    Sausage & stuffed potato
    Jess S.

The ladies who work there are very kind! They hustle and seem to work hard, all three I've met so far always have a smile on their face. The bbq beans are the best thing on the menu, if you like cowboy beans this is a great spot to grab some!! The meat stuffed potato was good but I was disappointed in the amount of salt I tasted, also would have like to be informed there was going to be cheese on my potato. Not a cheese fan & it was melted all over the brisket...... The brisket was moist which is great, nothing worse than dry brisket. The potato salad was lacking, we both kind of made a funny face at it. The bbq sauce was incredibly sweet, not our taste either. Husband had the $12 - 2 meat plate, pretty disappointed with the portion size, 1 spare rib & two slices of brisket cut in half. Did come with a scoop of potato salad & the beans in a separate container. The beans were the best part of the meal, coming from a man who doesn't do beans that's a huge compliment. Got a brisket burrito for my son, again little hefty on the salt, good amount of meat for the nearly $6 burrito. Disappointed in my container of ranch (that I paid extra for) was only half full, & the bbq sauce container for my husband's meat plate was about one thirtld the size of the ranch container. There was also only one container of bbq sauce, yet all three of us who ordered had brisket in our meal but 1 container of sauce. All in all our total was $29 but we could get twice as much at Betty Roses for that amount of money. I guess we are paying for the convenience of not having to drive into Abilene for bbq since reds and little pit closed down here in Clyde. Went last week and bought an 18 pack of Bud Light and a fountain drink and my total was $22. An 18 pack in Abilene at Wal-Mart cost $15. So again I guess we are paying out the nose for convenience. All in all it's okay, convenience is nice if you can afford it, and the staff & beans were fantastic!

DELICIOUS! I actually heard about this place from a Reddit post about places to stop on a road trip…read moreacross Texas and I'm so glad I listened! It's home cooked food, calories-not-monitored, but worth every single bite. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I knew it was going to be good when we saw the parking lot was overflowing into the grass. Luckily there was still an open table inside and we were welcomed by the sweetest staff and our waitress was just as wonderful. So many things looked good on the menu, but I couldn't resist ending this road trip with another taste of chicken fried steak to compare to Mary's (and they can definitely compete because it was AWESOME)! We also tried the chicken fried chicken (delicious), sweet potato casserole (amazing), Mae's potato casserole (tasty), cheese sticks (good), and the hamburger and fries which was obviously delicious enough that my picky daughter almost finished it - which says a LOT! We were very glad that we'd ordered the "smaller portions" for lunch because it meant we could grab a few of the desserts to go to snack on for our final leg of the road trip and keep enjoying at home. We tried the toffee cake (incredible), peanut butter cake (sinfully good), and the coconut pie (very light and creamy)! We also snagged some items to take home with us from their coolers and I can 100% recommend their pork tamales and summer sausage. If you get the chance to stop here, you won't regret it at all! Delicious, great service, and good portions!

Absolutely some of the best BBQ I've had in ages - and I'm a bbq snob from Kansas City!…read more We had the sampler (brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, pulled chicken, and one each of the mild and spicy sausages). I fully expected that one or two of the meats would be good and the rest just passable. I was wrong. Every single bite was spectacular. We also had the brisket and queso chips and pig candy - both were really tasty; the chips especially were very fresh and sprinkled with just a touch of bbq rub. We arrived a few minutes before they opened on a warm Saturday and the wait was about 75 minutes or so. Definitely worth standing in line for. There's ample outdoor (but covered) seating and plenty of good music playing, plus cornhole games if you're feeling competitive. Jays will be our go-to for BBQ the next time we're in Abilene! PS - if it's still available when you go, be sure to try the cherry chipotle sauce - it's amazing!

I ate at Jay's BBQ Shack and got there about 30 minutes after they opened. The line moved fast and…read moreI only waited around 15 minutes, which wasn't bad at all. They had fans going which helped a ton. We ordered Jay's sampler with potato salad, coleslaw, mac and cheese, plus a side of pinto beans and the pig candy. Everything was absolutely delicious. Honestly, this is the best BBQ I've had since moving here in 2023. The brisket was tender and full of flavor, the ribs were incredible, and the sausage was perfect. The potato salad had that mustard kick and reminded me of my grandma's, which is saying a lot. They had several sauces to choose from, the maple was my favorite. The only thing my husband mentioned was that he wished the beans had a little something extra like fat or onion, but that didn't take away from the meal at all. We'll definitely be back.

From the moment you arrive, it feels like you're out in the middle of nowhere--in the best way possible. The rustic atmosphere is incredible, and on the cool day we visited, they had a wood-burning fireplace going right in the middle of the dining room. It made the whole experience feel cozy and authentic. What really stood out, though, was the people. The service was absolutely top-notch from start to finish. I even had the chance to chat with a woman who's been working there for over 20 years--she shared some of the restaurant's history and how it's evolved over time, which made the visit even more special. For food, we started with the fried quail legs--perfectly cooked and seriously delicious (we could've easily eaten more). For the main course, I had the ribeye cooked medium rare, and it was spot on--full of flavor and didn't need a thing added. My wife went with the hamburger steak and loved it as well. Great food, even better people, and an atmosphere that's hard to beat. We'll definitely be back.

The ambience is fine; sortuv a rustic cabin feel. We've had great service the two times we went, and the table bread is wonderful. Not impressed with the thick, (cooked?) carpaccio or the overcooked brussel sprouts. Compared to the USA, it's a 3/5. But in Abilene? Maybe a 4/5.
