When the first CAD finally came back, it looked nothing like what my fiancé had asked for. Instead of admitting the mistake, they insisted his notes were wrong and theirs were right. Then, when he asked them to fix it, they wanted even more money before creating another CAD. It only got worse from there. They had told him the ring would be ready in time for the week he planned to propose, but by then they hadn't even sent the corrected CAD. He was trying so hard to keep everything a surprise, but eventually he had to ask me to look at the designs to make sure he wasn't crazy. Turns out he was right the whole time. By that point, he'd also gone about three weeks without hearing anything from Mark, so he decided to cut his losses and ask my dad for the name of his family jeweler instead. Then came the part that really crossed the line. After deciding not to move forward, Mariloff wouldn't leave him alone. They repeatedly called and texted him, and after he blocked them, they actually started messaging him on LinkedIn. The cherry on top? At the time, the shop was located inside a large wholesale mall near downtown. I wanted to purchase a setting and have my stone mounted on it, which I did. After I chose the setting, they took both the stone and the setting to the back workshop. About twenty minutes later, they brought the finished ring out to me. That's when something felt off. Immediately, I noticed the stone looked different. The princess cut was no longer perfectly square, and it appeared taller in height. It had lost its familiar sparkle. The bright brilliance from the top was gone. I was confused, but at that moment it didn't fully register, so I left the store. I couldn't imagine that something like that could have happened. But over the next few hours, I couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't the same stone. I returned to the store and told them my concern. "No, it's a beautiful ring and stone," they said. "We had no problem mounting it." As I replayed the experience in my head, one detail stood out. During the mounting process, the jeweler in the back called over the front sales associate, the one who had helped me choose the setting. The two of them looked at something together and spoke quietly. Then the sales associate went to the front of the store to speak with an older man who seemed to be the owner. After a brief exchange, the associate returned to the workshop for another short conversation. The whole time, none of them made eye contact with me. Thinking back, I can't help but wonder. My daughter and I found ourselves at a business meeting at Marriott Hotel in downtown Dallas and she asked me to help her with fixing two of her bracelets. I took them from her, went to the front desk to grab an envelope to take them with me securely. The hotel front desk lady saw the bracelets and asked if I had a problem and recommended that I take them to the nearby Plaza Fine Jewelry store. Once at the store, I met the sweetest people you can find. They opened and worked at this store for over 40 years. The owner looked at the bracelets and in a matter of minutes fixed them. He refused payment for fixing one of them because it was just "not that big of a deal". While waiting, I was chatting with these folks, and they shared their life story, and I shared mine. It was a very nice, warm, and cordial experience. To kill some of the time I was asking questions about some of the pieces, and it turns out that a lot of them are handmade at the store and therefore unique. Then I moved to check the watches they sell and because I felt so good about my experience I went ahead and bought a Rolex for my wife. This is how business should be conducted. Because this team is proud of what they do, are very good, kind, unassuming, nice, and simple, something that was a quick bracelet repair translated in a sale of an expensive piece.
