I purposefully waited a while to try out Coppa. I knew it was going to be a shitshow to get a table and as I've probably made it clear, while I don't mind bellying up to the bar to have a few while waiting for a table, I don't have THAT much patience.
Attempt 1: A couple Sunday's ago. I figured, Sunday would be a good night to try the place out right? Wrong. There was a 2.5 hour wait. Eff that. Went somewhere else.
Attempt 2: Last night. There were 4 of us. At first, they said it would be a 90 minute wait. Okey dokey. We're sticking around this time. We put our orders in for some drinks and hung out in the nonexistant waiting area near the door. 5-10 minutes later, the hostess comes back and says we've been moved up because a party of 4 just cancelled, and now our wait was just short of an hour. We still didn't have our drinks, but this perked us up as if we were already on round 2. No more than 10-15 minutes later, the hostess comes back again and says yet another party cancelled, and she was setting up our table at that moment. So our 90+ wait went down to about 20 minutes. Score!
*I feel like they use their long waits as scare tactics.
Now, about the space. I keep hearing moaning and groaning from all over about how tiny it is. Yes, it's small. It's also cozy! I'm guessing none of the complainers ever went to Coppa's predecessor. I on the other hand was a long-time patron of The Dish (*tear*, RIP The Dish) and miss it dearly.
Anyway, back to Coppa. We sit down, get our waters and pore over the menu. Now, I'm a picky eater and sooooo many things tempted me. This is what we ended up with:
Arancini - completely delicious, they rival Ivy's
Bruschetta de Cannellini - yum, packed with flavor
Parma pizza - because I don't eat meat, we had them put the prosciutto only on half. It was damn good pizza.
Those were just the apps for the 4 of us. We were incredibly impressed, and couldn't wait for our entrees to arrive.
The entrees arrived, but not all at once. That's fine if it's the type of place that blatantly advertises (like Myers & Chang) that not all meals will come out at once, however last night, our waitress came over and asked how everything was, and when we pointed out that 2 of our party still hadn't received their entrees, she was a bit spacey about 'going to find out where they were'. That's my only complaint about the place. If you don't let people know that food may come out at different times, then get all members of the party their entrees at once!
Back to our entrees. We got:
Lasagna alla bolognese
Bucatini alla Amatraciana
Cavatelli di Pollo
Pesce al mattone
I don't eat meat, but I tried everyone's pasta dishes because I just had to. I love pasta, and I just picked out the pieces of meat but obviously the flavors were still there. They were all really good, but the cavatelli di pollo won out, hands down. Best flavor of the bunch. And my cod under a brick? WOW. Deeeeeeeeeeeee-freaking-lish. The pistachios and lemon really pack a punch here.
Because the plates are smaller portions, we weren't completely stuffed so we decided to be pigs and get gelato. One chocolate and one hazelnut. Expensive at $6 each, but pretty dang tasty.
As for drinks, our party sampled some beers and some red wines. The barbera was the big winner.
Then the bill came. I totally called it. When we ordered everything, I said - this is the kind of place where you think you're getting a great meal for a decent price but then you get the bill and you're like - whoa! How did it get to be that big? - and that's kind of what happened. Yes, each plate is very reasonably priced, but the bill still came to $150+.
Next time, I'm not getting dessert, and I'll stick to just one app and one entree.
And hells yes, there WILL be a next time. Soon. The hoopla was right on the money, and it was well worth the wait. Totally worth it. Coppa, I've got my eye on you. read more
