Should have done more research before coming here. Grocery poke is surprisingly good in Hawaii, so tried to find the nearest supermarket near our hotel in Kauai. Our lunch on Day 3 had been a bust, so decided to eat in more and get needed supplies. I knew that Safeway was affiliated with Albertson's, which I THOUGHT owned Foodland (which has great poke)...so came here and bought other stuff (cause we were already there). Later found out that my assumption was incorrect. The employees here are tired of tourists, I think. The woman at the seafood counter (which has a small poke section), acted like she was doing me a favor when I asked for the rest of the fresh hawaiian style poke. When I asked how good the from-frozen ahi poke was, she mumbled something unintelligible. Cashiers don't have to be friendly but should be at least respectful, and appear as if trying The lane was open, so it wasn't too busy. She barely acknowledged us but did scan each item without being asked (and we were self self bagging). But then there was a pause to push the process to start the payment process. Then another long pause after I had entered my credit card. Then another pause to print receipt. Then finally after printing, she grabbed the receipt without looking at it and just stuck out her hand AT me to grab without looking at me. The last two actions were happening while she was having a funny (to her) conversation with a co-worker. Not good when two employees together are acting like this without shame. A part of me wanted to lightly slap her receipt-holding hand and tell her "Didn't your mama teach you manners?". Purchases: -- 2 bagels ($1.19 each) -- small Lucerne milk ($2.89) -- small cream cheese ($5.99) -- fresh (not frozen) ahi tuna ($29.99 per pound, paying $21.29). -- six pack can of Maui Brew Mango Beer ($14.99 with Dep fee of $0.30 -- PB Blondie Bestie ice cream from Ben and Jerry, pint for $4.99 (normally $8.99 but on sale so very good price...needed to download the Safeway app since my Von's or Albertson's card doesn't work...had good free wi-fi in store). read more

Sold clean well stocked store. Staff are friendly and know where everything can be found. The floral department is expensive but nice. Definitely some of the best stocked liquor departments of any grocery store on island. read more

Walking into the floral department at Safeway started out as a very nice encounter. I was only looking for a congratulations balloon and 2 regular balloons. The Mylar balloon was $6.99. Two regular balloons $3.99 each. The lady was friendly. She helped me pick out the Mylar Congratulations Ballon. Way Cool Colors. She attempted to up sale me to a 5 ballon bundle for $24. I declined because I truly only needed 3. Then her attitude changed. I'm not cheap. I'm not purchasing more than I need because you want to make a sale. If I didn't need them right now, I would have just left and went somewhere else. Sad but not sorry. Just disappointed. read more

Clean store fully stocked with everything you might need. Organized like a typical grocery market on the mainland. Produce was pretty good, both the fruits and vegetables. Be prepared for island prices, very high. You will find that at every grocery market though. read more

This is a message for management. Please train your staff on safe food handling. On two different occasions: First, poke counter. The employee guy gives the customer a sample. When she was done, he offered to take her toothpick back IN HIS BARE HANDS and then didn't wash his hands before serving me. Gross. Second, the deli counter lady was loading chicken in bags on $5 chicken day. Goes to fill order from pasta salad area WITHOUT REMOVING GLOVES. If not only cross contamination was a concern, the container was dirty with chicken grease as she handed it to me. I didn't say anything but please. They're all nice people. Just, please train them. Now for the reason I still voted 4 stars. Your staff hussles and they're all friendly (so far). The new girl in the deli needs better situational awareness but the aunties and the braddah is always on their game. The bread from bakery is bomb and dangerously good. The store is clean, bright and stocked very well like any Safeway, Vons or Albertsons. Your Vons club rewards work in Safeway. The food items provided in the aisles gave customers lots of options. Check out the special local options like Kōloa rum, Hawaiian juice, fresh poke or Hawaiian chips. This store has great parking and we loved it. Prices were kind of high on a few items. read more

A very simple service issue. After looking at the Safeway app, which indicated the product I wanted was available for pickup and on the shelf, I spent a good 10 minutes walking up and down isle 16 but could not find it. I approached the manager who quickly asked someone else to help me. The someone else said "If you can't find it we don't have it!" Hmmm. Clearly, she might've been right. She also could've been wrong. That's why I was asking for help. I'm not very good at finding things. She had no interest in going to the aisle with me and looking. I really cannot stand the store. I've lived here for 31 years. It's overpriced and there is no service. By the way, I went to Big Save in Koloa and found the product I wanted and it was much cheaper anyway, Carroll Shelby's Original Texas Chili Kit. read more

Ordered a custom decorated bday cake and was very disappointed. Why have a catalog of decoration choices if it doesn't come out like what is shown. Icing was something I could have done at home. At least the cake was delicious. read more

When you first walk in, you're greeted with glairs by the stocking staff. I asked to use the restroom at one point, and they told me to go outside. I later learned they meant the porta potty located outside, either way, I just held it. Their selection is very limited, and most everything is scattered everywhere. They do not have enough cashiers and the line takes about 30 mins for checkout. Make sure to allocate that into your grocery trip! After checkout, we were packing out purchases into our car and whitnessed a whole fistfight in the parking lot. I was also able to see that the same employee's that were stocking were now outside, smiling at the fight and not calling for help. Epic! read more

A good grocery on the way to your end destination whether it's down south towed Poipu or to the north towed Princeville. Good selections of staples, and if you're lucky they'll have the bbq pork buns that are so yummy for us 'hood boys who grew up on 'em. They do have boars head meats at the deli and some nice platters of meat/cheese/crackers as well. The fruit selection however seemed to be a bit picked over in a Sunday though. read more

What a great store with lots of Hawaiian fare. Next to Costco. Try their Poki bar at the sea food counter. Has a Starbucks and ATM. The deli counter is really well stocked as well. read more

Staying in a private condo we needed to get groceries and Safeway was the best choice. Everything you'd find on the mainland at prices that aren't bad considering this is Hawaii. Good Poke too especially their version that is not previously frozen. Salmon steaks - all good. Produce was fresh too. We tried a Kauai based brand of Kombucha that was refreshing and nice. read more

Wow! This Safeway is so trendy with a Starbucks in the market, has an ample area to eat or drink nearby with tables and chairs plus restrooms too. Nice place to plug in and work on your lap top or read the paper while your significant other shops or just to relax. Wish the Safeway in my neighborhood could become trendy and updated like this. They say the grass is always greener but it's actually true- this Safeway was planned and designed ahead of the game. Another saying is be careful what you wish for but yes, I'd like a Starbucks and restrooms in our Safeway too. Review for Poke. Umm... it was like going to the 31 Flavors ice cream shop, except it was for Poke. There were so many to choose from! We ended up buying 3 different tubs of poke to bring back to eat with the family. And it tasted good!!!! A few buckets of poke brought home with rice, salad, and other items to eat will go a long way. We had it again with our breakfast the next day. Poke with scrambled eggs and bacon? Not much to really say about Safeway except the store was clean, cashier was friendly and the prices seem to be fair. Just picked up some orange juice, chips, bread and water....essential items for the morning hours. Surprisingly I saw a few EV chargers in the parking lot....I can't wait to see what type of EV vehicles are here on Kauai. read more

I think this is the first time, we shopped this Safeway, while have been in Kauai for less than 10 years! They have everything we needed, just like the Safeway down the street from our mainland house. Need I say more? I love Safeway back home in the Bay Area, so I'm happy to report that the Safway in Kauai is just as good. They even had this giant baked brie thing that I've never seen, but I wish we had that over in the Bay Area. This location is on the larger side and they pretty much have everything you need Safeway style. Good donuts, deli, cheese, wine, the whole shabang. Overall, a great places for supplies without being price gauged at any of the resorts. Thumbs up. read more

This is for Safeway in kapaa. I would not recommend ordering on line from this store. They must not pay attention to orders or their system is screwed up. I ordered a birthday cake and flowers at least 5 days before the birthday party. Bakery called me the day of pick up and told me they didn't have what I wanted, 4 hours before pick up time. They were accompanying in letting me know what was available and told me they didn't get the order until that morning. It was a themed birthday cake for my grandson's 2nd. After a lot of time and deciding she hand drew the decoration and I ended up with a cupcake cake. Good thing she was nice and helpful but when it came to the flowers, forget it! No one was in that department. They sent a high school guy to help me who knew nothing. The office worker finally came out. She was awful. Didn't know anything about the order. Even tho the bakery had a copy of the order. I said forget the orchids ( a gift for the Mom). While I was checking out and paying for the cake, another worker came out. He had a copy of the order. I had already spent one hour waiting around. I told him to forget the flowers and left with a cake that cost $3 more then the one I originally ordered. I'd say they don't know how to handle online orders. Was kind of frustrating, to say the least! read more

Its really sad where we have gotten. I go to customer service desk to send money and out of the blue the lady was very rude. Even though I have not said anything yet. And she proceeded to be very aggressive for no reason whatsoever. Her coworker noticed and shakes her head. I still cant comprehend why would somone for no reason whatsoever be rude and aggressive. I grew up with Safeway in Honolulu and it's a grocery store chain that is near and dear to my heart. This location looks and feels spanking new- it's got all the regular stuff a grocery store is supposed to have, in addition to a Starbucks, hot deli, and cold deli, and amazing local produce and seafood sections (so many kinds of POKE!). It's a normal stop for locals to do weekly shopping but a treat for visitors to shop at because it will have all your needs covered for your vacation, with a twist of things you wouldn't find in your own city. read more

This store rates so low because they have long lines. Aside from that it has above average selection of items and well stocked. The poke folks were on it when it came to getting us our many small variety of items. I think prices are good compared to some other grocery stores like Living Foods Market being the highest priced store. Only thing lacking was the check out lines- much too long and only had three cashiers open. read more

The last 3-4 times I've been Safeway Lihue I've had horrible experiences. Lines are always very, very long. The staff aren't helpful or friendly. Food is "not available" at 5:30 in the afternoon and I purchased ice cream from them that was inedible. The ice cream did have some freezer burn on it when I purchased it but I didn't expect it to be so bad that I couldn't eat it and the selection was so small I had to choose between freezer burn or a flavor I didn't like. When I opened the ice cream it was obvious that it had been melted and then frozen maybe multiple times and I could see some grayish discoloration around the edges of the cup. One of my recent trips there was late at night so I expected it to be a quick run to get a few household items. I believe it was 9:30 PM and I didn't realize just how long the line was until I went to check out. There was only 1 register open and there must have been at least 15 people in line. Before I got in line, I checked to see if the self checkout was available and I saw one green light on indicating that there was one open. When I got closer I saw the staff had barricaded the entrance to the self checkout area with a few large chip displays. I'm not sure what this was all about but it made me very frustrated, if your location is suffering from a staff shortage then why not use these resources to allow your customers to buy their items? Right next to the self checkout area on the other side of the barricade I saw two employees casually standing next to each other talking and laughing. It made me wonder what their assigned job was and if they were supposed to be watching the self checkout area but had decided instead to close it up for reasons I don't know. I decided to leave my items and go home instead of waiting in a line that long. Just a few minutes ago I ended up doing the exact same thing when I walked into Safeway at around 5:30 PM to pick up some salt and vinegar chicken drumsticks that my coworker had recently recommended to me. I walked up to the hot food area and I saw plenty of drumsticks but I didn't see any labels on any of the food. I didn't see anyone behind the counter so I asked an employee who was walking by if there was any salt and vinegar chicken available to which he very rudely pointed at a printed out paper sign that was taped to the top of an empty hot food bar where they usually have chicken wings available and said "we are out of food already, read the sign". I would have purchased some fried chicken even if it wasn't the salt and vinegar flavor that I wanted if the employee wasn't so rude. I was also thirsty and considered buying a vitamin water or something like that to drink but when I glanced at the very, very long line of people waiting to pay I just left. Im not sure if this will reach anyone who manages this Safeway location but if it does. Please do something. Thanks! read more

Recently, maybe 6 months, they hired a young woman who actually knows what she is doing. The fish is defrosted in a fridge, Japanese way, the poke cut into 3/8ths even cubes, properly labelled, properly mixed. It is as good as the Foodland poke. It is now are "too go" place. If only she can keep those "butchers" away from the fish. I now can tell when she has done the cutting and mixing and when the others have. We can tell when the defrosting has been done correctly. I buy hers. My wife can also tell immediately. We have been eating poke since it was aku and only home made. Wish aku was still offered read more

Customers queued in checkout lanes 10 - 15 deep is unacceptable. Only half the checkout lanes were open. Oh, and please train the deli people to peel back the wrapper on the salami before slicing it. It's gotten to the point where I cannot go into Safeway Lihue without having to deal with a long line of people with only a few cashiers available. There's no self check out and the 15 & under item lanes are filled 12 people deep (with carts filled to the brim). Three times this month I went to buy two items (took me less than 3 mins to grab) while I stood in a line for over 15 mins. Never a manager in site. Too many locals and returning visitors are getting fed up with the situation. Unless something changes soon I predict people will start shopping at Times instead. Sorry but my time is valuable & I don't have time to stand in lines like this. The poor cashiers have to take the brunt of the customers complaints & their frustrations.
