Much nicer than most bargain stores I've been to on the mainland. They have a large grocery section with good prices, including some nice baked treats like peanut butter brownies and individual-serving mini-pies. TONS of canned food, beverages, and junk food. There are some ready-to-eat meals like salads and sandwiches in the refrigerated section. They have a shockingly extensive variety of frozen french fries. I'd steer clear of the produce aisle. We've bought produce here a few times just for the convenience because we were already here and didn't want to go to another store just for a few potatoes, but it's invariably been bad. Who goes to Walmart for produce, though? They have a lot of clothes, and they're better quality than you might expect. Also perfectly serviceable kitchenware, garden supplies, and just a bit of everything. Selection is somewhat limited, so they might not have your favorite brand of hair dye in the exact shade you want. Deal. The organization in the store is a bit random, and the staff are (I'm sorry to say) rarely helpful, but there's a great searchable app that will usually tell you exactly which aisle things are on. The checkout lines are usually really long, but there are plenty of self-checkout stations. read more

I generally have mixed feelings about Walmart, but highly recommend an early visit here for travelers. Stop here after you land at the airport to stock up on sunscreen, healthy snacks, and anything else that was hard to pack or you don't want to pay ridiculous prices for elsewhere. There's a Costco and two Safeways on the island but this is probably your easiest, cheapest, and most comprehensive bet. This store is huge (for Hawaii at least) and they have everything you could think of (Boogie boards? Check), and probably several useful things you didn't think of (unique Hawaiian treats that might sound strange but why not give em a try?). Also, the Walmart can inspire ideas about reasonably priced gifts for friends and family back home (Hawaiian coffee, cookies, candies, and the like). read more

We decided to utilize the pick up option through the Walmart application. When we arrived to the store, the deal pick-up parking was limited to 3 marked stalls. Which due to the busy shopping holiday season were full. We checked in fairly easily. But ended up waiting for close to 20 minutes for someone to arrive with our 1 item order. I know its a new service, but it may have been more efficient for me to walk into the some to pick & pay for my item. I will definitely give it another try in the future. But its definitely not a service to try when your in a pinch for time. read more

This has got to be the worst Walmart I have ever been in. I asked 3 employees where the Redbox was and none of them even knew what a Redbox was. It is just inside to the left of the entrance and the greeter didn't even know! I would give 5 stars if based on the electronics ladies alone. read more

Considering that all we have Walmart and Kmart as competitors and no Target- I do love this Walmart. Very clean & fast check out. Just remember to bring your own bags because they are sticklers for the "bag ban," no plastic bags. The key here is FAST check out as compared to Kmart (slow). Yes, Walmart is a bit cheaper in most items, but Kmart has a better selection of items like: toys, veggies/fruits, salad dressings and canned food. The employees here rock! This Walmart shreds over most Walmart stores on the mainland. TIP: Just FYI, it will be busier on Thursdays and Fridays because of the cruise ships that come in on those days. It will also get super crowded around office supply areas around July because local kids start school at the beginning of August. read more

Paid a visit immediately after picking up the rental car to load up on the necessities (snacks, bug spray, etc.). I'm a Tagalog speaker as my second language and it was soooo cool to hear all the workers speaking it as I walked through the store! This Walmart has a nice variety of souvenirs along with the usual yet still awesome Hawaiian chocolates. The only thing they didn't have (or at least from what I could find) was local produce. The prices are cheaper than a lot of the other stores in the area so that's a pretty big win. The only reason this place is getting docked a star is the inconsistency in terms of bagging advice. I was using the self checkout and noticed per HI state law there are no plastic bags. I didn't see any typical blue reusable bags in the near vicinity so I asked an employee what my options were for bags. She pointed me to these themed bags that were like $4 each--uh no thanks, I'll just carry my stuff out on my own I said. Only after finishing my transaction and walking to another side of the entrance/exit did I see that they DID in fact have the blue reusable bags for something like $0.60 each. Luckily the tourist trap didn't work on me hehe. read more

They have all your basic needs to last on the island. There's even souvenirs. This place saved my life. They had usb car chargers. Tip for cell phone owners: turn off your data or put it on airplane mode unless you're using your phone, to prevent battery life from draining because of roaming. read more

Apparently it's considered a weapon, but why does Walmart sell it in the SOUVENIR section?! I visited this Walmart as a tourist needing to buy a few basic items like water and food. I've been to many Walmarts on the mainland, and it was shocking how this one was run. I didn't have a car while I was in Kauai, so I walked to Walmart and approached it from the exit side first. As I didn't see the exit sign, I proceeded to enter the store through the exit, since that was the closest door to me. An employee stopped me and asked what I was doing. I told her that I'm entering the store, not stealing, and she insisted that I walk out the exit and then through the entrance. So I did as I was told, and another employee guarding the entrance lectured me that I was trying to enter from the exit. I told her I didn't see the sign. What is the big deal? I completed my shopping and checked out. I noticed that the employees check the receipts of every shopper carefully as they leave. In all other Walmarts I've been to and Costco, etc., the employees glance at the receipt and pretend to check. This Walmart gave me the impression that there is a lot of shoplifting and crime in the area. I came back to the same Walmart a couple days later as I needed some more supplies. I walked in with a hiking backpack, as I just got off a bus from a hike. The lady at Customer Service stopped me and said large bags are not allowed and that I must store it in a bag locker outside the store. None of their lockers worked, and I informed the employee guarding the entrance that I couldn't lock my bag in the locker. She spoke very poor English, but said that she doesn't know how to operate the locker. I went back in the store and lined up at Customer Service to see if they would help me hold my bag. I waited 15 minutes while the employee was dealing with the other customers ahead of me. Finally, I spoke to the manager and asked if she would help me hold my bag. Thankfully, she was a little more sensible and said she would allow me to shop with my bag. Because obviously, if I was intending to steal, why would I wait patiently in line for 15 minutes to try to check in my bag? I think their overpolicing of the store is ridiculous. I hail from the San Francisco Bay Area, a place with very high crimes, where people literally walk into a Walgreens on a bike with a trash bag, grab whatever they want, and leave without paying. The employees do nothing. Target stores in SF have been robbed so frequently, that they reduced their hours and close by 6 pm. I understand how shoplifting affect stores, but even the stores in my hometown do not do this. There needs to be more sensible policies and strategies for preventing shoplifting, and I also hope that they are training their employees in de-escalation and common sense. I was treated like a thief in the store. There will be a day when they do this to someone who will interpret it as racial profiling, and I don't think these employees have nearly enough tact to de-escalate, but would likely call the police and blow up the situation instead. In case that does happen, I just want to say for the record that I observed them treating customers of all ethnicities as thieves. I am Asian, and the employees who treated me like a thief were also Asian (Filipino). I'm noting this as Asians are often accused of participating in racial profiling in stores they own/run, so before anybody else who has a bad experience at this store does the same, just know that they treated me the same way. read more

This Walmart is hot!! As in I needed to take off layers hot. It didn't help that their McDonald's ice machine didn't work or that most of its lanes were backed up. Their produce section is laughable at best...barely anything there, exorbitant prices, and looks as if it has been sitting there...for a while. For everything else, they sell everything a typical Walmart sells in the states. If you are looking for alcohol there is so much variety and they even have Koloa rum here! Great for food souvenir shopping if you don't have Costco membership! If you are looking for water googles, they seem to only sell the low quality kids kind. read more

When I approached her because I needed help to see an item in one of the locked cases, she just mumbled with a yeah yeah I'll be right there. While she still talked story with someone. We had to stop here to buy fuel and stove for camping, because it is not allowed to fly with them. Of course this is not outdoor store, there is only one choice of stove, very heavy and inefficient one. However, we had to buy it. We had 8 nights on the island for camping, but the stove worked only the first night. So we had to survive without stove. Then after backpacking, we returned the stove but the worker there was suspicious about our claim. read more

if your looking for some good souvenirs, i reccomend you to come here because they sell most of the stuff same as other shops but cheaper! As a traveler i like to bring some goodies back home for friends and loved ones. I like to walk around and window shop first before buying things. Most places sell similar stuff such as ABC stores since they are all around town in kauai. Alot of your souvenirs such as shot glasses, stickers, fake leis, t shirts, caps, hats, pens, notepad, folders, keychains are all carried in Walmart. If you like hawaiian coffee in all certain brands from less expensive to know name brand ones are all carried here. They even carry tropical Hawaiian teas too for a third of the price where other places sell it for. I got a little of both and i was so happy i did because when i went to maui the prices for hawaii souvenirs was far more expensive than kauai. A tip is get all yo goodies in kauai vs. the bigger islands. Overall i like walmart much better than in Cali people are much nicer and people don't look too bad compared to Cali walmart lol. Never in my life did I think I would review a Wal-Mart. After all, aren't they all the same? Uh...no. While taking a bit of an unexpected adventure hike today, we needed to pick up some bug spray to stave off those pesky mosquitoes. Since the Wal-Mart was nearby, we popped in for a quick visit to the Pharmacy Department. Well HOLY CATS! Who knew... This Walmart sells your fresh flower leis for $20. This Walmart does NOT give out plastic bags, so BYOB (bag). This Walmart has an entire section dedicated to touristy trinkets to take back to loved ones...after all, who doesn't love a Kauai keychain or shot glass, or Hawaii t-shirt?! This Walmart sells all types of floral shirts, skirts, dresses, sarongs, shorts if you want to dress the theme while visiting the island. This Walmart also has an entire section decided to mac nut cookies and Hawaiian treats. And, oh yeah, they sell all of the other Walmart items you may want to purchase at the beginning or end of your stay in Kauai - like a case of bottled water to stave off dehydration with all of the adventure hiking you're going to do. read more

Some vacationers are hotel & resort people. (Who wants to cook and wash dishes on vacation?!) Others are vacation rental/condo/timeshare people. (Sometimes you can feel like a bird in a gilded cage in a resort and get tired of paying $20 for breakfast and waiting for the valet to bring your car up.) If you fall into the latter category, you need to stock up at the WalMart as you leave Lihue, works whether you're going to the North Shore or South. Beer and wine are pretty reasonably priced for Kauai and you won't find food any cheaper except maybe at Costco which would be a little out of your way if heading north. I wouldn't go too crazy at Walmart, however, because you have "Big Save" supermarkets (think Krogers or Piggly Wiggly) all over the island and can get whatever fresh stuff you need pretty conveniently. I think the big bags of chips were the cheapest at Walmart. We didn't have a menu for the week. It would just seem so wrong with the relaxed atmosphere in Kauai. We did a combination of eating out and cooking fresh fish or teriyaki steak on the grill augmented with staples from WalMart. Before you complain about the prices, remember there are no cargo ships serving the island, and everything comes in by air or a small freighter. read more

This is a typical Walmart. All the other reviews marvel at how clean it is, but our Walmart at home is clean, so not sure what they are talking about. Maybe they are hipster, single people who don't normally shop at Walmart and just assume it will be nasty. It's definitely an inexpensive option for food or minor souvenirs. There are two things that are different than our Walmart at home: 1. Bring your own recyclable bag. they don't have plastic bags. That is as island rule, not a Walmart rule, but I like it. 2. Don't count on a wide selection or even any selection. This is not necessarily Walmart's fault - this is a side effect of living on a small island. Shipments of food only come on certain days, so items will run out. For example, I wanted granola bars. I like the Fiber One kind. Not only were those out, but every kind of granola bar was gone except those hard crunchy kind. However, the grocery stores are worse and more expensive. All in all, it's a great place to get food, souvenirs (specifically the macadamia nut candy - they have shelves and shelves of it for a lower cost than anywhere else), those toiletries or other things you left at home - you get the picture. read more

You have to see it to believe it - Wal-Mart is hopping on a Friday night!! This is the hang-out, pick-up, go-to place on the island. The parking lot was full on a friday night! So, normally, we are a Target family, on the mainland, but when we are in Kauai - wal-Mart is Ono! Had to stop by and pick-up a few items, goggles, water slippers, neck pillow and river rocks (as requested by the bride-to-be). Prices are as expected -higher than the mainland but lower than convenience shops on the island. I had the most fun in Walmart - they let me go crazy on their motorized scooter at .05 mph - music was blasting and the people, well, it's Friday night in Walmart, any body who IS anybody is here - they should start charging for admission and use a velvet rope - really, it was off the hook. Beware - hubby took a wrong turn on the parking lot and somehow turned into a street - "cat colony" - crap! street was filled with cats w/ glowing eyes (from the headlights) hundreds of 'em- creepy! sorry cat lovers. read more

Usually a Walmart is a Walmart is a Walmart but the Lihue Walmart makes vacationing in Hawaii significantly cheaper. It took a couple of years but I now know that if you are bringing back copious amounts of souvenirs for family and friends, skip the ABC store, Hilo Hatties, or other tourist traps. Walmart has significantly cheaper prices for coffee, mac nuts, and trinkets and also has some of the cheaper grocery prices. If you don't have a Costco membership, I would suggest going here for your grocery and souvenir needs. Usually we drive over to Walmart after arriving at the airport to get our list of groceries before heading over to the condo and then go right before we leave to get any last minute souvenirs. read more

I hate to say it, but Walmart seems to be a must-visit destination for knickknacks. Built-in McDonald's (with saimin!). $1.65 bamboo mats for the beach. Miscellaneous necessities, sunscreen, toiletries, etc., all make the trip worthwhile. That said, things can be hard-to-find, and if you're fortunate enough to have a Costco card, you can save a good 20% or so on treats (Hawaiian style cookies, macadamia nuts, etc.) for folks back home. Lastly, if you got reusable grocery bags, bring 'em -- you gotta pay for your bags. But shit if I can get like 10 boxes of macadamia nuts for $9..I'm gonna hit up Wal-Mart instead of ABC store! Plus they have a plethora of fatty snacks to choose fromfor really cheap..from oreos to your island favorites like li hing mui candy, nori, and some other sweet treats. Typically I avoid Walmart like the plague. Something about a Walmart makes me feel like I'm in the middle of Kansas and a tornado will hit at any moment. But this Walmart is different. Maybe it's necessity, the lack of options, or the convenience and low prices. Or, quite possibly, a combination of all of the above. Located in the heart of central Lihue, and 5 minutes from the airport, makes this a no brainier for incoming tourists. Other than Costco (membership required and 10 minutes South) there are not many other cheap options that offer what they do. Coolers, fresh leis, alcohol, food, sunblock, camping equipment, reading materials, inexpensive jewelry, toiletries, maps and travel guides. It's all here, in abundance, reasonably sized, and relatively cheap. If your stay is on the North Shore a stop here could save you the big bucks. The only other options are Safeway & Cost-u-less in Kapaa (forty minutes south of Princeville, 20 minutes north of you) before your destination.... Other than Foodland in Princeville. Foodland is great, but they are definitely more expensive (Foodland & other small grocers in Kapaa & Hanalei too, but they more expensive than Safeway). If you're on your way home this is the cheapest place to pick up some novelty items such as calendars, lotions, candles, picture albums, Kauai & Hawaiian coffe, candy, tikis, and other assorted items. The Island Soap & Candle Works items are made fresh on island & is the same as the items they carry in their stores. Make sure you bring your own bags, as they don't offer any- except for the $1 reusable ones that they sell. Customer service is minimal at best. An indoor Mc Donald's offers a quick, artery clogging snack/meal if you choose to consume one. NOTE: I seriously can't give Walmart more than 3 stars out of principle alone. But, this may likely be one of the few and appreciated Walmart's in the world- thus the high rating. read more

This is definitely the spot to grab souvenirs for cheap -- especially since they come in cheaper than ABC (sorry, I love those stores but I'm going to have to buy in bulk, then it's going to be here). Actually I kid, see the thing is this is your stop for packaging material. I had to mail some things back to New York and while you can get boxes for free at various stores, you're going to have to come here for bubble wrap and mailing tape. That aside, if you have long hair and you're on vacation, those tiny hotel bottles probably aren't going to last very long. Which is why buying a normal size bottle of shampoo, conditioner, and perhaps lotion is probably best bought here. Sure, it's not the spot for local made items, but there are some things that you will just have to get if you plan on spending a while there OR you have to mail boxes of stuff. And yes, they do not offer any kind of bags. As with the rest of the island, they encourage that you bring your own bags as they will not provide you with one. There is one conveniently nearby that you can purchase though. (Things I wish I knew when I first shopped here). read more
