Amazing prices and food, but the sandwich buns were incredibly soggy. I would say eat it as soon as you get your meal.

I have driven through 3 times in the last 3 weeks, and some things were good while some things were not so good. Good things: price of food, service, hamburger, cheeseburger, french fries, diet coke. Not so good things: hush puppies, cole slaw, BBQ. I would have given four stars except for the BBQ, which was way-too-hot spicy and vinegary, with a weird cat food-like texture. I understand that Carolina-style BBQ differs from Memphis-style and Texas-style BBQ but this stuff was really bad, almost to the point of being totally inedible. read more

To be clear, Cook Out is still the best chain burger I've had, and folks who tout Five Guys and In-N-Out as better are simply wrong. On my visit last October, though, the burger seemed to have lost a little of that "cooked on the home grill" flavor that had me so enamored with Cook Out in the first place. One of my favorite fast food chains out-of-state has to be Cook Out. I was first introduced to this place after a night out while visiting my friend at Duke University. I had to come back with the beau when we drove up to DC. As fate would have it, we ended up at the same exact one. Apparently this is THE place to go to grab some grub before heading home after a night out of drinking. Why? It's cheap, greasy, and definitely hits the spot. My friend recommended getting a tray for $3.99. You choose your main entree and two sides. But wait, what? There's even more meat offered as sides? Yup. She recommended getting a burger with a side of nuggets and a corn dog. She did not steer me wrong! My only gripe is that if you want to make your burger healthier by adding veggies, some of them cost extra. Other than that, the food definitely hits the spot like nothing I've ever eaten before. You can't really say anything negative about Cook Out. They are always open super late to satisfy your late night cravings. You can mix together any flavor of milkshakes you want for the same cost as a single flavor. You get enough food for 2 people for roughly $5. I have never experienced a problem with this location. The food I order is always correct and served super hot. They are also one of the quicker service Cook Outs that I have experienced. The Cajun chicken sandwich is a must try along with their Cajun seasoned fries. We place large Cook Out milkshake orders with this location pretty frequently ( sometimes 75+ milkshakes) and the orders are almost always correct (they may have mixed up one or two flavors but it usually isn't a big deal). They are always ready for pick up at the time we requested. This is one of the best choices for fast food. read more

I've had a grand total of one negative experience where the server took about 15 minutes to have my food ready but generally, the food is served very quickly very efficiently and the people who work here are very friendly. "Oh. my. gosh. Oh my gosh!" Yeah, those were my exact words after my first bite of the Cook Out style burger. First, the main attraction -- the burger was a revelation -- I mean, I know the name of this place is "Cook Out," but who knew this box of a double-drive-thru could really nail the taste of a grilled to perfection burger? On top of that, the combo of chili and coleslaw? Brilliant. The sides -- my sister and I each got the Cook Out trays (which is a burger + 2 sides), so I got to try the hush puppies (not bad), fries (medium cut, not too greasy, good bite to them), corn dog, and onion rings (thick, crunchy batter, not too greasy either). Finally, last but not least -- the shake. I agree with the other reviewers, can't go wrong, and definitely would be worth it to come back just for the shakes (actually, after having my banana pudding shake (which had real banana bits and vanilla wafer bits in it), I was toying with the thought of stocking up on shakes and storing them in the freezer so I could enjoy them throughout the upcoming week). Service-wise, the staff was prompt and got our order right. The location itself isn't the best to hang around afterwards (so rush that piping hot burger home to enjoy it there), but it is across from a well-lit car dealer and I felt that it was reasonable to go here for drive-thru after dark. This seems to be the better cook-out of the three I've been to. I do love the one on Western Blvd in Raleigh--- but that's just because I went to NC State and there's manyyyy memories of late nights at cook-out. My friends even brought their cat to cook out one night after going to the bar. Ha ha ha. Anyway- cook out in Durham on Hillsborough Rd always gets my order right. Their grilled chicken sandwiches are juicy and never too dry or anything. Their cheese fries are OMG good. Their milkshakes are freaking delicious. I don't even like ice cream all that much.. but their chocolate malt and banana pudding one is incredible! For like $5 a tray.. you cannot beat that. No where can you get a meal around $5. Everyone talks about the trays, which are a great value- but if we're talking best tasting, then we must be talking huge burgers. The huge burger is a show stealer. I like mine with extra cheese, grilled onion and A1. If you haven't had one, you really don't know jack shit about Cookout. It tastes much different than all of their smaller offerings. Pair your huge with some cheese fries (I will usually add some Wickles pepper relish once I get home) round out the meal with an oreo cheesecake milkshake and you're in the money. read more

In terms of fast food this place is pretty close to awesome -- OK it is awesome. You cannot beat the variety on the menu here, the pricing, or the fact the place is open ridiculously late for NC. I always get the cookout tray -- bbq sandwich, fries and onion rings -- I think it's like $4.99. The footlong hotdog is also fabulous. Milkshakes here are consistently yummy - around Xmas they have a tasty eggnog milkshake which is wonderful! Stopped in half asleep from a roadtrip from Baltimore. i've never seen a "cook out" before and I was super annoyed that fast food was my only option at that hour. Their menu was extensive, so much so that I had the young lady working there pick for me. I naturally got a milk shake as well, their milk shake menu was unreal. When i first moved to Durham, the Cook Out was the first discovery I made that made me feel like Durham would be an ok place to live. I know the food is not "healthy" but it tastes so good and is so cheap that you should not pass it by. One of my favorite things are the sides in the trays. i usually get the bacon wrap, chicken wrap, corn dog, or fries. In my mind, a corn dog is not a side and i love getting one with a chicken sandwich. Oftentimes I'll eat the main dish for dinner and then take two wraps to work for lunch the next day. For those that are more health conscious, the grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes is a good choice (or at least not a bad choice). We've been going here about twice per month for about a year. We had an incident last night where we asked for one of our sandwiches to have no mayonnaise on it due to serious food allergy. I've been here twice my entire life. Both times I ordered nothing but hushpuppies. They were so dark they were nearly burnt. Do they ever change their oil? I threw up one time and the other time I didn't all-out vomit, but something hard and black worked its way up my throat. Was it a deep-fried BUG?!?! Cook Out is a double-sided drive thru. There are no seats, just a window for anyone to walk-up. You know you're somewhere stereotypically American when they discriminate against pedestrians in such an overt way. As a Californian, I must address the frequent comparisons to In-N-Out. The similarities are that they both have drive-thrus, both have "Out" in their name, and both are only available in certain regions of the country. That's where the comparisons end. In terms of burger quality, Cook Out is desperately sub-par. The beef is chewy and plasticy, and the ingredients are cheap. The bread is soft from having sat out for hours. The fries are WAY too over-salted; you have to rub the salt off each fry just to make it edible. The redeeming qualities of Cook Out are its range of milkshakes and its price level. There are dozens of milkshakes (36 to be precise), and the one I had was decent (you could tell it was made from an artificially-based mix instead of all-natural ice cream, but I'm a milkshake snob). The prices are great too - under $2 for a small burger, which I recommend getting a couple of so that you could try the different types of burger. So for a quick, cheap eat, Cook Out is where it's at. But frankly, it's not better than many of the national fast food chains. read more

having never made my own personal late-night journey to white castle a lá harold & kumar - i have adopted "cook out" as my favorite place to beg people to take me to at completely indecent hours of the night. unlike my fellow reviewer (below), i never went (or rather drove-through) cook out with the expectation that it would counter fast food master, in-n-out. instead, i went with an insane appetite and an open mind. and i was NOT disappointed. cook out is drive-through only. and this may be a good thing-- there are definitely some shady characters hanging out around the tiny cook out fortress. there are two ordering windows (aka two lanes) and that's about it as far as proper or improper décor goes. service is fast despite the appearance of long car lines and the staff have always been friendly and spot-on in terms of taking correct food orders. the milkshakes are ah-mazing. the 5-piece chicken nuggets are delicious and honestly, i love the random bbq sauce that comes with the meal. the cheeseburgers are on the smaller side but are pretty standard burger fare (no complaints here). so- as long as my boyfriend lives in durham, i will continue to count cook out as one of my late night eateries. read more

My counselor went here to pick up a huge order for camp, and I understand that it is a huge order and a lot of food, but the lack of respect that the cashier showed was very unnecessary. Not only did two milkshakes not come out, but when we went back to ask for it (with a receipt showing that we did pay for them), the cashier did not believe us. Ate here twice in two days as I was staying just up the street. Service could've been a bit quicker, but prices were great for the food you get. Milkshake flavors were fun. I had peach cobbler one day and peanut butter banana the next. There were lots of chunks of cobbler, and pieces of banana in the other. Their shakes are thick enough to eat with a spoon, but they do not have quite the milkfat creaminess of someplace like Culvers. Cook Out is definitely my fast food of choice and even though we live in Chapel Hill, the bf and I will make a trip out here every once in a while rather than hitting up any of the places by us. You may or may not get exactly what you ordered because their speakers are pretty crappy but everything's good so we're always happy. The shakes are absolutely phenomenal. They are almost too thick to suck through a straw and are loaded with whatever you order (order a cheesecake shake? there's a whole slice of cheesecake in there) plus there's a whole panel of the menu devoted to the shake options.
