I have been coming to Sun Tavern since 2008 when I worked in Cranford NJ. The prices have always been fair even with inflation. The servers, table seating are hit or miss like everywhere else. But the bar service has always been top notch. Over the years Nick has been my bartender/server. He is prompt and very knowledgeable, and personable. Tonight we chatted and I found out he worked at the Fanwood location. I recall being in my early 20s when it closed down. Really enjoy the ambience of the Sun Tavern. My best friend (living in New Brunswick) and myself (few towns over) often kick our selves forgetting about our favorite hidden gem at the Tavern, when we end up elsewhere displeased or broke (lol) . The Outdoor patio seating is our fave during warm weather but even on weekday nights the bar is always a comfortable option for us or when I go alone. I'm 35 and an old soul but I personally appreciate the music style but u can also pay to play your own songs too. The bar pies are a great size and absolutely delicious. I'm a picky eater but the cheese steak, curly fries and Taylor ham sandwich are my favorites. Great selection of Tab and drinks as well! Well worth the drive for even a quick drink! read more

One of the worse places I have ever been to. We have given it 3 times to I prove on the service and rack time we have been disappointed. From being left standing at the 'host' area with no one bothering to seat us, to being stood at the bar being ignored when our glasses were empty, to a mouse running around the dinning area. Beautiful evening, drive 1/2 hr to get there, looking forward to eating on the patio. Not busy, ordered broccoli bites, waited for pizza. Family walks in 15 min later and gets their food before us. We ask about our pizza, get told "pizzas are backed up" despite the other family getting theirs. Another family comes in 1/2hr after us gets served their pizza too. This place seems to always be packed and im glad I came early. You can tell that this place has its regular customers and they have a full bar which is great. Ill say that at first I didn't care for the kids that work here just walking around aimlessly but I can see that they are hard at work making sure everything is clean and drunks are full and what not. Ok now the food. When my calamari came out I thought to myself oh no. So thick you'd think they were tough and rubbery but im happy to say they were melt in your mouth tender. I could not believe it. My wife mentioned that her french onion soup was a bit tangy but ok. The old world pie.....very garlicy without being overwhelming and just enough dabs of sauce. Imagine a garlicy margherita pizza. This spot is nostalgic for me... over 20 years ago my now wife and I had many dates here before marriage. But many renovations and updates have modernized this restaurant but the food remains as delicious as ever!! Great service and a vineyard atmosphere make this spot a great date night dinner spot. With generous portions and tasty flavors, this menu will never disappoint. The Sun Tavern was a favorite place when I lived in NJ. On a visit, we went so my husband could get an old favorite, the steak special. It was as good as it was decades ago! We sat at the bar on a Friday night and the place was hopping! There was ample seating. Jay was behind the bar and was very funny and helpful. I had the Napoli chicken sandwich. The eggplant did not seem to be a fresh eggplant?, but the chicken was perfectly cooked and the mozzarella very fresh. I took it off the roll, the peppers made the bread soggy. Overall, good flavor and it was fun to visit an old favorite. I hope this gem will remain for years to come. read more

I must be a glutton for punishment. I keep giving this place a chance and I get nothing but disappointment. I just picked up a pizza pie from here. They said it would be ready in 15 minutes. I got there in 10 minutes. Got the pie home, opened the box and saw a pizza that was not fresh. The cheese and tomato sauce had completely dried out as evidenced by its hard surface. The edges of the crust was stale and hard as wood (it tasted like wood, too). The bottom of the crust was burnt in section as indicated by its blackened appearance. My wife and I tried to eat it but gave up after barely 1 slice. It appeared that this was an old pie that was left out and they sold it anyway. It should have been thrown out. This happened before but I gave them the benefit of the doubt because sometimes the pies are good. But this time, it wasn't. I think, if you want a good pie, don't do pick-up or delivery from there. YOU MUST GO THERE, ORDER AND EAT IT THERE. This is the only assurance that the pie will be FRESH out of the oven. However, I'm done and will not be returning. read more

Went on 6/20/2025the service needs work. I arrived the hostess outside stated we can just pick a seat in the bar area and someone will come. They came after 15 minutes was getting ready to leave they gave the menu. Then a blonde waitress comes takes our order and ran away. There was a great lady with glasses and curly hair she was the only one that was attentive. The check came I put the cash and the blonde girl came a running asked if I wanted change I said yes my bill was 25.6 if I paid cash I was going to leave the change but out of 40 she gave me 5 so she took her tip but if she would have given me the correct change I would have left the 20 because the of the lady's service not her Will no longer go back if I do I will only sit at the bar were they actually take care of their clients The food was better today than last like. A great spot to go out with friends for a casual dinner, some drinks and watching a game in the bar area. Food is nothing fancy, but still good for pizza and apps. Some of my favorites are the Old World Pizza (try with vodka sauce!) and the disco fries appetizer! Service can be a bit slow and hard to track someone down, but always very nice. read more

After missing the fanwood location after how many years, I decided to take a trip to Roselle for pickup. Everyone was so friendly. Pizza was hot and was good as I recall. The pizza is thin crust which is a nice change of pace ,can eat more! The chicken Philly style for $15+ with no fries and half a container of coleslaw is ridiculous. The chief was good, two slices, there's about four pieces of pepper and it's served with American cheese. This is not $15 worth of food. There is zero menu to be had online with prices which is aggravating. Hence, posting a menu. 3.5% charge for credit cards. read more

Service was absolutely excellent, and I enjoy the ambience of this place both inside and outside. It's difficult for me to give them only three stars, but I am taking into account other places that are not particularly far from here. With that in mind, the pizza and the wings here are... ok. I would love to give it a higher rating, it's just that if people who read my reviews are to make an informed decision, whether approaching this location for food or just a spot to grab a drink, it's certainly not a terrible choice, I just think there are a lot better local options. The sun tavern is a nice local bar Resturant. Nothing spectacular about the place but it does have nice thin crust pizza pies. Little on the pricey side but the pizza was. Pretty good. And good left over as well. Especially when you hear it up in a fry pan on a low Med heat and let the bottom crisp up. Had a bacon pie and a pepperoni pie. The bacon was cooked through and gave you a nice Smokey bacon flavor. The pepperoni was ur traditional pepperoni pizza. The crust was nice and crispy. Also got the wings. They were ok I would have like them a little more crispier. And the sauce was on the sweeter side I didn't like the medium sauce. Very disappointed in the service we received tonight. We've been coming here ALL summer with our 15lb dog to eat on the patio with NO issues. We have always been seated, the dog has never been an issue until tonight. Now I'm being told they've never allowed dogs on the patio. How come it was never an issue before ? The hostess was insinuating I was lying. We've been coming here for years and will never be back. I understand about dogs not being allowed HOWEVER why am I being told it's always been a rule when we've been being seated all summer? Why am I being made to look like a liar? Great spot for some cold beers and pizza! We ordered wings (which are not breaded, btw) and a pizza, along with some drinks, and everything tasted great! Nice thin crust on the pizza. My only downside to this place is the cost of beers, some up to around $9 for a pint. By the time my wife and I had 3 drinks and our meal, our bill was about $90! Also, per Yelp they have a Happy hour, but when we went in 12/30/21 they no longer had a happy hour menu. Staff was friendly as well. Will definitely be back! read more

Stopped in for an early dinner on the patio, the sun was out and most of the tables were full with people enjoying food and drink. The host seated us right away and was our waiter. I didn't see a beer list, but I asked for an IPA and he checked what was on tap. Ordered 2 pizzas, the thin crust with vodka sauce and hot peppers was outstanding. The pizza was crunchy and flavorful, I would definitely order this again, maybe with s different toppings from the list. I also tried the artichoke and chicken pizza, and it was just average. The chicken was a little bland, and because it was so heavy on toppings and cheese, the crust was soft. Although it was large so it you are really hungry this might be a good choice. We entered the outside area from a large parking lot. The outdoor dining was set nicely behind brick walls. We chose to sit at the outside bar. With about 10 beers on tap, I ordered Sam Summer. Wifey had vodka and club. We ordered garlic shrimp app and a chicken parm pizza. The shrimp was served in oil with roasted garlic floaters and garlic toast. Pretty good. The chicken parm pizza was delicious! Thin crust and copious cheese (which was charred to deliciousness)! The service was very good. A band was playing some soft rock. My family is always loved going to this place I was still a little sore over them booking my uncle's repass and then canceling it on me but we decided to go back to have dinner. Online it states they have a full menu they do not it's just deep fried frozen food and I have been sick for 2 days. Also the servers do not seem to have uniforms several girls were wearing shorts as short as underwear with t-shirts covering them. I gave it one star so I could post the review but I would have given no stars if possible also the prices are insane almost $100 for some deep fried frozen garbage. read more

It appeared that this pie was left out for an extended time and should have been thrown out. The establishment sold it anyway possibly figuring that a pickup or delivery was ideal way to get rid of it because the customer would not be bothered with the trouble of returning it. This is not a good business practice. I try to patronage local businesses, and, I tried to give these guys the benefit of the doubt. But, I must say,,,,,,,,,,,I'M DONE. This had been a regular go-to place for me back in the day, but since relocating, haven't been able to come back. Till just last week when I was back in the area. The Sun Tavern has always been known for its convivial atmosphere and its great eclectic pizzas. They had a very nice outdoor area set up, which is where I was seated. It took quite some time for my server to come around and take my drink order, and the beer list was not as extensive as I remembered. My server was very nice, but I didn't see her all that much as the outdoor area seemed to be a bit understaffed, in contrast to the indoor bar area. I ordered the shrimp scampi pizza, which was an old favorite, and it was every bit as terrific as I remembered. It may sound like a weird combo, but it works. I left there very contented and will look forward to coming back whenever circumstances may permit. read more

I haven't eaten here in over 12 years. Their pizza was amazing...thin with a super crispy crust. I was in the area so decided to bring my son so he could experience the delicious pizza. I wish I would have tucked those memories away and just lived off of them. The decor hasn't changed in the last 12 years and even back then it felt like you were in someone's grandparents basement. You don't come here for ambiance, you come here for the pizza. We started with mozzarella sticks. Clearly frozen from a box or bag. They weren't fully cooked, room temperature at best. The pepperoni's on the pizza are still crispy little cups like I remembered them. The crust was not crispy at all. I would have rather a well-done pizza. That may have helped the taste. The honey mustard chicken wrap had a dollop of honey mustard on it. Overall, a very disappointing experience. The highlight was our server. He was very attentive and nice. Went on a Friday night parking lot was full 7:30pm, only waited about 10 minutes for a table which was enough time to grab a drink at the bar which has a lot of seating! Staff friendly and attentive, ordered pizza, waitress informed us of lengthy wait for food as a lot of pizza orders were going in, we didn't mind!
