I had seen this place plenty of times and used to think it was for custom or catering orders only, but I figured today was the day to find out for sure. Sure enough, they do sell individual cupcakes and cookies. I purchased a birthday cake cupcake and a chocolate coconut cupcake. Both were larger than some competitors' cupcakes and only cost $3.25 each, undercutting other gourmet cupcake shops. Not only were these treats generously sized, but they were generously frosted as well. How did they taste? The chocolate coconut was excellent; the chocolate center filling was a nice touch. The birthday cake one was decent; no center filling, but the cake had confetti. However, both were on the sugary side, which I know sounds like a silly criticism when talking about cupcakes. But we could only eat a portion of each cake before our stomachs asked us to stop. I felt a little sick after eating more than I should have. In my opinion, the cake and frosting quality at Molly's is a notch above, but if you need a sugar fix, Cupcake by Design will give you a bigger, frostier treat for less money. read more

Ummm is no stars an option? My son who is away a college ordered me a fruit arrangement for my birthday. I'm positive that he didn't request an arrangement with dry, discolored fruit and brown liquidity lettuce as the base. The fruit was arranged so poorly that the container falls to one side and isn't able to support itself on the base. Now on to the piss poor delivery. I received an alert on my RING doorbell and promptly responded to a young lady lecturing me about not answering my phone earlier in the day. I explained to the delivery driver that I had not received any calls or messages and she again snapped, that she's been calling me all morning. She then informed me, "well since you're not home, I'm just gonna leave it on your porch." I requested that she not leave the delivery on my porch for fear of theft and the fact that it's fruit and unable to stand alone. She then stated, " I don't have time to wait for you." To make a really long story short, the service and product received were both nasty. The fruit is not edible and I'm more upset that my college student spent his meager funds on something for his Mom's birthday that turned out to be trash. Side note: the delivery driver was driving a blue suv and according to the card, the delivery zone belongs to Sharnese. In the scant hours after learning my father suffered a stroke, I was scrambling. Where is he? How is he? What's his condition? When can I visit? And what can I do to cheer him up? It's notoriously difficult to buy presents for men, and my father is the epitome of that rule. Flowers are out, cards aren't enough and balloons are more for children. What does that leave? Cookies! I placed my order online (but also received excellent customer service over the phone) and picked it up in-store. If you're unfamiliar with the area, it's certainly tucked away in an underwhelming complex anchored by the Super-H Mart and Ogden 6 Theatre. But don't dare be put off by its exterior: the bountiful and beautiful bouquets in the display window should be enough to lure you in. And the taste will keep you there for life. I'll start to say the bouquet I ordered was delightful. It included an adorably decorated gingerbread doctor bear and a flower-shaped shortbread cookie with "Cookies are the Best Medicine" written on it in frosting. I also ordered the basket with a dozen random cookies as well as balloons. I'll mention here that the shortbread cookie was great -- not too rich, not too heavy -- and the oatmeal raisin were to die for (chewy, gooey, and oo-ey (as in "OOOOOH is this ever good!") But when I saw an adorable stuffed animal in the shop, the lovely staff took the time to tie it to the basket with a ribbon and re-wrap the bouquet with cellophane. Walking through the hospital (of course I parked at the exact opposite from where my dad was), everyone looked at the bouquet and smiled. It cheered up the days of other patients, visitors and the staff (especially the nurse's aid with whom he shared some of his cookies). And the most important thing? It brought a smile to my father's face. Thanks to the staff for helping us through this difficult time. We both are looking forward to visiting again soon, as we've found our new favorite cookie place (and not just for special occasions). read more

I ordered cookies for my husband's 40th birthday from here. They look amazing and I've never had problems getting cookies from here before. They just moved to a new location and the store looks pretty great, much more space than the last one. However, we get there and no one is out front. Fine, ok. My daughter's and I looked around in the cookie cases at all the pretty cookies and other goodies they have for a while. There was a woman in an office with the door open who came out a couple of times while were there, never told anyone there were customers in front. A baker from the back came up and saw us but never told anyone we were there. After about 10 minutes, maybe longer, I had to stick my head in the back of the store and ask if anyone was working up front. Someone came up immediately. My cookies were sitting right there, I knew they were mine, I just needed someone to hand them to me as they were already paid for. If they have trouble knowing if they have customers in the shop might I suggest they get a bell for the door or something similar. While the cookies are likely delicious the service is lacking. read more

I sent an order to family who lost a loved one and the bouquet was perfect. I had provided an inaccurate address and the delivery driver made multiple attempts to reach me and when they finally did went out of there way to get it to the right location. They spent extra time and were patient and made sure the bouquet got there - it was much appreciated! I thought the incoming calls were spam, so when I finally called back to say why do you keep calling me, it was the delivery driver asking for help. In visiting the Ogden Six second-run movie theatre in Naperville I'd often see a place called "Cookies by Design". Generally going to see movies later in the evening, for many years I'd walk over to Cookies by Design, and every single time it was closed. Finally, after all this time I had a chance to visit Cookies by Design when they were actually open. Upon walking in you'll notice a large number of balloons, plush toys and other decorations and only a small area where there are actual pastries. Upon walking in the "By Design" in the name becomes clear. The emphasis here is on making cookies for particular events or making gift baskets that include cookies rather than a focus on cookies themselves. I was able to freely look around for a minute or two before someone came out from the back room to actually assist. I ordered a few different cookies, (just variations of chocolate chip) along with some dog biscuit cookies (which I might refer to as Scooby Snacks) for my friends canine and was soon on my way. My total was around 8.00 for three cookies and two dog biscuits. So, how were the cookies? Well they weren't bad, but for the price they weren't great either. I'd rate the taste of these cookies well below those of Mrs. Fields or Cookie Factory cookies commonly found in mall food courts. I'd even rate it below the "Gourmet" line of cookies sold in Jewel grocery store bakeries. The cost combined with the fact that the cookies were far from exceptional definitely left me disappointed. If it's any consolation my friends dog seemed to like the dog biscuits. Overall I wasn't too impressed with Cookies by Design. Their emphasis is clearly more on making aesthetically pleasing looking cookies than taste bud pleasing cookies. For a unique gift basket this might be a decent place to stop, but if you're looking for top tier bakery quality cookies look elsewhere. I give it two stars. read more

This is one of the BEST cookies I have ever had. I remember when I was younger I would stop in here with my friends before heading over to Ogden 6 and getting a single cookie. No, they are definitely not cheap and cost around $7-8 a cookie (which is a huge bummer). I have never ordered a bouquet from here, but have included plenty of single cookies in gifts! The other day I was going to the theater and dragged my friend here to try one of their decorated cookies. I haven't had one of Cookies By Design cookies in almost 7 years, and when I bit into it, it brought back fond and delicious memories. I wish I could give a lower rating. My step dad had a heart surgery and I wanted to cheer him up with his favorite treats in the world- cookies. I was happy to pay the expedited shipping fedex fee (rather than hand deliver), because I knew my parents would be touch and go with answering the door during this time. It was originally supposed to arrive on Tuesday- I received a call from Marlene stating that the cookies would not arrive until Wednesday due to the fact that we "ordered too late." (after the fact of the website telling us otherwise, and saying that "its a corporate website" so that the promised shipping doesn't "apply"...). All of this was ok, and I shrugged off her attitude at first because it just wasn't worth it. However, this is not even close to where the problems begin. I truly don't like to cause problems or rate anyone bad because I know people have bad days and it's not fair to rate a business based on one interaction. 5 interactions later and I'm ready to share my experience, so that no one has to deal with something like this again... I called back on Thursday asking them kindly if they could tell me the status of the order because my step dad had still not received the cookies. Once again she hung up after responding with a short sentence saying "she'd check on it". I get a call back and she states that the package DID arrive, when I had literally gotten a phone call back from my mother stating it had not minutes earlier. She then gets incredibly mean and says "WELL I CAN SEND YOU THE TRACKING INFO IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME". They thought my number was my step dad's phone number (the one that they KNEW just had heart surgery) and CBD was challenging/"double checking" that my parents did not get the cookies/seeing if we were lying to them. When CBD was told it was my number, they still asked for his number because they didn't believe us and thought it was a good idea to bother my recovering step father with this absolute nonsense. My fiance stated that he would not share my step dads number because he is in recovery. When I heard of this additional situation I became really sad and upset. I couldn't believe that they had gone to these lengths- even after they said it was all settled and done. I called CBD back and heard a voice on the line that I did not recognize- So I had honestly kindly asked for the manager- but the gal on the other end didnt even let me finish saying "manager" when she said "I AM THE OWNER OF THIS BUSINESS AND WE DO NOT CONDONE HARASSMENT OR SCREAMING AT OUR EMPLOYEES". I was in complete complete complete shock at how horribly mean she said this to me - without even verifying if it was me- and how she could escalate the situation to saying it was harassment on MY end? I told her I had no idea what she was talking about and the owner still stated that I had been "screaming" at her employee when I absolutely had not been. She was so mean and I just can't believe they treated me like this as a customer - continually interrupting me saying " SO ARE YOU GONNA LET ME TALK OR WHAT?" when I had not even had a chance to communicate anything authentic. They knew my step dads health situation and what we were going through and not only were they not at all sensitive to that, but they were just right out mean and disrespectful to their customer. I will NEVER order from this location again. I called corporate and the guy on the line was absolutely wonderful and sympathetic- hopefully they will gain some kindness from corporate.
