Thrilla in Manilla
Natalie A.

A nice quiet tucked away brewery not far from Buford highway. Ordered the thrilla in Manila at 5:45pm on a Thursday while waiting for my husband to meet me for dinner. I was the only person in the brewery and got to enjoy a couple samples of their beers, chat with the bartender and listen to the good music (indie rock). They have a couple lagers, a DIPA and some spurs and seltzers (they call them sparkles) to choose from. There's some cool art murals to look at too. Worth a stop before or after Buford!

low key vibes with parking and an outdoor space! My husband and I went on a Monday night about an hour before close and noticed they had some corn hole stuff as well. We had their sour and an IPA and was pleasantly surprised, both were good! They also sell some merchandise, including disc golf gear which I thought was rly cool. Definitely would come back, support local!

I went to Contrast on Saturday, 5/27/23. It was a beautiful and sunny day and we sat outside. Plenty of outside seating, which is super cute with picnic tables and string lights in the trees. I got the Thrilla in Manila Sour and it was AMAZING. Probably the best sour I've ever had. 100% recommend!

I've been meaning to check out the closest brewery to me sooner, but it wasn't until Coffeeman Cold Brew had a pop up at Contrast that I finally made an effort to stop by. And god knows why I waited so long, because the beers are super unique, and honestly hard to find outside of the brewery. During COVID, they were serving beers in ugly plastic SOLO cups, which was understandable, but forgive me for the ugly photos... my friend ended up buying a glass JUST so we could take some better pics (he bought a glass and a beer in a plastic SOLO cup, which he poured into the glass himself...). The things foodies do for good food pics... I'm not a sour beer drinker but really enjoyed the Paradise Melange V3. The DDH Fresh Eyes IPA was also a pretty easy drinking and juicy IPA to sip on while people watching. Can't wait to stop back in to try some more complex and exclusive beers... and hopefully in their gorgeous glassware next time and inside... hidden from the scorching heat of the sun!

Great brewery in downtown Chamblee. There aren't many breweries in this area but this one has it all. Great selection of beers, foodtrucks and good music. Its a real good spot to sit and vibe with friends. At first glance, there doesn't appear to be a lot of parking but there are plenty of parking spaces in neighboring businesses and they aren't strict about parking. I highly recommend, even if you aren't a big beer drinker.

Bourbon barrel aged biggie stout - 2 thumbs up

On top of being a food lover, I've began to appreciate beer after our trip to Munich and Prague. Welp, just my luck. Added a new item to my gluttony. Contrast Artisan is small brewery but with bold flavors of beer to satisfy all of your cravings. My goto beer is a dark beer and I must say, the Bourbon barrel aged biggie stout is a doozie. It has rich bourbon flavor and just enough sweetness! Means a lot, coming from someone that doesn't even like bourbon. Today I was craving something light and I was in paradise with Paradise melange sour. Despite its name, not much of sourness, which i liked. Overall, it was refreshing, light, and felt tropical as if I was drinking mango juice that I think I unconsciously head tilted all the way back to get to the last drop. Point is, Contrast brewery has an option for you to satisfy your mood of beer. I've recently started my visit here, but I do see that they change out their beer options time to time. Contrast is a quaint brewery(maybe fit around 30 inside and out) that has friendly staff, simple choice of options(not much of food menu but liking the simplicity), and is dog friendly(extra kudos for this). Oh and they let you try a sample, so you can check out the good before actually ordering a drink. Very chill place to come and enjoy a nice wine glass of beer and a great add to Chamblee!

So that's the cool little spot. You have some indoor and a lot of outdoor area to sitting. They have a little park bench area, kind of on a hill so you may want to be careful. And it's in the middle of a forest but the point is there is room. They got a couple games there like cornhole but most importantly they have beer. They make their own, they brew in the back, they only have a certain amount but what they have is pretty decent. It's real low key and it's around the corner so if you don't know you're going, You would definitely not even notice it's there. They have a sign that says brewery pointing to the back of the building so that's the only indicator lol. If you go in there though, the people there will talk to you and give you the ups and downs of each type of beer they have, whatever they have on tap, and they're super informative. I've been a few times and I haven't been disappointed.

But nothing at all other than the beer list makes it feel 'brewery', it's very much an upscale interior, fanstic layout of sushi bar, regular bar, open air dining and outdoor patio. The food - wow. very unique flavor profiles, hearty, lots of great options between samplers, sushi, and main courses. Pro Tip - if you feel overwhelemed about the menu, most of the staff that i meet here know it very well and have worked here for a very long time, so feel free to ask, we were suprised by such a good selection of options by our bartender.

I was able to get a table right away. It was well lighted and there was some soft background music, plus TVs over the bar showing sports. I ordered a beer and the Katsu Curry. The beer was very good, a nice fizzy crisp beer. The curry was a large bowl with rice and shredded cabbage at the bottom and some curried vegetables alongside the panko crusted chicken breast sliced beautifully on top. Everything tasted great. On a slightly warmer day it would be lovely to sit outside on the patio.

When we received our food, we nearly gasped at the size of the cornbread because we weren't fully expecting a generous amount. The cornbread was perfectly cooked and was so delicious. We didn't taste any honey though (it tasted like salted butter), which was a shame since we love honey butter, but it still paired well with the cornbread. The gnocchi was insanely good! The gnocchi was cooked well, the rabbit was super tender and seasoned well, and I was surprised by how well the aged balsamic pulled the dish together. I highly recommend this dish. I saw other dishes that were served to other tables that had me salivating too, so I can't wait to go back and try more dishes. We sat at the bar to eat, and the bartenders were all super sweet and funny. This is a must-try spot!

The next time in 2024 when I was in the area, they were closed for a remodel. Today was the day. The beer selection was fantastic and so was the food. I got the pork sandwich with greens on top. It was delicious, but it could've not had juices leaking so much? Maybe cheese below and above the meat to try to keep some of the juices off the bun or maybe more bun toasting? The fries were amazing and I should've gotten the aolie initially, but didn't get it until I saw another table with an order. It was delicious. The service was very good. The server had good knowledge of the beers, food, and was friendly. This is one of the best beer bars in the US. Firstly, the service was great. The host and our server did nothing wrong. My husband had a couple of beers and thought they were great as well. That's why I'm giving 3 stars. They saved it from giving them 1. Phew. Now, with that being said, I write this review a whole day later because I cannot NOT write about our disappointment with the food itself. We ordered mozzarella wedges and fried pickles as appetizers. The fried pickles were fine, but we all took turns laughing and showing off how hollow each one of our mozzarella wedges was. It was all puff and no cheese. That was the start. Then we got our entrées. We ordered wings, a pepperoni flatbread, Cajun pasta, a chicken club sandwich, and fish and chips. My daughter liked the wings, but everything else was not good. I'm trying really hard not to use the word "terrible." My daughter described her pepperoni flatbread as, "I guess it's OK. It tastes like Chinese buffet pizza." My husband, who tries never to complain about food, said his chicken club tasted extremely burnt. I tried it and spit it out because it was so bitter. The pasta was just so very sad, and the garlic toast that came with it was even sadder. My fish and chips were not great either. No one liked the cold fries. We almost finished everything because it was late, we were starving, we're not necessarily picky, and the portions were extremely small. Again, my daughter liked her wings, so there's that. I don't enjoy writing bad reviews, but I also don't like paying a decent amount for bad food in this economy. I didn't want to complain to management because we weren't there to get anything comped, and I could already tell there was nothing I could suggest that would fix how bad our food was. I just could not, in good conscience, fail to warn the next customer about what to expect from the food
