Pineapples, Aloha Mac chocolate-covered Macadamian nuts, Kauai Coffee, and a travel bag.... oh MY! We visited Hawaii for our 2018 summer family vacation, visiting the Big Island, Oahu, and Kauai. All were very nice and we had a great time. Before leaving we confirmed one Costco on the Big Island and Kauai and two on Oahu. We stocked up on snacks n such on the Big Island and they carried us through to Kauai, and we nibbled a few more snack bars on the flight home. ------------ So, on Kauai, we didn't need food for the room, but for home. The hotel recommended visiting Costco to check out the pineapples and the recommendation was good... they had many to pick from and no flies buzzing around them. Why do the flies matter? I confirmed on two visits the Agriculture desk/x-ray at the Lihue airport... you CAN take pineapples home, as long as they don't have flies buzzing all around... So we got pineapples for friends and for us... to peel with the puncher slicers we purchased on Oahu... after learning of them at the Polynesian Cultural Center (you can get them on the mainland, online, etc.). I don't remember the price, but the pineapples were not expensive... they were good and they were from Hawaii. ------------ Costco also had big boxes... 12-packs of Aloha Mac chocolate-covered macadamia nuts... and we got one of those. ------------ And while walking toward the register we learned of Kauai Coffee... they grow Kona coffee on the Garden Isle, too. We had visited a farm on the Big Island and liked it quite a bit... and then my wife discovered Kauai Coffee and liked it better. They had a couple flavors to pick from here at Costco and we since got some for us and for my mom for Christmas... it's good (no need for cream or sugar kind of good). ------------ Then, just as we were about to enter the register's lane to check out... my wonderful wife spotted them... awesome big cooler bags... JUST big enough to hold the 12-pack of macadamia nuts and all three pineapples... one carry-on bag for all these items... SCOORRRRRREEEEEE! And they made it on the flight from Lihue to LAX - fit in the overhead just right, and the overhead from LAX to STL... and the pineapples are long gone, but the bag we still use each week at Costco here at home! ------------ So we do recommend this Costco for any visit, especially the day before flying home... they have what you need for friends and family! read more

We couldn't avoid buying shredded squid, crispy shrimp cheeks (for our salad), salad bags from the produce section, fresh poke, manapua and my fav...PORTUGUESE SAUSAGE!!! Costco in Kauai is very similar to the mainland. One difference is the outdoor viewing area with a view. My wife and I ate here for under $4 before heading to the Luau across the street. It has everything you need and a bunch of stuff you don't but will end up buying anyway. Food prices are the same as the mainland and they offer gift cards for excursions at a discount. read more

Costco is a must stop at every Hawaii trip. It's a great place to pick up some eggs, juice, bread, etc if you are staying a few days. They have a yummy furikake snack mix that is so good, my family and friends devoured it in days. There are also Kauai coffee and cookies for a great price. Perfect for souvenirs and self indulging. The gas station is a block away from Costco, which is important and perfect for filling up before returning your rental car to the airport. read more

Awesome Costco! I love this one especially. They have a great selection of anything you need, and lots of browse worthy finds. You can also purchase alcohol at self checkout with the assistance of an employee, unlike grocery stores' self checkout. All the employees are very friendly and helpful. What's not to love about Costco? We stayed in Poipu for a week at a condo and bought a ton of food and drinks here. The prices here are about the same that they are on the mainland for most things, although certain items like milk and eggs were more expensive. They have pretty much anything you could want here to keep your place well stocked for your vacation. They also have a sushi and poke bar here which I haven't seen in any other Costco. We got some samples of different sushi rolls and they all tasted good. We also got a poke bowl which was tasty and reasonably priced. I definitely recommend coming here if you're planning on doing any cooking while staying on Kauai. They also have good prices on things like chocolate covered macadamia nuts if you want to bring something back home. read more

The food court manager (Heather) is the rudest person I've ever delt with. She has an attitude and yells at you if you ask for an extra side of mustard. Her manners are beyond rude and not expected. I've tried going there few times and got the same attitude every visit. They lost me as a customer for life. read more

The water at the Costco Food Court is great! There is a station that you can pour the amount of ice that you want (if any) and your water. I had a good experience. read more

This Costco has some good Hawaii only product(or at least I think it's only in Hawaii) like the sarongs and snacks. The sarongs are in a thousand different colors so even James got one for himself haha. We bought couple more for gifts. I think they are prefect because they are not expensive but they are good quality. We also got some snacks like rice puff and mochi. The only bad thing was we couldn't get their fresh poke for the day. We went up to the poke area and saw a lot of cocktail shrimp instead. The staff working inside saw us looking so he came out to tell us poke delivery was late that day. He said that poke was normally delivered around 9 and I appreciate him coming out to inform us. The rest of Costco is just like any other Costco. Staffs are nice and facility is clean. read more

This review is for the Optical department at the Lihue Costco only: I called to ask a question, and Kim answered. She was clearly put out about taking my call. My husband and I went to the optical dept. there were no other customers. She took over five minutes just to acknowledge us. I had a RX on my phone. She said she needed a hard copy no asked if I could email it to her since it would take over an hour for me to go home, print the same copy and return. She said she cannot accept outside emails. I asked if we can prepare the order, and I'll fax it to her. She said no. She offered no alternatives or suggestions. She was elitist in how she spoke to us. I have dealt with her before. Same experience. She is not warm or welcoming or even friendly. You need a better representation than Kim. I would like to speak to a manager personally read more

After reading travel blogs before our trip, I decided to take everyone's advice to stop at Costco on the way to our hotel. If you have a nice, fully equipped kitchen then it is beneficial to stock up. If you are staying at a hotel with a mini fridge only, staples like booze/wine, souvenirs (chocolate macadamia MACs), chips are best. We stayed at 2 places this trip so did a bit of both. And, if you need to get smaller items at Safeway, I found their prices reasonable. The famous Kaloa Rum is at least $10 a bottle cheaper at Costco as well as the yummy mai tai Koloa mixers. Since our Costco on Kauai is frequented by the massive tourism industry, it makes sense that most reviews are generated from them...and for good reason, since it is pricey to buy groceries here. But as a resident, I had to praise the employees of Lihue Costco for their service. We don't ever need assistance (until the other night), but the staff is always friendly and helpful. This week we decided to pick up a new living room set and it required us to get some help. The staff on the floor was amazing in making sense of all the boxes we needed, and when it came to load them into our truck, we were amazed by the help provided by Shawn and Tyden, who also watched after 2 remaining boxes that wouldn't fit on our 1st trip (even though the store had closed before we returned). Man, this place gets packed! We usually swing though a Costco while on vacation so we can prepare meals and save some money on eating out. They really aren't too much different than Costco in the states except for fresher seafood and much busier. We came on a weekend in January, big mistake since it was playoffs and every one on the island was here getting stocked up on food and booze. I was a little disappointed that there weren't more samples, I mean isn't that the main reason people shop here? Anyways, we stocked up on vacation food, grabbed the famous $1.50 Hot dog and soda and were on our way. If you live in Hawaii Costco has some pretty spectacular benefits you can't get at other retailers, if you are on vacation it can save you some money on food also, especially if you are with a group. read more

You're a tourist and you've managed to score some great lodging accommodations on this island, at a minimum, a suite with a small kitchen and decent transportation. What should you do before you go explore? Costco. I don't care if you don't have a membership, buy one, it'll pay for itself. This is stop numero uno for so many reasons. During our week plus stay, I enjoyed two meals, daily, that Costco contributed to: mango and island bananas (usually picked fresh from the vine/branch, the bananas around here are fantastic, tart and sweet and tiny), and fresh tuna poké, by the sledful, scooped from Costco's big bins of pescado heaven. I lived off the stuff, never tired of it, and the eats powered a ton of hikes and adventures. So get your groceries here. A tip on local beer: there isn't much to discover, so grab that Kona Brewing variety pack, it'll do ya. But definitely don't stop there. You could buy the rest of your island supplies, from snorkels and bodyboards to shirts and shades, from these aisles, and even if you left them in your awesome lodging accommodations for the next lodger to enjoy, you'd still, likely, save money -- compared to renting or buying from businesses elsewhere. All of this said, if you have a sliver of conscience about supporting local, just stick with getting your groceries here, and prepare to spend a lot more on everything else. read more

Poor customer service. Walked out after buying our things and got something at the food court. Tried to go use the restroom after and husband had the card. He had gone to the car. Was denied entrance to use the restroom because I had no card on me. This would never happen at the Costcos I have used at home. Be warned. Have never had to show my card at any Costco food court on the mainland either. read more

Yelp 100 Challenge 95 Everyone loves Costco! Get off the plane and come stock up! The fish selection is amazing and the ahi is so fresh. Since we were staying on the north side, that meant we had close to a 45 minute ride. Thank goodness Costco has this terrific ice deal, 20 pounds of ice for $2.69 and our fish stayed cold the entire time. Oh and Costco gas is the best deal on the island. read more

Our first stop in Kauai was here! Comparable prices to Costco here. We got water, and some food to cook at our condo. We got this really yummy nut butter too we can't find here. Bummer! So yummy! Nuts there were a good price too. I found a cute skirt there for cheap too which I wore a lot during our vacation there. Fast checkout and great selection of products. My ankle injury flared up after the first intense hike we did through Waimea Canyon to the waterfalls so we came back to Costco to get a pair of trekking poles. While they were not the best trekking poles (as I discovered on the trail) they served their purpose and were inexpensive. They also had all kinds of snorkel equipment and anything and everything you could possibly need while on the island. As a parent/grandparent traveler, Costco here in Lihue is better than you could imagine because it has "local" favorites (coffee, candy, cookies) as well as everything beach related (chairs, umbrellas, goggles, boogie boards, swim suits, sun screen, canoes, kayaks - I mean really what tourist needs to buy a kayak - but a local might). Yes the rotisserie chickens are $5 like on the mainland. Yes the Kirkland branded items are also the same price as the mainland. Can you drink a gallon of vodka on vacation? I hope not but you have this option at less than $20. You can buy your premier cru Bordeaux and every beer by the case as well. I know you wouldn't but, do NOT pack cheese into your luggage; buy it at old faithful Costco after you land. The cheese is available in the Lihue Costco. A special shout out of gratitude for the ENORMOUS package of ahi I got which easily would be $100 (50 pieces) for $20ish. I needed ginger and more soy/wasabi than provided in the package - but no complaints - it was heaven. You should also support the local economy and its pricing but if you have the need and bandwidth to make your own meals and drinks - this place is the bomb. read more

I know I always say this about Costco, but "it's Costco". Here in the islands they have the best prices you are likely to find on supplies. Bread (get the Punaluu sweet bread...it's wonderful and only available in the islands). Meats (Portuguese sausage anyone?). Fruits. Bottled water. Whatever. Plus guidebooks, swimwear, and a lot of the usual Costco merchandise. Also definitely the cheapest fuel around. About the only thing I will note is that their lau lau and poke are NOT as good as you can get elsewhere (e.g. Foodland). But otherwise, this is the place to come when you arrive on the island to stock-up on what you'll need for your stay here. read more

They make fresh sushi at Costco on Kauai, practically in front of you! It's a great deal and actually good. We took it to the beach for an impromptu picnic. Otherwise, prices seemed essentially comparable to the mainland, which is impressive. They also sell some Hawaii-specific things--boogie boards, beach chairs, sun shirts, Hawaii shirts, sarongs. Great Costco! Costcos are our first stop on every island and we've been to Maui, Oahu and Kauai now but they are all different and the same. The Kauai one was very different in the sense that they had Kauai cookies and other Kauai specific items. If you're looking for great Kona coffee, this is not a great place, if you're on another island try get it there. I was looking for bulk of Kauai cookies because I love those and they had a large boxful here, found nowhere in the Costcos of the other islands. They also have Stroopwafel too which is random but awesome. It's a great place to stock up on necessities, even if you don't have access to a kitchen, we were at an awesome hotel in Kauai but still got water, pineapple, etc. Plentiful parking, totally recommend. read more

We were lucky enough to have a rental car and a kitchen for the week, so the four of us decided to take advantage and prepare a lot of our meals ourselves. This helped us to keep our travel costs down and eat a bit healthier. Based on the Costco crowds that I'm used to, I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of shopping here on a Saturday afternoon. We picked up plenty of food for breakfasts (eggs/bacon/fruit and yogurt/granola), lunches (turkey/ham/cheese sandwiches), dinners (meat/veggies/salad and ravioli/pesto), and snacks (chips/salsa/guacamole, mandarins). We also picked up booze and mixers. There were a few things we needed in lower quantity, so we picked up those items up at the Foodland near our hotel. Great one stop shop for gifts- check alcohol section which has Koloa rum, yuzu sake, and large whisky and rum selection. Also the snack aisle for macadamia nuts, chocolates, and Asian snacks (squid, ahi jerky, etc). Do not miss the clothing are which has inexpensive swim sets for the whole family, large section of sarong patterns, and Hawaiian shirts galore all for a low rice. Our island list goes: Land Luggage Rental Car Costco This Costco is a really fantastic size, I thought it'd be smaller. But it carries everything we needed for our 10 day stay. The best difference is a lot more macadamia and coconut snacks. Which, to be honest, make great gifts. People don't want knick-knacks they have to find a place for then eventually stick in a box. Food makes them happy, helps them experience the island, and it doesn't take up space. Another downside to this is they seem to not have boxes at the registers like they do on mainland to help bring items to the car and inside where you're staying. It's not a huge deal, but it definitely helps to shorten the trips to and from the car. You HAVE to try the powder donuts & coconut chocolate covered macadamia nuts. Lastly, nifty trick I learned. If there is an * in the top corner is the pricing tag, it means they are discontinuing the item. read more

What would a trip to the islands be without making a stop or two (Or four, like we did!) at their local Costco? I love shopping at Costco not only for the daily essentials our family usually stocks up on such as Lysol Antibacterial Wipes, paper towels and toilet paper, but their other goodies as well such as their extensive wine selection, sunscreen (as we did on this trip) and other seasonal items. This branch also carried many Hawaiian gifts for us to bring home for ourselves and others that were unique to the Hawaii Costcos such as 100% whole bean Kona and/or Kauai Coffee, chocolate macadamia nut candies, and Golden Islands Korean Barbecue Jerky (DELICIOUS!!!). They also offered an extensive offering of bathing suits thanks to Hawaii's consistent mild temperatures, trade winds and sunny skies, so we stocked up on a few, but really should have picked up more since they're only available during the summer months in California. And thanks to Costco's excellent return policy, we were able to exchange our daughter's bathing suit a day later for a larger size. There were many different suits to choose from between Sanrio's Hello Kitty, Roxy and Speedo brands. The cashier who helped us with the exchange at their service desk wasn't showing any Aloha spirit, but didn't dampen our spirits. We will definitely return the next time we're back on the island. read more

Costco is magic everywhere. It's just the degree of it's magic that varies from location to location. On the island of Kauai, Costco is a full blown wizard. I thought I'd swing by and find a smaller, island sized version of the Costco I know; aka Costco-lite. No such thing. This place is as large as any variant found on the mainland. Like its mainland brothers, the parking lot was slammed with shoppers. Prices inside didn't seem to far out of line with what I experience normally. The gasoline prices here are full $1.20 cheaper than anywhere else on the island (WTF). Also the famous $1.50 hotdog and drink combo is also a $1.50 here as well. They've got to be taking a beat on the food court margins. The place was packed with shoppers and the costco effect was in full swing. I love the costco koolaid and how much I end spending to sustain the habit. Keep it up Jelenik. While Costco might seem like an odd stop on a Hawaiian vacation, it's actually super convenient if your accommodations include a fridge.
