Excellent food! I grew up in NJ, but now live in Southern CA, where unfortunately, the Italian food leaves much to be desired (there are few exceptions...). My family and I make it a point to come here when I'm in town. The food is typically very good (the most recent time I had Chicken Murphy, and the Tri Colore Salad as a starter), both were fabulous!! The portions are a very good size as well, probably enough to take home. I would highly recommend! read more

Tried this place for a late lunch with my girlfriend yesterday, it was amazing. The Service was impeccable, and the ambiance was even better. We ordered the calamari as an appetizer, the chicken marsala, and the chicken francais, and topped it off with the Molten Chocolate Cake for dessert. Wanted to take the in-laws out for dinner before they left back to Cali. Decided to give Cosimo's a try and so happy that we did!!!! When you walk in it looks average but then you get taken around the corner of the restaurant that opens up to a cute little fireplace right in the middle of the dining room and the restaurant instantly becomes cozy! Our server was amazing, so sweet and helpful with suggestions of the best things to try on the menu. I had the cheese ravioli YUM, husband had the lasagna YUMM, the mom-in-law had the baked Ziti Sicilian style (suggested by our server) YUMMMMM!!!! read more

We ate at Cosimos last year and thought it was pretty good. The weather was nice this weekend so we gave it another visit. What we did not like; the sauce is just average nothing special, we ordered a large salad to share for 8.95, it was more like for one and all it had was two cucumbers and a piece of red pepper along with the sparse amount of lettuce, my cup smelled very musty. Stay far away. I was going to stay mum, but after reading these other reviews and taking my own experience into account, I decided to let 'er rip! I responded to an employment ad, and was asked to work for a day to see how I liked it and how they liked me. I spoke to them "up front " the absolute minimum wages I expected (which werent cheap because I have 20 years experience...) so we wouldn't waste each other's time. Out of about 25 employees (not counting wait staff), I was the only one who spoke English. Not going to rant about illegals, etc., but even the line cooks spoke no English. The place appears to be run by the children of the owners. The so-called manager (one of the Owner's sons...) literally stands there in the front all day, ignoring phones and customers, and watches his investment portfolio on a computer screen. After working a 13 + hour shift breaking my ass, I was whisked out back by the same owner/manager to discuss my full time wages. He then proceeded to offer me about half of what I told him was my minimum. I was so offended, I was beyond mad. Instead, I decided to play him out and get my revenge for having 13+ hours of my time wasted in such a fashion. I accepted the job and agreed to a full time schedule, and promptly "no-showed" the very next day. I then tried to call several times to collect the dough they owed me for the day I worked, and they refused to pay me. I know I did a shitty thing by misleading them. But you know what? Touche! Don't have me work all day when I tell you I am looking for $900-$1,000 a week and knowing this you offer me $500. Obviously, they are used to paying slave wages to poor immigrants who have little choice in the matter and cannot complain. Spend your money at one of the other local establishments that actually pays wages and treats their employees decently. Besides, the whole wheat crust is frozen garbage, like most of the rest of their food. A real shame, because all indications were that this was once a decent place before mom and pop decided to retire and turn it over to the kids to run into the ground... read more

My husband is 100% Italian and from north Jersey...so we're pretty picky. If this restaurant was in north NJ I'd give it 3 stars...but since it is the best option I know of in Union County I have to give it 4 stars. I love the Black Ocean pasta. The mussels and calamari are both great as an appetizer. My husband goes more for the chicken and pasta dishes and he's never been disappointed. I would avoid the specials...that's the only time I've been disappointed. Go to Bovella's (across the street) for cappuccinos and dessert. The waitress asked if we were sure we wanted to have dessert there...which convinced me never to try a Cosimos' dessert! read more

I've been around the country and Cosimo's has the best pizza. Fine cheese, home made sauce, and the right kind of crust. Been going there for almost five years now and probably average two to three pizzas a month. They also have a house special vinaigrette for their salads that my wife likes so much I've sen her drink it when we order it on the side. I like their expanded dining area. read more

We have been to Cosimo's on multiple occassions over the past year and have never had a bad experience. My first visit was for pizza only and I can honestly say it was the best pizza I have ever had. The high quality ingredients and unique combination of spices had me wanting more. The next time I was in the area there wasn't any doubt where we were going for dinner. On this trip I took my father, the worlds pickiest eater of Italian food. I was raving about the pizza and Cosimo's menu entrees didn't disappoint. My father had the Eggplant Parm, which he said was cooked perfectly and tastes like home. My selection was easy because I always get Chicken Parm, but Cosimo's twist on this staple is second to none. Their use of panko bread crumbs, fresh mozzarella, along with Marianara/vodka combination was amazing. I would have shared it with my father, but I just couldn't part with it. Any other times I have visited Cosimo's it has been for take out food. Again I wasn't disappointed. The house dressing is great on salads, but even better on sandwich. The level of service and restaurant ambiance is just as important when going out to eat. In both of these areas Cosimo's exceeds our expectations. In summary, whether for dinner, lunch, or take out I highly recommend this restaurant to all. read more

I have been a loyal patron of Cosimo's for years, and haven't had a bad experience there, until now. I made dinner reservations for Friday night because I had family and friends in town. Everything was great up to the point our waitress had the audacity to tell me, " We have another large party waiting, and my boss asked me to tell you it's time to leave." I was appalled. We had just been served our coffee, and didn't even have the opportunity to finish. I phoned them after we left to say how terrible I thought they were to have asked us to leave, and the response I got was," I'm sorry you felt rushed, but you could have said you were not ready to go, and I never told her to say that." Really? The waitress should have never asked that of us in the first place. And the passive aggressive response was not appropriate. Will NEVER be going back again. They are not the only Italian restaurant in NJ, and they certainly are not the best. read more

BE VERY CAUTIOUS about ordering take-out. The take-out is just so-so but pricey, and there seems to be a habit of tucking in hidden charges. I recently was given a double charge on an "included" side item because the pasta was "special, special" as the manager stated, meaning whole wheat ($2 extra) and home-made (another $2 extra). The phone person suggested I try it but never informed me of the extra charges. When I called to inquire I was told too bad, the charge is listed on the menu. Well, it's not and the "manager" admitted she couldn't tell me where to find it on the menu but she refused to part with that $4 and was shockingly rude. I wish I could say it was the first time an extra charge was slipped in, but at least I can say it was the last time. They just lost one of their regular customers. read more

Cosimos has remodeled the restaurant and lower the quality of the food. First of all this is the worst version of Italian American food I have ever come across next to its cousin around the corner Ferraro's. I do not dare call either one Italian. However, if the locals want to entertain the families with a bland and mediocre rendition of Italian American food Go For It. Teach yourselves and children to eat Italian cuisine and honor what "NONA" would have cooked on daily basis. This place is as bland and commercial as they come. Oh yes: let's start with the pizza! Wow are they kidding with this version? You might as well go to trader joes and buy a frozen one it might be more authentic! Pasta over cooked, vegetables served with the fish special had seen better days before they were frozen. Shameful, the staff is loyal and tries to defend the food; but I am a professional food critic and places like this give Italian cuisine a bad rap! Do not call this Italian anything! Cosimos used to be our 'go to' place--NOT ANYMORE!! The food is still delicious, but the service is terrible. We went in June and the we thought the bad service was a fluke, but again this weekend we had a similar experience. Our order was messed up, and while these things do happen; they seem to be happening at Cosimos frequently. To compound matters, the waiter wasn't even apologetic or friendly. Then, he lectured us on appropriate tipping. We always tip at least 18-20%, but that is besides the point. He shared how if we didn't tip well, he wouldn't make any money. Really? We ate at Cosimo's last night (8/14/12). The early warning may have been the olive oil in the table's bottle: not good / not flavorful / definitely NOT extra virgin-first cold pressed. I accept that places that are also pizzerias won't pay for good bread from an outside source; I think they only used their pizza dough. - But my main was disappointing. It was panko-crusted and sauteed chicken breast covered with chopped salad. The chicken was overcooked and tough. The best part of my meal was the sauteed spinach. My partner knew enough to tell the waiter not to drown his fish dish in the sauce. - Supposed I should have stuck to what passes for Italian in N. J. - Yes, it's been spiffed up, but now can be incredibly noisy. And don't let whoever sits you stick you someplace you DON'T want to be when the place isn't crowded! Went here for my birthday a couple of months ago. Great place & fair prices! The restaurant is deceiving, because it looks smaller on the outside compared to the inside. The place is bigger than I expected. I would highly recommend for dinner if you are in the Westfield area. We booked a reservation for a Saturday night and it was well worth it, as the place does seem to fill up on a weekend night. They also do have a take out area when you walk in if you don't feel like dining in, but I am not sure if you can order the same items as the dine in menu. I got the Chicken Signature Parmigiana dish. Delicious! And if you get nervous if there will be enough food, like me, you will have more than enough with this dish. The portions are big sizes and the prices are fair for what you get. We also ordered the lobster mac & cheese & calamari for appetizers and they were perfect. Never had their food but I can tell you the service STINKS! Called them to ask if they deliver to my address which is on Terrill Road. They said yes. I called back to make the order and they said they don't deliver to Plainfield. I said Terrill road separates Scotch Plains and Plainfield. They said yeah thats out of our range. I said i just called 5 minutes ago and asked ifyou delivery to this address. he said yeah we don't deliver to Plainfield. I said scotch plains is right across the street. Excellent crab meat ravioli, linguine with white clam sauce, ceasar salad, hot subs, calamari and pizza! The only thing we didn't like is the pasta with bolognese sauce (barely any sauce.) We revisited Cosimo's last night with another couple. The food was good - once again I had the panzanella salad which was very good and their shrimp francaise which had big shrimp and a nice lemony saue. And for a rather gloomy winter night, the restaurant was packed. But the objection I had for this place before is still my objection. I guess they like to have a quick turnover but every two minutes the wait staff was at our table asking how was the food and as soon as one person's plate was finished, they began removing plates. read more

I've been eating is Cosimo's since it was just a pizzeria, and here's the strange thing: the food-food is actually much better than the pizza itself. Skip the pies and order any of the chicken dishes. They're a bit pricey, but the portions are huge! I've never had veal here, so I don't know how it is, but the chicken parm is great, and so are many of the other dishes. I also like the lunch specials. For ten dollars, you get a sandwich or pasta and a salad or fries. Pretty good deal. Service sucks, but what do you expect? read more

I love salad pizza- however, after waiting an hour for one that came with green-ish pink-ish tomatoes, I was not impressed. After asking for ripe tomatoes, the server (who was very nice) brought about 6 halved cherry tomatoes for a large pie, not nearly enough. So disappointed. My daughter loves this place so I guess we will get takeout if she really wants this pizza again. My coffee was good and the crust was actually great. Wow, I've been going to Cosimos for 15 years now and I can't recall ever having a bad experience here. Their prices are very reasonable for Westfield and the food is authentic italian done right! Their huge menu has something for everybody and the service is always great, however, if you show up around 5-6pm you WILL be waiting for a table. read more

Love this place! We have been coming here since 1996 when it was a small pizzeria type place and you hand to wait outside for a booth to open and grab a seat. The food has stayed consistently good over the years. Penne vodka with shrimp, chicken francaise, shrimp francaise, lasagna, eggplant rolatini, meatballs, calamari, italian hummus and pizza are all incredible. Had pretty much everything on the menu but the above are highlights. The same family has owned all the time I've been going and they are super friendly and accommodating. My family and I have spent the last 6 Christmas eve's having dinner there. It is more expensive than other places, maybe a little too expensive but its better. Don't get the negative reviews on here. Came here from NYC to meet cousins for dinner. All wait staff were very nice and sat us right away. We had a tri color salad to start with the crab and lobster salad as well. Both very fresh and tasty. We had the original chicken parm and the special chicken parm (with pink sauce and panko), both were great. Portions were large and filling. The men ordered halibut and chicken saltimbocca, they were happy too! Great place for fresh food and a nice ambiance. All of the food that was coming out to other tables looks good as well, we would be back to try other dishes! read more
