Stopped by this establishment on Saturday with my son's basketball win! Place was empty because it was still early so the boys had the place to themselves . When entering u are met with a decent size bar and tables and booths on the other side. They have a full menu of pizza, pasta and burgers. We only had pizza but let me tell u the pizza here is very tasty! Thin crust and the sauce was delicious! Staff was very nice and accommodating to our little crew of 10 year olds. Food here is below average, but has and old school dive bar feeling with a good local following. On Sundays they have cheap beers during the football games. I do not like how you have to have separate tabs for the bar and food. The bartender has to go get a waitress to take your food order, which slows service. read more

Quite honestly I don't know why I've not been to Chrones before now. The food is great, the prices are reasonable and the service is friendly and timely. Hands down this is the best pizza that i have found in this entire area. and any of the surrounding areas. My favorites are meatball and sausage, and white pie with veggies. Everything is freshly made to order There is no delivery service, but you can call and they have a pickup window. The calamari is light and tender,the marinara sauce that is served on top is chunky, with a hit of garlic and delicious. I have tried just about everything on their menu. One of my favorites is the chicken francaise in a lemon butter sauce. It very tasty. I also like that they combine dishes like eggplant and chicken parm, or shrimp and chicken etc. They also have antipasto ,and different salads. The waitresses are very friendly. The service is very good and very attentive. The Chrones bar that is part of the restaurant has been there for over 40 yr or more. It comes with it's own characters just like Cheers! U can always get a good drink or a nice glass of wine. There is limited parking, but u can park on the street or if late at night park across the street. The restaurant takes cash only! I'm local to this place and have driven past about a hundred times but never noticed it before. The only reason I tried them out was because my mom gave me a $25 gift certificate that she won from a Tricky Tray ... so yeah. Anyway I took my daughter with me on a Saturday afternoon about 1pm. When we walked in (we could hardly tell where the entrance was btw) there were 3 old guys at the bar and 1 other couple (father/son) in the dining area. As everyone else stated this is cash only which is on the front cover of their menu. We ordered a Tortellini with tomato sauce and I had a sausage/pepper Calzone. They brought out bread and and a side salad which were pretty good so I was psyched for the food. But then the food came and We were uber disappointed. The Calzone had still unmelted cheese in the center and raw onions and way too much cheese and not enough sausage pepper and Onions. The tortellini tasted like it was frozen and the sauce tasted like it was from a can. No flavor and not well cooked food. The waiter/owner guy was nice but when he brought the bill there was a miscellaneous $2.00 charge labeled Misc T1 which I didn't even bother to ask what it was. The bill came to alittle over the $25 gift certificate so I just left the cash and called it a day. I'm glad I didn't spend my own money and I will not be back. read more

Stuck to the basics... Plain Cheese Pie; food dough, good cheese to sauce ratio. Sauce was awfully SWEET. I asked for fresh Basil and fresh garlic on the pizza, but they didn't put it on the pizza or on the side. I ordered a side of Italian Sausage with extra sauce and grated Parmesan cheese. The sauce was definitely different than the pizza sauce. It was delicious and helped soften the stale Italian bread that it came with. The onion rings... HUGE portion!!! Half of the onion rings were the typical frozen rings that don't actually have a slice of onion in it. The other half of the onion rings were hand battered and delicious. If I ordered from here again, I'd ask for the sauce from the sausage be used for the pizza. read more

I went to this local standby for the first time last week . I ordered the shrimp marinara and my friend had the vodka pasta . Out of those two dishes the marinara with shrimp was the best . I tried my friends vodka sauce it was kind of watery and lacked major flavor components . She did not like it and got a new dish . We also tried garlic bread , which was good . The decor is old and boring , it needs a major upgrade . The server was a little odd but she was probably burnt out . Not sure if I will be coming back here .. read more

Simply put, the best pizza in the area. Easily worth the drive from any of the surrounding towns into Mountainside. Chrone's has fanatastic thin-crust pizza. No gimmicks. And I would bet the prices are better than the local Italian place. Skip Domino's, the local Italian joint, and try Chrone's. Try the chicken wings too, they are fried with the skin on - very tasty and they give you plenty of sauce to dip with. By the way, our favorite is the black olive and sausage pie. Not sure really what the atmosphere is here at night, but we were in right at noon on a Saturday and there were only a few people sitting at the bar and no one in the restaurant area. Visited in Jan. 2014 and my sense is that the kitchen is run as some type of concession separate from the bar. I felt bad for the poor servers, because the restaurant host/maitre 'd/manager was rude, officious, cold and disagreeable toward diners, both about seating arrangements and hurrying people out of the restaurant when he decided their meal was over. One middle-aged couple near us was asked to leave for no good reason other than that he wanted to turn the table -- they were polite and told him they were staying another few minutes. Great neighborhood sports pub. Best pizza in the area, except they don't have chunky sausage (I hate sliced - Chicago thing). It's most impressive that Chrone's offers one of the best CA IPA's around, Sierra Nevada Torpedo, which is currently on tap. Bartenders Larry and Chris are great. The Italian food is reliably delicious (special shout-out for the red sauce), and the pizza crust is thin and crispy. I'd give it zero stars if I could...Second trip to Chrones within a couple of weeks and it will be the last. First time was a later Saturday afternoon pizza lunch with my sister. Had a drink each, salad and a pizza. Only after the bill was presented were we told "cash only" for the bar tab but credit was ok for the food because it was "2 separate businesses". Weird but ok. Pizza was average. Nothing special but it is local. Went back today for an early Saturday afternoon dinner. Party of 4. Three college educated professionals (over the age of fifty) and a seventeen year old. The place was empty when we walked in at 4pm. Only three people sitting at bar. No one in dining room. We started walking towards the big table in the window to have a little more elbow room but were told we couldn't sit at the table because it had to be saved for a party of 6 or 8. Um ok. We settled into a 4 top and ordered 2 drinks, one pizza, 4 salads, one Stromboli and one Italian hot dog. Total tab: $72.03. Including the bar tab. Waitress saw my credit card and said "cash only". I said I knew the bar was cash only but asked her to put the food on the card as we had done 2 weeks earlier. "No." She said. "Cash only. Credit cards for take out only. We have an ATM but it is out of service". Since I didn't have $80 in my wallet, my husband left to go to the bank for an ATM. After he left the female owner(?) came over and said "if it's a problem we can put it on a card". Seriously? WTF? "A little late" I said. "My husband has gone to find a bank so we will just be sitting here until he comes back". I suggested that a sign would have been helpful. She said they had one but it admitted it was small. Be warned: this place is clearly pushing cash to underreport sales and avoid paying proper taxes. If you want to assist them in defrauding the tax authorities have at it. Otherwise avoid Chrones. There are better, friendlier places with better food and better atmosphere. Oh and when we left at 6pm there was only one other couple in the dining room. So much for keeping that big table open for that elusive party of 6.......when they show up I hope they bring lots of cash.... read more

This is a dive bar that incidentally has a decent pizza place attached to it. The pizza is tasty and hot, the waitresses are incredibly friendly, and the pasta sauce is delicious. They were super attentive and very nice about our noisy and rambunctious toddler. This is the best pizza that I know of, and i also look forward to having their pasta. The atmosphere is diner esque, there is a large bar area which is separated from the dining area, the service is very friendly and helpful. I grew up in Westfield and Chrone's was pretty much a bar where you wouldn't take your kids. Now it is a great family place - not fancy but with excellent food. Living in California, I miss down home Italian food and NJ pizza. Chrone's hit the spot! The pizza was tasty and the crust was good but there were minor things: the slices were different sizes (two really big slices and two really small slices) and the middle crust was very soft/soggy and outer was crisp. The salad was ok but had too much dressing. I guess you could say that the food was good but carelessly prepared. It is kind of a dive bar which I like. Chrones' Pizza has been my favorite for more than 14 years which is when I moved to the area. Fortunately I discovered this local establishment almost immediately. It is by far, hands down the best pizza I have ever had. The thin crust pizza combined with the most excellent sauce come together to create the most delicious tasting pizza around. But it doesn't stop with the pizza. The dinners cannot be beat either. I especially like the Eggplant Parm and the Veal Saltimbocca. Both are prepared to perfection. Every dish I have tried has more than met my expectations. I consider myself very lucky to live so close to this Italian food mecca. As far as the atmosphere goes, well, we don't eat there for the atmosphere. The restaurant's seating is situated alongside an old fashioned bar with tv sets playing sports events.
