JJ Ohana - mini shoyu chicken (available Sundays and Tuesdays)
    Jasmine W.

Despite all the changes going on in Hanapepe town, there are a few diamonds in the rough that have maintained their old-school, local charm. JJ Ohana is one of those places that makes you feel like you're taking a step back in time, which is refreshing given all the new eatereis and boutiques popping up along Hanapepe Road. The quaint shop serves both as a gift store and convenience store, with plentiful street parking all along Hanapepe Road and the nearby side streets. I was here purely for the food and did not poke around the gifts area, but from what I saw there were a number of local products to explore. Now if you appreciate solid local grinds, then all you need to know is shoyu chicken on Sundays and Tuesdays. Go earlier in the day, as I'd imagine they run out seeing that they cook their shoyu chicken in a good old household-sized crock pot. You can either pick a mini size (one big scoop rice, two thighs) or a regular size (three scoops rice, mac salad, 4+ thighs). We got one of each, and although I don't remember the exact cost of each plate the total was to the tune of $10-$11. Crazy good deal, given that the regular size alone would run that price if you were on Oahu. The shoyu chicken, by the way, was delicious! The meat was so soft, fall off the bone type, and they were very generous with the gravy. It also had that homey feel, like your parents or aunty and uncle made it. Definitely one of the better lunches I've had on Kauai! They have other specials during the week, so check the white board in the back of the counter or ask if you happen to be there on a non-shoyu chicken day. Also, plan on taking your lunches to-go, as there is no seating in the store (if you need a suggestion, Salt Pond Beach is a great place for a picnic!). As I mentioned, JJ Ohana is also like a convenience store - so you can pick up other snacks and drinks (both bottled and dispenser cups) for your day. Its a good place to get bag ice, as I think the price is still $1.25 for a decently sized bag that should last the whole day in a cooler. JJ Ohana also gets a shout out as it is probably one of only two or three stores along Hanapepe Road that does NOT stay open for the weekly Friday art night. So plan on stopping by during the day if you're are interested in checking out what they have to offer! TL;DR - joint gift/convenience store, closed during Friday art night, and ono shoyu chicken special!

As we…read morewere leaving one of the employees there "Georgia" actually followed us out to the sidewalk and accused my friend with taking a magazine. She said "I saw you pick it up" and "maybe you forgot you picked it up". This is a complete and utter lie. My friend was actually holding a magazine he had gotten across the street at Banana Patch Studio, a great local owned store. What happened at Lu.la was so rude, and appeared to be racially motivated. My friends are Hawaiian and I am Latino/asian. My friend's wife is one of the most respected physicians on the island and my friend is a noted photographer on Kauai. My wife is a doctor and I am an attorney. To be accused in such a rude manner was utterly unacceptable. The item in question is literally a local magazine available in every store on Kauai. We were given the magazine by the store owner from the shop across the street and walked into Lu.la. with it. Craziest thing is it is a free magazine available all over the island. The general what to do on Kauai you can get anywhere. When my friend spoke to the owner of Lu.la. about the incident, Angela the owner, instead of being apologetic, became hostile. She said "well you didn't buy anything" "is our apology not enough" very sarcastically. Like that was an excuse for their outrageous behavior. We actually left because their store was so hot and the products nothing special. This behavior is not acceptable on Kauai. This is what local Hawaiian's talk about being a problem on this island. The exact opposite of what you get when you shop at local owned businesses. Avoid this place! They do not reflect the values of the people of Kauai. Also, the entire conversation was recorded. My friend was not hostile. He was professional and spoke respectfully. We can and will upload the recording if Lu.la denies their hateful behavior. This kind of conduct anywhere is awful and has to be called out since the owner would take no responsibility for their employees woeful conduct. This store opposite of aloha in every way and not friendly or authentic in any way.

We've passed by this shop over a few dozen times over the years & decided to give it a go. The items are handmade from the Koa tree that is found in Hawaii. There are pens, jewelry, bags/purses, wallets, key chains, cutlery, ornaments, vases, kitchen items & other curious artwork displayed for sale. Candace was manning the shop & she was so friendly & welcoming. She even suggested a lady who might be able to create what we're looking for. This lady works from home & has a website (Tropical Isle Music). I love to support local businesses & Candace was so charming, I bought a couple of Aloha Hula girl ornaments & a pineapple (see photo) ornament. There's a few spaces for parking that it shares with Mankoa & a granola shack. It was lovely speaking with Candace, who I learned is actually half Filipino & half Japanese, born & raised in Kaua'i. Her grandfather was one of the first Filipinos who arrived from the Philippines to work in the plantations in Hawaii. It's always interesting to learn about people & their heritage. I'm very pleased with the experience & my purchases at this shop
