Coton and Rye is one of the few restaurants on the Landsdowne Resort grounds. Not sure if they consider this their dining destination establishment on property, but it can fit the bill, but also miss the mark. Their hours cater to only dinner time. Also, this is kind of like the sports bar if you are staying here. Before I get into service let's talk about the space. It is an interestingly set up space that attempts to jam a lot into it. There are obviously tables and a bar. In addition to that, there is a fireplace with seating around it and two areas that can accommodate different things. One having a high top family table, the other having two pool tables. Televisions adorn the walls for the sporting events. Then there is artwork and pieces on the wall. Check out the American flag that is from the War of 1812 era. Now, the service, this will be broken up a bit. We were immediately greeted and seated. Water was served and menus in hand. They were very attentive at the start. They came over and this is where I started to question the service. They went around the table and took the orders without any type of trouble. Their menu isn't large in the least. Few items in each category which makes it easy. Seeing Fish and Chips on the menu, I went with that. I stated this is what I wanted and the server asked me did I want chips or fries. I had to pause there for a minute and just stared at him. I said to him that the "chips" portion of the selection is fries. The server was adamant that "chips" meant potato chips. Again I stared, tried to explain again that chips are fries, it's a British dish. In the end, I just said fries. I couldn't understand how this wasn't something known by the staff. I was still a bit worried about my selection until it showed up at the table. It did come out as fish and chips (fries). I was at ease for a moment or two. However, it didn't hit the mark. The fish was a decent size. But the breading definitely did not stick. When I started to move the fish around on the plate and flipped it over, you could see that the breading was nonexistent. Which meant the fish fillet was directly fried, making it tough. The slaw served with this was lackluster. Mostly it was pretty bland, a big disappointment. The star of the show, toss up between the chips (fries) and tartar sauce. Definitely needed that tartar sauce to mask the missing breading. I'm sure if you come here while it is busy, the kitchen has been well greased, it would be a better experience than what I had. read more

I would say that while the restaurant has some upscale characteristics, the vibe is definitely casual. The restaurant offers a full bar and menu. The staff are great. I ordered flatbread with ceasar salad. I was disappointed with the flatbread. The flavors just did not come together for me. The salad was fresh. I forgot to ask them to hold the anchovies. I was able to eat around them. The drinks were good. However, I think their espresso Martini was the standout. It was not rich but creamy with the perfect kick of espresso. I would definitely drink at this restaurant again. I will have to look at their menu for other items I may like. read more

@ Landsdown Resort and Spa The low reviews are baffling because this is honestly the best restaurant at the hotel. This is my second visit at this resort and there's never been an issue. The menu is simple and consists of about 4 pages (2 for drinks + 2 for food), which is good for someone that doesn't want to be overwhelmed with too many options. **When in doubt, go with any of the sliders...and don't forget the dessert! Atmosphere: There's a cozy fire place, couches and chairs if you'd prefer a warmer scene instead of the bar area. There's also a pool table and several mounted TVs to enjoy. Food: served fast, piping hot, and delicious. Service: Great! Everyone -- the servers, the bartender, the manager -- will check on you often (without being a nuisance) to make sure you're fine. Food was very good. Good portions. I had the Miso Salmon and it was an 8/10. Ambiance 8/10 when I visited on a Saturday, late afternoon. It was laid back, there was nice music and plenty of seating for dining and lounging (many tv's to watch also). Service was good. Food came out pretty quickly. Not vegetarian friendly (hence 4 stars) and the dessert menu is lacking. Impressed with the mocktail menu, many options. Bonus: You can enjoy food and drinks in the lobby area near fireplaces or not (when I visited, there was a live pianist, she was very good). Overall enjoyable experience. read more

The service was fine (one girl was in training but the other guy was fantastic!!), good beer selection (on draft), a smaller menu - but still good food! I would go back for the sliders! read more

This is the "lobby bar" at the Landsdowne Resort. Check hours before coming here since they open later on the weekends(3:00pm) on Sundays. The staff was very friendly and apologetic if things ran behind. The management on the other hand, NOT too accommodating. She never came to talk to us about our issue. We had drinks and snacks. Their menu is limited and quite pricey. It's a resort so that's expected. Since one of us lives next door at the retirement village, she was given discount cards to use at Landsdowne Resort(rooms, restaurants, golf and spa). The card clearly states 15% discount at this restaurant/ bar. Although we pointed it out to the server he said that his "manager" at the the time(Sunday) said that she was only giving us a 10%discount. It's pennies in difference but it's the principle. If you are going to advertise a perk then why don't you abide by your own rules. They serve local Virginia wines and they charge $14-16 a glass. Flatbreads range in price from $14 on up as do other small plates. The food was ok, nothing to drool over. We got the Virginia BLT flatbread ($14). It was a good size. We also got these ridiculous Spicy Gougeres, puff pastry stuff with these andouille sausage that was literally too hot to eat. Taste your food before you serve it. This is a convenient place if you are staying at the hotel but honestly there are closer restaurants and bars with far better food and better management. read more

Why 5 stars? It's a combination oof decent food, classy ambiance, and free use of their pool tables and shuffleboard game. Kind of like a classy pub. It's a perfect place to bring a classy lady on an evening date. Most things on the menu are decent (I've tried about 50% of the menu) but the highlight is the Chicken Pot Pie. Food has become worse since the early opening. Its basically just hyped bar food. And $150 for a bottle of Stone Tower Hogback Mountain is twice retail and absurd. If you are staying there and want a beer and burger fine but I would not go out of your way. read more

It's not difficult to cook a nice piece of chicken to put on top pasta, but the thin slices of chicken were dry and tough as a boot. Completely inedible. The hotel option If your staying at the Landsdowne Resort, and don't want to leave the hotel, this is the place to go. Food was ok and very good. The chicken pot pie was excellent. The veggie pot pie was ok. Pub burgers were basic pub food, and edible to quash hunger, but not exciting. The flatbread pizza was good. Too bad it couldn't be individualized. I asked for it without mushrooms, and most were picked off of the pizza, but not all. I'm not allergic so it wasn't an issue, but something people should know. Nice drink menu with a bunch of local bourbons. Surprisingly, they didn't have any Virginia wines despite being in VA Wine country. read more

Had the Poutine and it was mediocre at best. Description was not what I was served. Battered fries were simply regular fries, melted cheese NOT cheese curds. Beef was pretty tough and the gravy was very salty. I've had poutine in many other establishments and this experience was was of the worst in my opinion. I had a great experience here. I was staying at the Lansdowne spa and had dinner at Coton and Rye. I made reservations earlier in the day. I asked for a table next to the fire pit and they delivered! I was there on a Thursday night, not very crowded and service was good. I ordered wings. They had BBQ, old bay, and buffalo. I got the BBQ and loved them. 10 for $15. Just came from my conference tired and hungry so I decided to go get something to eat at coton and rye. The place truly was amazing the staff was so great and attentive. I must say the fist thing that came to my attention was the great hospitality from the server and even the manager as well, even though it was a really busy hour she had the time to come and check with me like every 20 min. It doesn't get much better than Coton and Rye for a dinner on the road. Had a dinner meeting here during an industry conference and the food and atmosphere were excellent. We had the cornbread, the pigs in a blanket, and the Mac and Cheese as appetizers. I had the pot pie, billed as the restaurant's specialty, for dinner. My colleague had a flatbread. Every plate was clean at the end of the meal. And the server knew exactly the right pace for a couple of guys talking shop. Definitely will come back here the next time I'm in town! read more

We were worried because of the other bad reviews. However, the restaurant is great. The servers were prompt and really pleasant. The wine selection is pretty good. We tried the La Creama, Pinot Noir and the Arrowood Cabernet and they both were great. I ordered the Salmon which looked great and was delicious. Food is ... eh. But service-wise, this place does not have its act together. AT. ALL. Story: Our group pre-booked a reduced option menu because the Coton & Rye required that for our 16-seat table ... so you'd think that would allow them to prepare, behind the scenes, for efficient and gracious service. You'd also think, that for a potential alcohol bill like the one we represented, that there would have been a formal greeting and welcome to steward us into the evening. But NO. Our first course was "basket of bread" - that came out within an acceptable timeframe. AN HOUR LATER (bread long gone, crumbs and spent butter containers littering the table like we're at some abandoned diner) the soup/salad course arrived. Remember: these orders were off a two-option menu, so it wasn't like the kitchen was getting a lot of curveball orders -- it was a) a simple salad they can throw together, or b) FREAKING SOUP. ANOTHER 45 MINUTES LATER the entrees arrive. Many are cold. Multiple place settings are now missing forks or knives, the staff having cleared plates haphazardly. Crumbs and empty bread baskets, mind you, are still all over the table. At this point we have twice approached the host table to raise the issue of the slow service. The first time, we received a defensive set of excuses -- explanations that were understandable, though could have been managed around -- but zero hint of apology. The second time the person lashed out, "Well what would you like me to do?" WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO ADOPT THE MOST BASIC OF CUSTOMER SERVICE STANDARDS. Acknowledge the problem, apologize, make it right (comp a couple bottles of wine, take a course off the bill, give a special item to the table). That's all we are looking for, not your defensive attitude about a (possibly justifiable) shortfall in service. Bottom line: not worth the headache for a big event. Me and my girlfriend came to Lansdowne for a nice Saturday away. We were Resort guests for the Saturday night and that night we thought we might as well eat in the resort. The menu selection is slightly small but not overly so, I'm sure most can find something they would like. I would have liked to see more options but that's neither here or there. The largest issue with this outlet in the resort is the service. It was horrid. The host sat us at a table outside the actual restaurant because it is "loud". This is fine but the outside area is just a few tables set up in a section of the front lobby. It is open to everyone walking by and open to the front door even. This isn't anywhere close to luxury. As well, the host said we can choose our table from the many open ones. I can't stand when hosts say that, why would there be a host when we can just sit wherever. It is their job to seat us and make us feel welcome. However, the service from our waitress could be likened to a Waffle House. No welcome, no how was your day, no how has your stay been, no smile, no eye contact. This young lady really needs to understand how to interact with guests. A simple hello and smile would have been adequate. The literal only words she managed to get out were to just have us order. During the meal we were never checked up upon and our glasses were only refilled by asking. The absolute worst thing though is the large man with glasses who was carrying the trays of food up the stairs and into the restaurant, HE ATE FRIES OFF PEOPLES PLATES. Me and my girlfriend watched him eat fries as he walked and would be chewing in sight of guests. BUT when OUR food was about to be brought to our table, he set it on a large table so him and the host can bring our food over, THE MAN ATE FRIES OFF OF MY PLATE. We didn't say anything immediately but I wish we would have. That is unacceptable behavior and extremely rude and disgusting. Even if you're staying at the Lansdowne "Resort," avoid this place like the plague. It was 6:45 pm, Wednesday - place is basically empty, music blaring loudly from the cheap speakers. A waiter randomly comes up and seats me. I tell him that I have a reservation on OpenTable. He doesn't give a crap. Seats me and walks away. He comes back a few minutes later and I ask what the special flatbread of the day. He chuckles and says there ain't no special flatbread - it's all the same, all the time. So I order the cheesesteak egg rolls (big mistake) and the "short rib" stroganoff (even bigger mistake). No offer of water or bread. The cheesesteak egg rolls come out - they're cut in half and doused in the two sauces - mustard and some sweet and sour thing, and sprinkled with cilantro. Who puts cilantro in a cheesesteak egg roll? They do. Then before I'm finished with the "appetizer" - which really wasn't appetizing. The waiter brings out the short rib stroganoff saying that he needed to move my appetizer out of the way. This was a very weird dish. The noodles were superhot, steaming. The 4 pieces of short rib (which were room temperature) and several pieces of beets (which were a bit cooler than room temperature) - no where in the description of the dish did it ever say - temperature gradient wonderland experience. Bottom line - don't come here. Even if you're starving. read more

Overall the service is good and the cocktails are decent, albeit pricey. The food on the other hand is atrocious. It was near the end of the evening so maybe the kitchen was close to shutting down and the food wasn't a priority but it was really not good at all. We had the Chicken Skewers which appeared as pan fried dry chicken with some buffalo & bleu cheese sauce sprinkled on it. No taste at all. We also had the Chesapeake Blue Crab Dip which says it comes with "Rye Toast Points". That was just literally toasted rye bread and the dip was very plain. Finally, we had the Beef Sliders which had no taste. They tasted nothing like sliders. They tasted like meat nothing. Also beware because our server never warned us but parties of 8 automatically have gratuity added to the bill. You would think that at a hotel in a destination resort known for good service the main dining option here would have excellent service. Not the case. My party was celebrating my birthday at the resort over 4 days and ate here the first night. The service was impossibly slow for only a few patrons in the restaurant and the wait staff wasn't knowledgeable of the food preparation or ingredients. The chef tried to assist but wasn't very accommodating about changing menu items to account for dietary restrictions. The food when it arrived was good but for the price you pay you should get excellent service along with good food. read more
