No one enjoys going to the DMV. Failing the vision test for a driver's license renewal rendered it even less enjoyable than usual. Why did I fail the vision test, you may ask, because "renewal" suggests that I have been driving recently and indeed, that is true, I have been driving for many years, up to and including this one. Well. I failed because when I was getting ready to leave the house, I'd overdone it with the moisturizer, it was unseasonably warm, and the moisturizer had seeped into my eyes, so my vision was blurry. I asked the DMV employee (ahem, I say nothing, but I do wish this DMV employee and perhaps one or two or ten others engaged in a regular practice of meditation or some other reflective mindful practice that cued them into the miraculous oneness of consciousness and the mystic truth that when one is hurt, all will suffer) if I could go to my car, get a tissue to wipe my eyes, and try again. She responded so quickly it was as if she'd read my mind; truly I don't believe her brain could have processed language that quickly. She actually laughed out loud when she said no, then instructed me to visit an optometrist for a vision check, and thrust a sheaf of paperwork in my direction. This sheaf was for the optometrist to fill out to attest that, all evidence to the contrary, I am not visually impaired. At happy hour, over jalapeño margaritas, I mentioned to a friend that I needed to find an optometrist, and she recommended Costco. I made an appointment and there I went the following week. If you suspect that I was not in the best mood, why, you would be right. Not only from all the DMV shenanigans and the inconvenience of having to jump through even more hoops to renew my (already expired, if truth be told, don't judge, it was a rough year and I simply forgot) driver's license), but because even though I have a temporary disabled placard (don't ask) and walking was painful, there was not one disabled spot available. In fact, there were few parking spots at all. I don't know what made Costco so irresistible that Thursday mid-afternoon, but the parking lot was full of frazzled or enraged drivers squabbling over not even empty parking spots, but the prospect of parking spots that suggested the potential of emptiness. After driving over hell and gone, I found a distant spot and limped my way to the entrance, cursing all the while. However. At the optometry center, I was welcomed kindly, seen promptly, and the optometrist was the best I'd ever seen: cheerful, professional, courteous, happy to answer all my questions. You may be curious as to whether I passed the test. I did, although the optometrist suggested glasses for driving, just in case, because I have this peculiarity in my vision, in that I am rather nearsighted in one eye and rather farsighted in the other. Combined, I have 20/20 vision but, like a long married couple with complementary virtues and flaws, each eye demonstrates too much dependence on its partner. Off I went to the DMV, where I fell to the lot of a kindly DMV employee, who looked at my paperwork and handed me a temporary license. I was flummoxed. My visits was extremely pleasant, Dr Chou took the time to explain my vision health, her staff was efficient and friendly was in and out, after I received my prescription I went over to select my glasses, I was met by Jeffrey who was extremely friendly and efficient got me all taken care of with two sets of glasses of my choice. First of all, I got the best and most thorough exam by the new optometrist, Dr Monica Ramos. Young, energetic, caring and astute. All the girls in the office were friendly and helpful. Secondly, I've only had Costco fill my prescriptions, despite where I get the frames, and they do an excellent job. Price is right and most are helpful. Went to Costco Vision Center (Costco Optical) today to peruse their eyeglass frames for new frames. I was told I could not look at frames because I hadn't brought my Rx along with me. The employee was unyielding. Has Costco really become this anal, or was this just an employee having a bad day? There did appear to be an across-the-board staff change, as the regular helpful and friendly employees were not around. Hmmmm. There was also a new optometrist several days ago when my husband went in to get a new eyeglass prescription. The optometry staff and optometrist were very flustered and unsure of how to use their new computer program. The optometrist didn't get his prescription correct, necessitating a trip back today for Costco to verify that they correctly filled the Rx, and another trip tomorrow to actually see the optometrist again to correct the prescription and for me to bring along my prescription so maybe they'll let me look at frames. This all seems rather ridiculous and inefficient and wasteful of our time. The Costco mantra of "customer is king" was not apparent and was not in the air today. read more

I got the Hi index for my prescription (OD 5.00 and OS 7.00) and they are super light weight!! Can't even tell I'm THAT near sighted haha. Takes about 7 days to get your glasses from them with an automated call :) Not a huge selection but enough. They also have a little kid table with about 20 frames you can choose from. read more

Now I went to the counter and showed my prescription, girl asked me what do you want, I said glasses DUH, she knew absolutely NOTHING about the frames, I asked which type are more durable because Im hard on glasses for my work She said try a set on and see what ones feel more durable . Sometimes no one is there, other times it's take a number and start perusing the frames. That's what we did. Daughter took her time at the frames wall settling on a pair of their Kirkland brand instead of any of the designer glasses because they came out being better, style and fit considering. We had come directly from the eyeglass shop at Kaiser Marketplace and what we thought was a deal on a pair of designer frames there w our Kaiser Ins discount. At Costco, w my daughter preferring one of their frames at a lot less, the savings continued if we bought another pair with it, so daughter got two pairs, regular and sunglasses, again liking a Kirkland brand over anything else, w every protective lens feature there was ie high def, reflective, glare, polarized, scratch and who remembers what else automatically for $200. It was less than what we would have paid at the Kaiser store for only one pair w their supposed Ins discount. And I liked the way all we had to do was pick out the frames and our job was over. We got to sit and a very nice girl sat opposite us and asked my daughter questions and filled out the paperwork and poof we were done ordering glasses. I picked them up not too long after. That was a few months ago. Two days ago Hub got progressives, one pair in designer Titanium, the over Kirkland brand, regular and sunglasses, for $369 out the door, similar easy in, easy out, happy day experience. read more

I decided to write a separate review for the Costco Optical section of this specific Costco location, because it really is much different than the store around it, and therefore deserves a separate review. First off I LOVE this Costco...I love the location and everything about it, but the optical department leaves a lot to be desired. My main complaint is with the manager, or who I would assume is the manager. He's a middle aged gentleman who looks like he is on steroids and has about the right attitude to match. Every time I come into this location and get him to help me I feel like I am being grilled just buying my regular contacts. Because my prescription is not under my phone number he always gets all suspicious that I wont give him my phone number. I try explaining that its under my membership number but he ALWAYS has to try the phone number first. Then after he gets frustrated with the phone number search he finally scans my membership card and what do you know, he finds it right away. This last time I came in to get contacts apparently they didn't have my prescription in the computer, so he went through the last two years of purchases grilling me on why they "didn't have record" of me buying my daily contacts there. Seriously the guy is an ass. Today when I was in here buying contacts a woman purchased a box of contacts and went over to the mirror and was putting a pair on, when the guy comes over and gets all mad and tells her she needs to do it somewhere else because they could loose their license if she does that. Are you serious? Cant you be a little nicer to your customer? The only reason this location gets two stars is that the other team members seem to be nice and willing to help you without the attitude. But two out of three times when I come in I get the 'roid rage guy. Naw, I am all good with that...I can order my contacts somewhere else and go to this Costco just for their awesome car wash and 10 gallon tubs of mayo. :0) read more

First off, the optometrist here is fine. She's helped me since I was a teenager and she's great. But I'm gonna be honest, I don't even think half of the clerks know how glasses work. Or how to handle customers, because there's always a wait. I wouldn't recommend getting glasses here unless you're insanely desperate. I always wait forever and I've been insulted multiple times. Almost every time I visit, there is a line and the clerks take forever to do the simplest of tasks. I always wait so long even if there's only a customer or two ahead of me. I come in to quickly pick up a pack of contacts and they always go soooo slow. The lady behind the counter didn't even leave the counter. She called someone over to open the cabinet for her. And I had to wait for said person to come. Seriously, it's much more efficient for her to just have a key on hand! And on multiple occasions when there's been a line, I've seen a couple clerks just hanging around chatting. No, they were not working on any glasses or even at their computer. And twice now, TWICE, the clerks have insulted me and my assymetrical face. I get it, my ears are uneven, thank you for pointing it out. Once, a clerk asked if I was lying on my glasses because they were so crooked, and another time another clerk told me that my frames were no good because of how crooked they were. When I (politely) told her that my glasses were crooked because of my assymetrical ears, she condescendingly told me that glasses aren't supposed to be crooked. These clerks don't even know how glasses work! I stood there in absolute shock over what she said, because I could not believe someone so incompetent about glasses was even allowed to handle other people's glasses. Please, I implore everyone to not trust your vision to these people. You are better off asking a spider monkey for help. read more

I ordered 2 new pairs of eyeglasses today; one bifocal, one progressives. In addition, I also needed pricing for astigmatism daily contacts. My vision is not only terrible, it's also difficult & quite complex. Today, a wonderful young woman named Jordyn helped me. She was professional yet friendly. Extremely knowledgeable, as well as informative to me & patient with my repetitive questions due to my confusion from the 3 different visual aides/ prescriptions that my eye problem needs in order for me to see accurately, as most people can. My daughter has worn glasses for many years and has a different prescription for each eye. Her Dad took her to Costco for new glasses about 4 months ago. She recently broke her glasses and had to get a replacement pair. We went to a different eye doctor this time around and discovered that her lenses from Costco were way off and were the same lens for both eyes, which contributed to her headaches and eye fatigue. She got her new glasses at a reputable eye doctor and when she put them on she exclaimed,"Wow, I can see! Everything is so clear!" I would not recommend Costco Vision Center to ANYONE. read more

First of all I have to say that my whole family loves the Oxnard Costco, and the employees, as a whole, but why doesn't the general manager do something about the Optical Department? We have been members since 1989, and love Bill the door man, many of the clerks, and most of the people in the tire department, but why is the Optical Department so horrible? We have complained about the optical department manager, to the general manager, about his rudeness but it hasn't changed. If you have a rude manager how could that attitude not trickle down to the employees? There are several newer young people that work in there that seem very nice and helpful and obviously have not been tainted by the bad apples. Whenever we can now we will even go to either the Westlake or Simi Valley stores for optical items. It's too bad because as I mentioned, we love the Oxnard store overall. Costco, you are so customer oriented, why don't you listen to your customers about your optical department?! read more

My experience here was consistently frustrating. I'm helped by Matí and my frames are shipped off to the lab -- no muss or fuss. A few days later, I receive a call that the frames are broken. Apparently there were telltale signs that it was going to snap if manipulated, but Matí hadn't noticed. Neither had the lab techs. No problem. We're all human beings that make mistakes. I go back to the store. They tell me to bring in another pair that Costco will reimburse. I leave and buy another set the next day. I visit again. Apparently every single associate I talked to had forgotten to mention that they don't handle nylon frames. It would take some calls to the lab to check if they might accept the replacement. Matí said she would personally handle it. I leave again. I call her the next day. She forgot to follow up. She said she would contact the lab ASAP. I call again the following day. She was off until the upcoming week, and had not contacted anyone. Again. And she communicated my situation to no one else on the team. If anything goes wrong, expect to be thrown into an enormously inefficient mess. If given the choice, please take your business elsewhere. read more

*DO NOT have your eyes checked here. Initially it was pleasant visiting the first doctor. I thought my prescription was written correctly which it wasn't. I had to return 3 times and have my glasses remade twice. This location is very busy and the doctors are careless writing the scripts. When it comes to your eyes the doctors should take there time with you. I was told by both staff doctors the had to rush me through because they were backed up. Take my advice.... read more
