My friends and I spent two frigid nights In Contento Inn. The heater did not function the first night and there were no blankets provided Turns out they hadn't lit the pilot for the heater. They said this would be taken care of, but strangely enough when we set the thermostat to 68 for the night it stopped working again, leaving us with another cold sleepless night. Upon departing, we spoke to the manager, who was sweet but unhelpful. Needless to stay we were not "Content" and will never be return to or recommend this motel. Dead bugs around the windowsill abd no bath mat did not help make our stay pleasant. read more

Worst place I have ever spent time at. Should have known when we drove up to it. I don't mind funky, but this looked straight out of a horror movie. We froze the first night, only to find out the pilot light hadn't been turned on for the heater. And there were no extra blankets to be found. We were given a tiny space heater the next morning and two blankets, and a promise to get the pilot light working. Same problem that night. I'm now sick and can only assume it started with freezing through both nights. Plus there were dead bugs on the window sill letting us know how often the room gets a thorough cleaning. Ok. Real deal, no bull here. My family stayed here for a week and didn't want to leave, Ben ( the awesome innkeeper and his dog Trooper) were awesome and that's it. The Inn was seventies retro, and most important we were treated like family. Ben was very attentive, the place was spotless, and very quiet. We really did feel like we were at home and will be back again and again. The location is perfect for access to all local shops, and the views are breathtaking. We were in Carmel Valley for a wedding and had 4 rooms for family to stay at this little gem at the edge of town. The Innkeeper, Ben, was exceptional!! Super friendly and had great suggestions on local restaurants and wineries. Coffee and fresh pastries are proved in the common room every morning. The extra bonus was Ben's helper, Trooper. If all dogs had this pups demeanor, I'd have 20 dogs! Being dog people, we all enjoyed having Trooper around. The outside common area is amazing! We had a great time gathering to hang out during down time including using the jacuzzi and pool. Beautiful flowers and blooming citrus trees create a calming environment. Lots of seating with umbrellas and even I fire pit for evening chats. The rooms are no frills but very nice. The style is retro mid century modern with fun cat artwork on the wall. The bed was very comfortable which was wonderful after our busy days. Each room has its one outside patio entering onto the common area. Super convenient to visit with everyone. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, in fact we extended for an additional day. We will definitely book at Contenta next time we are in Carmel Valley. read more

An honest assessment of this quaint inn. First, the price for this spot was EXCELLENT, especially since we were right in the heart of Carmel Valley. But, the rooms were lacking a bit: burnt out lights, rooms with non-working heaters (18), no comforter on the bed (just a blanket wrapped in between two sheets, and not enough hot water for a bath (or a shower the next morning, and the hot tub was BROKEN! If all of that doesn't deter you, then let me get to the good. Each room has a patio that gives private entry way into the pool area. The rooms were large and clean. The mattresses were especially cozy. The decor was retro and cute. Overall, I was happy to stay in this cute little Inn just walking distance from coffee shops (visit the Wild Goose Bakery & Coffee Shop---pina colada jam!), shopping, and scratch kitchen restaurants. I traveled here to spend some time at Refuge, so this was a mellow location to stay in anticipation of the trip to a spa. And the surfounding landscape is just incredible. The truth is, I'd book this place, again, without reservation. It's in my price range and right up my ally! Don't sleep on this quaint accomodation when venturing out to Carmel. read more

We booked several rooms for a wedding, we all had a very lovely stay at The Contenta Inn. The rooms were very clean and quiet. The Innkeeper Ben treated us like family, the location near the Catholic Church was the best for walkability to shops and restaurants. It was the best in the area. We brought food back and ate in the dining area with our loved ones who needed a quiet space. Something for everyone! We will return. Thanks to Ben and Trooper, the best dog ever! read more

I couldn't be happier with our 2 night stay here. I believe they have done an incredible amount of work on the whole property since the bad reviews. The Ac worked great, the room was impeccably clean, nice and large comfortable bed. I cannot stress enough how spacious our room was! It was huge! With its own little patio going out to a pool/ hot tub! A side room with extra sink, fridge and table. My favorite thing was how cute the place was decorated! Unlike a lot of remodeled vintage hotels they kept with a cute mid century style. Very tasteful and unique styling. Huge props to whoever made the design choices here, thank you for respecting the integrity and era of the buildings. No gray vinyl flooring and cheugy home goods art to be seen. Very clean room with a back sliding door out to the pool and jacuzzi(water temp could have been hotter). Big clean bathroom with views of the foothills. The temperature in the room was fine. What an absolute hidden gem! The rooms are very clean, extremely large, and the furnishings are eclectic and on point for the style of the motel. Our king bed was very comfortable and the bedding was soft and dreamy. Towels were fluffy and clean. The outdoor shared space is fantastic. It's very well kept. We were in the area to play golf. We had intended to stay here but probably head into Monterey and Carmel for dinner. We never left. We walked to meals and to the local stores. For a weekend, this and the blue sky lodge were the only accommodations in my price range in Carmel Valley. I didn't like how the blue sky lodge rooms were so dark inside so I went with contenta. YOU should go with contenta! Same owners, I believe, but different experiences. These rooms have higher ceilings and you have a bedroom and bathroom window you can open, along with front door and sliding door you can open to let the air flow in. I stayed in room 17 and it did not have a ceiling fan, just an electric desk fan in the closet. I have a family member who stayed in room 16, which is attached to 17. There were two other buildings where I'm guessing there are only 2 rooms attached to one another. My room didn't have a cool lounge area in the pool courtyard, which was a downside... but I also dislike having immediate neighbors on either side of me so room 17 was fine. My room had a weird secret door that led to a Jack and Jill "kitchen" that could possibly be shared with room 16. I went into my family members room to try to open the door to the "kitchen" but it wouldn't budge open... so perhaps, the kitchen is solely used by room 17 only? There was no microwave, just an old stove, sink and small table with two chairs in there... and a window! I have family who stayed at blue sky and they did not like it. As another yelper posted- my fam said it had bates motel vibes. I had no problems with my shower drain not draining, the water pressure was fine and the water got hot quick! The downsides: the lightbulbs in the room are extremely dim at night, there is a space under the door where bugs could potentially come in, there was no porch or front door light, the tv is kinda small and there is no AC- this would prob suck if you stayed here during summer. The grassy courtyard area had the pool, a ping pong table, grill, lounge chairs, picnic table and I believe there was an ice machine outside of my room but I didn't check to see if actual ice was inside. For check in, I showed up at 330 on the dot and no one was there. Call the number on the door and let them know you're there... I did that and someone showed up within 5 min. Do not just sit there and wait for someone to show up. read more

My daughter and I stayed here on June 20 & 21st for my great grandson's 16th birthday; his mother and him live in the Village. This is one of best places we've ever stayed at. The rooms are amazingly clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated. The courtyard, pools, hot tub was perfect, with ping pong table, corn hole games, picnic tables, etc. manager Miriam and John who manages front desk, were extremely welcoming, helping and so kind. I had an event at Bernardus Winery. I live in Monterey, so I didn't want to drive back after the event or depend on an Uber ride. I found this hotel that is walking distance to not only Bernardus Winery, but lots of the wineries and resteraunts. Also, it is pet friendly so I was able to bring my dog. I had a nice, quiet and peaceful stay there. It was a very much needed get away. read more

BLOOD ON OUR SHEETS!!!!! My wife and came to Carmel for a wedding. We stayed at the contenta room 4 in front of the pool, that was nice. The issue I have is, that the sheets they provided for us to sleep in. They were covered with blood, we didnt notice the night before, because we came back late and tired. But in the morning when we got up, on my wife side of the bed, that side of the bed sheets were covered with dried up blood from god knows who, or what disease the previous person or people staying here before us had. I was pissed and livid. I went to the front dest and spoke to the lady that had checked us in the day before, i told her what i had found, she came in to our room and her response was "YES THIS IS OLD DRIED BLOOD". The common sense thing to do is to move us from that room, we don't know what else could've been in there. But she said " I can offer you a coupon of some sort and change that one sheet for you". Booked this place for a wedding since everything near by was completely booked out. Place: The place is super dated. In order to enter the room, they assign you a room key and its not even a key card. Once you check in, they'll cut a piece of paper approx 4 x 4 with description of the wifi... never seen this before but it was pretty funny. The room was extremely dated itself and very dirty. I had a two bed queen and their were stains on each bed. Some oil, food stains, and I even found a few pieces of woman hair underneath the pillow. Since it was for one night only I dealt with it. My partner didnt even feel comfortable taking a shower, so she didnt shower at all. For some reasoning, they have a opened window that isnt covered in their restroom, so it makes privacy in the restroom nonexistent. Customer service: We were greeted by Tony. He was def the not most pleasant to deal with. Customer service was sub par. They do not have an attendant after 9 P.M. When we arrived, we were the only guests staying at this place. Their were no cars in the lots or whatsoever, nor did we see any one staying their. The next morning, we were running a bit behind. I had requested for a possible late check out at 12 noon, so I called Tony to see if that was possible assuming that it wouldn't be an issue since we were the only guests their! But of course, Tony said NO! He had the audacity to tell me that someone was checking in to my room already... So Tony, out of 20 rooms their, conveniently where no one was even staying their at the time, you had just decided that our room was the one to be booked. Okay... I believe you. Just stay away from this place and their sister INNs as well. If you dont mind driving a bit further, I would def stay away from this place. I paid about 300 for a one nights stay. read more

Stay sober and drive into Monterey or Carmel to stay or pay $100.00 for an Uber. We stayed in room #14 and the heater was Ridiculous! It would click for about a minute while it was heating up and them POP! It was cold the night we stayed and this cycle repeated itself almost every hour as the room would heat up, the heater would shut off and cool off, then start up again when the thermostat turned on. Tom Bodet would be disappointed (look it up if you don't get the reference). Just not nice. Outside is clearly where they spent their money. It wasn't on the rooms. Honestly, we were so happy with our stay. Lucky for us, there were very few guests so there was never any noise. We got to enjoy the hot tub multiple times during our two day stay, as well as the morning sun in our patio. Very spacious room, comfy bed, newly renovated property so furniture, walls and rug looked fresh and not worn in. Extra portable heater which we used to heat up the bathroom. Lots of towels. Meyer lemon trees all over property for us to enjoy. Clear communication by desk person. Easy check in and check out. The winter room rate was far more reasonable than staying in Carmel or Monterey. We have paid twice as much for a bad motel room in Monterey. We walked to everything, coffee, breakfast, dinner, groceries, book store. Contenta is now on my favorite list and we will be back. Although it was for only two days, we felt like we relaxed for a week. So peaceful. Mountains are beautiful. Air is fresh. Night sky opened up to star gazing. read more

This place isn't for sissies. The environment is harsh and with out a/c during even the most brutal of heat waves. The tub fills with or without the stopper in, so it's better to use the stopper and have the water that pools up be your own instead of pipe water floating things. The room is very spacious with luxurious vaulted ceilings, you'll feel like a royal when you look up. The pool and outdoor area are ok... it would be cool to have a working hot tub though. Anyways, if you're not up to some roughing it, you won't like it here as much as I did. read more

Stayed for three night over the Fourth of July weekend. Our party included a second couple who only stayed two nights. Craig the manager was helpful in arranging our reservations. Although an older motel, the rooms were clean and comfortable. The beds were excellent. I am not a fan of pillow top mattresses. These were firms without sags or dents. Our room included a private courtyard. One oddity was the fixtures seemed to operate backwards; the fan slid down to speed up, the shower and sink water handles twisted counter clockwise. The grounds were nice and the pool looked clean and inviting. Noise traveled across the center courtyard and we were disturbed by other guests' midnight romp which is why we thought we gave it 4 starts. read more

I used to live in Carmel Valley and am very familiar with all the local hotels and resorts. The Contenta Inn is a rare low priced hotel relative to the Carmel Valley market and area in general. You can spend $600 more a night and have valet service and additional amenities and luxuries if that is what you seek. For what it is - I really liked the Contenta. I liked the mid-century furniture and the gardens around the pool were beautiful. The plants that they use in the garden attract birds and bees and it gives off a pleasant vibe. If you want someone to rush out to your car and valet it for you - go to Bernardus. But I prefer this dialed down chic style of hotel and I hope the owners market it for what it is and business booms and it can become a staple in the Village. read more

We loved our homey stay in Carmel valley at Contenta inn!! The room was vary spacious and clean. Great spot to spend the night if your on a long drive. Just a few minor complaints, however I'm not a hotel snob and I really enjoyed my stay. There were ants in the bathroom and if you lose the room key it is a $50 charge; which is absurd. The coffee machine decided to work at 3am & the AC wasn't working. It's a little outdated but it's kind of like shabby-chic. The room was really cute and comfy, the bathroom was really big, the room had its own cute patio that led directly to the hot tub and pool with a nice little lawn to lounge on. The hot tub is super nice. It's a minute walk to down town, which was awesome so we could go drink and walk back to the room. We will definitely return when we come back to the valley! read more

I was in the area for a wedding. The event ended around 10pm and we returned to the hotel. Apparently another party who was not part of our group decided it was a party night and occupied the hot tub until 3am making noise and keeping half the hotel up. We asked the group if they wouldn't mind being more quiet which they responded by being confrontational and to "call the police". We decided to speak with the hotel night management. After we told them what the problem was we started to hang up the phone, the night manager mistakenly thought we had hung up and we overheard him say "you should call 911 c**t!" This is unacceptable behaviour from a hotel that is in the guest service industry. Avoid this hotel. Rates are overpriced for the aging hotel rooms, with no A/c. The staff was the final kicker why no one should visit this location. There was a free continental breakfast which was pretty comprehensive. So there is that. Update: 4 months later and no one from my party has been contacted about this incident to date. The owners obviously don't care. For a business​ that's in customer service they sure are happy to just take your money and run. read more

It has retro 60's decor. The room is clean. However the TV turns on but there is no access to any channels. The room phone doesn't work. I had to call the cops at 3:30 am because of all the two adults screaming and swearing at the top of their lungs. Both doors slamming. And the crying children. This is not an experience I would want to repeat. read more

This property is a good candidate for Hotel Impossible! Luckily, we only stayed one night. Our room had a very unique stink to it, but being that we got in about 930pm and our kids were exhausted, we decided to tough it out. Daylight revealed the fact that the grounds are in serious need of TLC. From the weathered, rotted fences to rust on fixtures and metal railings everywhere. The hot tub looked scary to say the least. Our bedroom sliding door was jammed, so we couldn't get much needed fresh air. We only had a small desk fan that did nothing to cool the room, NO AC. Breakfast was decent, all the basics. All of this for the low price of $200 on bookings.com, I have no idea how a place like this gets to charge so much. I hope they put some money into making this place a little more inviting, it's a great location. read more

I tried to reserve and the very nice man who worked there said they were wide open.. then the manager said they were booked... really the employee told me they were short staffed and it was up to the manager if she wanted to unblock the room. Mind you I'm local and it was for my parents for several nights. So to the owners of Contenta Inn: your manager just cost you a 3 nights stay and you lost all future business from a local to Los Laureless Lodge. read more

There was no heat on a night where it was 43 degrees. And when the repairman was trying to "fix" the heater he pulled down his mask (in a small enclosed room that my girlfriend and I were sitting it with him). They tried to give us an old space heater but there were also no blankets on the bed. I mean zero. I've never seen that in my life. And it turns out they had some kind of construction project and the gas had been turned off to the entire bank of rooms. So this was not a surprise issue. Someone in charge (probably the owner) knew about it but figured they could just slide it by the guests since most hotels were booked for the weekend in the area. I felt for the manager because she genuinely seemed to be scrambling. In the end, we had just driven 3 hours for a much needed escape from lockdown only to get back into the car and drive 3 hours back home. I guess if you're rich stay at a $600 a night place nearby, if not just stay home. read more

Nice view of the mountains. Only negative, the people next door were very loud and kept us up until very late. Thin walls. Breakfast was simple, but plenty to start the day. We would stay here again. We stayed the night of Sept. 24. At about 1:30 am a group of drunks took over the central pool area, eventually it grew to a total of about 15 to 20 party animals. It seemed most were not hotel guests but were just walking in from street, there is nothing to keep non-guests out. Loud, vulgar language, facilities used as a public toilet, snooping around guest's cars, slamming the gates as they came and went. The worst part was there was no response/help from the hotel management. There was no on- site staff. The room phone did not work so I called the after hours hotel phone number using my son's cell phone. I was told that a manager was on the way over so I asked that the manager come to our room once they arrived. No one ever arrived and the drinking and partying went on. At about 3:30am I called 911. The sheriff's department deputies were great. I met them at the parking lot entrance and they explained that with no contact with or authorization from hotel management they were limited in what they could do but they would definitely make their presence known. By 4:15 all was quiet. I later learned that another guest had been sexually harassed by the manager when she had called the hotel after hours number! In the morning, still very upset, I confronted the day manager, Craig, and to his credit, he was very understanding, and apologetic. He made me feel that he definitely regretted the incidents and promised to immediately contact the owners and make them aware of what happened. I requested that an owner contact me, but after a week I have not heard anything, so I guess the owners are too busy or unconcerned/not interested to respond. I'm sure this was not a usual event, but with a couple of bars a short walk round the corner, easy access from the street, no manager, and an unsecured and unmonitored property, this motel certainly has the potential to be a great place for a BYOB all niter. However, for our family of four it was a horrible, sleepless night. read more
