We came looking for some reef safe sunscreen and ended up shopping quite a bit from here. This is the only Walmart on the island and it kind of lives up to that responsibility. They have lots of variety of local snacks, beers and local food items. We also got a few things to take back home and the packaging held very well. Everything you would need for your trip that you either couldn't carry or forgot to bring can be found here -from sunscreen to umbrellas , food and medicines or cosmetics . Lots of variety of souvenirs and I felt they had more choices at a reasonable price than some of the fancier stores.

I forgot to pack our toothbrushes and so glad there's a Walmart in Lihue, a reason for our stop here. I also needed water, wine, & snacks. I shop at Walmart alot back on Oahu and I really see the difference here. Huge Walmart, organized, and this Walmart gets busy but the goes smoothly. Note., the wines, alcoholic beverages are locked up here in glass cages, you will have to ask a staff member for help. There is a bottom there, but I missed it. I had to look for a staff. Once you get your bottle of wine, there is a security device on bottles, which will be removed at check out. I think this is awesome, I hope stores on Oahu starts this as well, great idea to prevent thefts of the good stuff. I Got all of my essentials, toothpaste, water, cheap wine, shrimp chips, my favorite salted caramel twix and waited about 10 mins in line. The family in front of me had a cart full of items, they live on the other side of Kauai so they mentioned they might as well stock up. The cashier ringing was quick! Got everything I needed and also saved too. Happy with our visit, thank you Walmart!

This is the only Walmart on the island and conveniently located to the Lihue area, so be sure to stop by and grab some snacks, drinks, etc, after landing at LIH. Aside from Costco, they have the best prices on alcohol, sodas/water, snacks, Hawaiian chocolates, and most other local or souvenir items. Similar to Walmarts in Hawaii, they have a full section just for souvenirs and Aloha shirts. Just be sure to hang onto your receipt until you leave the store because they have an employee checking at the door! I saw people fumbling through their purses, unable to locate their receipt even though they had just paid! Or so they claimed lol!

No matter where we travel to…read more... Somehow, some way, if there just so happens to be a Target there, my wife will miraculously find a reason to convince me that we need to stop in. Yeah, even while on vacation where I know for a fact that we 100% packed everything we could possibly need for our trip before leaving home... (Trust me, after filling her suitcase, she still uses the other half of my suitcase so I can carry her toiletry bag, her extra pairs of shoes, and like 12 canisters of sunscreen in every SPF who can think of) And just like that, now MY suitcase is nearly full. But just so you know, I purposely was keeping the other half of my suitcase empty for all of the souvenirs and gifts I was gonna get for people back home... Sorry Gigi, guess you're just gonna get another fridge magnet this year cause that's all I can fit. ;) Anyways... So there we were, once again on the beautiful Island of Kauai... And suddenly my wife remembered she needed something and said "let's go to Target in Lihue, I just want to pick up a couple of things." I of course, knew exactly what that meant... "Just a couple of things" would ultimately turn into a "cart full of stuff." Of course, you can bank on it that every single Target trip will either start or end at their in-store Starbucks. So there we were, walking around the Target in Lihue, Kauai approximately 2,600 miles from home... She picked up the things she originally came in for, grabbed a few snacks for the kids, and decided to get some ingredients to make a few meals back at our condo. But then as we continued walking down the aisles, something caught her eye. We were in the back to school section and she was like... "aww look how cute these lunch bags are for the girls lunches when they start school! Oh and they have matching containers for their school snacks too, we need these!" Mind you... It was the middle of summer. We were on an island. On Vacation. In Paradise. But there we were, shopping for lunch bags. At Target. So I said to my wife... "Lunch Bags?" "Shouldn't we just get these at our Target back home?" "Plus, we don't have room in the suitcases" My wife, "I think you have some space in yours" Needless to say, our girls are rocking their new lunch bags thanks to Dad ;) Ok, I'm being a little dramatic, but hopefully you can relate and enjoyed my little tale. But know that those memes you've seen about going to Target for a few things, but land up with a cart full of stuff are Real! Hey, I'm not gonna lie, some of the stuff in the cart is mine too! So what makes this Target stand out? Well for one... The parking lot has chickens and roosters just chillen out front. Of course, this target has all things Hawaiian and you can definitely find some great local merchandise and gifts that you can't get at your local Target location. The store is well stocked, clean and there are plenty of staff to assist. So.... The next time you travel to Kauai... Fella's, I recommend leaving a little space in your suitcase for that "spontaneous" Target run; your wife will appreciate you! Mahalo from the Mainland!

So decided to go to Costco to see if their optical department could tighten my Costco glasses before heading back to the mainland. The optical department closes earlier than the store itself, so we ended up wandering around. We intentionally went there on the last day after our luggage had been packed, thinking it would prevent us from buying things to bring back. But there were two things that we don't see on the mainland, that were of good price: 1.5 Coffee beans from Molokai Estate Coffee (100% from Molokai, and which my wife confirmed later was very good) and a Ube cream Liquor from the Philippines, that went great with the said coffee. Both fit in our checked bags and made it home safe. It wasn't too crowded because it was close to closing and was of large size, including self checkout lanes. Another good visit to Costco.

We arrived late in the day, so we missed out on the fresh poke and other seafood goodies. At least were able to grab some bottled water, Taro Brand Salmon Lomi, and chips. Those items alone were worth grabbing, and lasted us the entire week. My admiration for this location is because it wasn't as crowded as the Honolulu locations. Or maybe we just arrived at a good time late in the day on a Monday. Here, we were able to navigate through easily and select various treats for gifting. Like Mauna Loa chocolate macadamia nuts, a variety of Hawaiian Host items, and I tripped out seeing these bell pepper crisp and a ramen crunch snacks. We bought two bags of furikake and shoyu flavored rice crackers, or arare. In the bakery, I died and really wanted to try this fresh baked Mayorca Suprema sweet roll. Check out my pic, you'll be droolin'! And you can't leave the store without buying a bag of Island Princess Macadamia Popcorn Crunch or their honey roasted macadamia nuts. We did see cheap, but made of decent quality rain jackets if you need one ($19). As well as some bargain deals on casual shoes and sandals. No problem upon check out, service was cordial. And oh yeah, their outside food court is the standard. Hot dog and a drink $1.50, chicken bake, and a slice of pizza. Sadly, nothing different. No issues finding parking either. In short, this Costco location has a wide variety of items not found on the mainland. Great gift items as well as supplies you'll need for your resort stay. I mean, you can go to the Island Market or ABC Store, but that's where it can start to get pricey. Just my thoughts and my words. To each his own!

Needless to say, there's a bunch of options here for everyone. The Rice Shopping Center is what you would call your neighborhood shopping center, even though there's only a small handful of shops that reside here, especially with a large section for the laundromat and there's a bowling alley too. It was nice to explore here and found out there was a Vietnamese restaurant called Pho Kauai. I came here on a Saturday afternoon and again on Sunday evening to what this part of Lihue has to offer. It's not really fair to say that this shopping center is fairly ghetto, even though the parking lot was nearly full when I came here. Although it's a far cry from the malls I have been to on Oahu and Maui, this strip mall is a little disappointing and sad at the same time. For what it's worth though, it has its industrial charm and it helps the community with its presence. Especially with the communal laundromat there, many residents can do their thing here while having a meal or even go bowling on any time they wish. The overall experience here at the Rice Shopping center was okay and average. While it was nice to enjoy the benefits of travel and also enjoy restaurants and businesses via yelp, the Rice Shopping Center was not really your typical shopping center. As mentioned before, the laundromat seemed to be the key feature at this mall, as well as the bowling alley. They also have a restaurant and bar too, although I didn't go in there during this go around. I wish that they had more stores here, but the ambiance was decent to zilch. Since it was a weekend, this place was a ghost town and I thought it would have been busier. Rice Shopping center is located on Rice Street and Kress Street in the heart of Lihue, Kauai. I suspect that most merchants here accept credit cards, but cash is always king most places. I am not sure if the Kauai Bus comes through the area, but I rented a car during my stay on Kauai, so best bet is to check the Kauai bus schedule if you are commuting that way around Lihue and on Kauai in general. For the rest of us, there is plenty of parking here and more in the back lots, as well as nearby residential areas too. For me, I ended up checking out Pho Kauai as dinner option for Saturday night and the bowling alley as an entertainment venue for Sunday afternoon. Pho Kauai was a good option for y'all who love Pho and any type of Vietnamese cuisine. For the most part though, it was cool to be in a vintage bowling alley, especially when these kinds of businesses are a dying breed. We need to keep bowling alive to keep the business going! For me, while it was good to come here to Rice Shopping center for food and entertainment options, I've seen better and been in better places. This shopping center lacks that charisma that other neighborhood shopping centers do. Would I recommend this shopping center? Maybe. While the restaurant/bar is always a good choice, or maybe the Pho enticed you, and the bowling alley is your gym, come on down and experience this shopping venue for yourself. It can be a downer though, just fair warning. You've been warned. 3.0 stars for the overall experience - the shopping center as a whole. I was underwhelmed. Support local! C

Should have done more research before coming here…read more Grocery poke is surprisingly good in Hawaii, so tried to find the nearest supermarket near our hotel in Kauai. Our lunch on Day 3 had been a bust, so decided to eat in more and get needed supplies. I knew that Safeway was affiliated with Albertson's, which I THOUGHT owned Foodland (which has great poke)...so came here and bought other stuff (cause we were already there). Later found out that my assumption was incorrect. The employees here are tired of tourists, I think. The woman at the seafood counter (which has a small poke section), acted like she was doing me a favor when I asked for the rest of the fresh hawaiian style poke. When I asked how good the from-frozen ahi poke was, she mumbled something unintelligible. Cashiers don't have to be friendly but should be at least respectful, and appear as if trying The lane was open, so it wasn't too busy. She barely acknowledged us but did scan each item without being asked (and we were self self bagging). But then there was a pause to push the process to start the payment process. Then another long pause after I had entered my credit card. Then another pause to print receipt. Then finally after printing, she grabbed the receipt without looking at it and just stuck out her hand AT me to grab without looking at me. The last two actions were happening while she was having a funny (to her) conversation with a co-worker. Not good when two employees together are acting like this without shame. A part of me wanted to lightly slap her receipt-holding hand and tell her "Didn't your mama teach you manners?". Purchases: -- 2 bagels ($1.19 each) -- small Lucerne milk ($2.89) -- small cream cheese ($5.99) -- fresh (not frozen) ahi tuna ($29.99 per pound, paying $21.29). -- six pack can of Maui Brew Mango Beer ($14.99 with Dep fee of $0.30 -- PB Blondie Bestie ice cream from Ben and Jerry, pint for $4.99 (normally $8.99 but on sale so very good price...needed to download the Safeway app since my Von's or Albertson's card doesn't work...had good free wi-fi in store).
