Been A few times before last night and the food is usually great. I went just to try the chicken fried bacon. It was great as was my chicken fried steak. My Aunt had the chicken and dumplings, which she said was very bland. My cousin had the tortilla soup and we both agreed it tasted like plain vegetable soup. Sometimes places are so bad, you don't know where to start....So I will start at the beginning. We were in a group of 9 adults, 3 kids, and Chad was our waiter. Some in our group had never been there before, and did not know they offered beer. When a party member asked for one (why they don't list them on their menu is beyond me) Chad replied, "oh, if you want beer you have to ask for it." Okkkay. Then it was time to order. He went around the table in order and when he got to the third gal, she was still unsure and said to come back to her. Instead, he said "well, I'm kind of going in order here..." Apparently, it would have been to hard for her to leave a blank space on his note pad for her and come back when she was ready. I ordered the "Wabbit Platter" which is a choice of five "vegetables." Vegetables=Sides in their book. That's fine. I ordered mine with a salad and Chad asked if I wanted the salad before hand or with the rest of the dinner and I said to just bring it out with the dinner and his response was, "oh good. That makes it easier for me." Alright. I thought I was your paying guest, and not a hassle. The food comes out and it's lacking a lot. My house salad was good, but the fried okra was either cooked too long or it was cooked in old oil that needed to be changed. The baked squash was tasteless and unrecognizable and the macaroni and cheese had the taste and texture of plastic. My husband said his hamburger was "soggy." I don't eat meat, but I am sure nobody has ever raved about a great, soggy burger. Chad waited until the last moment to really shine though. He collected our debit cards and placed ONE OF THEM IN HIS MOUTH. That is TOTALLY where it goes, right? I've worked in food service before, and yes, it can be a horrible job, but I was never rude or condescending to my customers, and I never stuck disrespected their personal property by sticking it in my pie hole....no matter how bad of a day I was having or how much I hated being there. There are plenty of other plenty of other places to dine in Abilene. Do yourself a favor and pass this place up. ***Update*** I did email Cotton Patch about our night and the manager called me today to apologize for our server's behavior and is sending us coupons for two free meals. The service is friendly and consistent and so is the food. When we come in we are greeted and sat promptly by the hostess. Servers are attentive and efficient. We love the chicken fried steak! It is fried just right and is not chewy or cheap like some places that you can tell are skimping. We like to come on Mondays when the CFS is $7.99! Whoever trains the servers here does a great job. Other places could take lessons. They are better than some 5 star restaurants I've been too. Food is awesome. Chicken fried steak is my go to here and I love the broccoli rice casserole! One thing that they do that I wish more restaurants would consider is half size portions. Been there twice now and even though it feels like an iHop with a western theme, the food is quite acceptable and the service is top notch. Got the veggie plate to go. Waiting, I tried to smell things cooking---nothing. So, guess it's just another restaurant that heats up what is made elsewhere and delivered to them. Everything was in a separate container that was bigger at the top than at the bottom. So, they only filled the containers half full, because, you know, they barely are making it. Everything was cold to luke-warm and the gravy on the potatoes was almost non-existent. The cheese, as usual for most places here, on the mac and cheese, was missing as well. The little mac in there was all loose and very unappetizing being dry and flavorless because of no cheese. It's not liquid gold. Try sometime to make it right. Dinner for two before a movie. Ribeye & chicken fried steak. The ribeye was ordered & cooked medium; decent flavor, the baked potato was still hard; seasonal veggies were good. Chicken fried steak was okay, much smaller than most Texas restaurants serve. The mashed potato's & green beans were cold not even room temp. Asked for extra gravy- not received. I've had some bad meals here and lately several very good ones. Service seems to have improved as well. Don't know if it's new management or what but it has improved a whole lot from a year or so ago. I'll go back. Their squash as a side dish is incredible. I have been going to the Cotton Patch Cafe for many years and have always been impressed with the amazingly awesome food and the outstanding service........until tonight. This review does not, however,concern the food......it was fabulously delicious as always. Did I mention that they grill the most incredible steaks? Well, they're better even than some of the steak places here in town! Tonight, for the first time ever, I feel the need to share my mom and my experience because in the past, the service was excellent. But, tonight, for the 1st time ever, I was pretty disappointed. It was a Thursday night and when Mom and I went, at 6:45pm, it was pretty empty so we were surprised when it took several minutes just to be seated. Once there, our waitress came and put our silverware,napkins, menus, and two empty plates on the table. It was a simple order;water and coke and we laughed it off when she got it confused. We then ordered our appetizer, with an extra dipping sauce and off she went. It was then we noticed that everyone around us had hot rolls and corn bread...... except us of course! We waited for another few minutes and were finally able to get her attention and she finally brought us our rolls. When the appetizer came, there was only one dipping sauce . That was the last time we saw her for some time! Not once did she come back to check on our drinks and mine was considerably watered down by that time. Getting our check took a considerable amount of time as well, as did getting a plastic cap for my dipping sauce.....I had to remind her no fewer than 4 times and it actually took longer to cash out than it did to finish our dinner! I'm not sure what happened tonight, all I know is that it was very different from the outstanding service we've come to know! And the food.......fabulous as always! read more

So wished they could make ice tea! We eat here about once a month and for the last several months the tea has gotten weaker and weaker. We keep thinking that someone there can make decent tea but it always comes out as basically weak colored water. It has no taste at all. We were there 2 weeks ago and asked our waitress why the tea is so weak and tasteless and she said no one seems to know how to get it right. She agreed that it's very weak tea but acted like she didn't know what to do about it. I looked around at everyone else's tea and it looks more like weak apple juice than tea. Hope management can figure out why the tea is so bad and correct it. Food is good but tea is bad. read more

Seriously! We come here periodically but haven't been in a while. We came in today and it is just nasty. It smells dirty...almost like the carpets haven't been cleaned in a long time. The staff is incredibly inept. I am not sure what is going on. I just watched a staff member treat a customer terribly. He acted like he was going to assault him! It was incredibly inappropriate and unprofessional. Our server was awful. He spilled a drink, broke the glass, disappeared. When he finally came back he brought a dry towel, never replaced the drinkz or silverware and didn't bother to try to clean up the floor. Food burned and incorrect. Really bad experience...too much to put here. I hope management sees this and addresses it. read more

Great experience! My fiance and I (and baby) decided to go to Cotton Patch. I went with the Double burger, my fiance the small portion chicken fried steak. When we received our meals we were very pleased, before I got into my burger I noticed there was just one patty on it. I politely mentioned it to our waitress and she promptly brought another patty out free of charge. It was super busy in the place but we had prompt service, didn't feel a bit rushed, and were treated with respect and gratitude. I eat here quite often. It has had its ups and downs; however it is now under new management and the last 3 or 4 months the food has been amazing. David Forbess the new manager personnaly greets everyone he possibly can and makes sure you are taken care of. You get more than you pay for; the wait staff is the friendliest in Abilene! I like this place. I appreciate that there is a different special for every day. The food is pretty good. They aren't, however, consistent. I typically go for lunch. Sometimes I'll get bread while I wait, other times I won't. Sometimes my kiddos will get Oreos with their meals, other times they won't. Best service I ever had by Lisa I came in awhile back and she was the nicest server although she sold me an appetizer that was so good that I would have never tried. Went in on Monday night with the family we had 4 adults and 2 children. One of the adults had not arrived yet but the rest of us was there. We sat for 20 mins just waiting to be seated, people were being seated before us and had arrived after us. No one ever told us anything. Finally I went up to ask what was taking so long and she said they were getting our table ready,I said I watched them already get the table ready, then she went on to say well we don't sit incomplete parties I was like we only have one person missing and I was just going to go ahead and order for her because something had come up, and very rudely she was like well we didn't know that I'm like you can't see that there's only one person missing didn't realize you wouldn't sit us if someone was not there. I understand if it was a bigger party and more missing but come on. We also had a 1 year old that was very cranky because she wAs hungry. I asked if she was the manger she said no and the manger came up to talk to me and was like we can sit you now. But the girl was still standing in the back mouthing and I'm sorry that's not ok. I'm like I don't think so. Very frustrating!! But we took our business to Skeets and had a great chicken fried steak and was seated right away!!! Real gravy not out of a package. Fork tender pot roast. Prices are very reasonable especially for the amount of food you get. Ask for James if you go Wednesday evening through Monday evening. Boy has this place gone downhill. I normally stop here on my way to Wichita Falls, and I did so yesterday. I ordered chicken fried chicken with garlic mashed potatoes and corn. When I received my order, the potatoes were stone cold and gluey. Apparently someone doesn't know how to make garlic mashed potatoes, because instead of having the garlic mixed into the potatoes, there was a bunch of garlic POWDER stuck on top of them. Basically they were inedible. The corn wasn't even close to warm. The chicken was great, as were the rolls, and the Dr. Pepper cake was wonderful, as always BUtT I also ordered a strawberry salad for dinner while I was staying in Wichita Falls for the night. When I opened the container, I discovered a "salad" that was made up of limp greens and soggy strawberries. I have to assume that the salads are pre-made then served, rather than making them fresh upon order. The greens shouldn't have been limp and strawberries mushy just by traveling 2 hours up the road. If it were made fresh, I don't believe that would have been the case. I couldn't eat it either, I ended up ordering a sandwich from Jason's and had it delivered to my room, so in addition to the $30 I spent in this restaurant, I paid an additional $15 for a sandwich from Jason's.. Overall, I'm very disappointed. This location used to have very good food, apparently something has happened, not for the better. read more

NEVER AGAIN!! This is the second time my husband and I have gotten food poisoning from this restaurant...and it's not the only one. Can Abilene get it together? It seems that every time we go to a restaurant, they give us the runs. We have been sick in Abilene since we moved here a year ago more than we have been in the past five previous years. The houses are filthy and I imagine that the people that work at these restaurants live in them, so they probably don't care to wash their hands after they go to the bathroom or keep the food at the right temperatures.
