When I went to Kauai last, October, my niece and I walked by tropical tantrum and went inside to check out the gorgeous looking sundresses. I love the Tropical Tantrum clothing line, and I really wish I could find the perfect dress for myself because their clothing is so beautiful. On this trip to Hanalei, I had to see what was new because it had been at least 7 years since I had been on island. My only complaint about the clothing line itself is that their spaghetti strap dresses do not contain a shelf bra, so if you are on the bigger chest side of the spectrum, this may be difficult unless you have a really good strapless bra. From the moment I walked in, I was met with some high-pressure sales which was a major turn off. I have tried on their dresses before, but they are just not flattering on my body type. I am not fond of strapless bras because they tend to smash large breasts, and are too hot to wear, especially in the humidity of Kauai. Their line is stunning, and they have beautiful shirts for men as well. The dresses come with pockets which is a plus, but their items are extremely pricey, at $239+ per dress. Once again, I left empty handed due to the high-pressure sales, high prices, and lack of shelf bra incorporated into their dresses. I therefore I opted to wear a beautiful and colorful spaghetti strap dress with pockets and a shelf bra from Marshalls for $29.99 and still looked stunning. There is a location in Kapa'a as well. I've never been to the Tropical Tantrum on the Big Island, however, I used to stay on Maui For some years. There was a Tropical Tantrum at the Queens Mall on Maui. I bought a few outfits there. Beautiful ! Unique, colorful, & Fabulous ! 1 was a long pencil skirt & matching crop top. Another was a beautiful crop top that buttoned up the front, with matching pants. I treasure my outfits made by Tropical Tantrum !! I've never seen anything on the mainland even resembled my outfits ! ( which I Love ) I don't care to see other women wearing the same thing Iam. I bought two quality dresses with jackets at this store today. Yeah, it was pricey, but the quality is worth it. The material and workmanship is from Indonesia and all the design is done in Hanalei. It's bamboo fabric. The designs are interesting. I like it that the dresses have different options like scarves and matching jackets as I tend to cover up. The saleswoman was very helpful. I know some reviewers find them to be too pushy but they are actually really good at what they do. She suggested other options, which can sometimes annoy me since I like to shop unassisted. But, by suggesting something I wouldn't have thought of on my own I wound up with a whole other outfit. I like the unique design and comfort of the clothing and am very much looking forward to wearing it. read more

So, this place is pricey! BUT, it's well worth it and the service is great. First off, I am a plus-sized woman and my husband is a plus-sized dude, so we are always a little wary of going into clothing shops that don't specifically cater to our size needs - it's usually disappointing and often the salespeople can be rude about size - but Vicky at Tropical Tantrum put us at ease, found me a gorgeous dress that fits like it was custom made for me, and found equally beautiful gifts for my mother and my mom-in-law. While it was pricey, since we were purchasing so much, she also threw in several free items, and was SO nice and chatty. It was a great experience, and now I have a gorgeous dress to wear to dinner tonight! Win/win! read more

Didn't buy anything, but spent a decent amount of time in here looking for something remotely in our budget and found no such thing. Dresses were beautiful but horribly overpriced- I kept looking through the tags for something-anything!- under $100 and failed to do so (sale rack is the only exception here, but it's clear why it's on sale as it had a scarce selection of sizes and odd-ball items of no interest to us). Maybe we'll come back after we make enough money to justify spending that much on what was originally meant to be casual daytime attire. The store was cool, well-ventilated and the cashier looked busy helping other patrons try on items, so as for service, can't say we personally got to experience that much. read more

We live in Lihue and wanted to buy a few special gifts for friends. Due to the virus, Marriott location was closed. Kapaa store was being renovated. So drove to Hanalei shop where we were waited on by Anahita. She is a wonderful salesperson! She greeted us warmly (something which rarely happens in local shops these days) and then proceeded to give us her utmost attention. With her help we selected just the right items and are super pleased. Yes the store is expensive but the quality of merchandise is really top notch. If anyone says you can get the same kinds of merchandise cheaper elsewhere, they must be looking at knockoffs. Anyway, the highest praise for Anahita and we highly recommend! read more

I went in here today after lunch with my boyfriend. I own many dresses and skirts of similar styles and know what size I am in them. The saleswoman showed me a few dresses that were 2-3 sizes larger than I normally wear and that I KNOW wouldn't have fit me. I told her they were pretty and continued shopping on my own. She then said "I'm not really sure what size would be best" and i told her I usually wear a small or medium. In a very condescending tone she replied: "Not in our stuff. I think you need an XL." I walked right out and didn't bother to try anything on. There is nothing wrong with being an XL, but I am not and I felt disrespected to see her sizing me up and down and judging my body when I never once asked her for help or sizing recommendations. If you are in Hanalei, please take your business elsewhere. There are many other amazing stores! The saleswoman who was working today could use some retail 101. The atmosphere is magical! The people are enchanting! The clothing, colors and wares are blissfully beautiful. (No, I wasn't under the influence of stimulants imbibed.) The last time I was here, we had our two daughters over the holidays. The kids and my husband had me model outfits and that was my Christmas gift complete with a lovely dress, shoes and wrap. I had come to Hanalei a few more times and hadn't visited in several years. This time, I came in a rush. I got a batik that I needed for a healing workshop. It was a masterpiece of artwork and enhanced the experience for all participants. Later that week, we stopped in after having a wonderful meal across the street. The ladies and I bought dresses, tops, purses and shirts for husbands and had a wonderful time. We iced it off with a selection of their jewelry. They also have bedding, too, which I noticed have the wonderful colors in them. I'll look into changing my bedroom next time. If you want to have a delicious indulgence of the senses and look good too, don't miss coming to the shop. The owner, Parker, is a kick, too! I had a horrifying experience in this store. While I was shopping I pulled some clothes to the size. I generally wear a size 12/14 in women's. I looked at the larges - they looked small. I looked at the XL and it also looked small. I walked over to a different rack and got excited about a two piece ensemble that looked like it would be flattering on my body. When I asked the saleswoman if they had other fabrics in that two piece cut, she told me "well that's not going to fit you because it's a medium" and "maybe the skirt will because it's stretchy but you're going to have a hard time fitting into this top because it's a medium." I had already put two pieces of clothing in the dressing room to try on. She told me three or four times that I shouldn't try on this set because it "wouldn't fit me." I am a seasoned vintage shopper and buy clothes without sizes on them multiple times a month. I think I know what fits me. I put the clothes down, said thank you and left without trying anything on. For a store that has a sign that says "we have your size XS to 4X" on the outside, they're def hiring the wrong saleswoman. I was deeply shocked and offended to be body shamed in a flowy clothing store in Hanalei. They missed out on $300 of revenue tonight. read more

My cousin and I were shopping in the Hanalei store in May, and both of us ended up buying a beautiful kimono. I took mine with me, and he custom ordered a kimono to be made in Bali, which when it arrived in California did not fit - it was way too small, despite Julie measuring him. ... the reason for the one star is that despite numerous calls, emails, letters, and returning the too small kimono over the course of a month, no one at Tropic Tantrum returns emails, calls, letters, or the return of the too small kimono . I'm now disputing the credit card charge. What really disappoints me is that I return every year to Kauai and usually buy from either the Kapaa or Hanalei locations, and they have lost me as a customer. So ... buyer beware. Beautiful rich in hue fabrics with glitz, and fabrics so soft and sheer, dresses fancy, short, long, every color of the rainbow, and then some! I went in this store three different times while I was here, I just couldn't help to take in the colors and feel of the fabrics. Each time I kept seeing this one dress, and even though more than I really wanted to spend, I just couldn't help myself. It seemed to be calling to me, and since it was there the third time it just had to be mine! They really only have one of a kind stuff somethings are on the same fabric but the styles etc.. are all different, different cuts, lengths beading etc... I knew if I left the island without it I'd regret not buying that dress! And now I'll just have to cringe when the credit card bill comes due! read more

I highly recommend shopping at Tropical Tantrum next time you go to Kauai. They have the most beautiful clothing in every color you can imagine. I bought a dress for myself and a shirt for my husband both of which are stunning. I have to give a shout out to one of the owners, Parker Price. He is truly amazing. I got home and found that my husbands shirt wasn't in the bag with my dress ( it was accidentally left at the store) and when I emailed their customer service about this Parker responded immediately and said he would look into it. Within a couple of days he said he found the shirt and had it sent to me! Most other customer service departments would have just said there would be nothing they could do but not Parker- he took care of it. Many of the dresses started at 25.00, perfectly priced. Of course they had many racks of beautiful dresses, some about 100.00 but so well made it seemed a fair price to me. My first order was fun and easy to do, the choices were hard to pick from, as all the patterns and colors were so vivid and unusual ..the dresses arrived quickly,and were better in person, but my mistake that I didnt order the correct size ..I quickly returned them with the new size order , knowing I was on a tight deadline to get them back, and you surpassed all my expectations of service..They fit perfectly, the quality of the workmanship , and the colors are super! BUYER BEWARE: The clothing is beautiful but please do not buy anything that you are not sure of!! I was given several promises by my sales person that I could exchange clothing I bought as gifts and after 3 emails and 3 phone calls with no returns whatsoever I am stuck with very expensive shirts that do not fit!! Don't bother using their website or calling their customer service line- no one returns the emails or the calls! I bought over $700 worth of clothing with $300 that doesn't fit. I have to agree with Lisa Ann. Their dresses are seriously wonderful. It is the kind of place where a mermaid from the right side of town would shop. We spotted it on our way to Hanalai Gourmet for lunch. As soon as we ordered our food we sat down on the outdoor patio just to the side of this shop when I begged off from my husband to go shopping. I was initially attracted to a different dress, but then discovered one in kind of the same fabric, but put together completely differently with mellow tasty sequins-- not too many--that fit my shape better. I wore the dress outside to show my husband who gave me a thumbs up and an offer to buy it for me for our anniversary. After lunch we went back, and when I was trying to decide (yes, it is expensive) the owner offered me a beautiful shell ring which you get free when you buy a dress. I wore the dress twice to dinner while on the island and felt like a princess in it. Additionally, the price included a hair scrunchy to match. All in all it was well worth it. I will wear it everyplace tropical henceforth and it will be a motivator not to gain weight. read more

Because of her my wife made me wait to buy a shirt in Kapaa, so the older Blond would not get credit for making a sale. Fan-TAS-Tic! A riot of color, GREAT selection of dresses and accessories (even in plus sizes up to 5X in some cases). I was giggling like a schoolgirl, trying on one dress after another and ended up buying two...one in Hanalei and one in Kapa'a, plus two wraps and earrings and a couple of their "KnoKnots" that help turn those wraps into collars/sleeves for when you want more coverage. I spent a lot more than I usually spend on clothing (I'm a Goddwill devotee), and my friend bought THREE dresses for her daughter....worth every penny. The dresses are attractive, comfortable and unique (style 1455 is particularly flattering), with lots of nice "custom" touches like bone buttons and beaded zipper pulls. And the rayon fabric (I believe someone said it is sourced from bamboo and coconut shells) is soft, drapey and lucious. Not the cheap, flimsy stuff you'll see a lot of Hawaiian wear made of. When you consdier spending $50 for a mass produced, off-the-rack and very boring dress against $90-$150 for one of these CREATIONS....man, FIND THE STORE and GET THE GOOD STUFF.
