My husband and I own a bar back home, so we know firsthand how difficult it can be when a large group walks through the door, especially with a small staff. We also know great service when we see it and always love to give credit where it's deserved! We called ahead with a large team of about 30 people and were told they could get us in. When we arrived, they were very transparent that they were working with a small crew, just two girls out front and one guy in the kitchen. With a group our size, we were a little nervous at first, but we had absolutely nothing to worry about! Zoey was our server and she was amazing. She handled our entire group with so much grace and professionalism. She kept everything organized, made sure the kids' food went in first, stayed on top of drinks and orders, and somehow managed to get all 30 of us taken care of and on our way in great time. The bartender was also incredibly nice and helpful, and together they kept everything running smoothly despite being short-staffed. The food did not disappoint either! The Reuben, burger, and Reuben burger were all fantastic, and of course the boys loved the wings and boneless wings. If you're visiting Cooperstown or heading to the Baseball Hall of Fame, definitely make Cooley's Stone House Tavern one of your stops. The fried pickles are worth the visit!! The food order almost didn't happen, as I walked in early in the evening on Valentine's Day. There is a bar as well as booth seating but no direction or indication of waiting to be seated or seating yourself. I didn't want to go unnoticed so I sat at the bar. (Most of the tables are past the entry way and bar area). There was a family group, a few couples and a group of guys playing darts off to the side. I sat there for more than five minutes before I was even acknowledged. I know this because I could see the Guinness Countdown to St Patrick's Day (down to the second) from my seat. There were 3 girls behind the bar but one seemed to be doing most of the bar work. As I put on my jacket to leave, I finally had the attention of one of the girls so I decided to take my chances and stick with my dinner plan. She got me a menu and asked for my drink order. There weren't any hard ciders on tap but they did have canned Awestruck (local). I noticed the fried pickle appetizer and asked her about it. She told me they were spears and very popular. I decided to take her recommendation and ordered them, along with a Cooley's Handmade Burger with sautéed mushrooms and swiss cheese. My pickle fries came out first since they were an app and I can tell you two things about them...the portion was huge and they were absolutely the best I've ever had! Not long afterward, my burger arrived and that was really tasty as well. Nothing says autumn like a "Frozen Mango Breeze" while watching your breath fog up indoors. The soundtrack was off-brand Doors covers featuring an enthusiastic bongo player who was clearly paid by the beat. The volume fluctuated like the tavern's Wi-Fi signal -- one minute it was a whisper, the next it was like being trapped in a drum circle during a Jim Morrison séance. Inside the "non-smoking" bar, a delightful smoky haze drifted through the air thanks to the staff's decision to use the ashtray as a doorstop. It's like they wanted to recreate the authentic 1980s bowling alley experience. The single bathroom door doesn't lock, which adds a fun new twist to your visit -- the thrill of potentially making a new friend while washing your hands. After 25 minutes of waiting for our high-stakes order (boneless wings and a salad), our server cheerfully reported that it was "gettin' there." Street parking. Plenty of TVs to catch the games. Booths up front. Tables in the back. Decorated in baseball memorabilia. Friendly barkeep and customers. If not the locals, plenty of baseball fans stopping in for a break. Very good draft & bottle beer selection. Good menu. The wings were OK. We ordered BBQ and they came plain with BBQ sauce. In my opinion wings should be finished off in the sauce you choose, then the flavor really gets into the meat. But the real deal here was the French Dip. This had delish thin slices of house made roast beef but here served on a panini pressed ciabata bread. But they did not give the usual watery au jus sauce you get everywhere else. Where does one go after a huge helping of baseball? A local pub with great food and drink: a.k.a. Cooley's. When we walked in, we were warmly greeted by the bartender. First, and most importantly, they had Guinness and Ommegang on tap. I sprung for the rainbow ale Ommegang: a nice and hoppy IPA. I had the Jamaican jerk wings and a cowboy burger with their fries. Oh...their fries....the perfect firmness and crispness to scoop up ketchup, two by two.... Yeah, the fries were a hit. Burger was a perfect medium rare, with criss-crossed bacon for better coverage and easier bites. Also hits with the family were the beer pretzel and veggie burgers, as were the Mac and cheese wedges. There was a big argument about how to apply ketchup to the fries. The whole family, except my wife, agreed that fries must be dipped or scooped. One does NOT drizzle ketchup over fries. Sacrilege. I found the wings to be really well made. They were big, not dry at all, and grilled, not fried, while still being crispy. Each piece is considered a one or two bone piece, not the entire wing. I did not expect to give these guys 5 stars. BUT- started out with a local beer on tap- Neon Rainbow IPA (a "hazy"IPA) by Ommegang. John Tapper from Bar Rescue would be proud! The tap is clearly well maintained. For an IPA it is spectacular. Followed by our order of burgers. Among one of the best burgers I have had in a bar/tavern! Everyone's burger came out perfect. Cooley's is a classic bar. I've been there a few times, most recently during Hall of Fame weekend when things are very hectic. The service was excellent. Again, it was very busy, so I did have to wait a couple times for a round, but nothing crazy. Knowing how busy it was, they served beer in plastic cups, allowing you to step outside if you liked. I was there for dinner as well. Being from Jersey, I ordered the Jersey Burger which has a piece of pork roll and a fried egg. It was messy, but delicious. I've had it before. I would like to give this place a higher rating as the food was decent, but the waitress we had yesterday just makes me wonder why people go into customer service when they are clearly loath being a waitress. The attitude displayed by our waitress was observed by even our youngest dinner, who asked "why is that lady mad at us?" It wasn't that she was outright rude that you could call her on it, but the eye rolls, smirks and condescending attitude said it all. Oh, and the answer "it changes every day, so I never know what they have" when asked about flavors...really? Isn't it your J-O-B to know what your restaurant has available?
