Artists are wonderful! Person who handles special orders: not so much. Ordered a piece 6 1/2 weeks before arriving on island. We were very specific about the date we would arrive. When we went to pick it up, they said there was no record of the order or the payment. This was cleared up, and (luckily) there was time to have it made. We had to cancel a planned excursion and drive an hour back to the store (and an hour back to the condo) to pick up the piece four days later. I understand that mistakes happen. But good customer service would have been to offer us something for the time lost, gas used, and excursion missed. A free tile, coffee mug, or free shipping would have shown that we were appreciated as customers. We have purchased many items from them over the past 20 years or so, but this experience has left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

They also have a good collection of original art, giclee, and prints by different artists. Cute store on the ground floor in Gaylord's at Kilohana. This shop is filled with art and ceramics and all kinds of Kauai souvenirs. Need to spend time to look at everything so as not to miss something special! I found wonderful 5"×7" notecards by Kauai artist Joanna Carolan that feature local flowers with mejiro or white eye birds in many of them, hiding in the foliage. Woo hoo! read more

If you want to see something really elegant and magical..... check out the bathroom. I know I sound crazy, but the tile work in there around the sink is like an expressive lovely jewel! This store opened in 1991 in Kauai and then moved its location to Hanapepe in 2003. The owner, Joanna Carolan, was so nice to come out and talk story with me. Joanna has a passion for art and is an artist who is very calming and wants visitors to be able to take something with them that is lovely, unique and expressive of Kauai culture. As a local here on Kauai I have enjoyed Art Walk on Friday evenings for many years- Banana Patch Studio is a must see on the street! This studio has diverse items for your purchase: jewelry, watercolor art, honu (sea turtle) decorations, soaps, rooster/chicken decorum and a relaxing area to listen to island music on cozy pink couches. I still buy things from this store and I live here- they have really unique items that you can't buy in your larger stores for cheap. (With the exception of Candle Company Soaps) Please check out their instrument section in the first room. My kids love the flutes, drums & shakers that not only look beautiful but make great sounds too. Next to the music area are my favorite creatures: chickens! I love how this store has dedicated a beautiful section to them. They have fantastic hand painted mugs (bought one last night), wood roosters for decoration and other country cooking items that will lighten up your home. I enjoy the layout of the store and the sheer amount of choices I have here. Yes, some may say it is expensive.... uhhhhh news flash: Hawaii is expensive...... Rent for stores are very expensive for the owners who are brave enough to offer something to the public and its fantastic tourists. When you go to shopping centers in Kauai like Coconut Market Place in Kapaa, Poipu Shopping Center and Kukui Grove Shopping Center- please view all the store fronts that have nothing in them. It is very sad that the rent in these centers are very high and can't sustain business-which means less eye candy and shops for us consumers. Hanapepe has been able to sustain their fantastic street of unique galleries and shops, in spite of the high rent. This has been one of my favorite stores on this island for at least 4 years now and I am glad I can Yelp! about it. read more

This was one of my favorite places to visit in Kauai! The staff are all so nice (especially the puppies) and they have such a unique selection of products, showcasing a lot of amazing local talent. I bought a vase and dried flowers to take home to California and they packaged it so carefully so it wouldn't get damaged on the plane. I can't wait to visit again! read more

Looking for a great souvenir? This IS the place. We bought two coffee mugs here. One is the Napali Coast barrel mug and the other the Yellow Plumeria cone style mug. Now when we get home we can still have a piece of Aloha with us. I will be sipping on Toasted Coconut coffee. If you go to the Northshore location and you're lucky you will meet "Sebastian" (not his real name) He's a fun guy who enjoys what he does and has great banter. Seems like every time we go there, he's working. He makes the shopping a lot of fun with his one liners. I always stop by to see what's new and to enjoy Sebastian's company. This is a great store if you're looking for some kind of Hawaiian souvenir when on a vacation. They have a lot of unique little craft pieces with a lot of ceramic and pottery included. They have coffee mugs and teapots, but I'd say the biggest selling point for my wife was the ceramic tiles. You see them around Hawaii, but this place by far has the biggest selection of them. My wife ended up seriously considering a couple of them, one with a Hawaiian blessing and one with a cat theme that said something like "Aloha is like meow, it has many meanings." We didn't end up buying anything from the store on this visit and weren't able to make it back before we left, but we'd definitely be picking things up from here if we ever ended up back on Kauai. read more

Yelp 100 Challenge 100 It was a hot day when we walked past this wonderful store. My hubby noticed a comfy chair and I felt the air conditioning beckoning so in we went. What a terrific little store packed with colorful artwork! The pottery is simply beautiful and they have an amazing collection of Hawaiian tiles. The lady behind the counter was so helpful. You know those little ceramic tiles you see all over Hawaii? The ones that say things like, "Mahalo for removing your shoes," and "I'd rather be on Kaua'i"? This is where they come from. Seriously, there is the vastest supply ever here. If beach-house-esque ceramic is your thing, Banana Patch is for you. Like plumeria? You can get them on a teapot. Turtles your thing? How about a serving platter featuring the little guys? If beach-house-esque ceramic *isn't* your thing -- like it isn't so much mine -- you'll have to dig a little deeper to find the goods here. You can. Jewelry, home goods, Christmas ornaments, oil paintings, brass bas reliefs. Last visit we walked away with a really lovely bamboo cutting board. This time we didn't see much that struck our fancy, tho, so I guess the ever-changing inventory is hit-or-miss. This place is absolutely amazing. Located in the small artists' town of Hanapepe, this little shop has been a necessary stop whenever we visit Kauai. Every year, my mom buys a new tile and hangs it up on the wall. Each tile is handmade and is so unique and beautiful. There is also a lot of other handmade items like ceramic tableware items and jewelry the latter being the section that I usually gravitate towards. I absolute adore this little shop and while the items can be a bit pricey, they are absolutely worth it as you are not going to find any of these items in the many ABC stores woven throughout the island. If you are staying on Kauai, you should definitely stop by as the island is only so big and this little town has a lot to offer. read more

Such pretty Hawaiian things. Especially like the signs to help your guests remember to "please leave your shoes and worries at the door." Doubling as a studio and a retail store, Banana Patch features handcrafted jewelry, kitchenware and pottery. The prices are reasonable, considering that most items are locally made. You can't find better prices; Hawaii is generally pretty expensive. There's definitely a lot of charm when you walk into the main room; the side rooms have even better surprises! Even the saleslady started dancing the hula as she was moving around the room. It's really hard to describe the good 'mauna' with words - a must-stop if you're in the area! read more

The people at this gallery are A+ human beings. I'd dropped my wallet in a nearby parking lot, and someone gave it to them. They went above and beyond to find me on Facebook, called my hotel (hotel key was in the wallet), and then ran outside when they saw me walking by their shop. Horrible! Wrecked my night in Hanapepe. This shop, like many others in Hanapepe, is a con. The tiles are screenprinted, not hand-painted. You might watch someone paint tiles through the glass, but it's just for show... so they can rip-off unsuspecting tourists. Hanapepe gives the arts a bad name. The Hawaiian tourism council should look into the business practices of the individual shops in this town... starting with the Banana Patch Studio. Utter garbage. read more

Wow, I love this little store. How can you resist the ubiquitous "Mahalo for removing your shoes" tiles? But even if you don't care for those, this place has so many beautiful things in it - great variety of tiles, wooden bowls, straw bags, jewelry etc. Not tacky, souvenir stuff, but nice things I'd buy even if I wasn't on vacation. The workers are friendly, they'll ship stuff to the mainland, and there's a corner of comfy sofas and benches outside for the non-shoppers who want to chill while you shop. Some of the things in here are quite pricey (like Niihau shell jewelry), but there are lots of little, affordable things as well. read more

We just moved to Kalaheo. One of my favorite stores is the Banana Patch Store in Hanapepe. Angelica is the sweetest and most patient employee. She is a hard worker! I would've given the shop 5 stars however during the Coffee and Chocolate festival she was the sole employee working. She never complained once, especially when the crowds were thick in there.
