Short story - they showed up late the day of the move, brought a borrowed crew, left after 4 hours and then showed up late the next day. The broke our treadmill with their own technician saying the same but refused to have it fixed. Better yet the insurance company wants nothing to do with it. But you need to budget it in maybe ~10% more than the all in binding quote. They have several levers to pull to tack on extra fees after they lock in your business. For us it was an extra $1,100 above our all in binding quote across two different tactics. Unfortunately, they had the leverage and used it against us. Despite flagging our issues two weeks prior, they stalled until the night before delivery and then threatened that they would not perform delivery if we did not agree to their terms immediately (we got an updated contract with extra fees at 8pm the night before delivery). As background, we got quotes from two companies when we moved from CA to IL. We made it abundantly clear up front - given timing urgency and a pregnancy, we wanted full packing, delivery, and unpacking. We also asked that they include any and all permits and third-party fees (such as taking TV mounts off the wall). It was very black and white, our quotes would include all these services. A competitor (United) came back with the best all in quote. It agreed to all of the above in writing. I really wish we had gone with them. But the Pickens-Kane team offered to match United's written quote after an extensive 90 minute walk through. They agreed verbally to packing, delivery, unpacking and baked in over $800 of third-party fees. We went with them as they performed a move for us in the past with only minor friction. Unfortunately, they errantly left the "unpacking" line item off the final multi-page quote they sent us. The team there admitted to us that this was an oversight. They agreed that we had asked for unpacking. They agreed that they meant to include unpacking, as this was a non-negotiable ask from us. They agreed that unpacking was part of the competitor quote that they were matching. Yet they contend that the fine print of the contract omitted unpacking. The contract did have a section marked "unpacking", so we assumed it was included. There would be no reason to think otherwise. They argued that items in that section were left blank, and thus we should have known that it was not included. This seems crazy. We discussed thoroughly that unpacking was included. The competing quote says explicitly that unpacking was included. We agreed verbally that unpacking was included. There is a section that says unpacking in the contract we signed. I don't know if this is dishonesty or negligence. I really believe negligence. But the fact that they were not willing to make it right is hard to fathom. We had several intense back and forths during an already stressful move and pregnancy. I offered to meet them halfway - which still seemed quite unfair. But even this they denied. Eventually they settled on a 25% discount on the unpacking fee. It's hard for us to understand this given the entire unpacking fee was verbally agreed to as part of our total payment. But now we're paying an extra $919 for this service. Unfortunately, there's more. As part of the walkthrough, we highlighted a pull-out couch that we own. It is a rather small couch, but it disassembles as it's a bit heavy. That said, two people can easily pick it up - we quite easily moved it around today after it was fully assembled. The competing United team thought that they could likely move it without disassembly, but noted that they would cover disassembly from a third-party if ultimately needed as part of the all in binding quote. We were very explicit in our 90 minute walk through with the Pickens-Kane team about this couch. There was no surprise to them that it was a heavy couch and it came apart if needed. The person doing the walk through noted this and opted out of baking in additional in third-party costs. On the day of the move, we were informed that we would need to pay an extra $428 if we wanted to take this couch ($214 to disassemble and $214 to reassemble). This caught us very off guard. It was part of the all in binding quote. We were very explicit about the nature of this couch and were assured that it was part of the all in binding quote). Yet on move day, they used their leverage. We had to agree to the steep additional fee or leave the couch (which was not an option given replacement value was quite high). We asked, "what could we have done differently given you agree we provided you with all the information and you gave us an all in binding quote?" They said there was nothing we could have done differently. This should've been part of the all in quote, but they are simply not honoring it. Eventually they reduced the charge by half to $214. In full, $1,100 taken from us. This is not a serious team. I believe some of our direct contacts had good intentions, but management clearly put them in an impossible position. Go elsewhere or be prepared to pay significantly more than you are quoted.

When the trailer arrived at my destination it seemed like a bomb went off in the trailer and it was flipped over multiple times. Desks had screws completely screwed off and the legs flipped around, outdoor patio table is cracked, plastic boxes are cracked and glass items that we triple bubble wrapped were broken as if someone took a hammer to them. No explanation for any of the damage, and the best Upack can do is offer me "10 cents per pound"... that is a slap in the face and we are disputing the entire charge with our credit card. Even if the full delivery fee is refunded it won't cover the cost of the damage to my belongings. Highly recommend you spend the extra money for a more reputable company.

The movers took close to half an hour to bring my partner's piano upstairs and did not remove the casters from the bottom, causing them to break. Several other items were dropped and damaged or broken. To top it off, one of the employees started to become violent and fight with his coworkers while trying to move our belongings to our new house. When I called in to see if the company would pay for items they damaged, the woman who answered became angry and accused me of lying to get a refund. We thought using a moving company instead of renting a truck and hiring day laborers would make the move less stressful, but we were wrong.

He really wanted to personally ensure that clients got their belongings moved safely for a fair price. When it came time, in August, to move everything out of my large bungalow, into a small two bedroom apartment, of course I chose Reliable Movers. Many of the well known moving companies had horror stories in the "1 star" reviews....didn't want to risk it! His foreman, Isaac, warned me how much stuff I had, and unfortunately DOUBLED Aaron's estimate; since I had a MASSIVE amount of files, books, unattended mending, in addition to furniture, pots & pans... basically enough for a family of 6!!!! Isaac's crew of 4 spent all Sunday wrapping everything in paper, and putting it in boxes safely. Delivered furniture and "stuff" to my small two bedroom apartment. and rented storage facility on Monday. Fun Fact!!! Don't use bubble wrap for things that you will store for a long time: unless your storage facility is totally climate controlled, you can get condensation inside the bubble wrap and it can get mold!!! The men maintained a great attitude, and were very respectful to this currently single woman. There were no unexpected up-charges, no holding my belongings hostage if didn't pay "said up-charges", like the horror stories I have heard about other movers. Everyone was very kind, even though I was quite over-whelmed and had trouble making decisions. It hurt my wallet to pay the adjusted amount, but the price was FAIR, given the amount of work the crew did. They literally worked from 8 am until 7 on Sunday, with only a break for water. You are both in your mid 40s and neither of you are in any shape to move her whole apartment down three flights of stairs and back up three more. So you get off your overnight shift and start looking for movers. Two of the places you contact are booked, not surprising as it's the last days of July in Chicago. You happen across Reliable Movers and take the chance, sending them a project request. Lo and behold they have an opening the NEXT DAY due to a cancellation. They send you the hourly rate which is more than reasonable and immediately call them. Not only is the owner super nice on the phone but hilarious. In less than ten minutes we had an official quote, signed contract and deposit paid. The next morning you get a call before your start time of 9am stating the movers hit no traffic and are ready to start early. You head downstairs to move the cars which you blocked space for the truck because Rogers Park parking. The movers come upstairs and start wrapping up furniture and you head to the second location. When the truck pulls up again, you move your car again for the ease of the truck. The offload took less than an hour! All payments were taken quickly through Zelle. All stories aside, the movers and owner are amazing. They accommodated a late scheduled move and came in right at the quote price (minus the addtional charge for some boxes which I approved). If we ever move again, they are going to be my first call! Nice and early scheduled next time. :)
