I feel about Cornercopia much like I do about my favorite pair of sneakers. You know what I mean? You're definitely glad to have them around, you appreciate the familiarity you share, and you certainly wouldn't want to lose them. You know at the same time though -- they could probably use a little improvement. In this case, I don't love that Cornercopia has never posted their operating hours. I still can't tell friends exactly when they're open. Also, I'm not personally a fan of either pesto or Russian dressing, but these deli owners love both. (I mean they LOVE them, like on almost every single sandwich.) Now, since their sandwiches are made to order, it's not a big deal to request exceptions, but I'd sure love to see a little ground mustard, Italian dressing, chipotle mayo, or something of variety on the menu. On the other hand, like with your favorite pair of sneakers, there are aspects of a relationship that become so familiar and comfortable that you can't imagine them changing. In this instance, I love that the owners choose high quality products, that they stock the shelves with unique items you don't find everywhere else. I also appreciate that they opt to run the deli themselves, overseeing most of the daily details. Sandwiches are made to order, shelves are neatly stocked and questions are answered by the same people placing the store's orders. So, while Cornercopia may not be perfect, I'm glad that like that comfortable pair of sneakers I referenced, they perform reliably when I need them. read more

Just recently a sandwich was brought to me by a friend who had stopped by this place called Cornercopia in SE DC near the Navy Yard. Being somewhat of a sandwich snob, I wasn't sure if I would like it or not but decided to give it a try. My friend decided that I would enjoy Mom's Chicken Salad, and since my friend knows how I feel about sauce and cheese, she decided to ask for the extra for me, this is why we are friends! lol. Anyhow, wow.... it was amazing. I don't usually compliment your ordinary sandwiches but it was really good. First off, the bread is definitely fresh, and the mixture of the chicken salad was a perfect balance of salty and sweet in your mouth. Also, the sandwich is really big so I ended up eating only half and saving the other half for later. Later on I found out that the reason I enjoyed their sandwich so much is because this is a small mom and pop kind of place in DC who are true connoisseurs of sandwiches. They actually hand make everything that they make like the sauces, they get fresh daily baked breads delivered daily, and every sandwich includes a little bit of the love they put into it. Thank GOD for Cornercopia. Seriously, when you live in this neighborhood, and all you want is a good bottle of wine? You can either go to the totally ghetto liquor store on S. Capitol or trek your ass to 8th St where you will never find a parking space and get annoyed at the whole endeavor, which of course makes you want that bottle of wine all the more. Enter Cornercopia. Great food, small but decent wine selection, a baked goods section, a sandwich deli, and really cool people behind the counter. A tiny neighborhood market with a very smart name. They have 6 or 7 subs on their menu. The one I had with turkey, pesto, and cranberries (The Georgetown) was great. They have daily lunch specials - one is bulgogi and kimchi on Thursdays. They also carry the most amazing ice cream from Trickling Springs Creamery in PA. Cornercopia is absolutely delightful. This place functions as both a deli and corner store with odd, often all natural or organic, and sometime Asian pre-packaged foods. Definitely get the sandwiches. The breakfast sandwich with pesto eggs has saved me on more than one morning following a late night. The other sandwiches are all delicious as well. Be ready to dedicate some time to getting your sandwiches as these are all made to order and if you happen to come in after a few other patrons, you may be there for a while. It's worth it, promise! This is the one place down at the Navy Yard that I really love, and primarily for one sandwich. It's an unassuming little corner store that you may never hear of unless you talk to someone who lives nearby. They're about two blocks away from the main drag on M street where the food trucks gather at lunch. Every time I go, I get the same sandwich, the 'Green Line.' While I'm normally a big fan of heavy and meaty sandwiches when I go to a deli, this vegetarian sandwich will make even the biggest meat-eater pretty happy. Avocados Tomatoes (and I would honestly love to know where they get good tomatoes in January) Gouda Cheese Lettuce Red Onions (just the right amount) Dried Cranberries Get it on Rye bread, you can thank me later. If you want sides, they've got some tasty options for potato chips and what have you (though they are pricey). Beverage selection is great. So why four stars instead of five for one of my favorite sandwiches in DC? Value: My vegetarian sandwich, chips, and iced tea cost $12. That's a bit much. Seating: Non-existent. Great place though, and one of your best options when you're down near the Navy Yard (hopefully for something less depressing than a Nats game). read more

I heart this little gem by the Nationals Stadium. Their sandwiches are so yummy and creative. They are FULL of super thin/deli meat and other fresh ingredients. They do NOT skimp you on the meat...it is a BIG sandwich. The store also carries distinct snacks and treats you can't find in the area. I love trying out new snacks and ice cream here. I also love the bulgogi special with kimchee. The bulgogi is better than the ones I've had in Korean restaurants. It is sweet and savory and totally hits the spot every time. This place was amazing. The menu has a variety of sandwiches to choose from. I had the capital sand which on a sub roll due to them running out of other types of bread. I expected the tool to be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside however the entire tool was soft. Seemed like it had been bagged and not as fresh as I thought. I've had the veggie dumplings (Tuesday special) twice now, and I LOVE them! They have so much flavor and they come with spicy dipping sauce or soy sauce (your pick). They give you a very filling portion for around $8.50 (I think it's about 10 dumplings). Unfortunately, their menu said that dumplings will be unavailable from 7/20 to 8/20. Sad I won't be able to get them again til the end of the summer, but something to look forward to! read more

Cornercopia seemed a bit pricey at first. But then after I ate one of their sandwiches I could tell that their ingredients were fresh and the portions were good. They have ready made sandwiches and salads which are easy to pick up if you are in a hurry and add a little variety with their "daily" specials which only occur on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The grocery part is a nice touch. It is more on the gourmet side. The items that you can get are pretty good if you want to grab a thing or two and toss in the microwave at work for a break from the sandwich rut. You could also buy a couple of instant noodles packs and save them for later. I picked up some precooked rice and a packet of Indian food for the microwave, and it gave me a good lunch for about 5 bucks. Great place for lunch in Navy Yard. Will miss it a lot when we move offices. The sandwiches are all between $7-9 and it's got a decent selection of beverages, mainstream and off-brand alike. Good selection of Asian (read: Japanese) snacks; it seems a few of the employees are Japanese and stock the store with some tasty import goodies - Pocky, Hi-Chew, etc. I've had at least four or five of the sandwiches and have never been disappointed. For the area, it can't be beat at lunch - I've worked in the area for awhile and it's by far the best and most consistent place within walking distance of Navy Yard metro. Don't let looks deceive you! This is a small hole in the wall with no seating. It is the sort of place where you pick up sandwiches to go. The guy behind the register was on the ready to take my order as soon as I walked in. Even though there were a couple of people ahead of me, the two sandwich makers had the sandwich built and bagged in flash. I got the Capitol Sandwich which wet my appetite to try everything on the menu in future visits. I really WANT to like cornercopia but it really frustrates me in a lot of ways. It's just so DARN EXPENSIVE. I went in there the other day.. got total of 5 things... Total price $50. I'm not kidding. Yes, I got an $11 bottle of wine (which was pretty good, tasty wine). Still--the rest of my purchases were pretty small. A container of cheese, a package of pasta, some crackers. Also it irks me that the receipts are not itemized. So I don't know how much each item was. (just the total $50). I made a little promise to myself that I'm going to avoid this place for groceries. I just can't afford it. Heck, Wholefoods is cheaper. The one BIG plus: delicious sandwiches. Sometimes they'll drop off a $1 if you get the sandwich with no meat. Other times they've charged me the full price. Not sure why. Veggies: try the stadium-with no meat, and swiss. Tasty stuff. Another Plus: pretty decent wine selection and reasonable wine prices. The sandwich selection is modest but definitely gourmet compared to your run of the mill deli's. 5-stars on quality, but I'm a sandwich snob and these sandwiches could be better. They are really good, just not 5-star worthy. The little shop has very limited quantities of food, but the food they have is unique and very high-quality. It is probably the best quality in the area, including the new Harris Teeter and the upcoming whole foods. There are definitely some hipster snacks in here and drinks that you won't be able to find at the Harris Teeter down the street. The dude that runs the store seems nice and keeps the store real clean. I got the Stadium on sourdough based on all the Yelp reviews and enjoyed my sandwich. It wasn't amazing by any means, but they did give a decent amount of meat and fix ins as well as a pickle. But for $9 I would probably expect a bit of a bigger/better sandwich and not to have it microwaved. I haven't come by for the specials they have on Tuesday (chicken curry) and Thursday (bulgogi). Very small corner market - you're either taking this back to the office or heading to a bench nearby. I always get the same thing - The Stadium, no tomato. A lot of sandwich with fresh ingredients - though it seems lately they've been going lighter on the avocado. Actually thought they forgot to put it on last time, but was just minimal compared to the amount of turkey. They also give you a free pickle on the side. Place is almost always packed, and parking options really suck. We usually call ahead, especially with a group order. Usually I bring someone to run in, or park near the curb with the flashers on. Nice gourmet food items and specialty drinks that are attractive for impulse buys. Not the cheapest spot, but worth the money for good quality sandwiches and extras. I got the Stadium, which seems to be the popular one-turkey, bacon, avocado, lettuce, and tomato. They really pack in your sandwich, so you really are getting your money's worth. It is not a sit down place to eat lunch and the bulgogi always keeps me coming back on Thursday's (Bulgogi Thursday), but the other dishes that I have ordered have always been top quality. So this place is pretty cool if you live anywhere near Capitol Hill or even better south of Capitol Hill. It's a little corner store that is a little different than the stereotypical "corner store". Instead of aisle lined with shelves of candy bars and chips, cornercopia is more of a miniature market. Inside you can buy things such as crackers, cheese, nutella, European chocolates, drinks, etc. but they also have premade sandwiches and lunches along with fresh fruit. Not only that but they have a menu of sandhwiches and other things that they will make on the spot for you. My boyfriend ordered a turkey sandwich which was intended for him but I ended up devouring it. The sandwiches are really fresh and they even put avocado in it for you. The best thing is that the owners are Korean and on Wednesdays they have bulgogi (Korean BBQ) and Kimchi :] The only thing about Cornercopia is that they have odd business hours. The bf and I walked here last Saturday before the US/GHANA game and they were closed and seemed to be closed the whole day. I really like the location of this place I am sure once they are done building up around the area it will start to bring in a lot more revenue. read more

I've been going here occasionally for the last few years, but not very often because they're always closed on the weekends, which would the the perfect time for me to enjoy them. Argh. Their sandwiches are all awesome. Lots of meat, the sauces are incredible, and they are big. I'm not a sandwich person but I am in love with these. I also had the curry special and it was delicious and the rice was cooked well, although I would have like a considerable larger portion of meat. That, and the fact they're closed on Saturdays and Sundays are the only negatives. Which means I can basically never eat there except on weekday evenings since I live in the neighborhood. 5 stars. If I had reviewed this business any other time over the past 10 years of which I'm a regular customer, I would have given a much better review. In fact my husband did on our behalf a few years ago. However after today i won't be returning. I ordered the Navy yard (tuna sandwhich) which is my typical. 5 minutes later I started eating my lunch and something was off. Today I was sharing with a coworker and she immediately noticed the same thing. I called to notify cornercopia, primarily as s a courtesy. I gave my number and explained to the lady at the register. She took my number and called me back. She arguably stated that she tasted the tuna and it was fine and without my prompt, told me she would not be making me another sandwich. I was a little shocked by the attitude expressed and said, "ok, well I dont really need one but was letting you know as a courtesy but am a little bothered by your attitude, particularly given that I'm a regular / loyal customer (2 times a week for 10 years" she told me well I'm sorry you feel that way and if you dont return that's a decision you have to make. I'm still in shock and a bit mournful as I surely will not be returning out of principle. I'll make sure to let my office aware as well - no more large take out orders here. It's a shame. If DC ever lists top sandwiches places, this should be in top 3 in my opinion. The key is they are consistently good, I been there during busy hours and slow times. It never really changed. Simple ingredients, simply made original sandwich names. My favorite is the Greenline with turkey, it's the bomb. Greenline is there Vegan sandwich, I just ask them to add the turkey.
