity. The waiter who brought the food did bring another container of jalapeño gravy. Jalapeño gravy had a good flavor, chicken fried steak had a good taste just a little too much grease on the plate. Overall the food was decent. Green beans and corn were cold. Cheese bites were really good. Waitress wasn't the fastest but she did refill my drinks when I asked she was just slow. With the exception of forgetting the cinnamon butter it was a decent experience. I might eat here again but it will probably be a while. I added pictures to show the difference in gravy servings between on the food and on the side.

Grilled Cajun Duo with Squash Casserole and Mashed Taters

My love hate relationship with CP is currently on an upswing! Two day journey part one; lunch stop Abilene, Texas. Famished from a 7am breakfast in Oak Hill I needed rolls but seriously considered ordering the skillet cornbread too. Digging into my past I drummed up a comparison today. Black Eyed Pea dotted the landscape of Texas and a few surrounding states early 90's till now one last restaurant in DFW. Imagine 26 sides, brown gravy, fried sides available at your disposal. What they really excel at similar to BEP is vegetables. Best bites were was the squash casserole which was remarkably similar to an old friend. Perhaps better prepared than all previous CP visits in various towns. Mashed taters were good too. My Cajun Duo (Fish/Shrimp) tasted as usual while the GF downed the lunch portion chicken fried chicken. Seated in a back room next to a large group I was worried the service would be lacking; girl did her section proud handling all diners with ease.

Chicken Fried Brisket

I have eaten here quite a lot without many problems. I decided to give the fried brisket a try and this is what I was served. $16 for something my dog thought was beef jerky. Disgusting.

Chicken fried steak and fried mushrooms.

Casual. We sat at the bar and our bartender was amazing! He was funny and attentive despite being very busy! Service: The restaurant was so busy with diners even at 8:30 PM on a Saturday evening. I did not expect it to be this busy in my head. My husband and I sat at the bar since that was open seating and there were no sit down tables available inside or on the patio. The restaurant will add you to the waitlist if you'd like! Food: My husband and I shared the deviled eggs appetizer, and "the burger" with grilled jalapeños and pepper jack cheese. The deviled wggs (satan's huevos) were good, and spicy because we chose the "hellfire" option. The burger was huge! I'm glad my husband I split it because there was no way I'd finish that burger on my own! We both left content and not stuffed.

We looked at the menu online prior to coming and knew that we both wanted to try the cheese steak, so this was a bit of a bummer. They waitress who was very attentive told us that we can't order from the full menu for another 30 minutes so we decided to wait rather than leave. Listen, I get it the idea of having a different menu for brunch, but why not post it on your website and state the specific times for each menu? Also, what difference does 30 minutes make? They couldn't fire up the grill 30 minutes early? It wasn't very busy. Anyways, now for the good part: When we were finally allowed to order our sandwiches they were absolutely amazing. The steak was high quality and the gooey cheese had a ton of flavor. What wasn't amazing however was the bill. $20 for a sandwich and a small portion of fries in Abilene is absolute insanity. What's even crazier is we were charged extra for a side of ranch! I understand you get what you pay for, and there's no arguing the quality of the sandwich was top notch, but at the end of the day it's still just a sandwich. If you're good with dropping nearly $60 (including tip) on lunch, then this is your spot. For me, I'll take my business elsewhere.

I've seen more than a few places of this sort, most notably the Fuddrucker's chain in Houston. A predominantly burger menu with other options, sides, milkshakes, desserts, etc. where you order your meal at a counter, fill up your drink at a station, and sit at big wooden tables, and run your little buzzer back to pick up your food. They have a great vibe that really seems to fit the area, and it looked like there was a playground area where families could bring their kids for a good time. Prices are a bit higher than I'd like-- it cost me almost $18 for a burger, a side, and a drink-- but it was still worth a visit. The only reason that I didn't give them the full five stars is that the service was a bit slow. I was waiting surprisingly long for a burger considering how fast some other orders came out, and it took a while to track someone down to get a to go box for my leftover side.

I ordered the onion rings, the whole reason I came here, and they were made just like my favorite hotdog spot back home in NY. There are so many burgers to choose from, and I'll 100% be back to try the mushroom Swiss next. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. Our trays were picked up right away to give us more space, and someone was cleaning tables quickly after other guests finished their meals. Everything felt clean and well taken care of. I'm really glad I finally came here and I'll definitely be back.

Located on the second story of a beautiful building in downtown Abilene sits Grain Theory, a brewpub and coffee shop towering over the city. It is a mixed indoor-outdoor space with plenty of shaded outdoor and cooled indoor seating. Looking at their tap list, my girlfriend and I were impressed by their unique beers to try. I started with the Strawberry Peach Tonic (Fruited Hard Seltzer) and she had a Bella Rose (Rosé IPA). Both were served in cool glasses, with mine being tall and skinny and hers being almost like a wine glass. Shocking to nobody, mine was quite fruity while her Rosé IPA was hoppy with an underlying rosé flavor. Next, I ordered their Oktoberfest (German Märzen) and she had their Season's End (Belgian Dubbel). She described her drink as tasting like a Biscoff cookie. My Oktoberfest was quite malty, and I was a big fan. To close, we both ordered their Luscent (Belgian Table Beer) because small beers are back in fashion and I wanted to try it. It was obviously very light but still had a good flavor that was very bready. Nice and easy to close out our drinks with. They also have food and coffee that we didn't try, but the food looked sensational from what we saw others eating. They also have plenty of board games and card games to play while you're at the brewery and many beers available to take to-go. My only minor complaint is the lack of TVs in the brewery. Maybe it's a purposeful decision, but Texas Tech was playing football, and it would be a great place to watch the game. The bartenders are very friendly and willing to let you try and sample as many beers as you need to make your decision. Grain Theory feels like the kind of place every small Texas city wishes it had. I am very excited to come back here and try more beers, especially with how excellent the space is. RIYL: Cool-shaped beer glasses or a rooftop bar
