The 200XL hawaiian shirt was my favorite thing about this place. Really cool to stop by and see if you are in the area. However, I didn't love the rest of the store. While there were some cute prints, the prices were high (some shirts were $80), but most fabric was scratchy and uncomfortable. The place is large, but feels empty and gloomy as you're walking around. There was one shirt I liked that I debated getting, but the layout of the print didn't look like it was worth $40. read more

I have visited Hilo Hatties for years. Love this store. I have gone to several island's locations, and have never been disappointed.

I've loved Hilo Hattie ever since my first visit to Oahu when we went to go see their World's Biggest Aloha Shirt (400XL) on display! Unfortunately, that store has now closed. Sadly, this one doesn't look too far behind as it's all rundown and gloomy looking inside! This store features a free shell lei per person on arrival and samples of Kauai Coffee. They have do have a 200XL Aloha shirt on display (in the back), super clean bathrooms, and friendly staff. The store carries tons of apparel and souvenirs such as Aloha shirts and dresses, t-shirts, plushies, quilts, keychains, etc. If you're looking for couple's wear, then this is your spot since there is a big selection! Prices are high for some things but pretty low for others. Stop by if you're in the area, but I wouldn't recommend a dedicated trip across the island just to shop here. read more

I like Hilo Hattie's, but it was a bit of a disappointment this trip. First of all the air-conditioner is broken. It was like a swamp. We wanted to look more but we were over heated. How do the employees work with these conditions? It's too hot to shop let alone work a full shift and try to give excellent customer service. The candy selection was truly wanting. I insisted my 3 friends come with me because they had never been. They have no desire to come back. So sad. Our customer service was excellent regardless of the dreadful heat and humidity in the store. I do not recommend at all until the air conditioner is fixed. The prices were as expected. I read about how this place is an institution and very famous, however when we walked in, it was pretty desolate and a little sad looking. The shirts looked like they were very cheap quality and stock on things appeared pretty low. Not all items are Hilo Hattie branded but we ended up buying two Aloha shirts. We had read that this is the place to go for authentic Hawaiian made clothes, and were looking for a summer dress for my wife. We had also been looking for the best souvenir places to get something for our grandkids. Turns out, it's all in this one place. i love hilo hatte. they are soooooo overpriced but they have chickens. while i walked around the store, i saw some interesting items. i saw a xs men's t shirt that was the size as a xxxxl. it could literally fit on a sumo wrestler. also, on display o saw an 200 xl t... cool... then i saw it, the glorious, the best, chicken. these stuffed animal chickens are outstanding! i found them all over the store counting over 361 chickens. for real. they even have lies! even though there was still only 1 employee, it didn't matter. we love chickens! read more

We went here specifically for the Dole Whip!! On the building wall, it's advertised that they have it there so I was excited since we were not visiting the Dole Plantation in Oahu. As we walked in, we were greeted with a shell necklace... cool (gift for the kids back home!). Inside is a souvenir shop. On my last day in Kauai, I went here to get some presents to take home. I walk with a cane and I was pretty tired. Debbie had me sit down and ran around the store picking out things my family might like - 6 choices of Hawaiian shirts for my brother, for example. I checked some of the tags and it looks be like most things are made in HI and a lot of the clothing is cotton. Debbie also recommended some flavored macadamia nuts (bought a bunch as gifts) and mentioned that they carry 100% Kona coffee (got some of that too.) She also gifted me a mug, so I had something for myself and not just everyone else. AND she carried the bag out to my waiting car and driver, and recommended we stop at Wailua Falls, which is nearby - so we did. I have a retail background myself, and I have rarely met someone so willing to help, so actually helpful (not only willing) and cheerful. It was a great experience. read more

Some of you are going to say, "Four stars..?!" to which I will reply, "Darn tootin'!", and here's why: This venerable Hawaiian department store still has the best selection of cliché Hawaiian clothes for men, women and children on the island. Need matching garb for the whole family for that ubiquitous "family photo in paradise"? They have that. Granny's gaudy, bright purple hibiscus-patterned sarong will match little Bobby's size S shirt, your wife's glorious bath sheet mu mu, your expansive XXL shirt and Uncle Eddie's sundress...(Uncle Eddie is a little off.) But together, you will look like a family, find each other easily in crowds, be safer at crosswalks and maybe visible from space, if you all bunch together! Seriously though, so many tourists come here and worry about standing out. They don't want to be mistreated (understandably) or overcharged (also a real thing). I say: own it. You can't hide. Your mainland moon-tan makes you obvious as a melon in a pile of cherries, anyway. Even expensive oompaloompa fake tans are obvious; you just look like a tourist with more disposable income, silly and orange. Play it up! And start here. Don't miss the little door prizes and giveaways, a throwback to the old days. Be careful of being roped into the "pick your pearl" scheme, unless you have come to buy jewelry. Don't get me wrong, it's fun, but picking a pearl encourages you to pick jewelry to go with it. And it's beautiful stuff; Maui Divers has beautiful ring, necklace and bracelet settings for their pearls. Be aware though, it can set you back a pretty penny once you get into it! The missing star is indeed for the prices. But if you come here fully expecting to pay extra for the selection and continuity of matching family fashions, and know exactly what you want to spend and stick to budget, you'll have a fun experience. Remember: own it! You're only as big a sucker as you want to be, and the value of your experience depends on your perspective: that of a tourist. So, will it be the white shirt with day-glow palms and pineapples, or the black with electric blue surfboards and orange tiki heads..? Recommended. read more

Original Hilo Hattie location. The best things about this store: 1. Free shuttle from pier; 2. Complimentary puffs shell necklace greeting at arrival; and 3. The dole whip. Otherwise, the quality of the snacks I bough were disappointing. The chocolate covered macadamia nuts were just bad. The chocolate was so old it had started to look mottled and tasted bad! The hot chili peppa macadamia nuts were just meh. You can't have more than a few otherwise the fattiness of the nuts upset your tummy. read more

As you walk in, you are greeted with a Lei. That was nice. The restrooms were suitable, that's a good thing. This is a "department" store, so don't expect cheap clothings here. Overall it's a decent place. Had a little Dole whip bowl, was a little surprise - and it was tasty. read more

Beware upon entering this store. I was there about 5 minutes when I noted that my legs were itching. I thought I was having an allergic reaction to something but couldn't figure out what. A memory then clicked in from long ago..... FLEAS! Yes, FLEAS and I looked down and flicked two off of me! In total for 10 minutes I had 8 bites. A huge infestation. A bit pricey, but authentic Hawaiian Aloha wear. Sometimes they have a sale (like today). I like the 100% cotton made-in-Hawaii clothes, especially on sale. I nearly always pick up at least one Aloha shirt when i visit the islands. And, yes, I wear them a lot in my daily living (hey...it's a button-up shirt with a collar, so it's perfectly fine for work!). You can go other places and find cheaper, but read the labels. Made in Bangladesh? Rayon/polyester? Up to you, but I prefer cotton made in Hawaii, thankyouverymuch. The pearl lady is a minor nuisance. Easy to ignore. Probably the one thing I would ding them for is they are very thin on staff. So it can be difficult to find someone if you have a question (I had to find the girl who greets you at the door, who in turn had to go find a floor person). read more

I find it funny that people are complaining that this place is expensive. Everything in Hawaii is expensive! The prices in this store is as much or less than your typical gift stores in Kauai. We have been in gifts in Lihue, Poipu, Kapaa, Hanalei, Princevill, Waimea and many other cities on the island. If you want the cheapest gifts, the only place is Walmart in Lihue. Otherwise, they are all the same. The thing that makes Hilo Hattie is their selections. There are more varieties of gifts. The quantities of clothes to choose from is abundant. Eh...worth going just to check out. This location was kind of dark and depressing. It is definitely geared towards tourists, but the Hawaiian dresses were overpriced. $50 and up! Wal-mart actually had a decent selection for way less...and I hate Wal-mart. They have novelty items like t-shirts, slip flops, magnets. Definitely a place to get souvenirs for those at home. Disappointed in Hilo Hattie's. Air conditioner was not working so they had these huge fans blowing ~ not so hot for the hair if you're headed to dinner We had a coupon for a free "dole whip". Guess what? The machine wasn't working! It seems Hilo Hatties (at least this one) has scaled down to mostly clothes. We always enjoy shopping at Hattie's when we go to Hawaii. They have had many problems lately and have closed some stores. This one is still open and seemed to being doing some business the day we were there. Of course it helps when the tour buses stop there. I've shopped in a lot of touristy shops for Hawaiian shirts and have not found any that have the variety, quality and price that you find in Hattie's. It's such an icon, I hope they stay in business. read more

We've been going to the same island for 3 years now, and the last two times we were there, we visited Hilo Hattie, because we have a coupon for a free mug or tote bag. Not my idea, my husband's, he collects mugs! Yeah, we have to take many to Goodwill because we've ran out of shelf room for them. What was I supposed to do, divorce him because he loves mugs? The tote bag I wanted, they were out, I do collect them but they're all folded & tucked where no one can see them, and I do use them! I'm a vendor & make handmade stuff, they are necessities. But we can't have BOTH. We went through the whole store trying to find something, ANYTHING that wasn't a 'want' but more like a 'need', and not too big to bring back to the mainland. So, I found a couple Gardenia shampoo (among other things valued $25), but it was not until I got home I found out they were bottled in 1998. I was suckered again, in buying a product that nobody was buying! It was also a gel, and I didn't know until I got home, my doctor told me I can't have anything GEL. I hate to send them back, but I did and I was credited for them, but the Customer Service was not very kind to me. I was transferred from one management to another, and it took a lot more work than just it sounds. $$ to $$$, I could have donated that shampoo to Goodwill, but too late and nobody pinched me to say . . . 'you know what, Flory?' I will just remember NOT TO GO THERE AGAIN, and if he goes, I'll stay in the car! read more

Hilo Hatties was a great place to buy souvenir gifts and clothing to wear here or to take home. It was cool to be greeted and lei'd upon arrival. I love their outfits! Their dressing rooms are spacious. The prices here are a bit pricey for clothing and jewelry but the pooka shell items were fairly inexpensive. It was cool to see the freshwater pearl farm! I just wished I had more money because some of their dresses were spectacular. The employee's were really friendly and very helpful assisting us finding the correct sizes. This is a very small square footage Hilo Hattie retail chain store. This store's merchandising is limited to the amount of space, so this store is not comparable to the other Hilo Hattie Store's size or store merchandising offered like the store locations in Lahaina, Maui, Honolulu, Oahu or Orange, CA. Anyway, get your free seashell lei and free selection of juices and coffee when you enter the Hawaiian Hilo Hattie stores. Oh, yeah-the Hilo Hattie parking lot is small, but there is an adjacent parking lot way down from the main parking lot. Tourists shopping here will do a lot of schlepping, if you buy a lot at this tourist trap. So, go get your car first while having your loved ones standing by the Hilo Hattie Bus Stop with the plethora o' tourist crap and load in your tourist crap. FYI: If you read the tourist actviity brochures, find Hilo Hattie's coupons and get either a free mug, macadamia nut candies or $100 spending over a certain amount-something like that is offered in the tour books located at each and every hotel, grocery store, ABC convenient store, and where ever there's a news stand. Oh-before I forget . . . Wal-Mart down the street from Hilo Hattie was selling a Hula Girl wiggle doll for $5.00 LESS than what Hilo Hattie charges for the SAME doll. My daughter, Kris was with me when I bought the Hula Girl doll at Wal-Mart and the coffee prices for the same coffee sold at Hilo Hatties is less expensive at Wal-mart, too. Well, we had to stop by for souvenirs while in Hawaii, and this place does that pretty well. With a small water cooler up front for visitors to sip on, and free popcorn to wander the store with, we started our adventure through the aisles of t-shirts, magnets, postcards, macadamia nuts, and more. There were mugs, cards, stuffed animals, stickers, books, necklaces out of shells, pens, and all kinds of other paraphernalia, and I signed up for their listserv, too. Staff is friendly and looking to help you find the right size, shape, or gift. All kinds of random stuff -- I recommend picking up lots of chocolate covered macadamia nuts here, they're crazy good... and fresh. All kinds of goodies, and all at decent prices, too, not quite as bad as I would've expected. Again, like others have said - go here last before you go to the airport. It's much easier that way when you can just lug it all home rather than back to your hotel. read more

1 STAR is for the throwback factor. I have been going to Hilo Hattie's since my parents first took me to Hawaii as a kid. You got the lei, the juice, and you wandered around, looking at the clothes (never bought there except t-shirts) and souvenirs. 1 STAR is for the quilt squares! OMG!! They sell Hawaiian fabric in 5 and 8 inch pre cut squares. And they are super affordable. This is EXACTLY what I was looking to bring to my MIL who is a quilter!! 1 STAR is for the local items they sell. Unlike ABC Stores, they really seem to try to emphasize Hawaiian products, or perhaps Polynesian too. Everyplace has their China imports, but at Hilo Hatties this seems to be kept at a minimum. 1 STAR for the free mug, coupons for discounts, and 5 t shirts for $20 (yes I know they are from China)! Being able to get a freebie or a discount always makes me happy, and when I was able to get it on what I felt were affordable things, it makes me even happier. So, the reason they didn't get the last star is the things that are gone.... -- no more shell lei greeting (at least not when we were there, we were greeted but not offered a lei) -- no more juice (I think there was water, maybe coffee?) -- and general lack of pride of ownership. I remember when Hilo Hattie's was THE place, especially in Oahu. There was rain dripping thru the ceiling in multiple locations, the building definitely showed it's age, and the push to buy jewelry or open a pearl was almost embarrassing. Do not order online. Sizes all over map. I bought 5 size L shirts. I have a hilo hattie shirt previously I bought in Las Vegas. Of the 5 I ordered - only 2 are large. All are marked as large but the other 3 are 4" bigger shoulder to shoulder and like dresses. Interestingly, the hilo hattie brand rayon, the more expnsive are the most inaccurate. So ... I place an order for 5 large and they knew darn well when packing and shipping the shirts were way off the mark. They also charge alot for shipping and know carn well I have to pay taxes to get them in my country. But they do it anyway. Thats what burns me. What a waste of time and money. I'm going to film a video showing all as when companies do this, making me work and wasting my money they deserve the exposure. read more

They have manipulating sales people that trick you into "discounted" fake open packages so that you can't return product. The skin care products appears to be part of Hilo Hattie because they are located inside their store however they are independent. DO NOT TALK TO THOSE PEOPLE THEY WILL TRICK YOU INTO WASTING YOUR MONEY. They took advantage of my sweet elderly aunt. I went into Hilo Hattie specifically looking for a Birthday gift for my wife. I wouldn't say that she has everything, but she is very particular about everything especially jewelry. My sister-in-law joined me as we looked at the wide selection of earrings, necklaces, pearls, and bracelets. Jeanne helped us through the process, she was extremely attentive and helped pick out the perfect gifts. She was not pushy, but informative very patient as we could not make up our minds. At the very end, we walked out with a perfect gift that my wife just loves! For those of you looking for trinkets and other Hawaiian souvenirs, Hilo Hattie's is your one stop shop for absolutely everything: Hawaiian shirts and dresses, Hawaiian music, oyster shucking, quilted bags and oven mitts, wooden statues and bowls but alas, no Stefon. As soon as you walk in the doors, you are greeted and gifted a shell lei. And yes, I have restored great honor on my family by avoiding the obvious joke. Giggity. A majority of the shop is clothing and accessories and there is a large section for touristy knick knacks and a small jewelry section. Will you use a majority of the things you get here? Probably not but if this is your first visit- go wild. I usually stop in to grab a couple souvenirs as they have coupons in nearly every coupon book for some "freebie" but then you have to measure whether the chocolates, mug, or cooler is worth the $15-$25 required for the coupon and it usually isn't- do you really need a cheap mug that says Kauai on it for $20? As is the case with most souvenirs on the Island, they are supplied in most stores and you can find most if not all of the items in Hilo Hatties at other stores for a cheaper price (Walmart, Spouting Horn, ABC, or Kapaa Market). I'll echo someone else's warning on the oyster shucking- it is a fleeting experience (picking out the oyster and waiting in anticipation to see what is inside) but in the end, you are left with an oyster that you can either put in a ridiculously overpriced setting or have placed in plastic bag that will sit in a drawer somewhere. read more
